<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><a href="http://andreawren.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a60c4a36970b-pi" style="float: right;"><img alt="Fear of flying" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a60c4a36970b " src="http://andreawren.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a60c4a36970b-800wi" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="Fear of flying" /></a> We all know that
statistically flying is by far the safest means of transport, but
that doesn't stop even the hardiest of passengers suffering a
fleeting jolt of panic every time a slight bump of turbulence is
felt.<br /><br />To this end I have compiled a few little facts that
might explain all those unpleasant sensations and noises, and a few
tips to keep you more comfortable and jet-lag-free!<br /><br />To start
with, anxiety is perfectly understandable; after all, it's not often
in our daily lives that we give complete control over our personal
safety into the hands of a stranger in such extreme circumstances.
However, just look at the faces of the stewardesses. They're
completely relaxed and, even when busy and tired, still manage to
walk about the cabin perfectly calmly without the need for a large
stiff gin and two Valium. They are completely at ease with being on
an aircraft day in and day out, so I always think, if they can do it,
so can I!<br /><br />All planes will make odd thunking noises (when the
landing gear retracts or comes down), or changes in engine noise that
make it seem like the plane is decelerating. All this is perfectly
normal so try not to pay any attention to it; sitting there listening
anxiously to the sound of the engines won't help your general state
of comfort! Put on the earphones and listen to some music
instead.<br /><br />Turbulence is also completely normal. Most planes fly
above extreme weather conditions, and the pilot will know if there
are any patches of turbulence coming up and will advise you
accordingly; planes are built to withstand these sorts of pressures,
so once again, keep an eye on the faces of the stewardesses! They
don't panic when turbulence happens, so you don't need to either!<br /><br /><a href="http://andreawren.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a60c4a61970b-pi" style="float: right;"><img alt="Rescue spray" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a60c4a61970b " src="http://andreawren.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a60c4a61970b-800wi" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="Rescue spray" /></a> I
find the homeopathic remedies aconite and arnica to be excellent for
pre-flight anxiety, but by far the best remedy I have found is <font color="#0000ff"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="http://girlstravelclub.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=3_57">Rescue
Remedy</a></span></font>. A couple of squirts is incredibly helpful and
will ease those dreadful butterflies. Sit upright, place your palms
on your thighs, and push hard with your feet against the floor; you
should breathe slowly in through the nose and out through the mouth
then you will feel out the fear and tension go out of your body!<br /><br />In
addition, if you start to hyperventilate, breathe slowly in and out
of the paper bag in your seat pocket.<br /><br />Make sure you know where
your nearest exit is just in case of an emergency landing; smoke is
the biggest danger if this should happen, and visibility may be poor,
so always count how many rows away the doors are so you could do it
in the dark if you had to.<br /><br />As to the effect on your body,
well, you are in a very artificial situation, and it's no wonder that
you feel a bit disorientated as a result. When you are flying at an
altitude of 12,000 metres, the cabin is artificially pressurised to
around 1500-2000 metres; most people live at around sea level so to
be rocketed to this altitude in a very short space of time is going
to take its toll. However, there are ways you can minimise the
discomfort.
