Engaged! {a surprise proposal} | Lake Oconee wedding and engagement photographers

We {love} love. We {love} surprises.

And, you can probably conclude from those two statements, that we were thrilled to be a part of this session!!

The scene was set…lakeside at the stunning Ritz Carlton in Lake Oconee, Georgia, complete with a beautiful sunny day, champagne, roses {white–her favorite!} and an adorable picnic basket…

{which just happened to hold one of the most gorgeous engagement rings we’ve ever seen}!

Our groom-to-be {along with the staff at the Ritz Carlton} had been planning and prepping for weeks!

Everything was perfect and the bride-to-be was clueless!

After some sneaky collaborating we were all set to capture this uber-sweet moment!! I {Jessica} played the part of an innocent bystander just sitting at a park bench nearby reading a book {camera locked and loaded}

Shauna and Kris were brave enough to venture out into the water in a paddleboat

{seriously, we’d do anything for the perfect shot!}

The image below was taken while I {Jessica} was crouched behind a fence near the dock,

I just had to get a glimpse of these two paddling around! Awesome!

The rest is history….she {obviously} said YES!!!!

After the {big} moment, we were able to come out of our hiding spots and get a few portraits of the newly engaged lovebirds…

How sweet is this?? A bible with their {new} names! Love!

Thanks to these guys for letting us be a part of such a special day for them! We are pumped to hear all about the wedding plans!!

Out of the Office March 10-17th

{two}chics photography is now out of the office and headed to Jamaica to photograph the wedding of this adorable and super-fun couple!! We will return to the office on Sunday, March 17th and all emails and voicemails will be responded to then.

To say we’re excited is the biggest understatement! We have literally had our bags packed, for, well, I don’t want to say because it’s kind of embarassing!

Until then, we’re on island time!!!

The History of the Engagement Ring {77 Diamonds}

Many brides and grooms-to-be know how and where to buy an engagement ring, but not many people know the history behind them!

We decided to ask the pros and partnered up with 77 Diamonds to give us the history of the engagement ring and they are kindly guest blogging for us today!

Ah, the illustrious engagement ring. Although it is really just a piece of jewelry, this much-coveted symbol of love can make or break a relationship and bring people to tears. And, in today’s society, an engagement almost always comes with a ring. So where is this tradition founded? The history of the engagement ring is a tale as equally intriguing and unconventional as the modern rings that are currently being given to brides.

The engagement ring was first seen in Ancient Egypt as the circle was a symbol of a never-ending cycle and the space in it as a gateway. During the Roman era, betrothal rings were given as tokens of engagement. The Western world, however, did not formally embrace this practice until the 13th century. Engagement rings given by Roman men included a small, carved key, which is believed to protect and cherish the husband’s heart.

The Ancient Greeks placed the engagement ring on the fourth finger on the left hand because they believed this finger held a vein leading to the heart. To Romans, engagement rings were meant to be a sign of ownership, not love. Thus, a husband claimed his wife like property. A second ring was added, creating the marital wedding set, in Rome during the second century B.C.E.; one of gold that was donned by the wife in public and one made of iron that she wore while doing house work.

Although the engagement ring has a long history, it isn’t until 1477 when the Archduke Maximilian of Austria bestowed Mary of Burgundy with a diamond ring to symbolize their betrothal. As a result, members of the higher caste and those with money began to give diamond rings to their beloved as a sign of engagement. After the discovery of diamonds in Africa in 1870, the use of diamonds in wedding rings increased, and those who typically couldn’t afford diamonds were now able to be a part of this rich tradition. Still, diamond engagement rings were considered a high society custom and convention reserved for the nobility and aristocracy. Therefore, simple, plain bands were used as engagement rings. It wasn’t until around the 1930′s that engagement rings with diamonds, like those sold by 77 Diamonds, and other sparkling embellishments were used within the U.S.

During the 20th century, the average Western groom who could afford it would secretly select and purchase an engagement ring which he would use to surprise his future bride when he proposed. Although most contemporary couples shop for rings together, this ritual is still practiced. In addition, some chic women are even proposing to their men with diamond engagement rings. New engagement ring trends also include the use of diverse gemstones and metals, rings adorned with huge, gorgeous rocks, or vintage-inspired rings, antiques, or family heirlooms.
