Lucky for us, the pastels in <a href="http://www.renjeau.com/" target="_blank">Renjeau Gallery</a>'s new group show refer to what is actually one of the oldest painting mediums; pastels have been used by artists as far back as the 16th century. Consisting of pure, powdered pigments that are combined with a binder and rolled into a stick, they usually resemble a piece of chalk or crayon. Pastel paintings, if properly framed and cared for, can be one of the most permanent of media because they never darken, yellow or crack.<br /><br />Pastel paintings have great variations in tone and texture depending upon the binder used as well as the “ground” or the surface on which the pastel is applied. Dry pastels that are mixed with gypsum or other substances can have a soft, powdery texture that blends beautifully to produce stunning landscapes with soft gradations of tone. Wet pastels are usually mixed with oil and can produce intense color.<br /> <br />The current exhibition at <a href="http://www.bostondesignguide.com/guide/art-accessories-antiques/renjeau-galleries" target="_blank">Renjeau Galleries</a> features several pastel artists, each with their own style and technique. They include <a href="http://www.renjeau.com/artists/50.html" target="_blank">Will Klemm</a>, <a href="http://www.renjeau.com/artists/200.html" target="_blank">Aleah Koury</a>, <a href="http://www.renjeau.com/artists/196.html" target="_blank">Karen Jones</a>, <a href="http://www.renjeau.com/artists/45.html" target="_blank">Pierre Jacquelin</a>, <a href="http://www.renjeau.com/artists/30.html" target="_blank">Nicora Gangi</a>, <a href="http://www.renjeau.com/artists/185.html" target="_blank">Francoise Julien</a>, and Nicole Clement. Renjeau has been showing the work of these artists for many years, but for the first time, they are displaying their newest paintings all together during the month of March in their Natick Exhibition Annex.<br /> <br /><a href="http://www.renjeau.com/exhibit/exhibit27.html" title="Purely Pastel - March exhibit at Renjeau Galleries">Click here to see a preview of the show</a> – there are more pieces available by each of these artists, so please stop by the gallery to see the outstanding pieces if you have the chance.</p><div style="text-align: center;"><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb883401310f812160970c-popup" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Pierre Jacquelin pastel painting at Renjeau Galleries: Yellow Roses &amp; Porcelain 7x14" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e553a845cb883401310f812160970c " src="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb883401310f812160970c-800wi" title="Pierre Jacquelin pastel painting at Renjeau Galleries: Yellow Roses &amp; Porcelain 7x14" /></a></p><p style="text-align: center;"><strong><a href="http://www.renjeau.com/" target="_blank">Renjeau Galleries</a><br />79 Worcester Road<br />Natick, MA 01760<br />(508) 655-5121</strong></p> </div><p> </p></div>

The site includes detailed project descriptions, updated firm information and a streamlined appearance that will accommodate a steady stream of new content throughout the year.</p>
“This is an important piece of our continual commitment to past, prospective and future clients,” said Peter Polhemus, a founder and partner of the 14-year-old firm that offers clients a single source for a complete range of architectural, <a href="http://www.bostondesignguide.com/guide/interior-design" target="_blank">interior design</a> and construction services – provided by more than 35 professionals including licensed <a href="http://www.bostondesignguide.com/guide/architects-boston" target="_blank">architects</a>, LEED-accredited specialists, designers, construction supervisors, cabinet makers and field personnel.<br /><p>“As we begin 2010, our company will continue to build off of our strong foundation providing clients with great value without ever compromising custom quality,” said COO Aaron Polhemus. “Our new website allows us to share our work far more robustly with all our clients and visitors everywhere at any time.”

Well, maybe it’s not “Finally”—maybe that was actually your first thought!</p>
<p>It often happens that I’m called to help with a color palette when “the painters are coming next week!”<br />
While crisis-mode color selection is not optimal, it’s certainly
possible to do. But your color choices deserve your best attention
since it’s color that sets the tone for your entire space.</p>
<p>If you have time to give your color selections adequate
consideration, it will be to your advantage. Even if you intend to use
the services of a color consultant it will be helpful to your final
decision-making to really be aware of your space in some ways you might
not have considered before.</p><p><strong>1. Where to start?</strong><em><br />
</em></p>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: left;">Dream in color, starting in a smaller space such as a Bathroom, Hallway, or Accent Wall.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Begin where you are most comfortable.
Select a favorite color, drawn from artwork, rug, china, accessory or
furniture, as main color or accent.<br /><a href="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a275a970c-popup" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="float: left;"><img alt="Color design and photo by Barbara Jacobs" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a275a970c " src="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a275a970c-320wi" style="margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px; width: 240px; height: 183px;" title="Color design and photo by Barbara Jacobs" /></a> In the image to the left (color design and photo by Barbara Jacobs) the wall color relates to the bright green design lines in LOOPY/Soft Tide: <a href="http://www.silkroadweaves.com" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.silkroadweaves.com');" title="LOOPY/Soft Tide">Silk Road Weaves – Tibetan Rugs
</a></li>
</ul>

