Volkswagen says it’s 1947, when Dutch VW importer Ben Pon first sketched the design. You could argue it was 1949, when CEO Heinz Nordhoff approved production. Or you could say today is day because the Bus as we know and love it — split windshield, rounded front bumper that hugged the body, woefully underpowered engine — was produced from March 8, 1950 until 1967.

I'm really digging the new History Channel show American Pickers. While they haven't (yet; unless I missed it) drawn attention to it, there is a vintage VW Bus truck in some of the scenes back at the Antique Archeology headquarters. On the site for the business, I found this killer shot of the truck. There is also a thread on The Samba talking about it... sweet ride and a fun show. 

I hope the show is a success and that they have enough recorded for the rest of the season.... I imagine at some point the family members at home watching Gramps sell an old sign for $50 that they flip for $3k will go after them; ironically with an antique pitchfork. I'd choose a different getaway vehicle than the VW if I were those guys, for sure!
