<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>In the back-and-forth between Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Mitt Romney's Miami-Dade co-chair, Stanley Tate, over an Israel speech, we haven't heard from one person who was deeply affected: Lauren Trushin, the 16-year-old girl who was confirmed Friday night and was looking forward to having the congresswoman speak.</p>
<p>But Wasserman Schultz was uninvited after, according to a close reading of Lauren's speech, Tate made a fuss -- not the congresswoman. Tate's allies say the congresswoman was the fit-pitcher.</p>
<p>"What I learned from the member who made the threats is that... people who engage in bullying get their way when people don’t stand up to them," Lauren said in her speech.</p>
<p>"I have learned some hard lessons recently, and I can’t help but be disappointed that I was not able to hear Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz speak tonight. I find it upsetting that anyone would take a stand against a prominent Jewish politician making a speech about the State of Israel, and make threats and misstatements."</p>
<p>The incident underscores the strong emotions in the fight for the Jewish vote -- even at liberal-leaning synagogues like Temple Israel. President Obama's campaign, incidentally, is advertising on a Temple Israel's <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/22849700" target="_self">UStream channel that features, among other things, a recording of the Shabbat service in question.</a></p>
<p>

Lauren's family had approved of Wasserman Schultz speaking at the Shabbat service, in part because the Broward Congresswoman is a hero of Lauren's. She wrote a 7th grade book report about the Democrat and her mother went to the University of Florida with Wasserman Schultz.</p>
<p>Here's Lauren's take, in her own words in the part of her speech about how Jews should stick together:</p>
<p><em>"These bouts of resentment within Judaism have even occurred within Temple Israel recently. Debbie Wasserman-Shultz who is a Jewish U.S Congresswoman, was invited to speak here tonight about Israel. </em><br /><br /><em>"What could be a more relevant topic for a speech at Temple Israel? Congresswomen Wasserman-Shultz not only serves as a proud Jewish political force in the world, but also as a personal inspiration to me, as she proves that being a Jewish woman doesn’t hinder one’s ability to become an important political figure, something that I hope to possibly achieve someday. I was so excited to have the honor of sharing the bema with the congresswoman on the night of my confirmation. </em><br /><br /><em>"But Debbie Wasserman-Shultz is not here tonight to speak about Israel, and I was told it was for security reasons. But the truth is she was un-invited by Temple Israel yesterday, simply because of the fact that a few members of Temple Israel don’t agree with her personal politics. One of these members even threatened to get up and speak on the bema without having been invited, in order to give an opposing viewpoint. I do not understand how a member of this temple could be so disrespectful to the Rabbi, to the other members of this temple, and to a U.S. congresswoman who has been invited to speak to us. As Jews, don’t we all agree that it is very important to maintain a strong U.S.-Israeli relationship, no matter what our personal political beliefs are? What I learned from the member who made the threats is that some people consider personal political beliefs about how this country is run to be more important than the State of Israel, and that people who engage in bullying get their way when people don’t stand up to them. </em><br /><em> "When I first heard about the opposition from certain temple members and specifically the threat to storm the bema, one of the first things I thought about, and something I believe we should all consider tonight, is the fourth commandment, which states “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” Today is the Sabbath, the day of rest, which God tells us to respect and keep holy. In the midst of the fierce arguments and disagreements that have taken place recently over who speaks and what they speak about, not only have relationships been hurt and people left appalled by the behavior of others, but we have also forgotten where we are and what this event is about……</em><br /><br /><em>"I have learned some hard lessons recently, and I can’t help but be disappointed that I was not able to hear Congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz speak tonight. I find it upsetting that anyone would take a stand against a prominent Jewish politician making a speech about the State of Israel, and make threats and misstatements. In the Ten Commandments, God tells us “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” I interpret this to mean that you shouldn’t fight against those on your side, whether it is by giving false testimony against them, or by denouncing them because of their beliefs concerning issues not having to do with Judaism."</em></p>

State Rep. Rachel Burgin officially announced today that she will run for state Senate District 24 against former Senate President Tom Lee.

It'll be quite a race for Tampa Bay. As noted yesterday, when incumbent Sen. Ronda Storms announced her resignation, Burgin has an edge in that she's an incumbent and moneyman Sam Rashid, who fashions himself as a kingmaker, might favor her more. Lee, whom the lobby corps dislikes for forcing lobbyist reforms, still has access to heavy-hitter fundraisers and knows the game better than the others.

