One of the great advantages of living in Costa Rica is not only is it ranked one of the Happiest Countries in the world it's s also one of the Healthiest! I heard that from Dr. Oz this week on CNN!

This Sunday at Unity Church from 1 - 3 p.m. There is a fabulous workshop for physical, mental and spiritual well being conducted by a friend of mine, Don Snedeker. Don has shared with me techniques and philosophies for our personal growth retreats here in Costa Rica and I have learned a great deal from him.

The 2 hour workshop is structured into 7 parts:

1. Introduction to the concept of holistic wellness and happiness as a state-of-being, cultivating body awareness, mind-body balance, inner peace, and natural intelligence

2. Warm-up exercises and centering activity – “relax the body, rest the ego, calm the mind, rejuvenate the spirit”

3. Breath/Energy work and flow which is Qigong and easy Tai-Chi – “meditation in movement”

4. Dynamic flow Vinyasa Hatha yoga – “real gain, without pain,” uniting body, mind, and spirit

5. Relaxation – “enjoy the stillness and the quiet”

6. Brief silent “one” meditation – sit and smile in the joy of being

Team Building Programs that Work: The PEP Best Practice

If as a Team or HRD Manager, you find yourself shaking your head and saying "Why can't they all just get along?" Your Team might just need to take the PEP Pilll. No fear-- we're not talking about a "Red Bull Power Drink" for teams, rather a simple but effective employee education program developed by the Now to WOW!TM Faculty which fosters inter-department understanding, communications and improved customer service performance.

"PEP" stands for Personal Exchange Program and is particularly suited for organizations that have multiple touch points with the customers and or the need for smooth transitions between sales and service operations. If you continually find yourself as a CEO or HRD manager brought into find common ground and solutions between departments and or have a need for your team to work together on core initiatives and projects, PEP may very well be your prescription and the pivot point for developing individual performers into a highly successful and synergistic team.

Here's briefly how the program works:

1) Each Department/Area nominates a PEP Ambassador and a PEP Traveler. Since nomination for either position is considered a reflection of high performance, the program serves a motivational purpose in addition to a cross training and quality tool.

2) A period of time (1 day - 1 week) is designated in the organization for the PEP program/campaign to minimize work disruption and insure energy and success of the exchange program.

3) PEP Ambassador's are required to plan and execute an agenda that will maximize understanding of their area by the PEP traveler from another area. The PEP program may also focus on a particular target initiative such as improving inter-department cooperation, reducing unnecessary bureaucracy or improving overall customer service.

4)PEP travelers are requirec to complete a journal that includes observations of what they learned in the exchange and recommendations for targeted improvements/inter-department cooperation. A master template for the journal and orientation is provided by Now to WOW! Faculty. Travelers are also required to deliver a presentation to their department on what they learned in the exchange.

5) Kick-Off and Orientation to PEP Ambassador's and Travelers is typically undertaken by the Team Leader in conjunction with HR to insure focus and attention to the program. Orientation includes an evaluation of Ambassadors and Travelers for program quality.

6) A wrap-up and debrief of the PEP program provides identified initiatives and a certificate provided to participants.

"You can touch the future you will never see."

It's a Saturday Morning in Costa Rica and while normally our ritual involves going to the Saturday market, today my husband and I had another mission. Retired school teacher and our web-master for many years, Dennis Oppelt from Canada was in Costa Rica for his annual vacation. Dennis has never had a daughter of his own and asked me to do some local inquiries and identify one student in need of scholarship support for her ongoing education that he would continue to support each year until her graduation.

I thought of the words of Corporate CEO and Philanthropist Gus Whalen when I heard him speak at the Atlanta Creativity Exchange. "You can touch the future you will not see through the gift of education. " Mr Whalen's philosophy is "we don't make a life by how much we earn, but how we live our lives and the community that we leave behind". As I watched CNN this morning the message resonated in the stories told about Senator Ted Kennedy. But philanthropy is not limited by how much you earn, but how much you care. Dennis is giving back to a country he has loved as a tourist by making a difference and funding Sandra Maria's education. He is making a difference. He is serving. I am so thrilled that September 11th is being proclaimed a day of service in the United States. Perhaps for just one day, a day that touches our heart and soul because of a tragic memory, we'll worry less about the economy and our own circumstances and more about how we can make life just a little easier for someone else.

Mr. Whalen in his education initiatives through Featherbone Communiversity underscores an important message. "Philanthropy should not be just for the selected few and privileged". It is the responsibility of each and everyone of us, regardless of income, to do what we can, when we can, with what we can.
