THE Canadian Philanthropist WILSON LAI is, undoubtedly, his country's "Ambassador of Goodwill" to the Philippines.

A few years back, Mr. Lai took a long look at the Philippines in one of his visits here. To be sure, the Philippines has been one of the "great countries" he's been enamored of, with its enticing beaches, many natural wonders, and its talented people. He finally decided it was time to call the Philippines his "home"--at least in Asia. He keeps another residence in Australia, where he returns during summer.

Mr. Lai found the the scenery and the ambiance in Barangay Pansol in Calamba, Laguna, much to his liking--and so decided to stay put there for good, or at least for a good number of months during the year. The hot springs rejuvenates his health so much, even as he gets ample "love" from the Pansol folks that he tirelessly helps every so often.

No wonder, the Pansol people accorded him the honor of being their "Ambassador of Goodwill."

How many sick Lagunenses over there he's helped with their medical needs, how many poor students he's given hope to, with his scholarship grants, how many jobless Filipinos he's given jobs to in Calamba--perhaps only God knows. The Calamba folks have lost count on the many people Mr. Lai, a retired Canadian bank executive, has helped, although the words of thanks for his big heart haven't stopped coming in.

More than his philanthropic work, this tireless humanitarian "world citizen," (for that, in effect, is what he has become through all these years of his incessant good deeds) has been nurturing a positive vision for the Philippines through all these years. Listen to his wisdom on how he and other people can help the Philippines and its "lovely people," as he calls us, Filipinos.
