Review:
Don’t Go Back To Sleep is the latest release from singer-songwriter Chris Ayer. Ayer was a winner in the folk category in the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest , and with this album, continues to show what a force he is becoming in the folk-rock scene.

This album has an interesting mix of acoustic pop songs in he vein of John Mayer or Jason Mraz. I find Ayer’s treatment of the off-tempo numbers, like “Long Gone”, “In The Silence”, “The Revealin”, and “Say What You Mean”, to really demonstrate his skills as a true triple-threat; singer, song-writer, guitar-player.

Ayer’s music may too easily be compared to his contemporaries. He combines a contemporary sense of song structure with a more traditional feel. He has a feel and style for his music that seems deeply rooted in early folk-rock. At many points on this album one can hear echos of greats like James Taylor.

Chris Ayer’s Don’t Go Back To Sleep is a solid and thoroughly enjoyable album. He hit the nail on the head and we’re only just starting to catch a glimpse of what Ayer is going to create for many years to come.

Review:

With a name like Nihilitia, one might think the band may not give a shit enough about their own existence to put out any decent music. Instead, with Nihilist Militia, we are presented with a sludge rock creation, reminiscent of the Melvins, that pushes boundaries and pushes buttons.

Sara Hussain plays some of the more viscouus bass lines I’ve heard in a while. That, and her intense vocals make her a powerful front to this band. Chris Thomas’ guitar work is rooted in heavy sludge rock but he often goes outside the box into a psychedelic or trippy feel. The song “Fortnight” even borders on prog rock, while parts of “Lebanese Butcher” remind me of Radiohead. The band’s sound in rounded off by Brad Sheppard’s solid chops on drums.

Being a sludge-rock influenced band, Nihilitia pays less attention to the technical aspects of their music and more to the raw emotional of the ordeal. Precision does not alway equate to good. Overall this album rocks out, but with only seven tracks, your appetite may not be entirely satisfied. Luckily this is the type of album that warrants repeated play, so crank it up.

Review:

Seventh Void is the brain child of Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly ( Type O Negative, Danzig).  With their debut album, Heaven Is Gone, they have proven that they can create something unique and powerful that holds it’s own against other projects they’ve worked on.

The production of this album is fairly solid, however the mix seems a little flat in some spots.  The sound could definitely be more rich.  This is easily remedied by cranking up the volume.  This album was made to be played loud.

Kenny Hickey has a unique voice that helps carry the music along with his raucous guitar-work.  He proves himself to be a more-than-capable vocalist with great range.  His vocals really help set Seventh Void apart from other bands in the genre.

Heaven Is Gone exhibits all the best traits of doom metal.  Slow, heavy, dirty and loud.  It would be impossible to deny hearing the influence Type O Negative or Danzig in their music, and there’s also a bit of Alice In Chains thrown in too.  From start to finish, this album never relents.  It grabs you and throttles you throughout ten tracks of kick-ass metal.

Review:

Luke Winslow-King has put together masterful creations that mix blues, folk and jazz. His website describes Old/New Baby as 15 original songs that marry traditional New Orleans music with contemporary song writing. This simple statement almost seems inadequate to fully describe what Winslow-King has created, but one might be hard pressed to come up with something better.

The lyrics are where Winslow-King really puts a modern twist on music that is soundly grounded in traditional music. Lines like “tired as a bad pimp’s bitch” are seamlessly stiched into the music, never used to overtly shock ad awe, but to subversively keep listeners on their toes.

Overall, Luke Winslow-King’s Old/New Baby demonstrates his understading that even traditional music is living thing, not to be constrained by time or rules. A reflection of the modern era, not of days past.
