Posted by Abdul, studying Economics @ LSE

Hi there Bellerbys friends,

It's been a while now. Over the past few weeks we've been bombarded with work after work and finally after getting a breath fresh air... I'm BACK! Now I spent a few days thinking of what to blog about and I thought Oh! What's the one thing in London that isn't trying to kill me... Passfield! My accommodation/halls/whatever you want to call it.

We all know how we hear stories of university being the best time of your life, but as far as I'm concerned having the "good life" is up to you. The one thing that is of utter importance to enjoy university is organisation, without it you are more or less doomed. Having course works, essays, problem sets, exercise sets every week you have to find the time to fit them in, but even more important is whether you're having a good time and that's where your halls come in.

To be honest I didn't apply for Passfield Hall and I was angry at the school for just chucking me into a twin room after specifying that I wanted a single (something which still baffles me till today) but surprisingly I wouldn't have had it any other way. In total we're about 230 undergrads. We get served dinner, there's a pool and foosball table, a PS3 and best of all, the 230 people that live in the halls.

The residence is fantastic. To put simply, they know how to "Play hard and Work hard", the new LSE motto that I've live by. It took me a while to settle in cause I felt everyone was too "free" and I'm more of a conserved person but once you're able to go out your comfort zone then you kind of feel at home (although my friend says that I get that feeling cause we have a garden/barbecue area). If only someone didn't trip off the fire alarms at 3am, then it would have been the perfect place.

The hall organises weekend trips to the opera, paintballing or just a night in watching movies or playing games. At this point I almost glad I didn't get sent to a single room in another hall cause I'll probably be locked in my room day-in day-out. We recently also had a hall committee elections, which was slightly intense (although I didn't run for anything) but it's just one of the many ways you get encouraged to make a difference and be part of something.

They're even more amazing people around the school (from magicians to math geniuses, you name them) and it doesn't get you down or make you feel as if you are less able, rather you get this drive that makes want to take on new things and explore new places. I guess that's what university should feel like and London only makes these aspirations possible.

Sorry to cut this short but I guess I'll be back again with more news from the London School of Entertainment... lol.

Abdul studied A Levels at Bellerbys College and achieved one A* grade and three A grades.

As the title of the blog is 'Life After Bellerbys' I'll start with what I've been up to after Bellerbys.

After nearly going into shock (to say the least) on results day (Abdul achieved grades of A*AAA!), I successfully made it into me first choice, with many thanks of course to Bellerbys and it's wonderful teachers. However I think everyone would agree with me that after such a stressful period, it should be followed with fun (lots of it), and so that's what I did.

I decide to have a holiday trip to the US which started in New Jersey with my delectable cousins (pictured right) who are surprisingly fun to be with, although I believe it's probably because they're still fairly innocent.

But as much as I would have loved to spend all my holiday with them, they were more interesting places to visit. So I continued my partial tour of the US stopping first in Atlantic City, famous for it's numerous casinos but not as much as Vegas. However thay have something else in common which is eating away your money without hesitation.

Even the lively night life of Atlantic City didn't hold me back from going on to my final destination, DC. It may be worth saying that If you're not the sight seeing type Washington
DC would probably not be the place for you, but all in all it's not such a bad place.

It's monuments and memorials start to seem boring when you've seen about 10 and realise that there's still more but one of my favourites is the new Malcom X memorial.

You'd have thought the fun ended there (given that I came back to school) but WOW University students do not take Fresher's week lightly. I guess it because it's the only week where excessive drinking doesn't have the consequence of 'HANGOVER+LECTURE'.

I must admit it is a really fun week knowing that you'll probably never get the chance to have so much fun once school starts. It is also worth mentioning that they are other things to do during the first week and they do take you round London to get familiar with the surrounding and you also get tour of the school. Which I must say is necessary as the school is more or less like maze you have to get through everyday.

To the right is our beautiful library which I just feel like bragging about and below is the New Academic Building which unfortunately I have no lectures or classes at.

And so that's it, phase 1 of my life after leaving Bellerbys.

Abdul is 18 and studied A Levels at Bellerbys College Brighton, achieving grades of A*AAA, which secured his place to read Economics at London School of Economics, no less.

His Maths teacher at Bellerbys College, Dr Fisher, had this to say of Abdul: "Abdulbasit won the prize as the Best Student in Economics this year and has shown himself to be an enthusiastic and dedicated student who is always cheerful. He worked very effectively as a Student Council member and deserves his success. He should do very well at the LSE and I wish him all the best in his future studies. He is an Economist in the making!"

