wine pouring by Nelson Family Vineyards, and music by Don Haupt. The art will be on display throughout the month of July.

When Susan and her family settled in Ukiah, she began taking art classes at Mendocino College. She was ready to fulfill the creative dream she had as a child of wanting to be an artist. She found that she enjoyed the challenge of capturing the likeness of a subject in watercolor. When she started exploring ceramics with teacher Mac Magruder, making masks out of clay seemed like an obvious direction. Susan is showing masks from her own collection and from private collections of her work. Her drawing and paintings will also be shown in the gallery.

Denise has been a resident of Mendocino County for twelve years, but began her study of baskets when she lived in Sonoma County. She studied pine needle basketry with Native American artist Lucy Parker, daughter of Julia Parker, both well known Pomo basket makers who live near Yosemite. She enjoys any basketry that uses the coiled method, and likes experimenting with varied materials such as tules, wild iris leaves, redwood bark, and any other natural material that she can gather. She will be showing a collection of fifteen baskets. Denise hand dyes some of her materials, and also embellishes the baskets with feathers and beads.

Hanna Vogel, a ceramic artist, will be a guest artist featured inside the gallery.

At the Annex of Art Center Ukiah, Nelson Family Vineyards will be pouring wine and sharing one of their featured performers, Don Haupt, from their first ever Blues Festival, Reds, Whites, and The Blues on July 4th. He is an incredible performer and not to be missed. Music from 5:30 – 8:30; donations appreciated.

For over 50 years, the Nelson Family has been farming vineyards in
there fertile valley hidden in the Hopland Hills. The old tractor once
used to till the rugged soil, now stands as a symbol of there passion
for sustainable farming and belief that great wine is born in the
vineyards. The once working sheep ranch and orchard operation of 1952,
has contributed in creating the unique biodiversity that exists in the Nelson Family Vineyards today.

Keeping strictly to the tradition of the self accompanied blues-singer, Don Haupt
packs the sound and energy of a full band into a one man show. Whooping
vocals and a hefty hand on the guitar playing backed by a right foot
not just tapping but stomping the stage so hard it is felt through the
floor clear into the back row. The songs are old standards from the 20s
and 30s, dusted off and polished clean again. Songs like Son House’s
“Preachin Blues” and Robert Johnson’s “Traveling Riverside Blues” are
performed with conviction enough to turn any venue into old-time swamps
of Louisiana juke joint.

I have been a quilt artist for ten years. My one quilting class was with Natasha Kempers-Kullen at Asilomar in 1999. Otherwise, I am self-taught. I had an art minor at UC Berkeley, and have taken numerous painting and drawing classes at the local community college. I have a MA and two teaching credentials in the field of Special Education- I have spent the last 35 years employed by the Mendocino County Office of Education as an Orientation and Mobility Instructor for the Blind.

My quilts have been shown regularly since 2000, and awarded ribbons periodically, at many quilt shows across the US, including the AQS shows in Paducah and Nashville, the Tactile Architecture, Husqvarna and IQA shows in Houston, IQA in Chicago, PIQF, Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival, World Quilt and Textile, the PA National Quilt Extravaganza and Visions in San Diego. I have been a finalist three times in the MAQS “New Quilts from an Old Favorite” contest, and won a third place in their “bears paw” contest.

My own quilts, together with those made by members of my guild, have been juried five years in a row into the “Ultimate Guild Challenge” sponsored by AQS at the Nashville show, winning 2nd place, 1st place, and best of show (two times). Many of my pieces have been accepted into major gallery shows across the country, and have also been published in major quilting magazines in the US and abroad.

Two of my quilts (and me too!) have been featured in documentary films. One was done by PBS in Redding CA in 2004 (“Escape from Skagway”). The other (“An Unexpected Manifestation of Menopause/Laura Takes a Leap”) was filmed by a private videographer and included in “Until the violence Stops” which aired on Lifetime TV in addition to being shown in theaters around the country in conjunction with the annual performances of Eve Ensler’s “Vagina Monologues”

I have been lecturing and teaching landscape collage classes for quilting stores, quilt guilds and private groups in northern California and Washington for the past eight years.

I live in Ukiah and have three grown children. Besides quilting, my hobbies include mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, organic gardening and writing. I am the author of a book (a memoir on my experiences working with blind children and their families), which was published in 2007 by Medusa’s Muse Publishing Company.

See Laura and her quilts at the Corner Gallery reception on First Friday in March — March 6 from 5 to 8 pm.

Due to the success of First Fridays, the galleries will be continuing the event all year, and this Friday, February 6, is the second Art Walk for the new year. We hope you will take advantage of these monthly opportunities to come to the galleries and businesses that are open from 5 to 8 on the first Friday of the month, meet your friends, enjoy food and music, taste wine poured by Barra of Mendocino, and see and perhaps take home some beautiful pieces of art.

Holly Cratty is showing six recent works. These abstracted acrylic landscapes and seascapes are minimalist, however they seek to capture something of the beauty, awe, and joy inherent in the inner and outer experience of being present in nature. These works focus on the use of color to convey the natural elements, atmospheric light, and space. Holly's work is represented by galleries in California, Oregon and Florida.

John Richards moved to the Ukiah area around 1972, working as a cabinetmaker, and loves to experiment by combining his woodworking and machine shop skills in intricate ways. He creates handmade pens and boxes, made from exotic woods from around the world, and local wood primarily from burls — black walnut, oak, redwood, maple, and buckeye. He inlays abalone, elk and deer antlers, and ebony and ivory from recycled piano keys in his pens. Last fall we wrote a profile on John and his work.

Lory Lance began designing jewelry over thirty-five years ago when she traveled among the nomadic tribes of East Africa. The imaginative and ingenious ornamentation each tribe created with materials from the barren lands they inhabited profoundly affected her. Lory creates wearable art that reflects that ethnic genius and is suitable for western tastes.

Bob Pappas is showing works in glass, and Mark Scheffer will be displaying his photographs.

For information on the many adult and children's art classes offered at the ACU Annex next door, please contact the gallery at 707-462-1170. The gallery is at 201 S. State Street.

Originally hailing from New York and New Jersey, Elliot Little has lived in Mendocino County for 35 years. His photography is a celebration of the beauty around us. The main focus of his current display is the intimate splendor of our local autumn, which can be compared in beauty to the fall New England colors. His words of advice for young photographers is: “Enjoy it. I remember going out in my rainsuit to see wildflowers coming out, lying on my stomach, breathing with the wind, and trying to get a shot.” He started photographing landscapes rather than close ups of flowers because he wanted to see where the flower grew.

Rose Peterson Myers enjoys many different art forms, and is showing several different media this month. New bright and bold florals in traditional watercolor on paper are presented along with baskets, decorative art pieces, and a wine barrel head painted in acrylic of a summer vineyard landscape to celebrate our fall grape harvest. To complete the show, she is offering a preview of several jewelry pieces, more of which will be offered during the holiday boutique in December.

Carol Heady has been drawing for over 40 years, developing her own recognizable style. She and her husband take trips into the wilderness with pack mules, and from these trips she gets the inspiration for her art works. She has won hundred’s of awards in competition art shows, and has illustrated books and western catalogs. Her colorful pen and ink drawings, colored with photographic ink, have a new look.

Date and time: Friday, November 7, 5 to 8 pm
Where: Corner Gallery, Art Center Ukiah, 201 S State Street, Ukiah
Musicians: The Broadcasters
Winery: Eaglepoint Ranch Winery
Wine and refreshments will be served.
