Saw these pics, via @LDN on twitter and immediately wanted to do a post. i am pretty sure that most people have at some stage, likely when a kid, have played with or just watched bubbles. using washing up liquid instead of that special stuff they sell. i've always been amazed by those folks on saturday night tv shows who can do all kinds of mad stuff with bubbles.
so, off i went and searched 'bubbles' in iTunes but nothing hit the spot. then i started going through my 'electronic' genre in iTunes and this came on.
i can easily think of bubbles when listening to this and vice-versa.
enough words can't really be spoken about this man, Arthur Russell. i highly recommend that you go to pitchfork for this 2004 review. the first two paragraphs are especially good.
"There was the world of Indian master-musician Ali Akbar Khan, in which Arthur used his cello to trance-inducing effect. There was the world where his cello shadowed the beat-poet Allen Ginsburg at readings...then there was the world of disco music, where one night in 1977, a DJ saved his life."

what can i say about kick-starting the 'under the influence with...'series off again with greymatter, whom i have had the delight of making the virtual acquaintance of via twitter. he is one of the original basement soul and unique uncut heads. if you don't know them check it here. top people involved in this scene with quality sounds always around. i first came across the basement soul comp, sounds from the floor, while living in the States where this sound was few and far between so needless to say it stuck with me and, in all sincerity, to have one of these guys talking to us about their musical influences is special.
along with all this he is a member of the illustrious mr.bongo soundsystem and as a producer has collaborated with Heidi Vogel and
Lyric L amongst others. Numerous releases in the pipeline for 2009 on
labels including Tru Thoughts, Wolf Music, NY Soul, KAT and Unique
Uncut.
As a DJ he has played alongside the likes of Gilles Peterson, Orbital, Domu, Rainer Truby, Benji B, Seiji, Tetine, Prince Fatty, The Nextmen, Seu Jorge, Howie B, 4Hero, Koop, Fingathing, Mark de Clive Lowe, and many more.

What can I say? Choice music from a man of taste so check out his musical influences along with one of his mixes and see where it has sprung from with his own style and take on all that has preceded him. An honor to say to least.

Angela Bofil - People Make The World Go Round
This record has everything - beats, vocal hooks, bassline. Sounds like
a dance record but was actually written in the 70's. Had to edit it,
those beats were crying out for it. First heard it at Basement Soul in
Brighton when Amar Patel dropped it, big moment.
Tweet - Oops (Oh My) / Call Me
Insanely twisted beats and hooks from Timbaland who is one of my
favourite 'big' producers, next level rhythms. Both leave you
wondering where the hell the noises came from. Tweet just slides so
well on the tracks, perfect combination.
Pepe Braddock - Deep Burnt
Beautiful record that changed my perception of house music when I heard
it when I was in my late teens. This introduced me to deeper house
and also to the master that is Pepe Braddock, who I have always rated
as one of the most talented producers on earth.

Sonics, soul and production on a whole new level. First time I heard this at Plastic People I nearly cried, pretty hard not to.

My love for broken came from this record. Killer from start to finish,
drum programming is unbelievable, soaring deep vocal and the switch up
half way through is one of the heaviest in any dance record.
Wu Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck
36 Chambers changed everything for me when I heard it and it remains
one of the few albums I know almost all the words too. Protect Ya Neck
is a strange record in many ways, in Bobito's words... "a record with 9
verses and no chorus"... seems impossible. Utterly raw with so much
energy. Seen this record completely wreck rooms before and justifiably
so.

heading to cheebah in limerick on saturday for the 'credit crunch (on expenses) tour with adam whitaker (unusual&electric), paul tarpey and 'special mystery guest'. i've been following and supporting adam since i first posted about unusual & electric back in 2007. since then we've known each other virtually and pretty frequently i get packages in the mail with mix cds, new eps, calenders, postcards, etc. (as adam is also a designer). a true gent: passionate about his music yet equally passionate about living.
this will be the first time i get to meet him and to njoy seeing him playing not one, but two sets.
also looking forward to meeting the cheebah crew and to be at the club which is meant to be such great fun.
gonna b a good one.
sunday is back to ukiyo for two events.
first is a tasting session, and book reading from the "Evolution of the Ciaran Crawford Action Figure Doll" by Dylan Stott and Ciaran Crawford. Ciaran, the chef, masterminds the various recipies, and Dylan provides the stories.

This was sent to me by a friend via email. When I read it I realized that maybe I had forgotten some of how powerful music is. In the never ending quest for great music perhaps I had forgotten, on occasion, to really listen and be moved and to place certain music into a certain moment. Some of the 'moment's below belong to me also, most not, but I think we can all read this remember...
I forget the power music has…
A song can come on and something in you makes your body move, makes you happy and want to sing loudly without any care of who can hear. Music can relax you when stress is out of control. Music can wake you up, fill you with energy when you need to get up and get going. Music can make you sad.
Music can make memories flood back. Make memories overwhelm you. Music can take you back years to a place, a period of your life, an age. It can bring the memory of a person you might not have thought about in years to life.
Maybe you are a young preteen in the back of the car on a dreaded family road trip listening to the same song over and over on your walkman singing at the top of your lungs to the annoyance of your family…

Maybe it going to shows around Austin with your friend who writes for The Chronicle...he always knows the next big thing or the show you shouldn’t miss. I went along for the ride and the often came away with a new band to add to my itunes.
Maybe it was meeting a “famous” local musician and going out with him a few times before he told you he was married…fucker. Good music though.
Maybe it was a trip to Paris that reminded you about the jazz ladies you loved, the amazing Charlie Parker and how music used to be so pure and created for nothing other then the sake of music…
Maybe it was hearing Tom Yorke’s voice 15 years after the first time you heard Creep and his voice still having that orgasmic effect on you.
Maybe it is the newest Bob Dylan and hearing the age in his voice, reminding you of your own mortality.
Maybe it is Johhny Cash years later and wanting the kind of love he and June had.
Maybe it was LCD Soundsystem while you were rolling.
Maybe it was NWA blaring at the stoner’s house on a Sunday afternoon when you were heartbroken and trying to drink away your sorrow.
Maybe it the Violent Femmes in the car with a 14 year old…you both singing along on the way to paint…
We all have music we put on over and over.
We all have music we know will remind us of a time, a place, a person.
Happy music, Sad Music, Party Music, Get work done music, Music to make art to, Music to make love to…

bumped into laurent fintoni on twitter a while back and a delight to follow with all kinds of good stuff coming from him. one of the main things he's been planning and just launched today is original cultures which runs in balogna today through saturday. its a fascinating project and one that i hope to see being brought to dublin at some point soon enough. there is scope and need for something like this here. lets see what happens with this cultural exchange through the medium of modern performing arts in new and unique ways.
"There is an amazing wealth of talent, cultural diversity and traditions in modern performing arts in both Japan and Europe. However, for years language, distance and communication have made it difficult for artists in Europe and Japan to collaborate and for the intricacy and richness of the cultures to be properly exposed to the public outside of the respective countries. While the internet has helped to reduce the issue of distance, as well as language and communication to a lesser extent, there still lacks a real program of cultural exchange between Japan and European countries at the level of modern performing arts.
Original Cultures aims to create such a program through the development and implementation of activities
that form the basis of a regular Cultural Exchange Program (CEP) between the countries. All Original Cultures CEP activities will be documented and archived on the internet in multimedia formats to create an interactive and unique record of the ongoing cultural exchange."
