children dance?

I was washing my car at home recently. All the doors were
open and I had my mp3 player plugged into the radio with the music cranked up
on random play. Three young children – ages 2, 4 and 5 – were playing in their
yards at adjacent homes.

At one point, a song by James Brown came on – I Feel Good –
and it was loud.

Suddenly, all three of the neighboring children stopped what
they were doing and just began to dance. They moved and swayed easily to the
music as James Brown belted it out, oblivious to how they looked or who might
be watching.

Dancing seems hard-wired into young children’s make up. But
somewhere between age five and later adulthood, we seem to lose that easy,
uncaring ability to just dance.

Today’s Gospel lesson is about the ugly circumstances,
including a dance, leading to the be-heading of John the Baptizer. It is a
strange and unpleasant story for a Gospel reading.

But if we first look at
today’s lesson from 2 Samuel, what we find are two stories about two very different dances.

In the lesson from 2 Samuel, King David has recently
conquered the city of David and he is now leading a procession to bring the ark
of God to its new home in the city of David. It is a joyous procession filled
with people singing and dancing to songs and the music of lyres, harps,
tambourines, castanets, and cymbals.

At the head of the procession personally leading the dancing
with gusto is King David himself. The lesson says that, “David danced before
the Lord with all his might.” Once the ark had been taken to its new home, King
David offered burnt offerings to the Lord, and then he distributed food among
all the people.

Dancing and merriment, offerings to God, and then a common
meal…

In our Gospel lesson from Mark, we have a very different
story about dancing. King Herod had imprisoned John the Baptizer because John
had publicly rebuked Herod for taking his brother’s wife as his own. Herod’s
wife, Herodias, wished John killed but Herod feared John, and so John
languished in Herod’s prison. Until the feast…

Herod threw a great banquet in honor of his own birthday.
“And when his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his
guests.” And Herod said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will
give it.” The girl rushed to ask her mother, “What shall I ask for?”

Her mother – also named Herodias, and still seething about
John the Baptizer’s public rebuke, told her to “Ask for the head of John the Baptizer
on a platter.” Now Herod was caught in his promise and immediately sent for
John’s head on a platter.

The story of dancing in Mark’s Gospel is one of egos, hate,
fear, and prurient interests – not a pretty picture. And it is certainly not a
model of dancing which can help to heal the world’s wounds.

David’s model of the dance, on the other hand, is one we can
all follow.

We each dance our own dance everyday. We get up, walk down
the street, greet neighbors and friends, sit in our offices, get up from our
offices, and greet still other people.

In the Episcopal Church, and other Christian churches of
whatever flavor, we also share a dance. We come to worship, stand and sing,
kneel and pray, greet one another at the Peace, and then receive a common meal
at God’s altar.

We should neither worry about how we look, nor who may be
watching. The dance is about celebrating our relationship with God and our
common life together.

Dancing and merriment, offerings to God, and then a common
meal…

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

Amen

Next Sunday is Ascension Sunday when we will celebrate Jesus’ ascension into Heaven to be with the Father. In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus is preparing his disciples (friends) for his imminent departure.

When we leave this life, we will leave things behind. Jesus also left things behind. Three of those things are mentioned in today’s Gospel.

First, Jesus promised his followers the Father’s Love. We might be saying to ourselves, “That’s great; we would like some of that too please.” But are you sure that you know what Jesus meant by the “Father’s Love”?

Think about what the Father’s Love meant to Jesus.

The Father sent him to be born in a stable, not even a good hotel.

The Father’s Love meant that Jesus was rejected and vilified by some of his own people.

In the end, the Father’s Love meant that Jesus was arrested, tortured and put to death.

Receiving the Father’s Love is not for the faint of heart.

Second, Jesus left his followers friendship. Friendship is a unique relationship, a different kind of love.

When we first think of love, the notion of lovers comes to mind. Lovers face each other. They are focused on each other, their feelings for each other, their moments of intimacy together.

Friends, on the other hand, walk side by side. They talk to each other sideways. They are not focused on themselves but rather the common causes or activities that bind them together. They are moving forward together, side by side.

Third, Jesus left his followers the church. The church is the body of believers, which sustains us in our faith and provides a vehicle through which we face the world together.

The church was not meant to bring us happiness in this life. Happiness is elusive. Thomas Jefferson did not write that happiness was our God given right; rather, he spoke of the pursuit of happiness.

