It is not unfamiliar to any of us. We have done all this before. We have gone through the rituals, we have heard the stories, we have seen the colors, we have smelled the smells, and we have heard the songs…..and that is precisely what makes it extraordinary. No matter how often we have been here, we never tire of it. We are always ready to do it all over again….no matter who we are.

We were in Charlottesville this past week and, as you might expect, we were out and about among the throngs hitting the stores….and it was fascinating…people from all over the world, all ages, mingling about from store to store and a large number of them singing along with the canned music. Tattooed, pierced, leather wearers, mom’s with strollers, little kids and seniors, humming, bobbing their heads or tapping their feet to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Blue Christmas. At any other time of year, you would never have seen such a thing….

And I wondered what is it? Why does this happen? When we can see our culture rapidly becoming more secular by the second, following close behind Europe in the dramatic decline of church attendance and participation, what happens at Advent to infuse a different mood into people? Something changes. And I don’t buy the theory that the transformation is induced by skilled hucksters and advertisers who know how to tantalize and tempt. There is something beyond all that that draws us in and won’t let us go.

The only thing to which I can point is a very mysterious characteristic with which we are all hardwired…..and that is the religious impulse. Since the dawn of civilization, and I mean the prehistoric dawn….the Neanderthal dawn….we can see clearly a spiritual presence and perceived divine reality in the lives of everyone. Neanderthals buried their dead, ancient tribes built ziggurats in their town centers, sacrificial altars took places of prominence, rites and rituals have been handed down through the millennia.

The desire to worship has always been there, deep inside us, and no matter how much some may try to ignore or dismiss it, doing so is impossible. Not only is it impossible to dismiss, people desperately need to experience, express and feed it. Church attendance may be declining, but the desperate desire to engage God is not…it just happens in different ways than we are usually accustomed.

So, how do people nurture and feed the religious impulse, even if they are not religious? The same way those of us who are religious feed it, with memory and imagination. Even though the majority of people out and about shopping in Charlottesville or New York, or Danville may have a step by step understanding of the events that led up to and immediately followed Jesus’ birth, they know something happened and somehow, that something that happened changed the world, that something that happened brought God and people closer together and did a lot to teach us how to be better people. Someone may remember being a shepherd in the school play, or maybe had to learn a couple of lyrics to Angels We Have Heard on High when in the school choir, but somehow that is enough to infuse the heart, to prompt memory and excite the imagination to consider that which is greater than ourselves.

The zaniness of Advent and the time leading to Christmas may be troubling for some, we may cluck at all the shopping and money being thrown about, seeming to forget the reason for the season…but in a strange way, all of this is a big part of the way of our people remember. Stores become churches where people gather and sing, and even pass the peace….”Happy Holidays” the clerks say, “Have a Merry Christmas”, the cash register operators offer as they hand us our bags.

Everywhere we go we are asked to remember…..”I have to remember to get something for Aunt Lucille….. and remember last year when uncle Burt got this same scarf and wondered what it was?” I’ve got to remember to get some gas so we don’t run out like we did last year on the way to the Millers party. All these memories, whether we consciously realize it or not are a huge part of the religious experience…..intimately tied to Jesus’ birth…..new prayers of a new age.

And there was another way God showed up during my walk through Best Buy…..not only were memories being ignited but imagination as well. Best Buy was a thumping temple of hope. People shopping for, discussing, comparing and ultimately buying durable goods….things that will be used and last…..for years.

There may be wars and rumors of wars. Bombs derailing trains in Russia, There may be natural disasters…Earthquakes in Bangaladesh, floods in Dubai, mudslides in El Salvador….Economic news may be troubling and dollars tight…. But durable goods are going fast…..tomorrow will come and we will be alive and we will live it. In the imaginations of people all over the world, there is hope.

The frightening apocalyptic vision Luke outlined for us in today’s gospel is going on all around us….it always has and always will. But imbedded in Jesus’ words about the tempestuous time to come is hope

Advent is underway and what it tells us is certain and simple……we do not know what the future holds….but we do know who holds the future. God wins.

….”and then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory….look up and raise your heads because your redemption is drawing near.”

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

Amen.

From an historical point of view, Jesus’ prophecy of the
destruction of Jerusalem’s great buildings suggests that Mark’s Gospel was
written during or shortly after 69 – 70 AD. It was during this time that the
Romans, in response to a Jewish rebellion in Palestine destroyed the Temple,
literally wiping away any trace of where it had been. Attributing such a
prophecy to Jesus would surely have increased Jesus’ standing among the people.

On a more whimsical note, the passage can be read as a
“tourist moment”, not unlike someone’s first visit to New York City – “Look,
Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!”

The passage is also an example of apocalyptic literature
about “the End Times” and the use of fear and guilt to coerce people into a
particular state or direction: “Do this or you will burn in hell!” Over the
centuries, the church has proven itself very proficient in the effective use of
fear and guilt.

But Jesus may have been saying something entirely different.
He may be saying to us that war, rumors of wars, and earthquakes will always be
with us. Don’t get caught up in worrying about when they will be over. They
won’t. There is no rescue. Rather, look to see what you can do to alleviate the
suffering and anguish which result.

Go There – to where people are suffering and anguished. It
is there that you will find the Kingdom of God.
