First a little tale:
Once upon a time fishermen would report seeing or hearing things that would startle them so that some would run their boats aground. Although they were not injured they would flee leaving their boats behind believing them to be haunted.

Then one day a fisherman caught something in his net he believed to be seaweed but as he pulled his net he could see it wasn't seaweed at all and was certain he heard a sound. With quick action he pulled out his knife and began cutting the netting in order to free whatever it was - as something told him this was no fish. His instincts as well as the stories he'd heard made him more curious than afraid as he frantically cut away.
When he had finally cut away the netting, nearly falling overboard in this attempt, whatever it was swam away. He called out "Do not be afraid, please come back!"
He waited and waited until it was nearly night fall and he had to get back to shore. All night he thought about what it could have been and vowed to go back out and call for it again the next day.
The next day he saw something in the distance........over near the rocks he could see somethig glistening but he was afraid to get to close so he got out his binoculars "what the heck?" he said aloud. "Who is that? What is that?"
He called out........."Do not be afraid, who are you?"
He heard a faint lilting voice say "I am The Sea Fairy".
He shifted is binoculars
She finally spoke to him........."Thank you for saving me from your net yesterday. I shall wear the remaining piece of net forever as a reminder of your kindness". I am part Mermaid and part Fairy, I am Fée d'océan. I love the warmth of the sun as much as the feel of the under sea waters. I make sure everyone and every thing is safe. So many before you have been frightened of me when I mean no harm to any living thing. My lips speak only of love. No one stopped to really listen until you. For this additional kindness I will be your compass..........your sea guide.....and your protector. I will watch for storms and danger and see that you find your way. You can watch for me in the distance, I keep my eyes closed at all times as I it is my way to feel the Universe........to meditate and to feel at one with sea and air. You will know by the mirror in my ear adornment if there is any danger or you have lost your way. Simply aim your sight on to that spot and you will be able to see what you need to see."
The Fisherman never spoke, he merely listened. He adjusted his binoculars one last time and could see she was, indeed, meditating toward the sun. He felt peaceful. He left her knowing he would always be safe because he had bothered to stop, look, listen and believe.
My The Sea Fairy art project begain with the head below...........the idea to use one of these was inspired by Pam Carriker but I knew I had to do it my way (although hers are amazing). I had seen her workshop talked about on Facebook and it really intrigued me. I am now officially hooked and will be starting another "head" in a few days with more to come as personalities visit me in the form of constant ideas. And for selling them as well.
She is truly a mixed media piece using many various mediums and a little "plastic surgery" or "tweaking" to her face. Her hair and the magenta leaf on her head are made from muslin. She kept me in blissful abandon during the entire process of trial and error. She is varnished thus the shine you see. She is mounted on a dowel adhered to a board. Her torso was done with pen and ink and paint. Her eyelids are mica flakes and glitter. SOOOO many components went in to bringing her to life I won't list them all. I cannot believe it's already May - I need to lift up my head once in a while. We've had days of summer here already, thankfully they are to go back to more Spring-like as I am not ready for hot weather. I don't mean to complain because some people are still getting snow....can you believe it?