<p><strong>2.  Think mood, listen to the space</strong><a href="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c34a95970b-popup" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="float: right;"><img alt="Image courtesy of Eileen Kennon" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c34a95970b " src="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c34a95970b-320wi" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px; width: 239px; height: 179px;" title="Image courtesy of Eileen Kennon" /></a><br /> Choose your color according to the purpose of the space, for example:</p>

<li> Bedroom:  restful, soothing, dramatic or intimate</li>
<li> Dining area: sociable, stimulating</li>
<li> Library/study: quiet, peaceful concentration<br /> </li>
<strong><br />3.  How about a complement?</strong><br />Check out a color wheel, and enhance your main color choice with contrast<br /><a href="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c34c68970b-popup" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Image courtesy Ellen Kennon" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c34c68970b " src="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c34c68970b-320wi" style="width: 186px; height: 249px;" title="Image courtesy Ellen Kennon" /></a> <br /><p><strong>4.  Monochromatic, maybe?  Emphasize the architecture</strong><a href="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a2e03970c-popup" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="float: right;"><img alt="Image courtesy Ellen Kennon" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a2e03970c " src="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a2e03970c-320wi" style="margin: 0pt 0pt 5px 5px; width: 267px; height: 356px;" title="Image courtesy Ellen Kennon" /></a></p>
<ul>
<li> Achieve bold or subtle variations within one color group.</li>
<li>Use low-contrast color variations in any room.</li>
<li> Contrast use of paint finishes to make an elegant statement.
<br />For example: use closely related colors, or even a single color in
different finishes, for walls and trim—and maybe even the ceiling.  <a href="http://hueconsulting.blogspot.com/2009/12/new-trim-trend.html" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/hueconsulting.blogspot.com/2009/12/new-trim-trend.html');" title="Hue Consulting">HUE consulting has some interesting trend notes about this.</a><br /> <strong><br />5.  Make white the accent color</strong><br />
Even in a guest bathroom  you can create variety with elegant neutrals as the main color. (Color design and photo below by Barbara Jacobs)<br /><a href="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c350f1970b-popup" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Color design and photo by Barbara Jacobs" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c350f1970b " src="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c350f1970b-320wi" style="width: 238px; height: 358px;" title="Color design and photo by Barbara Jacobs" /></a> <strong><br /><br />6.  Looking up, tint your ceiling! <a href="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a4da4970c-popup" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="float: right;"><img alt="Image courtesy of Eileen Kennon" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a4da4970c " src="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a4da4970c-200wi" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px; width: 200px;" title="Image courtesy of Eileen Kennon" /></a> </strong></li>
<li>
Add drama with a stronger color, a similar-tone color in a different hue, or</li>
<li>Make the ceiling the same color as the walls, for the feeling of a more expansive space.<br /> <br /> <strong>7.  Testing 1…2…3…Try Something Different</strong><em /></li>
<li><p>Consider strong colors or soft, deep earthy hues like chocolate brown or olive green as main or accent colors.</p>
</li>
<li>Be sure to test colors by rolling 2 coats on primed poster board or large areas of actual wall.<br /><a href="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c354d6970b-popup" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Color Design and photo by Barbara Jacobs" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c354d6970b " src="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c354d6970b-200wi" style="width: 200px;" title="Color Design and photo by Barbara Jacobs" /></a> <a href="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a35bf970c-popup" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Color Design and photo by Barbara Jacobs; Another idea with a little drama: Silk Road Plum in the kitchen, and note the accent color “Jaunty Jen” that makes a visual connection to the adjacent office" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a35bf970c " src="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb883401310f2a35bf970c-200wi" style="width: 200px;" title="Color Design and photo by Barbara Jacobs; Another idea with a little drama: Silk Road Plum in the kitchen, and note the accent color “Jaunty Jen” that makes a visual connection to the adjacent office" /></a> <br /><strong><br />8.  What’s missing? Add interest and depth of color</strong><a href="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c35670970b-popup" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="float: right;"><img alt="Venetian Plaster and photo by Barbara Jacobs" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c35670970b " src="http://www.bostondesignblog.com/.a/6a00e553a845cb88340120a8c35670970b-200wi" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px; width: 200px;" title="Venetian Plaster and photo by Barbara Jacobs" /></a>
</li>
<li> Flat, dull walls become interesting and personal with subtle or dramatic  ”Visual Texture” and “Broken Color.”</li>
<li>“DEPTH” does not have to mean “DARK!”</li>
<li>Burnished mineral/metal finishes and colored glazes add depth and interest.</li>
<li> For example: Mica, Copper, Pewter, Bronze, and of course Silver and Gold</li>
<li>Accent areas are the perfect place for a special finish to create focus in a space. <br /><strong><br />9.  Still wondering?</strong><br /><p><em>
</em>Review your comfort zone and expand it, taking note of your response to your favorite colors.</p>
<p><strong>10.  To avoid confusion</strong><em><br />
</em>Try to keep others’ opinions to a minimum. REMEMBER, It’s YOUR home!</p>
<p><strong>11. Bonus Tip<br />