Rather than happiness, we should seek joy – that deep-seated feeling of satisfaction that comes from knowing that we are engaged in something bigger than ourselves, the benefits of which will accrue to others not just to ourselves alone.

Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

Amen.

Theologians through
the ages have written about Christians’ penchant for a “milquetoast Jesus,” who
is, in today’s parlance, something of a wimp. Dorothy Sayers, better known for
her Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries than her essays, wrote in exasperation in her
book The
Greatest Drama Ever Staged:

“We have very
efficiently pared the claws of the Lion of Judah, certified him ‘meek and
mild,’ and recommended him as a fitting household pet for pale curates and
pious old ladies.”

We don’t have to look
very far to see this image played out in liturgy and song. Think of the hymn:

Awake, awake to love
and work!
The lark is in the sky;
The fields are wet with diamond dew;
The world’s awake to cry
Their blessings on the Lord of life,
As He goes meekly by.

Jesus is depicted
here as meekly passing by.

Walk into church
halls across the land, and any depictions of Jesus will be soft, solemn,
composed.

The scripture passage
we call “The Beatitudes” -- or as the writer Robert Schuller publicized them,
the Be
(Happy) Attitudes -- is much preferred over Jesus throwing the
moneychangers out of the temple. Jesus welcoming children is more often cited
as descriptive of our Lord than his pronouncement “I come not to bring peace,
but a sword.”

In an odd sort of way,
all of this is consistent, too, with our current trends toward inactivity and
obesity. Overall, in our lives as in our faith, it is much more comfortable to
sit still -- to take a load off and rest awhile -- than to be active.

Jesus tells his
disciples, “Abide in me.” Oh, this is comforting! These words are alluring and
welcoming and warm. We love to hear the reassurance that comes with our Lord
inviting us into a kind of security, a resting in the everlasting arms of Jesus
just like the old hymn proclaims. These words have been offered for generations
as words of comfort. They declare the loving goodness of Jesus, the gentle
savior.

“I am the true vine,
and my Father is the vine grower. … Abide in me as I abide in you. … If you
abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will
be done for you.”

Good news! Comforting
and encouraging words! But is that all? So often this seems to be the sense of
this lesson, indeed of the entire Gospel message and of Jesus. But there’s more
to it than that. If we stop with the comforting words, we miss the message.

This passage also
includes the message of pruning, and being thrown away, and withering -- of
being thrown into the fire and burned. That is the part we often don’t hear,
and it is sobering.

The message of Jesus
is clear when read closely and in its entirety: he expects something of us. He
is not meek and mild, and doesn’t expect us to be. Our call is his call.

Another excerpt from
this same gospel reading demonstrates. “Abide in me as I abide in you. My
Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”
These words are from the same gospel reading, and even use the admonition
“Abide in me.” But listen closely to the difference: “Abide in me as
I abide in you.”

How many ways can we
say this today?
-- Quid pro quo.
-- No such thing as a free lunch.
-- What goes around comes around.

vIn other sayings of
Jesus we hear:
-- Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
-- Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against
us.
-- Love one another as God loves us.

However it’s phrased,
it’s a two-part deal. The responsibility goes both ways. There is mutuality,
reciprocity, an even exchange. Just as Jesus is not the meek and mild savior,
neither are his disciples expected to be lazy and inactive.

The image of the
vineyard is common throughout Old Testament scriptures and was a familiar image
for Israel. Perhaps it was rooted in the Garden of Eden and the tension between
being cast out and longing for return.

Vineyard language -- rich, harvest
language -- is used throughout the Hebrew Scriptures to describe Israel and the
promise of God’s restored goodness. Here, though, the vineyard language
describes our relationship to God through Jesus, and makes clear the
expectations of discipleship.

This is the time of
year when many of us (gardeners at heart), begin planting seeds, or hailing off
to the local nursery for bedding plants, or tending the shoots emerging from
winter soil. We know that just because we want something to grow doesn’t
guarantee that it will.

We also know that getting our roses to bloom means
cutting back the canes; that encouraging the growth of the tomato plants means
pinching off the gangly stems; that getting a second bloom from the impatiens,
or the pansies, or the sweet peas and zinnias, means cutting back the early
flowers.