<ul>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-top: 0.49cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Wear
	loose clothing, as your body swells in the thinner air of the cabin.</p>
	</li>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Take your shoes off,
	and have a blanket ready as the temperature can rise and fall quite
	a lot.</p>
	</li>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Cocoon yourself with
	an <font color="#0000ff"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="http://girlstravelclub.co.uk/index.php?cPath=3_37">eyemask
	and earplugs</a></span></font> and try to rest comfortably (bring your
	own as many airlines don't provide them any more).</p>
	</li>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Drink lots of water;
	I know there is a temptation to avoid drinking, just so you don't
	have to get up to go to the loo but it won't help you feel better in
	the long run!</p>
	</li>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Seats in the middle
	of the plane are best if you suffer from motion sickness.</p>
	</li>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Suck a sweet on
	take-off and landing to help your ears adjust. They don't seem to
	provide them onboard anymore so make sure you've got some in your
	bag.</p>
	</li>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 0.49cm;">Avoid spicy foods
	before take-off and on the plane, as your body is struggling enough
	without having any extra strain on the digestion!</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify; margin-top: 0.49cm; margin-bottom: 0.49cm;">Jetlag
occurs because the body's Circadian Rhythms are out of sync with the
time zone of the new destination, and can lead to tiredness,
disorientation and bad temper; it can even effect the body's immune
system.<br /><br />Normally hormones and serotonin are released into the
bloodstream and govern our appetite and sleep patterns; when we
change zones these are affected and it is thought it can take one day
for every time zone crossed to recover our health and energy. The dry
air on board can also make passengers more susceptible to all the
bacteria breathed out by their fellow travellers, and even the
efficiency of the digestive system can be affected.<br /><br />So what
can we do? Well, travelling to the east is worst than the west
symptomatically. If heading east, eat as little as possible and try
to get as much sleep as you can. If going west, you are lengthening
your day so try and avoid sleeping until you get there.</p>
<ul>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-top: 0.49cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">When
	you get on board change your watch to the new time zone to help get accustomed to it.</p>
	</li>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Exercise. Keep
	walking about and wiggling your toes and even try some simple
	stretching; many airlines now have instructions for some exercises
	in their inflight magazine. You might look like a bit of a womble
	but it will help your circulation and make you feel better; it will
	also help reduce to risk of DVT so keep wiggling about!</p>
	</li>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 0cm;">A celebrity we know
	who flies all round the world frequently swears by putting a piece
	of brown paper in each shoe; apparently it really works, though we
	have no idea how!</p>
	</li>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Lavender on your
	travel pillow or a tissue helps you to sleep and is very good for
	alleviating the symptoms of jetlag; add a few drops to your bath
	when you get there and put a couple of drops on your pillow as well.</p>
	</li>
<li><p style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Arnica is very good
	for restoring sleep patterns, while our<font color="#0000ff"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="http://girlstravelclub.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=3_57&amp;products_id=99">

The Go Tours to participate in their 11-day <a href="http://www.onthegotours.com/Migration-of-the-Berber">Migration of the Berbers</a>
tour, an inaugural trip that was to be the experience of a lifetime
for me, in more ways than one!
</p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">I was heading out there as a journalist
to write about the trek for adventure travel magazine Wanderlust, and I felt
it was very much a privilege to have such an opportunity, which you
can now read all about in the <a href="http://www.wanderlust.co.uk/currentissue">November issue of Wanderlust</a>.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Of course, being on this trip also gave
me the chance to try it out from a customer-perspective. It was my
first 'real' trek – and I found it tough as a 'newbie' to trekking,
not helped by the fact that I got a dicky tummy and the facilities
were truly back to basics, which means popping behind a rock when you
needed to go!</p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">However, wanting to be part of a very
unique experience such as the Berber migration, where the nomadic
Berbers leave the lower valleys and head into the mountains for the
summer (and also do the trek in the opposite direction for the
winter), there was no other way to do it than go 'back to nature'.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><a href="http://andreawren.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a6011118970b-pi" style="float: right;"><img alt="Andrea Migration of the Berbers" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a6011118970b " src="http://andreawren.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a6011118970b-800wi" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="Andrea Migration of the Berbers" /></a> Camping surrounded by the sounds of the
herds, spending evenings around the fire with the Berbers, and
trekking through magnificent and totally off-the-beaten-track
mountain trails following camels was all part of what this tour
offered. </p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">It was something that very few people on the planet ever get to be part of, and I came back feeling not only like I'd really achieved something, but also that I'd had my eyes open to a totally different way of life.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The next Migration of the Berbers tour
will run in May 2010, and having first-hand experience of it, if
you're interested to book, I'm very well-placed to advise. </p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">As a special gift if you do book through Wren Elite Travel, I'll also
throw in a Lonely Planet Encounter guide to Marrakesh for the time
you spend in this vibrant city (you have 3 nights here!).</p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The tour is £599 per person not including flights and based on two-sharing, plus a local payment of EURO 300. </p>

holiday, in one holiday? The answer is visit<a href="http://www.tourismcapetown.co.za/"> Cape Town and the
Western Cape</a>, where I've just come back from - and I have to honestly
say, it's one of the best holidays I've ever had. Shall I tell you
why?