And Abdul himself says that he wouldn't be where he is today without the college: "Bellerbys has helped to strengthen my academic background and motivates me to push beyond my limits, both in and out of class.

I wouldn't be where I am today without Bellerbys. To put it simply I have been set on a journey and I know that I am well prepared to face any challenges ahead and I cannot thank the school enough for that."

Outside of the classroom, Abdul enjoys playing pool, rowing, watching movies and hanging out with his friends.

Good luck in your first year at LSE, Abdul. We look forward to hearing all about it.

So the day finally came - I packed up my suitcase (yes, I only had one, because of the plane allowance), woke up at 4 am, went to the airport and took off, on my way to Oxford. It took me about 6 hours from the Prague airport to the Porter’s Lodge of St Hilda’s College.

From the very first moment everyone was really friendly and talkative, so the initial worries about not being able to talk to anyone and about finding it hard to make friends were gone very soon. Not very many people had arrived on the Sunday like me, but after we had unpacked and settled in our rooms, we went to eat ice cream in a local gorgeous coffee shop, then we had an informal Freshers’ dinner with some of the second years, and the whole day went by very quickly.

On Monday the rest of the people arrived, a whole lot of new faces on the college grounds and in the corridors. The University had prepared an orientation programme for international students, so that is what I attended from the early morning until early afternoon - it was an event packed with information about life in Oxford in general. The rest of the time that day we were going around meeting various people - it’s a shame that it is literally impossible to remember everyone’s names!

The highlight of the day was probably a musical performance in our on-site music building, where the most talented music bands of the University were singing - including Out of the Blue (whom you might know from the latest Britain’s Got Talent show!!) who were simply amazing! A big clubbing night was taking place on Monday (and on most of the other nights of the week), but I did not go to any of them as I was feeling quite overwhelmed and tired by everything.

For those of you, however, who really like clubbing, don’t listen to the people who mock Oxford by saying that our Freshers’ week consists of playing chess and drinking tea - that simply is not true (although if you would enjoy that, you can surely find others here who would, too ;-))!

After having registered with the university, the college, the doctors and having listened to various talks on Tuesday, we had a more or less free day, which then therefore included a lot of shopping a lot of chatting and meeting new people. In the evening I went for a walk around Oxford with some of my international friends, and then we stayed in one of the rooms in College and were talking and simply had fun!

Wednesday was our very first formal dinner - we had to wear academic gowns to meet with our tutors, and then we spent the whole evening in the dining hall, talking to them about various things. Although I was worried that the dinner would be awkward, it was a really nice way of getting to know our tutors, whom we will be seeing very often now. Also, the food served was absolutely delicious!

One of the great events of the Freshers’ week was the Freshers’ Fair that we had on Thursday - there were about 400 different university-wide societies/commercial companies all very keen to get our e-mail addresses and give us a lot of free stuff in exchange. I signed up for a huge amount of societies, because it was so hard to refuse once their representatives started talking to me! We also had a college Fresher’s Fair on Saturday, where, in turn, all the college societies were represented and where we got very beautiful free mugs with our college’s name on them!

On Thursday we also met our tutors for the first time and we already got assigned relatively huge amounts of reading and problem sheet solving, so it seemed like the Freshers’ week was over. However, most people still found time to go clubbing on that night and to go to a college family dinner on Friday.

To explain a little bit about this, in Oxford, normally two second year students from a college get “married” and get assigned two or so Freshers, who then become their college children. Our college parents are then our first point of contact for any issues we might have. To get to know them a little better, we each had our Friday dinner in our college parents’ house, which was really great fun!

The Freshers’ week (or the 0th week as we sometimes call it) officially ended with the Saturday evening’s bop. You probably do not know what such a bop is - but in short it is a themed dress up party that happens every two/three weeks in Oxford colleges. Our bop theme was “dress up as your subject”.

Many people wore really beautiful fancy costumes that took them a very long time to make and that really did impress everyone. I, for PPE, had a t-shirt with a question mark (for Philosophy, as it includes asking a lot of questions), an exclamation mark (for Politics, as politicians like to dictate to others) and a dollarmark (for Economics, for obvious reasons). The bop was a very fun event and it was a perfect way of ending the busiest week of our lives, the Freshers’ week!

Hi everyone!

As I promised, I'm writing to tell you about what I have been doing throughout the summer! Hope you are going to enjoy reading this - feel free to comment and to suggest what you'd like to read next!