Storms decision ultimately affects the insider Republican battle between St. Petersburg's Jack Latvala and St. Augustine's John Thrasher to be Senate President in two years. Storms was a vote for Latvala.

Here's Burgin's written statement:

“I am humbled to have represented State House District 56 for the past four years. State Senate District 24 encompasses many residents I have had the honor of representing since 2008,” said Representative Burgin.

“Senator Ronda Storms has served our community well for many years. Her steadfast and tireless commitment to conservative values and principles and her dedication to our community’s children have been extraordinary. My commitment is to work tirelessly to advance our shared values and principles in the Florida Senate.”

“The Senate needs true leaders that are willing to take a stand on behalf of the constituents they represent not just the special interests that may want their vote. The people of Florida have told us they want fresh faces, good morals, strong ethics and hard workers in Tallahassee who refuse to participate in politics as usual. As I run this race I will work hard to listen and continue to represent the residents of our community in the Florida Senate”

Gary Siplin has agreed to a $3,000 fine stemming from violations during his 2008 re-election campaign, the News Service of Florida reported today. The Florida Elections Commission is expected to finalize the settlement in August. Siplin is accused of leaving out information on campaign-finance reports and accepting an illegal campaign contribution from a phosphate-industry group.

It has been a rough week for the Orlando Democrat, known for breaking with his party on crucial votes and currying favor with Republicans for pet projects.

The Florida Times-Union published a report Sunday accusing Siplin and fellow Sen. Stephen Wise, R-Jacksonville, of using a shadow program at Florida A&M University to pass through funds to non-profits the senators are affiliated with.
The elections complaint against Siplin says he violated the law by failing to list the names and addresses of poll workers who were paid using campaign funds and that he received two $500 contributions from Florida Phosphate CCE before the primary, violating the $500 limit.

Siplin is barred from running for re-election because of term limits. His wife, Victoria, is currently campaigning for his Senate seat.

Here is the News Service's full report:

By JIM SAUNDERS
THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

TALLAHASSEE -- The Florida Elections Commission in August likely will consider a settlement that would lead to Sen. Gary Siplin paying a $3,000 fine because of missing information on campaign-finance reports and an excessive contribution from a phosphate-industry group.

The case, which stems from Siplin's 2008 re-election campaign, had been scheduled to go before an administrative law judge June 7. But attorneys filed a document this week requesting that the case be sent back to the elections commission because a settlement had been reached.

Siplin's finance reports did not fully detail the names and addresses of poll workers who received payments from his campaign, the settlement says. Such information is required by law.

"Respondent (Siplin) delegated these responsibilities to campaign staff, and he believed that all reports included all information required by law,'' the settlement says. "However, respondent acknowledges that he is ultimately responsible for all information contained in his campaign reports."

The Orlando Democrat also received two $500 contributions before the 2008 primary election from Florida Phosphate CCE, a political committee funded by a wide range of businesses involved in the phosphate industry. Under state law, Siplin could only receive $500 from the group before the primary.

Siplin asked last year that the case go before an administrative law judge after the elections commission found probable cause that he had committed violations. Siplin's attorney, Mark Herron, said the decision to settle the case instead of going through an administrative hearing would save legal fees.

Herron, who has represented numerous politicians in ethics and elections-law cases, described the violations as "bookkeeping errors."

"These are basically reporting violations that we're talking about here,'' Herron said.

Siplin, an attorney who was elected to the Senate in 2002 after serving two years in the House, has faced a string of legal and ethical questions in recent years. The Florida Times-Union, for example, reported last weekend that Siplin and Sen. Steve Wise, R-Jacksonville, have used Florida A&M University to funnel millions of tax dollars to two non-profit organizations with close ties to the lawmakers.

Siplin will be forced to leave office this fall because of term limits, but his wife, Victoria, is running to try to succeed him. Both Siplins had been scheduled for depositions May 18 in the elections-commission case, but those depositions were not held. Siplin agreed to the settlement May 4, according to a copy provided by Herron.

In finding probable cause last year, the elections commission said Siplin's reports included three expenditures, totaling $13,000, to Bank of America that were listed as being for "money orders for poll workers." But it said the information did not include the full names and addresses of the poll workers.

