in an attempt to remove a stubborn seed from an avocado,I manage to stick a knife through the palm of my hand. A trip to emergency,and some surgery to repair the cut nerve left me with a quietly impressive scar, a slight tingling sensation along one side of my middle finger, and a healthy respect for big sharp blades. Naturally, I was the logical choice for the person in charge of the last minute carving of The Pumpkin.

Up until 5 o'clock this evening , the said Pumpkin had been sitting happily intact at our front doorstep. A quick walk  around the neighbourhood this afternoon, made it quite clear that we needed to do some serious work with a knife.

Not bad at all,for my first attempt at pumpkin carving.

I'm quite proud of his rather fierce expression.

I'm even prouder of the fact that no trip to the emergency room was required.

I'm thinking I could be shallow and frivolous and glamorous with That Bag.

(Profound is so overrated.)

a slightly resentful and reproachful looking owl...perhaps a little miffed at the idea of having only it's head displayed in a glass case.

This is a  pencil and watercolour sketch , from a photo I took at the Natural History Museum.

I found it to be a little sad and faintly disturbing. Actually the whole bird section was strangely attractive and somewhat repellent at the same time.

All of those birds, caught in flight, forever flying nowhere. Rows of heads, tails and wings .

The most amazing and tragic was the cabinet showing the  Victorian collection of hundreds of tiny hummingbirds.
