Charlotte tragically lost her life in March 2007 at the age of only 14.

<place w:st="on"></place><city w:st="on"></city>

Charlotte is missed in so many ways. She exemplified Edgehill’s approach to life, with her great desire to participate and her infectious, supportive enthusiasm. A bright and intelligent girl, Charlotte contributed widely both in school and beyond, captaining her school netball and gymnastics teams and representing local clubs for netball, gymnastics and trampolining.

<city w:st="on"></city><place w:st="on"></place>

Charlotte was certainly one of Edgehill’s shining lights. She was extremely caring and wanted to help everyone, no matter their age. Her passion was gymnastics: she lived and breathed it as much as she could. Many school sessions following competitions are used to ‘play’ and just relax, yet you could guarantee there was something Charlotte was determined to achieve. She would work constantly throughout these sessions, with that inner drive and motivation only a few are blessed with at such a young age.

On Friday (2nd March) when local primary schools visited the College Charlotte demonstrated her floor routine and helped to coach, however in every minute when she was not needed she was up on the beam practising a cartwheel. A move which many hate – she actually achieved it, FINALLY! She stayed on the beam on many occasions which was great for the rest of the group to see and something that will certainly be remembered! She also achieved her long term goals – giants on the bars and round off flics on the floor.

<city w:st="on"></city>

Charlotte coached gymnastics to many youngsters in North Devon enthusing them to enjoy the sport she loved so much. She was due to take her exam shortly having been too young to sit it last term with her friends.

Charlotte took the British Gymnastics Judging Exam last year and although she was the youngest candidate she was not fazed by the tasks she was set. She was N. Devon’s only candidate at that sitting to score a Distinction (90%) and she would often sit with her teacher and coach Katrina Venner to analyse others’ routines to ensure she was still up to scratch with her judging. She is known on the gymnastics scene for her judging and was always given great feedback following competitions.

<city w:st="on"></city><place w:st="on"></place>

Charlotte was also a keen trampolinist and netballer. In the most recent regional trampolining competition Charlotte won the gold medal for her age group. Charlotte played in the North Devon Junior and Senior Netball Leagues and was a member of the Under 16 North Devon team. She was also a member of the school team who won the right to represent the region at the national finals next weekend. Her talents were endless!

Charlotte did everything with a smile. Nothing was ever too much trouble. We all need to remember this and the way in which she conducted her life. She lived life to the full, making the most of the many opportunities presented to her.

In the close Edgehill community of pupils, staff and parents, we are all deeply saddened by our own sense of loss, and we know that all who knew Charlotte share those feelings, but we feel even more keenly for Charlotte’s family who grieve the loss of a delightful daughter, granddaughter and friend.

The juniors competed on Saturday and performed very well with the Under 7 Boys teams taking the title. The Under 7 Girls and the Under 11 Boys won the silver medals and the Under 11 Girls took the bronze. Katie Michael scored the highest floor score to win silver in the Under 11 Girls. Brooke Timmins also won silver in the Under 7 Girls and Ben Griffin and Lucas Wilson took individual bronze medals in the Under 7 and Under 11 Boys events.

They were outstanding: stretched throughout, they won the Girls Team Titles in every age group and the Under 13 Boys title. Sophie Percival excelled on both pieces in the Under 19 Girls event scoring 9.3 on the floor and a perfect 10 on the vault. The judges could not vault her handspring which soared through the air. Stephanie Green lead the Under 15 field winning yet another gold. In the Under 13 Girls Grace Woolway was just pushed to Silver individually with Millie Taylor-Richards taking the Bronze. Bronze medals were also won by Mark Mwuangulu and Harrison Weller in the Under 15 and Under 13 boys events respectively. Grace Woolway and Ste[hanie Green wan the award given in memory of Charlotte, for poise, grace and elegance. The senior teams were also awarded the Laycock trophy for Endeavour which was a fitting way to complete the competition.

The Under 14s took third place after finishing second in their group to make it to the semi-finals where they went down 6-8 to the eventual winners Park (from the Midlands).