A commission staff recommendation said Siplin's campaign treasurer indicated poll workers were paid with money orders because the Florida Democratic Party did not pay them and the campaign did not have enough checks.

The porn-scandal engulfing the Tampa-area's property appraiser, Rob Turner, has so infuriated state Sen. Ronda Storms that she plans to resign office and run against him in the Republican primary.

"We need to restore honesty and integrity to the office," Storms said. "I'm not going to stand by silent. A Republican has to challenge him. We can't have no response and let the only political response to his actions come from the other side (Democrats."

Storms decision will set off a mad dash for her seat in Tallahassee and ultimately affects the insider Republican battle between St. Petersburg's Jack Latvala and St. Augustine's John Thrasher to be Senate President in two years. Storms was a vote for Latvala.

The names Storms has heard might want to replace her (or be persuaded to try): Former Sen. Tom Lee, her predecessor; Rep. Rachel Burgin, Rep. Shawn Harrison and, potentially, Rep. Rich Glorioso.

Lee and Burgin seem to be the most-favored. Burgin has an edge in that she's an incumbent and moneyman Sam Rashid, who fashions himself as a kingmaker, might favor her more. Lee, whom the lobby corps dislikes for forcing lobbyist reforms, still has access to heavy-hitter fundraisers and knows the game better than the others. Lee announced later that he'd run, Burgin is expected to confirm soon.

Storms will be missed by advocates for kids and the elderly. A fierce advocate, Storms was as complete a true Christian conservative as the state Capitol has seen in years. She walked the talk. She didn't just favor rights for the unborn, she was one of the few voices who consistently advocated for the least of these.

Storms could have a tough time winning the county-wide office. Democrat Bob Henriquez, a former House member, has filed to run and is an insider favorite.

Storms said she was angered by Turner for being "unrepentant" and remaining in office after aditting to the Tampa Bay Times that "he repeatedly sent pornography to his human resources director, a woman he fired Monday."

Turner said he fired Carolyn Filippone, a long-time employee of the public agency, for making false sexual discrimination claims about him to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in a complaint that included his porn sharing.

That complaint was dismissed last month by the EEOC, according to records obtained by the Tampa Bay Times, opening a window for her to file a lawsuit.

The property appraiser, up for election this year to a fifth term, said several aspects of Filippone's complaint — including that she was ostracized from co-workers for refusing his sexual advances — were false.

Though much maligned nationally, the state's "stand your ground" law at the center of the Trayvon Martin shooting case is well-liked by a majority of Florida voters, according to a new poll conducted by Quinnipiac University.

About 56 percent support the law and 35 percent oppose it, the poll released Thursday shows.

A majority opposes stricter gun-control laws. And a plurality of voters think that Tampa shouldn't be allowed to ban guns during the August Republican National Convention. But one place where an overwhelming majority Florida voters — 83 percent — think guns don't belong: the state Capitol.

That last finding drew a chuckle from gun-law critic Chris Smith, a Fort Lauderdale Democratic senator who's trying to amend "stand your ground" in the wake of the Trayvon shooting.

"Floridians love their guns," he said. "And they love the idea of "stand your ground". But when they learn it gives shooters immunity from arrest — when they learn it gives a tremendous presumption used by gangsters and thugs — then even my conservative friends think it should be changed."

But the National Rifle Association, which drafted the 2005 law and holds tremendous sway in the Florida Legislature, is fighting any changes to "stand your ground". The NRA for years has expanded gun rights and persuaded the Legislature to limit police, prosecutors and employers from controlling, monitoring or cracking down on guns.

The 2005 "stand your ground" law drew intense scrutiny after 17-year-old Travyon Martin, of Miami Gardens, was shot and killed on Feb. 26 in Sanford as he returned home from a convenience store. George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain, was charged with second-degree murder. He claims he shot the teen in self-defense.

Under the law, a person can "meet force with force" and can use deadly force if a person "reasonably" feels he's in mortal peril. The law eliminated a citizen's duty to retreat if confronted in public.

Zimmerman wasn't initially arrested and charged. Police cited "stand your ground". A national uproar ensued.

