When I first cleaning some ovens I often notice that the customer has lined either the grill pan or the bottom of the oven with aluminium foil. Often this is coated in grease and smells revolting!

People thing that this is a good way to stop the spills, well it may do but it also can cause damage to the enamel of the grill pan and more seriously the bottom of the oven. The reason for this is that the foil reflects the heat back onto the base of the oven and the heat intensifies and gets to a really high temperature and hence causes the damage.

I would recommend an oven liner which is a purpose designed and made from PTFE with a teflon coating from a kitchen supply company such as lakeland. This will help protect the bottom of the oven from drips and help you to keep the oven clean.

The problem has been setting the clock after switching the oven back on after switching it off. As the bulb had broken off in the main oven for safety's sake I switched the oven off. When I have switched back on I have been faced with just the flashing numbers usually, on most ovens, to reset it's been a case of just pressing the hand button. However in this case I tried every configuration of button pressing I could think of and still the main oven didn't switch on. Somehow yesterday I managed to get the oven to switch on, I must have stumbled on the solution. Today I phoned my wife in the office and she searched on the internet and found out how to do it.

So if you are having the same problem here is the solution. The timer knobs will have this configuration: an alarm button then two arrows, and a hand (manual) button, and then a knob to turn. Press both of the arrow buttons at the same time and then turn the knob to set the time, the oven will now operate. That's it nice and straight forward when you know how!
<fieldset class="zemanta-related"><legend class="zemanta-related-title">Related articles by Zemanta</legend>

Replacing mouse button on an EeePC (tablix.org)

We have been using a new kind of mat for our front door at home and it's called a 'Turtle Mat'. Before we got it I always had a problem getting my shoes dry and nearly always left a trail of footprints into our hall and really it was frustrating especially when our cleaner had just cleaned everything so it was perfect. Wiping my feet on our old carpet didn't seem to be 100% and there was always some residue left on my shoe which naturally made wet footprint marks across our limestone entrance floor. Recently at a
business conference for my other business I have, the home cleaning company, there was someone there called Simon Moore who told us about the history of the Turtle Mat and why he bought the company. He also did a demonstration and afterwards we managed to get one of the doormats at a discount. Anyway since we have had it in the house there's been an amazing difference, it really is a washable doormat that works! No wet footprints across our hall and no spoiling of the lovely clean floors, especially after they have been cleaned. Really I think that it just fantastic and we are going to get one for my back door, we haven't got one there at all and it's a real pain when coming back in from the garden especially when it has been raining, one for our office back door, the guys bring in dirt into the office and our office carpet really does need cleaning, and one for our home bathroom as we think it will stop us getting the bathroom wet. So what else can I say, if you really want to keep your house clean your really need to think about getting a doormat that works, one that really gets your shoes completely dry and that mat is a Turtle Mat.
<fieldset class="zemanta-related"><legend class="zemanta-related-title">Related articles by Zemanta</legend>

Washing and Cleaning Your (Non-Designer) Sneakers (shoeblog.com)

So on Saturday I removed the tank, fitted a new element and then put it all back together in the pouring rain. It was a bit tricky in parts as I had to get the tank completely out of the van to get leverage on the element to remove it. To do this I had to unbolt the fixing bolts, get the tank out ,then put the new element in and then bolt the tank back into the van. To do this bit needed a bit of effort but I got it all sorted out in the end. So at the end I was soaked through to the skin but it had to be done.

Today we have put the same van into the garage get a wheel bearing fixed. Now the van is fixed and I will use it tomorrow for a full day's work.
<fieldset class="zemanta-related"><legend class="zemanta-related-title">Related articles by Zemanta</legend>

More Energy in Batteries (technologyreview.com)

I think I mentioned in my previous blog that it was very dirty. Well as I have been aching for four days now I think I need to add that it was very very dirty and the effort to remove all the burnt on carbon was immense. It was one of the hardest AGA cookers I have had to clean. I think adding the cleaning of the service accommodation on the same day , I cleaned four single ovens, didn't actually help but when you need to get something cleaned in a set time period and you really have to go for it to get it cleaned then it becomes very hard work.

On the AGA the inside of the doors were black, the underside of the simmering lid was black and the "tunnels" just inside the ovens was black too. As all these services were aluminium then there are only a limited number of ways to clean them; all involving lots of elbow grease.

Apparently it was cheaper as there was a problem with the towel rail on the front. It took me about 3 hours to clean it; this is longer than usual as it was very dirty. In fact the owner told me that it hadn't been cleaned since new. The inside of the doors and the simmering top plate lid were particularly thick in carbonised grease.

For the dirty ones it just means a lot more effort is required in getting off the grease and burnt on carbon. I managed to get it all off and it looked very shiny and sparkling when I had finished.

I've been to Oxfordshire today to clean a 4 oven AGA cooker;
so it was a bit of a drive (an hour and a half) to get there. I listened to a
couple of business business seminars tapes by Chris Cardell whilst driving there and as
the lady of the house wasn’t there when I got there, she thought the 11.30
appointment was at 13.30, I had another 45 minutes further listening and van
cleaning until she turned up to let me in. So in the end I was Chris Cardelled
out!

It then took me three hours to clean the AGA. It was a
reconditioned one so even though it was one of the original ‘standard’ models
it had good enamel. So the final result was a sparkling clean AGA that looked
like new.

It's quite a way to
go to clean just one AGA but we fitted it in so that I could clean it and then carry
out some work in the office when I got back. I did the same yesterday when I
drove to Sherbourne to clean a 4 oven there again an hour and half each way of
Chris Cardell. For me cleaning AGAs is very satisfying so I don’t mind at all. So two AGA cookers left set ready, and looking fabulous, for Christmas.

Overall our oven cleaning business is doing well and we have
been very busy and at the moment we are booking in new appointments ten days in
advance, which is good for us. This is great news and is the start of our run
up to Christmas when we get very busy. Really it is going to fly by. Christmas
is a busy time for us as we get a rush where people want their ovens, ranges
and AGA cookers and of course their hobs and extractors shiny and fresh for
both visitors and the family. No one wants their mother-in-law, future
in-laws, family and friends to see their ovens or cookers in a filthy
state. They want them looking lovely. It really gives a good impression if they look great.