<p>South Africa first of all is a great destination – no jet lag, a
place you can visit all year round, easy to get to, easy to drive
around, and great value for money. As a South Africa Specialist –
I can sing the country's praises until the buffalo come home, but
I'll try and keep this to Cape Town and the rest of the Western Cape.</p>
<p>Cape Town city is rich in history and from <a>Robben Island</a> to the
 <a href="http://www.districtsix.co.za/">District Six Museum</a>, you will find incredible stories of how people
lived and survived through the country's apartheid period to be the
place it is today. Drive around <a href="http://www.bokaap.co.za/">Bo Kaap</a> (or do a walking tour) to see the brightly coloured
houses, wander through the <a href="http://www.waterfront.co.za/Pages/Welcome.aspx">V&amp;A Waterfront</a> for shopping and
wonderful restaurants, hit Long Street for bars and nightlife, and do not miss riding the cable car to the top of <a href="http://tablemountain.net/">Table Mountain</a>.</p>
<p>You will find gorgeous beach suburbs surrounding Cape Town such as
Camps Bay, and a drive or tour down to <a href="http://www.capepoint.co.za/">Cape Point and the Cape of
Good Hope</a> should not be missed – where as well as the stunning
scenery and views, you also see ostriches and baboons freely roaming
as wild animals (just take care to keep your car doors locked – we
had a baboon get in our car!).<a href="http://andreawren.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a658008c970c-pi" style="float: right;"><img alt="Penguin on Boulders Beach" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a658008c970c " src="http://andreawren.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a658008c970c-320wi" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px; width: 200px; height: 250px;" /></a> </p>
<p>Exploring with a driving itinerary, as I did with my friend, is an
excellent way to see the rest of the Western Cape. We took the
coastal route heading out to towns like <a href="http://www.hermanus.co.za/">Hermanus</a> - where in peak
whale spotting season as we were, we saw a number of Southern Rights
frolicking in the waters!</p>
<p>Highly recommended is a boat trip to spot whales – and Hermanus
is not the only place to do this. We did ours from <a href="http://www.tourismcapetown.co.za/index.php?cityhome+97082">Mossel Bay</a>, which
is known as the gateway to the <a href="http://www.tourismcapetown.co.za/index.php?districthome+109558">Garden Route</a>, and from where you can
also visit Seal Island – where a colony of protected fur seals
live.</p>
<p>Driving over the Robertson Pass we headed to <a href="http://www.oudtshoorn.co.za/content/view/78/">Oudtshoorn </a>where the
<a href="http://www.cango-caves.co.za/">Cango Caves</a> can be toured and where (if you're under 75 kilos in
weight!) you can also ride an ostrich in one of the farms! I have to
say, I found this a bit of unnerving experience – though I would
not have left Oudsthoorn without trying it (oh, and without eating
ostrich lasagne).</p>
<p>We all did some off-the-beaten track exploring, such as driving
through the <a href="http://www.patourism.co.za/swartberg%20pass.htm">Swartberg Pass</a> – considered to be one of the most
spectacular mountain passes in the world and not one to be driven by
the faint-hearted!
</p>
<p>Driving back towards the <a href="http://www.tourismcapetown.co.za/index.php?districthome+100405">Cape Winelands</a> along <a href="http://www.route62.co.za/">Route 62</a> with an
overnight in <a href="http://www.tourismcapetown.co.za/index.php?cityhome+100479">Montagu</a> (we stayed at <a href="http://www.montagucountryhotel.co.za/">Montagu Country Hotel</a>) makes for a
wonderful restful stopover, as you can visit the hot springs here or
eat at the very excellent Jessica's.
