here in Austin. This upcoming Tuesday (19th) we won't be doing the
Roots-Fi show. But..... I will be playing there, starting at 9pm.
Basically
I will be playing my beats and musical treats for the night. Some of
the tunes will have been posted here before and some definitely in the
future. I will also post a mix of my playlist here on Wednesday so keep
an eye out for that.
If you are in Austin, or know anyone here, please let them know that this is on.
Great tunes and some drinks-sounds like a top night to me.

Cheers,
Cubik

This tune is one of my favourite dancehall tunes that I have come across.
I prefer dancehall out of all the 'versions' of reggae because it is very much beat driven with the rolling riddims, its definitely rougher (for the most part) but is also very sexy music. Yes, some of the lyrics would make 50-Cent et al blush and are not politically correct. I don't condone the opinions in the music all the time. Don't forget, Johnny Cash once sang "I shot a man in Reno......just to watch him die." I don't believe Johnny Cash did this but he sure did tell an interesting story.

Anyway-I never rant about music so this is my first (I think) and last time.

Enjoy.

Artist: Tanya Stephens
Tune: Yuh Nuh Ready Fi Dis Yet
You just can't help but to bop your head and sway your body to this one.
Download 02_yuh_nuh_ready_fi_dis_yet.mp3

But that track was responding to Derrick Morgan's "Tougher Than Tough" and both musicians went and back and forth for a while, establishing the genre as a Jamaican tradition:

Download tougher_than_tough.mp3

DJ Spooky reminded me of these trial songs with his inclusion of the odd, and slightly morally dubious track, "The Trial of Pama Dice," by Lloyd, Dice, & His Mum:

Download 115_the_trial_of_pama_dice.mp3

With "Stupid Marriage," The Specials did their own version of a "trial song," though they added a bit more melody than the toasted versions by Buster and others:

Download 11_stupid_marriage_1.mp3

This weekend I bought the recently released "DJ Spooky Presents: In Fine Style," dubbed "50,000 Volts of Trojan Records." Despite trying to ween myself from the compilation form in my music purchases, in favor of the original albums, I was not dissappointed with the two disc set. Who better than a DJ, who probably spends as much time sifting through bins at used record stores than he does on a stage, to comb the the archives of one of the most important labels in Jamaican music. I only had a few of these tracks in my collection and was pleased with Spooky's solid and eclectic selections. The two tracks I share with you below should sound familiar to fans of Jay-Z and The Beatles, even if their collections of reggae and dub are not as extensive as Spooky's:

Artist: Cocoa Tea, Home T & Shabba Ranks
Tune: Who She Love

Both Cocoa Tea and Home T are in love with this women and they can't figure out who she loves. To add to the mix Shabba Ranks provides some additional commentary to the saga, with a beautifully melodic tune laid over a rolling dancehall bassline.
Download 119_who_she_love.mp3
