EXCITEMENT ABOUNDED THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS NORTHEASTERN PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND AS UNUSUALLY HOT TEMPERATURES WERE FELT ACROSS THE REGION. FOR THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS . . . HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORDS HAVE BEEN TIED OR BROKEN . . . BUT TODAYS TEMPERATURES SOARED BEYOND ANYTHING PREVIOUSLY SEEN IN THIS AREA.

IN VALDEZ . . . THE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORD OF 75 DEGREES SET IN 1997 WAS SHATTERED WHEN . . . AT 45 MINUTES AFTER 3 PM...THE MERCURY IN OUR THERMOMETER SHOT UP TO 90 DEGREES. AFTER A BRIEF DIP BACK INTO THE UPPER 80S . . . THE MERCURY AGAIN REGISTERED 90 DEGREES AT 15 MINUTES BEFORE 6 PM.

THIS ALSO CRUSHED THE ALL-TIME RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR ANY DAY OF THE YEAR . . . AND FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE . . . WHICH WAS 87 DEGREES AND WAS ACHIEVED TWICE . . . ON BOTH THE 25TH AND THE 26TH OF JUNE IN 1953. A LOCAL WEATHER SPOTTER IN TOWN RECORDED A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 87 DEGREES NEAR THE HOSPITAL DURING THE MID-AFTERNOON HOURS TODAY AS WELL. SUN-WORSHIPERS WERE OUT IN FORCE THROUGH THE MID TO LATE EVENING HOURS . . . AS THE TEMPERATURE AT 10 PM WAS STILL AN ASTOUNDING 77 DEGREES.

In a few days tingilinde will be a decade old. This marks the 12,000th post - something that seems better to mark than the ten year point.

It started out as an extension of the crandall surf report 2.0, which was an extension of the csr 1.0, which - in turn - was an extension of a mailing list that started a few months after the Mosaic browser was released. The notion was just a few words and perhaps a link about whatever seemed interesting. Probably half of the links come from friends and it formed something of a middenheap or perhaps an odd diary.

To date tingilinde has cost a bit over $1,000 in hosting and bandwidth costs (it is a bit over 17M page visits to date) and generates zero income although there have been a few books and music reviews where I note they have given me a book or piece of music to review. (If anyone wants to give me a Mac Pro after they are released at the end of the year, I'll be more than happy to review it ... the same goes for nice camera kit. A Sony RX1 would make for an interesting review:-)

Also recommended is The Great Animal Orchestra by Bernie Krause. I link to the iBook version which has higher quality audio than the Kindle flavor. Of course it should be listened to with good headphones or speakers rather the internal speakers to hear the detail. A downside is iBooks current doesn't work on laptops, although that supposedly chanages in a few months.

A small tsunami as seen at Woods Hole on Cape Cod on June 13th snip ... "We noticed this huge surge of water going out of the harbor almost like a riptide with waves building up at the entrance," Limberakis...

A small tsunami as seen at Woods Hole on Cape Cod on June 13th

snip

...

"We noticed this huge surge of water going out of the harbor almost like a riptide with waves building up at the entrance," Limberakis recalled. "Then it suddenly surged back into the harbor."

That back and forth surge of water continued for about an hour, Limberakis said, and then it was gone.

"It was the strangest thing I'd ever seen," he said. "I've been here since I was a kid, and I've never seen anything like it."

It was a tsunami, said U.S. Geological Survey oceanographer Jeff List, whose office is in Woods Hole. It just wasn't the earthquake- or landslide-generated surges people know and fear. This was a fairly rare meteotsunami, which originates with changes in atmospheric pressure.

Think of the intense low pressure in the center of a hurricane, which has a barometric pressure significantly lower than the air around it. The decreased downward force on the water allows water at the center of the storm to rise into a mound that is higher than the level of the surrounding ocean.

When a large front moves out over the sea, like one that moved offshore Thursday, there is a similar difference between the air pressure of the front and the air over the ocean. That drop in air pressure mounds up the water beneath it and, if the speed of the incoming weather system matches that of the deep water waves below, it can generate a tsunami, just like one generated by an earthquake or a landslide.

"Once it's released it's a tsunami," List said. "When it encounters a V-shaped bay on the coast, it can get amplified."

...

(tip of the hat to David)