For us A2 students the Summer Term finished relatively late - we had exams until the end of June and we were extremely jealous of our AS and Foundation friends, who had gone back home to relax by mid-June! However, the end of exams came eventually (it is impossible to describe how great it felt when me and my friends were leaving the exam hall after our last Economics exam) and the summer began! For me it was really difficult to say goodbye to Brighton - after all, it had been my home for nearly two years and I've grown very attached to it. I must admit that as my friends were seeing me off at the train station, I actually cried. Luckily, it only took a very short time for me to get back to Prague, and once I was at home, I felt very happy and almost forgot about how sad I was when leaving Brighton.

Once at home, I spent the first few days just resting - during the exam period I had a significant sleep deficit, so I needed to catch up! We went to see my grandparents at their country house in Moravia, where we had a very nice time - my brother was helping out in the garden while I was mostly reading and enjoying the feeling of being able to read books other than coursebooks for a while! It was amazing to be able to catch up with my family!

Having spent most of July in Prague, I was very excited when we went to Croatia - me, my brother and our parents. Apart from the car journey (which took 12 hours and was simply exhausting) I had an awesome time. Swimming in the sea, eating Croatian food (which is, by the way, extremely delicious - I can never have enough of it) and in general just relaxing was very nice and comforting.

I really like Croatian nature, although you have to be an early bird to be able to see some of it on the mainland - from 9 am the coast starts to be packed with tourists and it's not very beautiful at all. One day I took the time to wake up early (and by early I mean 5:30 am) and I saw the very beautiful sunrise, and I also went to take a few pictures of the coast. Here is a little example of what it looked like:-)

It was a harsh return back to reality in the middle of August. When I came back from Croatia, it was only 3 days until the very dreaded A Level results day. I couldn't sleep very well the night before, I was waking up every hour or so and checking the time, hoping that it would be 7 am already and I could check the results and UCAS Track to see if I had got into university. It was really a very stressful time, especially as UCAS created a very unpleasant surprise for me when I logged in - my insurance university turned into unconditional, but there was no sign of change at Oxford University's decision. I thought that that was it - I didn't get in.

Luckily, in an hour or so after I checked Track, I got an email from Bellerbys with my results, and once I had them, I was so happy that I met the conditions that I did not worry about Track anymore! I went to tell my parents and my friends and I was just so happy that it's difficult for me to find words to describe this. It really is a very nice feeling to know that you have accomplished something you had worked so hard for.

Right now I am still very excited about going to Oxford University in October, although I am kept busy by the reading list that I was sent by my subject tutors. I have to read several books for each of Philosophy, Politics and Economics, so I am in a bit of a rush to try to finish them all by the time I go to Oxford! Cross fingers for me!

Other than reading, I also started going to a driving school here - it is kind of fun to learn to drive, but it also is difficult at times when you realise the huge responsibility you have when driving a car. I've also been preparing for the driving theory tests, which is a nice way of getting my brain back into the studying mindset which I had lost completely over the summer.

This is it then for today. I hope you are all enjoying the rest of the holidays (or the first days of school for some of you)!

I will come back very soon and talk about all the preparations I had been doing for university - again, if you'd be interested in anything specific, let me know!

Till then!

My name is Zuzana Chlupackova, I'm 18 and I come from a relatively small country in Central Europe, the Czech Republic. I was postponing my first blog post until now, because until the A Level results day I was not sure which university I would go to. But now I can finally say that from October I will be reading PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) at Oxford University, and I am very excited about this!

As this is my first post ever, I was thinking to introduce myself and, most importantly, talk about the time I have spent in the UK so far, so if you feel this could be of any interest to you, read on :-).

I was born in Vyskov, which is a small city in the Czech Republic and I lived in a tiny village called Olsany for the first year of my life (people are often surprised by this, since they say I am such a city type :-)). My family moved to Prague soon after and that's where I lived for the most part of my life.

The Czech educational system is different to the English one, so you might find it rather confusing that after the 5th grade at school I went to a selective gymnasium (an equivalent of grammar school), where I spent further five years before leaving to study in Bellerbys College Brighton in September 2009.

Before I first came to the UK, I was worried about pretty much everything - will I be able to cope with studies in English? will I make friends in an environment where I won't know anyone at first? How am I going to survive without my parents being far away? Well, if you are anything like I was, worry no more.

I'm not going to lie to you, I was homesick at the beginning, but within a few weeks I settled in very well. I didn't have to worry about not understanding English because the teachers spoke very clearly and were always willing to help. I made friends very quickly with people all over the world. And since I had internet in my lovely host family, I could contact my family on a daily basis, so sometimes, I didn't even have time to start feeling homesick. And besides, any worries I had, I could always either come to any of the teachers, or the lovely Mrs Chris Arulraj who was always there for us (thank you Mrs Chris!).

