Saturday: Showers. High near 44. Breezy, with a south wind between 21 and 28 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Beach Drive octopuses taking a beating lately...

Today marks the fourth cephalopod fatality I've witnessed in a year. I find it pretty odd given I haven't even seen a sign of one for the previous 5 years we've lived here.

The latest victim was found today as we were walking along Emma Schmitz Memorial View Point

When searching the web for the arch enemy of the Puget Sound octopus, I found this revealing clip of a wrestling match between a seal vs octopus

Off the shores of Emma Schmitz View Point, you may have witnessed a hollabalou of spectating seagulls diving over forceful splashes in the sound. We watched for a while in the park and decided to trek back to our house to try to capture some photos.

Through telescope, you could see that a sea lion decided to have a late afternoon snack of squid. It was amazing and I wish our photos did more justice.

Every now and then we run into people that remember a great little restaurant located just down the street on Beach Drive and Jacobsen. I've always wondered what the house looked like back in it's "eatery" days but haven't been able to locate any photos... until now! These pics were recently scanned by the Seattle Municipal Archives Photograph Collection from a folder containing an appealed variance application back in 1961.

If you'd like to learn a little more history about this quaint 12 table restaurant, West Seattle Blog posted a fabulous article along with reader's memories of the restaurant's owner/chef that had recently passed away. I also hear that Quesnel's is mentioned in the book Memories of Southwest Businesses that can be found at the Log House Museum off of Alki.

My next quest for photos is to get some choice shots of Sans Souci, the old Schmitz mansion that used to adourn what is now Mee-Kwa-Mooks. If you have any leads on photos, please share!

Vandals strike cars parked on Beach Drive

Some Beach Drive neighbors were contacted by the Seattle Police after 2 am this morning to learn their cars were damaged by punks. Windows were broken on the west side of the street and some of the cars may have items stolen. There are at least four cars that I'm aware of south of Jacobson on Beach Drive.

UPDATE 1:42 PM: We've learned that about 3 - 4 other cars were damaged further south on Beach Drive around the 6000 block.

Wednesday: Showers. High near 47. South southwest wind 8 to 11 mph increasing to between 17 and 20 mph. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Tides are heading down from a high tidee of 10.6 at 5:01 tonight to a -0.7 at 11:36 tonight and back up to a 12.5 at 6:38 Wednesday morning.

Another wind storm coming Sunday

Weather forecast can and do change. At 4:30 this morning, we issued a "barking dog" report which basically means that we're preparing to possibly flood or lose power because of high winds, tides and waves slurping over the bulkhead. A "barking dog" would be like your neighbors friendly retreiver who howls when he thinks something may be wrong - sometimes he's right, sometimes not...but always on the lookout with best intentions.

We indeed have water coming over our bulkhead and thankfully have a back-up pump since the first one failed.

This photo is of our neighbors patio where the waves knocked some of the brick pavers out.

Our next high tides are an 11.3 at 2:25 this afternoon and a 12.3 at 5:08 Sunday morning followed by a 11.2 at 3:20 pm Sunday afternoon.

Here's what the NWS has now:

BARKING DOG REPORT: WIND AND WAVES

It's been a while since we've issued a barking dog report - I'll explain more later. Right now we're dealing with extreme wind at high tide causing water to slosh over the bulkhead. This is the type of situation where neighbors may experience flooding - especially if we lose power. The following is what info we have as of 4:00 am (at the time of publishing this post):

This morning the snow is melting and Beach Drive around Jacobson seems clear, wet and slushy.