If something is
growing where it doesn’t belong, we pull it out and call it a weed. If
something is dead, or not growing well, we cut it off. If something is too big,
or too small, we move it, stake it, tie it back. This is what John’s gospel
describes of God and the disciples’ learning process. Gardening is not an
armchair activity, and neither is faith. There are choices to be made. It is
difficult work.

This passage from
John’s gospel utilizes the image of vinedresser and vineyard to describe the
relationship between God and Christian believers. What is the purpose of such
care and tending? That we will bear fruit. That we may perhaps have a clearer
understanding of our relationship to the vine.

Today is Mother’s
Day. Many of us are mothers. Many of us have mothers. Any understanding of
motherhood includes cajoling, guiding, and giving – as well as taking away, in
the form of grounding, being put on “time out,” or being sent to our room.

Isn’t this a bit like God’s role as the Vinedresser? God tends, mother guides.
God counsels, mother teaches. God prunes, mother takes away, or puts on “time
out,” or in some way lets us know that we will behave!

In both cases, the
aim is to grow good fruit. For Mother, we are to become strong and wise and
educated and courageous and ethical and use very good table manners. For God,
well, for God we are to abide in God. Abide. Find our home in. Stake our claim
in.

That sounds so easy,
doesn’t it? We have only to glance again at the epistle reading from 1 John to
realize how hard this is. We must love our brothers and sisters.

Imagine this in the
family scenario: What does Mother do when we don’t love our brothers and
sisters? Remember the old expression “gettin’ smacked upside the head”?

John’s
gospel uses the more elegant language of pruning to describe the vineyard
scene, but it amounts to the same thing. We are to grow, to develop, to learn
well from our teachers and to live the life to which we are called. And it’s
hard work.

All of this
conviction that we are called and expected to answer our Lord’s love with
action, with fruit bearing, is rooted in our baptism with
the promise “I will, with God’s help.”
There’s that give-and-take construction again.

In this Easter season it is good
to remember that for the earliest Christians, baptism was the claiming of faith
and being claimed by God. It was the nurturing and tending of the seedling
until the tender shoot grew strong.

The preparation for baptism took months and
even years to accomplish because of all there was to learn and do in order to
take on an active role in the community of faith. We stand on the shoulders of
these saints in our present-day faith, charged to remember that the activity of
faith is not easy or optional.

“Abide in me as I
abide in you.” Jesus said. This doesn’t mean settle down, it means get busy.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

Amen.

I am the Good Shepherd.

People who live in sheep raising countries such as England,
Australia, and New Zealand have a different notion of and appreciation for sheep
and shepherds than most people would here in our own country.

The Bible is filled with stories about shepherds and herding
sheep. Think of the Psalms – especially Psalm 23.

The children of Israel had been a nomadic people whose
livelihoods and sustenance relied on sheep. Sheep provided meat and milk, wool
for clothing, and hides for making tents. Sheep were even used as a form of
money or exchange.

Our own image of shepherds watching their flocks by night
often seems peaceful, even idyllic. But the life of a shepherd was not like
that. It was hard, dirty work, often without sleep.

A shepherd had to be on guard constantly to protect his
sheep from predators – be they of the four-legged or the two-legged variety. If
a predator scattered or made off with a sheep, the shepherd was required to chase
and kill the predator and retrieve the sheep even if it was already injured or
dead.

For a sheep-herding family, the sheep were the family
fortune, which the owner must protect at all cost including laying down his own
life for the sheep.

If the shepherd were the son of the owner, he was in effect
guarding his future inheritance. If a sheep was lost, the son was required to
bring the body of the sheep back to his father to prove that he had been
vigilant in protecting the sheep.

A hireling, on the other hand, could not be relied upon to
protect the sheep because they did not represent the hireling’s inheritance.

As the Good Shepherd, Jesus cares for us in three ways:

First, he provides for all our needs such as food, water,
and shelter (but not necessarily for our wants). For example, there is more
than enough food and water and resources for shelter on this planet to provide
for all of the world’s peoples.

Second, Jesus protects us even to laying down his own life
for us and for our sins.

Third, Jesus disciplines us, keeps us moving in the right
direction, just as the shepherd uses his crook to nudge and guide the sheep.

In return for the Good Shepherd’s care, we have only two
obligations: to love the Lord our God, and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

We are in essence expected to take up the role of the Good
Shepherd in our own lives. As the writer of this morning's lesson from 1st John said:

“How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s
goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses to help?”

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

Amen.