"Despite the controversy, public opinion seems to be solidly behind '"stand your ground"' and slightly against stricter gun control," said Peter Brown, assistant director of Quinnipiac's polling institute.

Support for the "stand your ground" law ran mostly along political party lines, the poll showed. Republicans overwhelmingly support it, 78-15 percent. Independents also support it, 58-35 percent. Democrats oppose it, 59-32 percent. Men back the law, 65-31 percent, while women favor it, 48-39 percent. Support is 61-31 percent among white voters. Hispanic voters support it, 53-36 percent. Black voters oppose it, 56-30 percent.

The law's strongest support comes from the state's most-rural and conservative areas, North Florida and the Panhandle, where 65 percent favor "stand your ground" and 30 percent oppose it. The least support was in liberal South Florida, Trayvon's home, where 46 percent favor it and 44 percent oppose it.

Generally, when it comes to gun control, the poll shows 51 percent oppose stricter laws and 45 percent favor them. A narrower segment of the electorate, 49 percent, say Tampa should be allowed to temporarily ban guns during the RNC convention while 46 favor the idea. Voters from the Tampa Bay region are the most-inclined to favor the temporary RNC ban.

State Rep. Dennis Baxley, an Ocala Republican and drafter of the "stand your ground" bill, said he was comforted with the wide support for gun rights and the specific support for "stand your ground".

"It reflects that largely people endorse the idea of self-empowerment and standing with victims of violent attacks," he said. "We continue to see a reduction in violent crime. These are strong reasons to be very careful when people talk about changing this law."

Miami's Temple Israel yanked a program featuring Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz after a high-profile Republican donor quit the congregation in protest of the Democratic congresswoman's involvement.

Stanley Tate, a well-known philanthropist who started Florida's pre-paid college tuition program, resigned from the temple in protest after he learned Wasserman Schultz would be talking about Israel Friday night and he wouldn't get a chance at rebuttal.

Both are highly political people. As chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Wasserman Schultz is one of President Barack Obama's top mouthpieces. Tate is a co-chair of Mitt Romney's campaign in Miami-Dade County, and also has a national role in the GOP presidential candidate's campaign.

Tate's resignation, first reported by the Shark Tank blog, came after he asked the temple's leadership to let him speak in response to Wasserman Schultz. When they wouldn't do so, Tate said he would leave the congregation.

"She's the chairperson of the Democratic National Committee," he said. "The topic is U.S.-Israel relationship. There cannot be any conversation on that topic, none, unless it has to do with the politics."

It's not unusual for Florida politicians -- or any political figures -- to speak at religious institutions, and Wasserman Schultz's office said she is regularly invited to do so. The temple is just outside her congressional district, which straddles Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

The temple's president, Ben Kuehne, said that while they "certainly embrace the congresswoman's willingness to participate in one of our programs," the board decided "it's unwise to proceed with the program tomorrow."

"If I did anything to do -- anything wrong -- I completely apologize," Scott said upon his arrival at Miami International Airport. "The king's a wonderful person. He's a wonderful world leader. He's done so many wonderful things in his life. And we had a great conversation."

The governor said spoke to the king about jobs and about the upcoming 500-year anniversary of the discovery of Florida by Spain in 1913 1513.

Scott said he meant no harm by asking the king about his hunting trip to Botswana, which caused an uproar among Spaniards who said the king should not have taken such an expensive vacation at a time when his country's economy is in peril. (Juan Carlos is also an honorary president of Spain's branch of the World Wildlife Fund.)

Spaniards found out about the trip after the king fell out of bed and hurt his hip.

"The first thing I asked him about it was his hip, of course, because he had been injured," Scott said.

Charlie Reed, a blunt-talking champion of higher education who left Florida 14 years ago to run California's universities, is retiring.

Reed announced Thursday that he will step down as chancellor of CSU when a replacement is found, and that he and his wife will return to Florida.

"Throughout my time here, the CSU has grown by more than 100,000 students, and I have been honored to sign more than a million diplomas," Reed said in a statement. "I take great pride in the CSU's mission to serve California's students, and I am proud to have played a role in carrying out that mission during these critical years."

Reed was a close ally of former Florida Gov. Bob Graham, a Democrat. Reed left Florida in 1997 for the California position and in recent years has grappled with severe budget deficits resulting in a 35 percent drop in funding over the past four years. He left Florida in part because of what he saw as a steady erosion of support in the Legislature for this state's universities.