How is similar to painting? How is it different?</span></div><p style="text-align: left;">Our process is somewhat similar to painting in that there is prep work involved, then the installation of a topcoat. However, our process is definitely more involved than the typical paint project. We start out with a pressure wash to make sure the house is clean. Then, we scrape and sand until the surface is sufficiently prepped for our coatings. We also caulk and seal around all doors and windows, and in all necessary cracks and crevices. At this point we apply a full coat of our bonding agent, a primer-like coat specifically designed for our coating system. Finally, Smart Color is applied 10x thicker than paint. The end result is a house that looks freshly painted, and will remain that way for many years to come. It looks like paint but is completely maintenance-free.</p><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #c00000;">2) What are the major differences between regular house paint and Smartcolor?</span>
</div></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">The major difference between Smart Color and regular house paint, from a customers point of view is that we offer a lifetime warranty on this product. It is guaranteed not to crack, peel, blister or fade for as long as that customer lives in his/her home. The warranty is even transferable to subsequent owners if the house is sold. What makes it last are 3 main components – it is much thicker than standard house paint, much more flexible than standard paint – which allows it to move as your house expands and contracts – and it is much more breathable than regular paint.</p><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #c00000;">3) Tell me about the typical Smartcolor customer. Why do they choose Smartcolor?</span></div><p style="text-align: left;">A typical Lifetyme Exteriors customer is a homeowner who is tired of re-painting his/her house every 4 to 5 years. This customer sees the value in a product like ours – when spending more money up-front to purchase a higher quality item that will save them hassle and money in the long run. And – it keeps your house looking good all the time – whereas with your average painting cycle of 4 or 5 years, a good portion of that time is spent with cracks, chips, peeling spots, exposed wood and rotting areas in plain sight.</p><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #c00000;">4) What are the best reasons for going w/ Smartcolor, especially in New England?</span></div><p style="text-align: left;">The reasons for going with Smart Color are many – it will protect your home better than paint or vinyl siding. It will look great for years to come. Our guarantee is that you will never have to paint again. It comes in any color, or combination of colors so you are guaranteed to love the finished product. It will save you the headache of dealing with a painting contractor every 4 or 5 years, and will SAVE YOU MONEY. While the initial investment is typically 2.5 times the cost of a paint job, this product pays for itself quickly and starts earning you money. Lifetyme Exteriors SmartColor is a home improvement, not a sunken maintenance cost like standard house paint. When was the last time you earned any money mowing your lawn? You are guaranteed to keep painting your house every 4 to 5 years if this is the path that is chosen time and time again. Lifetyme Smart Color allows customers to break this never ending cycle and save money while doing so.</p><div style="text-align: center;"><strong>Lifetyme Exteriors</strong><br /><strong>(866) 659-6099</strong><br /><strong><a href="http://www.lifetymene.com/index.html" target="_blank">www.lifetymene.com</a></strong><br /></div><p style="text-align: left;" /><div style="text-align: left;"> </div></div>
