A focused consumer and avid collector, Timothy Buckwalter uses his vast knowledge of American culture and music as starting points for his work. Images from magazines and cartoons and lines from contemporary songs and novels are blended together to form Buckwalter's work, creating objects that explore the enormous expanses and intimate crevices of male identity.

Recently, Buckwalter has used drawing as a way to appreciate the collision of language and ideas in protest signs, passive aggressive missives and ransom notes, creating contemporary tales of anxiety, desire, idiocy, anger, joy and fear.

Writing in the San Francisco Chronicle, critic Kenneth Baker explained "Buckwalter delights in ripping away whatever curtain of integrity or tact is supposed to separate the fictional space of cartoons from the idealized space of abstract painting.

Both, he suggests, paper over a deeper emptiness that might be existential or merely cultural. As postmodern Americans, we are ill-equipped to tell the difference."