"Florida has a motto: We're cheap and we're proud of it," Reed said as he prepared to depart Florida for California. Five years ago, on a brief return visit to Tallahassee, he criticized state leaders for their constant meddling in the governing structure of higher education, and sharply criticized the Bright Futures scholarship program as the "dumbest" higher-ed policy he had seen.

AFP is reporting that Fidel Castro's niece, Mariela Castro, "hailed" President Obama for supporting gay marriage and the loosening of US-Cuba travel restrictions.

Speaking at a gay-rights conference in California, she also called the largely Republican Cuban-American community "a small group of delinquents."

"I would vote for President Obama," she said. "I think he's sincere and speaks from the heart."

AFP noted that her trip has been denounced by "opposition Republicans," but it totally failed to mention that Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Broward congresswoman, and Florida Sen. Bill Nelson (the only statewide elected Democrat) also opposed the granting of her visa.

Nelson specifically raised the issue of a wrongfully jailed American in Cuba.

"Allowing Raul’s daughter to come to the U.S. when the regime still holds Alan Gross makes no sense," Nelson said.

Castro apparently never mentioned Gross. But, according to an AP article, she made sure to give lecture about "justice and social equality."

Really. She said that. While Gross rots in jail.

"If we don't change our patriarchal and homophobic culture...we cannot advance as a new society, and that's what we want, the power of emancipation through socialism," she said . "We will establish relationships on the basis of social justice and social equality...It seems like a Utopia, but we can change it."

Nor, apparently, did she say that her uncle, with the support of her dad, rounded up gays during the AIDS crisis and had them sequestered in homosexual shtetls. Also, during the 1980 Cuban boatlift, Fidel Castro kicked gays out of Cuba, labeling them as "undesirables." (Old Miami Herald story in text file here)

It's unclear if reporters got near her. If so, hopefully someone asked her to square the contradiction of the scion and supporter of a dictator lecturing in the U.S. about equality and justice.

**Update: Republican Mitt Romney's campaign wants Obama's campaign to disavow the endorsement:

“President Obama should disavow the endorsement of the daughter of Cuban dictator Raul Castro. It is galling that an envoy from a Communist regime would come to our country and lecture the American people on who to vote for while the regime refuses to hold free and fair elections and systematically violates the human rights of its people. The decision by the Obama Administration to welcome Mariela Castro to our shores—a decision that has received rightful criticism from both Republicans and Democrats—continues to be an egregious affront to the people of Cuba and those who love freedom everywhere.” – Romney Campaign Adviser Alberto Martinez

Gov. Rick Scott's trade mission to Spain this week has helped the Spaniards -- who are suffering with a depressed economy -- laugh out loud.

Newspapers and local television shows are howling at the exchange of greetings between King Juan Carlos and Scott, who was joined by his wife, Annette.

Here's how protocol and politics became parody.

Upon entering the King's office, Scott immediately asks the Spanish royalty about his hunting trip to Botswana, where the King injured his hip -- getting out of bed.

"I've ridden elephants. I've never tried to shoot one," Scott joked in shaking the King's hand.

The King seemed taken aback by the topic -- a sore subject for him in more ways than one. Not only did the King hurt himself physically on the trip but also politically. Spaniards were ticked that the King took such an expensive hunting trip at a time when the country is in such dire economic straits. About one in four Spaniards are unemployed.

Scott made matters worse when he continued to talk to the King about the Botswana trip by telling the story of his trip to the same African country.

On and on the conversation went -- much to the chagrin of the royalty in the room.

the King appears anything but comfortable in chatting about Scott's adventures in Botswana with his wife Annette.

The final punch line: Annette tells the King she wishes he had been in the jeep with them on their Botswana safari.

King Juan Carlos maintained his composure and, alas, did not respond to the governor as he did, memorably, to Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez in a 2007 summit of heads of state held in Chile.

After Chávez repeatedly interrupted Spain's then-prime minister, Jose Luis Zapatero, the exasperated king told Chávez, "¿Por qué no te callas?" -- "Why don't you shut up?"

The king's words briefly became a catchphrase, printed on T-shirts and featured on cellphone ringtones.