</p>
<p><a href="http://andreawren.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a65802b2970c-pi" style="float: right;"><img alt="Cape winerie" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a65802b2970c " src="http://andreawren.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c0e7053ef0120a65802b2970c-320wi" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" /></a> But do include a couple of nights to stay in the Winelands, rather
than do a day tour out from Cape Town itself – <a href="http://www.tourismstellenbosch.co.za/index.php?cityhome+97099">Stellenbosch</a> and
<a href="http://www.franschhoek.org.za/">Franschhoek</a> are both wonderful towns to explore and stay in, and
offer excellent wineries to explore as well as wonderful places to
eat and drink. If you stay at a spa hotel in particular (such as the
<a href="http://www.proteahotels.com/protea-hotel-dorpshuis-spa.html">Protea Dorpshuis &amp; Spa</a> in Stellenbosch), you can combine spa and wine – the
perfect way to end an incredible Western Cape holiday.</p>
<p><strong>When to go</strong>
</p>
<p>Really, you can visit Cape Town year round, though it does have a
more temperate climate than the rest of South Africa so you might
find the winter months of June to August a bit chillier along the
coastal side (it tends to stay warm over the mountains in the Little
Karoo though).</p>
<p>Shoulder season months of April or September are good because
prices are lower and there are far less visitors, though you might
experience rain and chilly winds, or you might not – you just never
know! December to February is peak season – very hot and many more
people, with peak prices.
</p>

Not only were the couples attending very receptive to hearing about our honeymoon services, there were tribute acts, drag queens and sample civil ceremonies to watch and keep entertained by.</p><p>It was the first time Wren Elite Travel has been at a wedding show and by all accounts, talking to other exhibitors there, it was one of the best to actually participate in. It was fun, colourful, and inclusive - there were a few straight couples attending as well, to make sure they didn't miss finding out about the quality exhibitors who were there.</p><p>I also teamed up with a friend, Lindsay Robinson, who does wonderful wedding stationery - <a href="http://www.lindsaydesign.co.uk/">Lindsay Design</a> - so we had stands near by each other and could chat and help each other out. We're likely to be working together in the future, and her beautiful and original designs are really worth checking out.</p><p>Looking forward to being at next year's show already! (And to helping all the lovely couples we met at this year's show with their honeymoons, of course!).</p></div>

If they were the chosen winner, along with FIVE friends, they would be the first to go on the new Exodus holiday!</p><p>Well, that winner has now been announced as Nicola Watson and the Adventure Pioneers tour, a fabulous journey through Istanbul to Tehran, taking in Lake Van, Shiraz, and Isfahan, as well as joining the Trans Asia Express, is to take place for the first time in September this year. </p><p>What a fabulous and exciting prize - Nicola must be thrilled to pieces, but if you fancy joining her and her friends, the trip departs on 22nd September and costs from £1649 including flights. Have you booked an Arctic cruise or Antarctic cruise? Here some tips from Kumuka (one of the adventure touring companies that <a href="http://www.wrenelitetravel.co.uk">Wren Elite Travel</a> works with) on keeping warm for your trip:</font><span size="2" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong /></span></p><p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">1. Wicking thermals are the latest and most definitely
greatest. They keep you toasty warm whilst 'wicking' away any unwanted sweat, they
are comfortable, take up no room in your luggage and you can wash them anywhere.
</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><strong />2. Goretex lined shoes or boots make a huge difference
when it comes to sub zero temperatures</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><strong />3. If you really want to be decadent, take fleecy lined
trousers, these days you can even buy jeans with such a lining!</font></p><p>I would also like to add a couple of extra tips:</p><p>4. Be sure to pack some emergency hand warmer gel packs - some can stay warm for hours and they are really handy to be kept stored in your jacket if your gloves should get wet / lost / left behind.</p><p>5. Think layers! Lots of layers such as a synthetic base layer vest, thin fleece long-sleeved tops, zip up fleece jackets and then an over-jacket.</p></div>