With Charlotte's spirit with them throughout the teams worked tirelessly. The Under 14s faced Highclare in the first match and centre Brisa Sanders-Hill was outstanding leading them to a 7-4 victory. Ibstock Place were their next opponent. This was harder initially, however Lizzy and Jess shot well to secure an 8-4 win. In the match against Bedstone the team were dominant with Sian Griffin and Steph Green linking well in centre court winning 9-5. Next was Claire’s Court. This match was not played in the spirit you would expect which was disappointing, so much so the coach, Miss Venner, was ready to forfeit the match because the Edgehill players were subjected to verbal back-chat. The Edgehill team rose above it to keep the game close, but they unfortunately went down 2-3. Stafford were their opponents for their last group match. They had to win this to make the semis. They played hard but could not seem to get in front despite great play from Jo and Nicky Grant. However in the final moments inspirational defending from Charlotte Kennedy gave them the confidence needed and they pulled off an 8-6 win. The semi-final place was guaranteed now and the team relaxed. They kept with Park for most of the game but were physically and emotionally exhausted and just could not find that little extra tot ake them into the final. Third place at the National Finals – well done!!

The team – 3rd place at the National ISA Finals – Lizzy Hanner, Jess Berry, Charlotte Kennedy, Steph Green, Brisa Sanders-Hill, Jo Grant, Nicky Grant, Rebecca Straker, Sian Griffin.

The Under 16s have qualified twice previously and finished as runners-up on both occasions so this time they were determined it would be third time lucky and every player was there to honour Char's memory. She had been a member of the team when they won the regional finals to qualify for the Nationals and would have been a key member of the squad. Their determination was very noticeable in the first group match against Princethorpe, a team who have made the semis in the last few years. Edgehill went out hard but controlled and gave a convincing performance to win 15-2. The opposition’s coach was extremely complimentary about the team’s performance. Against Stafford Edgehill were leading 7-2, but took their foot of the gas scaring the many supporters on the sideline. They did win but only by a narrow margin 9-8. The final group match was against Claire’s Court, the team who had beaten them in the final for the last team years. It was a lovely game and great defending by Sarah Edwards ensured an 8-4 victory. Edgehill faced Our Lady’s Convent in the semi-finals. This was quite a rough game with Chantal Moore and Zoe Whiteley taking most of the hits. They dealt with it and played their own game to win 7-3. A place in the final against Hull Collegiate was secured. This game was played as if it was a league match. The team were so calm and controlled throughout it was a joy to watch. The attack Chantal Moore, Antonia Pirrie, Roseanne Bromell and Steph Brown were superb and fluent and took an 11-3 lead into half-time. The second half was relaxing and safe to ensure they secured the victory. Yasmin Moore overcame an injury to participate in the final which was won by Edgehill 16-9. Miranda Gent the team’s goal keeper was there with her crutches following a knee injury last week to ensure to keep the team on their toes! Steph May and Charlotte Staddon two players who have been league teammates of Charlotte Shaw’s for years came to support and be part of the event in her memory. The umpires described the team as very polite, disciplined and a pleasure to umpire and that they fully deserved the victory.

Having placed second for the past two years the teams were focused and determined to bring home the winners trophies. <place w:st="on">
South Wales
</place> are included in our region for this event at it was St. Michael’s School from there which provided Edgehill with the hardest opposition. The Under 16s had won all of their matches convincingly until meeting them. The nerves got to both teams and the shooting stats and accuracy of passing declined making it more entertaining to watch. Roseanne Bromell netted an important goal 1 minute before time to take the lead and St. Michaels could not break down Edgehill’s attack in the last minute so the whistle went with Edgehill 7-6 up and with the ball hoping to score the 8th. Sarah Edwards upset the opposition’s attack on many occasions and Chantal Moore was the ‘play-maker’ throughout the tournament. The shooters Roseanne and Steph Brown were fantastic remaining disciplined to keep the scoring level high.

The Under 14s did not face quite such tough opposition. They only let in 6 goals during the day thanks to fantastic work by Charly Kennedy and 5 of those were to the Welsh whom they beat 12-5. Jess <state w:st="on"><place w:st="on">
Berry
</place></state>, Lizzy Hanner and Steph Green were superb in attack working the ball well and scoring huge numbers of goals against all opposition.