Well, now we have a real political tussle -- not so much in the presidential and Senate races in FL, but among dueling polls.

Yesterday and today, Quinnipiac University found that Republican Mitt Romney was beating President Obama and that Republican Rep. Connie Mack was essentially tied with Sen. Bill Nelson. Quinnipiac also found Sen. Marco Rubio could give a small, 2 percentage-point boost to Romney's ticket.

But this morning, an NBC-Marist poll found different results. Some excerpts:

And in Florida, 46 percent of registered voters prefer Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson to 42 percent who said they would vote for Republican Rep. Connie Mack.....

In Florida and Virginia, Obama leads Romney by an identical four-point margin, 48 percent to 44 percent, among registered voters, including those who are undecided but leaning toward a particular candidate....

The NBC-Marist polls also make this clear: Adding potential home-state politicians to the Romney ticket doesn't change the results much in these battleground states.

An Obama-Biden ticket vs. one featuring Romney and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio produces the same head-to-head result in Florida -- 48 percent to 44 percent. But Romney adding former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush narrows it to a two-point Democratic lead, 47 percent to 45 percent.

What gives?

First off, these fluctuations simply happen with surveys. That's why polls have error margins (3% for Martis and 2.4% for Quinnipiac).

Also, there's a chance that Quinnipiac and Marist asked a different question about identifying party ID and registration (lengthy background here). We know that Quinnipiac asks respondents about party ID and doesn't scale (or weight) its polls to make sure that the Republican, Democrat and independents are represented in proportion to how they appear in the voter-registration rolls. Marist, however, could have weighted its poll or specifically targeted voters to ask about their party registration. If Marist used the same method as Quinnipiac, then please refer to the first point: This stuff happens.

From a press release:

U.S. Rep. Connie Mack holds a wide lead in the race for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination, getting 40 percent of the vote to 7 percent for former Sen. George LeMieux and 8 percent for Tea party favorite Mike McCalister, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.*** Another 41 percent are undecided.

A general election matchup is too close to call as Mack gets 42 percent to Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson’s 41 percent.

Gov. Rick Scott’s job approval has risen above 40 percent for the first time, although he still remains underwater with a negative 41 – 46 percent rating from voters, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey finds.

A majority of registered voters, 56 – 35 percent, support the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law that has come under recent scrutiny. Support is 78 – 15 percent among Republicans and 58 – 35 percent among independent voters while Democrats are opposed 59 – 32 percent. Men support “Stand Your Ground” 65 – 31 percent while women support it 48 – 39 percent. Support is 61 – 31 percent among white voters and 53 – 36 percent among Hispanic voters while black voters are opposed 56 – 30 percent.

“Although some activists have been critical of Congressman Connie Mack and his campaign, he retains an overwhelming lead in the race for the Republican Senate nomination and is tied with Sen. Bill Nelson,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

“It is not clear how the late entrance of former Congressman Dave Weldon into the race will affect the campaign, but Mack’s lead is pretty formidable with three months until the primary.”

*** There will be some partisan handwringing regarding the undersample of self-identified Democrats in the poll. Go here for more about that

The onslaught has begun.

Millions of dollars in political ads are flooding Florida TV, including two new spots Wednesday by President Barack Obama’s campaign and an anti-Obama ad from a super PAC, the new breed of political action committee powered by unrestricted donations.

The volleys come after several weeks of building intensity and set the table for a congested summer and fall in the country’s largest swing state.

“Not only will it be incomparable, it’s uncharted territory for everybody,” said Florida Republican strategist Adam Goodman, who is concerned about finding air space for legislative and congressional races. “Your stuff is going to have to be pretty damn good to break through that clutter.”

Obama’s new spots, boasting about his support for military veterans with a reminder to voters about the killing of Osama bin Laden, and steps to preserve Medicare, closely follow the ad by the group Crossroads GPS depicting a fictional former Obama voter.

“I supported President Obama because he spoke so beautifully. He promised change,” says a woman who ages before viewers. “But things changed, for the worse.”

The ad is critical but deftly so, reflecting the desired target: swing voters who will likely decide the outcome in November. Despite a poor economy, Obama is still widely liked. A Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday showed 76 percent of Florida voters think he is likeable, even if they favor Republican Mitt Romney in the election.

Get ready to see a lot of it.
