Terrestrial Design presents the Biome™ typeface family, designed by Carl Crossgrove. Biome can be described as a retro-futuristic, soft superelliptical display sans-serif design in seven weights, with corresponding oblique italics. A biome is a natural ecosystem defined largely by dominant vegetation and climate types. Biome won a Certificate of Typographic Excellence in the Type Directors Club 2009 type design competition under its previous, working name of Nebulon. Biome is the distillation of figure-ground explorations and an interplay between the organic and the futuristic. Raleway by Matt McInerney is an elegant sans-serif typeface, designed in a single thin weight. It is a display face that features both old style and lining numerals, standard and discretionary ligatures, a pretty complete set of diacritics, as well as a stylistic alternate inspired by more geometric sans-serif typefaces than it’s neo-grotesque inspired default character set. David Brier for DBD International has created this beautiful packaging for the Botanical Bakery. Creating the lips out of a leaf was the perfect match, since the lips, like lipstick, can change with each flavor as the lips announce the flavors to the customer. Otari is vibrant and contemporary, but serious and built to last. Its character shines in display type, but doesn’t interfere at text sizes. Otari aims to capture the essence of Wellington, New Zealand in a single typeface. The contrast of a colorful art scene and the conservative colonial British aesthetic, which is still evident in the capital city, laid the groundwork for this design.

Jim Sutherland, from Hat-trick Design, has designed a set of typographic playing cards. It was a personal project with the basic guidelines being: design a full set of playing cards (52 + jokers and a cover) using no repeated typefaces and no alteration of typefaces – which, in his words, “made it hard but very rewarding. It was like solving 54 micro design problems.”All 54 cards fit conveniently on a B1 sheet of paper, therefore making it ideal for printing a poster (shown above – top). My friend Ibraheem Youssef has created this beautiful Quentin Tarantino Graphic movie poster series. “Prociono” (pro-tsee-O-no) is an Esperanto word meaning either the star Procyon or the animal species known as the raccoon. It is a roman with blackletter elements. The font was created by Barry Schwartz, and you can download it for free here.

The movie title stills collection is a great site created by Christian Annyas. This site features typography from the opening credits of movies plus the ending. There are many movies available, with some great opening titles.
