Cheryl Casone, Fox Business Network Anchor, hosted the Stevie Awards for Women in Business last night in New York. Cheryl, who was a Correspondent for Fox News Channel before joining Fox Business Network, has reported on economic turmoil, consumer fraud and government bailouts. Cheryl has this to say about the Women in Business Awards:

NewsonWomen.com won the Stevie Award for "Blog of the Year" last night at the Stevie Awards for Women in Business held in New York! It was a sellout crowd hosted by Fox Business Network Anchor Cheryl Casone. Cheryl tells us why she hosts the event: “The Women in Business Awards is my favorite event to emcee ever year. The women that I’ve met have been inspirational examples of what we can do when we believe in ourselves and have a purpose to our work. I will never forget the woman who went from living in her car to successful entrepreneur, or the Japanese hat company designer who only began making hats because her mother lost her hair from cancer and needed warmth. You don’t meet these types of women every day, and to share in the chance to honor them is the best part of the Stevie’s”.

Powerful women were on display in October09, including Nobel Prize winner Elinor Ostrom, the first woman in history to win a Nobel Prize for economics, as well as Elizabeth Blackburn and Carol Greider, awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in medicine. But that's not all that happened this month. Major companies appointing women to important positions in October included Starbucks, The Hartford, Leapfrog, BAE Systems, Kroger, Reader's Digest, Travelocity, Toro, Hasbro, Shiseido, Frito-Lay, Nike, Lionsgate, Nationwide, NASA, Ann Taylor Stores, Scripps Networks Interactive, Heidrick & Struggles, and KBR. Ernst & Young announced their Winning Women Entrepreneurs in October, all of whom operate in different industries which demonstrates the variety of talented women in the workforce. Rockefeller University's scientist, Dr. Elaine Fuchs, won another award this month, that's two months in a row for her! And let's not forget the Powerful Women in Banking list issued in October. BofA should check it out as they seek a new CEO!
Government appointments of women slowed a bit in October. I guess they've been busy. But I was glad to see a woman going to Treasury. And as I mentioned before, I would like to see the President's love of basketball be channeled into something great for women rather than the old boy headlines we were seeing in October. Do we have a President's Award for girls' high school and college teams that make a difference? It would be great if there were some kind of honor to recognize women in sports, giving them a chance to play on that White House basketball court!

Access to Capital has long been a bottleneck for women entrepreneurs, but this hasn't stopped them. Ernst & Young recently released a report titled "Scaling up: why women-owned businesses can recharge the global economy", pointing out that women entrepreneurs are critical drivers of economic growth. With limited access to capital however, women entrepereneurs often have to seek new ways to grow their companies. Springboard Enterprises, through its programs connecting women to investors, and Count Me In, through its Make Mine a Million $ Business program, are two organizations that help women entrepreneurs grow their companies and improve their access to capital.
Finding a solution to grow can be an aha! moment. Such was the case for Lindsay Napor and her company, Ecological, which specializes in sustainable construction. Alison Gregor of The New York Times tells Lindsay's story in her article, "A Cheap Nest For Fledgling Firms", about a business incubator in New York City that assists companies by providing cheap space in which the companies can operate. Lindsay heard about the cheap space at a Yankee game when an announcement said the City was looking for companies. In addition to cheap rents, local universities are involved so students get a chance to work at the companies, an added benefit for both the companies who get extra help and the students who get hands on experience.