Although it really was my dream to get into Oxford University, I felt it was pretty much impossible at first (well I still feel it's a little impossible, since it still didn't quite sink in). But Bellerbys has showed me that with determination, hard work, and support from all the friendly teachers, everything was possible.

Here I must thank Mr Corcut for holding the Oxbridge meetings throughout the first four terms of my course, because they really were very useful in terms of preparation for the dreaded interviews. Thanks to these meetings the interviews went much better for me than I would have thought (If you'd like to know more about the interviews procedure, just let me know below in the comments, I could make a post about these). They were not easy, but they were not as daunting as I thought initially.

It did take a lot of hard work throughout the two years that I spent at Bellerbys. But do not be mistaken! I also had huge amounts of fun meeting various people, hanging out with friends (even studying with friends in our favourite Costa Coffee was fun!), singing in the college singing society, helping to manage various fun events for the college (the Carnival, the May Ball, etc.) in the Student Council, and so on.

Life of a student at Bellerbys is not just about studying (although this is massively important, of course) it is a lot more, and in all honesty, I think that all my friends at Bellerbys have enjoyed their courses just as much as I have (that is to say a LOT!).

So yes, this was a very brief summary of my life at Bellerbys Brighton. In the next post I will talk about my holidays (which are rather long - more than 3 months in total!) and about the preparation for university that I am faced with these days. If there is anything specific you would be interested in, I am more than happy to talk about it, so, please, let me know.

Thanks a lot for reading my first blog post!

I will be back soon!

Zuzana (pictured left, at the Parisian-themed 2011 Brighton May Ball) is 18 and has been studying A Levels in History, Politics, Economics, Maths and French at Bellerbys College Brighton. She will be studying PPE (Philosophy, Politics & Economics) at university from October and has offers from Oxford University and Warwick University. Wow.

Zuzana was the recipient of an impressive two awards at the recent Brighton A Level Awards ceremony - Best A2 Modern Languages Student and Best A2 Student in the Humanities Faculty. When not achieving great things in the classroom you can find her playing volleyball, reading, singing and learning languages.

Welcome Zuzana! We look forward to hearing all about your first year at university in the UK.

April. May. The months just went past at a ridiculous pace. Assignments were showered on us and the final project was well on its way. Through nights and nights of sleeplessness, I was finally done with first year.

The inaugural year of the road towards obtaining my degree has come to an end, the year where everything is new and where everyone is more experienced than you.

More will be expected in the following year and then the final year. The journey towards graduation seemed not that long after all and as much as it has scared the world out of me on what to expect upon receiving my welcome letter and booklist at the start of last year, university was not as impossible as I had once thought. It is, as most students quote, the best phase of your life.

My first year in the University of Sheffield coming to a close also means the end of my time here as a Bellerbys alumni blogger. It has been quite an experience initially assuming the role of a student blogger on behalf of Bellerbys Brighton, then onto the Life After Bellerbys blog.

More than a year and a half have passed since I first took on this opportunity and I must say that I have always enjoyed penning glimpses of my experiences as an international student in the UK, both in college as well as university.

To start a whole new life in the UK is rather challenging if not for all the guidance given by Bellerbys. I hope that my blog has successfully acted as another form of media to reach out to similar students in need of similar guidance.

It is rather encouraging to see a good number of people contacting me through emails, Facebook and Twitter for advices on various issues concerning different phases throughout college and university life. Having direct contact with these readers gave me such a sense of gratification, knowing that my effort has actually not been wasted.

Doing this for quite a long time now has made it seem almost second nature to me, thus the reason why I will dearly miss this routine. I would love to continue sharing my experience until I graduate from my course, though I believe that it is only right to spare this wonderful opportunity to a successor, a new student who may have even more to share or a more interesting insight of tertiary education.

I thank Bellerbys College for giving this platform to speak to prospective students and simply for prompting me to record my own university experiences here, building something I could always look back and be proud of.

I would have to acknowledge Miss Louise Courtney, for being patient with my entries, proofreading and uploading them in very timely fashion. You have always given me words of encouragement, keeping up my enthusiasm to write even more entries.

And lastly, I thank you readers for allowing me to help you and for the occasional comments on my blog. It has been quite a ride and I wish everyone all the best in their future endeavours.

My email is davidkam09 at gmail.com and I am still more than happy to assist you in any way.

For the last time,
I’m signing off!
Thank you!
Have a great summer!

David

Congratulations! You have been nominated to run for MASSOC’s presidential post.” (As mentioned in my earlier posts, MASSOC is the University of Sheffield’s Malaysian and Singaporean Society). The text message blinked on my phone. Slightly dumbfounded from the hours of immersing myself into the pile of Architecture’s workload, I had to read the text message repeatedly for the notification to sink in.

