film and video to bear witness to the cultural, political, and
psychological imperatives of the AIDS crisis. He explains how queer
films and videos made in response to the AIDS epidemics in North
America, Europe, Australia, and South Africa challenge longstanding
assumptions about both historical trauma and the politics of gay
visibility. Drawing on a wide range of works, including activist tapes,
found footage films, autobiographical videos, documentary portraits,
museum installations, and even film musicals, Hallas reveals how such
“queer AIDS media” simultaneously express both immediacy and historical
consciousness. Queer AIDS media are neither mere ideological critiques
of the dominant media representation of homosexuality and AIDS nor
corrective attempts to produce “positive images” of people living with
HIV/AIDS. Rather, they perform complex, mediated acts of bearing
witness to the individual and collective trauma of AIDS.

Challenging
the entrenched media politics of who gets to speak, how, and to whom,
Hallas offers a bold reconsideration of the intersubjective relations
that connect filmmakers, subjects, and viewers. He explains how queer
testimony reframes AIDS witnesses and their speech through its striking
combination of direct address and aesthetic experimentation. In
addition, Hallas engages recent historical changes and media
transformations that have not only displaced queer AIDS media from
activism to the archive, but also created new witnessing dynamics
through the logics of the database and the remix. Reframing Bodies
provides new insight into the work of Gregg Bordowitz, John Greyson,
Derek Jarman, Matthias Müller, and Marlon Riggs, and offers critical
consideration of important but often overlooked filmmakers, including
Jim Hubbard, Jack Lewis, and Stuart Marshall.

Roger Hallas is an assistant professor of English at Syracuse University. He is a co-editor of The Image and the Witness: Trauma, Memory, and Visual Culture.

The figurative painter, Hugh Steers, who died of AIDS in 1995, was one of those people for me. (read more here)

Biography:
Scott Hunt is a figurative artist whose discipline is works on paper, specifically charcoal and pastel drawings. He is represented by Goff + Rosenthal. His work has also been included in several group shows, most recently at Wartburg College in Iowa (October 2009), as well as at Cream Contemporary in Berlin (through January 16, 2010) with the artists Cornelia Renz and Joe Biel. He is a recipient of a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and a grant from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His work is included in many private international collections and is part of the permanent collection of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Mr. Hunt is proud and grateful to have his work preserved as part of the Frank Moore Archive Project. He lives in Manhattan with his partner, David Schachter

From the New York Times obituary, Saturday, March 4, 1995
Hugh Auchincloss Steers, a figurative painter, died on March 1 (1995) at the home of his cousin, Hugh D. Auchincloss Jr. He was 32 and lived in Manhattan. The cause was AIDS, said his dealer, Richard Anderson.

Mr. Steers, who was born in Washington and studied at Yale University, painted in a style that mixed dreamlike allegory with Expressionist-tinged realism and incorporated art history references. In the last five years his work had increasingly dealt with AIDS. Many of his paintings showed single male figures, almost nude or in women's clothes, isolated in dark rooms; others depicted pairs of men bathing and dressing each other or embracing. In his last works, shown at the Richard Anderson Gallery in the fall, Mr. Steers included a recurrent male figure that he regarded as a self-portrait. Dressed in a white hospital gown and white high heels, the figure entered the lives of other characters as both an avenging and a guardian angel. His work is in the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Denver Art Museum.

He is survived by his mother, Nina Auchincloss Straight, and his stepfather, Michael Straight, both of Washington, and by two brothers, Burr, of Los Angeles, and Ivan, of Manhattan.

image: Hugh Steers, Breathing, 1987, Oil on paper. Why talk about HIV/AIDS to the people in your life? We know that open and honest conversations can prevent new HIV infections and reduce the stigma attached to people living with HIV/AIDS. And because every 9 minutes an American is infected with HIV, we need to educate ourselves and others about the virus. Join the conversation. Share why you talk about HIV/AIDS to the people in your life and why this is important to you. Visit http://youtube.com/italkbecause to see more videos and to find out how to start the conversation.

His large-scale carved wood block panels evoke both medieval shrines and the woodblock prints of 20th-century German Expressionists, but their bright colors and folksy quality make them accessible to a wide range of audiences. For Day With(out) Art MOCRA will feature one of his last works, titled The Promise, which references the legend of St. Christopher, who carried the infant Jesus across a turbulent river. Kellard depicts himself in the role of St. Christopher. The Promise asserts the possibility of hope and compassion in the midst of suffering.

The Promise was included in the 1992-93 international traveling exhibition From Media to Metaphor: Art about AIDS, and in the 1994 exhibition Art’s Lament: Creativity in the Face of Death (organized by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston). Kellard’s own life was cut short by AIDS. He died in the fall of 1991 at the age of 32.

MOCRA
Saint Louis University
3700 West Pine Mall Blvd, St. Louis, Missouri