I would be lying if I say that presiding a society has never come across my mind during my time in the university. What I never thought would happen was the fact that the opportunity has come so soon! Bogged down with the seemingly bottomless pile of academic work as well as my current secretarial involvement in the departmental society, not to forget all the dance competitions and performances, I thought it was rather impossible to spearhead a society alongside my other commitments.

People around me have been giving me so much advice; both encouragements and discouragements. Of all the people, I should also be clear of what I would be getting myself into, based on my involvements in high school. It can be extremely stressful at times, but mostly very rewarding as well.

Not just that, out of hundreds of societies established in the Student Union, why preside my national society when I could have attempted to preside the Dance Society or the Architecture Society?

Involving myself in a general society such as the Dance Society and the Architecture Society certainly has given me the opportunity to work with students from different cultural backgrounds and countries, whilst it only seemed like I would just be in my comfort zone, dealing with people of a similar background as me. With that said, I cannot forget that it should be my pride to lift the name of Malaysia and Singapore in the UK, promoting our cultural identity and caring for the welfare of our fellows Malaysians and Singaporeans.

I pondered about running for this presidency for quite a while, and literally decided on the night before the Annual General Meeting. Well, ‘I shall leave it to fate’ is my master plan. I was thinking of delivering a speech just out of spontaneity, prompting my sincerest feelings towards the society and the prospect upon my presidency. Whether or not the members of the society agrees to my vision, it would be for them to decide. I went in with no expectations at all but a simple gesture to show that I would be willing to contribute to the society.

Little did I know, in a split second, all the candidates were lined up against each other, waiting anxiously for the results to be announced. The short moment of awkward silence, prompted by the host to invoke suspense amongst the crowd (as always), seemed just lengthy.

And all of the sudden, I heard ‘David Kam’. To be honest, the next few minutes were the normal congratulatory gesture, with me giving me a short speech of appreciation and hugging everyone I know there.

Right, glory time over. It was the time where reality really sunk in with the fact that I am now responsible for the welfare of hundreds of people in the university. Not really a nice fact to know, but I shall not succumb to the pressure.

I am simply glad that I have not allowed my academic studies to restrict my interests. I just made a decision to expose myself to knowing more people, learning more things, and above all that, spice up my CV. Talk about killing two birds in one stone!

By now, it has already been a month after the elections. The new committee was technically meant to take over in the next academic year. Despite that, we are already buzzing with excitement, overflowing with a plethora of interesting ideas to be executed during our tenure. My board members seem like a truly dedicated bunch, thus causing me to make sure that I do my part and spearhead the team well.

I am definitely unsure of what lies ahead in the distant future, but I am definitely looking forward to unfolding this interesting new chapter of my university life.

Take care!

It definitely resembled my experiences in my high school prom as well the May Ball back in Bellerbys College Brighton.

After months of planning and scurrying around local shops for sponsorship, the night was finally here.

I was dressed up since early afternoon, heading straight towards the hotel for last minute preparations. Most of the organising committee were also there, looking extremely presentable and glamorous. That, though, has gone by very quickly as the hectic running arounds in the venue wore our hair and outfit down.

Cocktail drinks were set to greet the guests upon the arrival and certificates as well as prizes were cross-checked. Sound system for the performers and the emcees were examined whereas the final itinerary for the night has been clarified amongst all the organisers.

The clock kept ticking and it was finally time to usher the guests in. Bright artificial fire welcomed them into the grand ballroom of the Victoria Inn, then to their seats with specific hand-written greeting cards atop the scattered flower petals and the bucket of wine bottles waiting to be opened. Not to forget, the candelabras illuminating every table as strong centrepieces. It was generally an extremely English-like setting, only enhanced by the amazing outfits our dear guests have donned.

The night began with speeches from the outgoing president and our guest of honour. Shortly after was my first speech as the incoming president of MASSOC.

After all that I had been going through, giving a speech suddenly just felt rather effortless. Maybe I was just tired?

Anyways, dinner commenced and we indulged ourselves in the delicacies graciously served by the hotel. Chicken with wine sauce, salmon with Hollandaise sauce, strawberry shortcake and chocolate mousse were some of the dishes being presented, mostly mouth-watering to all the guests.

We then had entertainment in store for the guests, starting from casual acoustic performances by fellow members, also an extremely saucy dance routine by the Malaysian girls and finally the highlight of the night, a Pasadembo band, singing popular tunes to get even our guest of honour singing alongside them, reminiscing the old times back when he was a university student himself. He is a Malaysian lecturer by the way!

A series of prizes were given away, starting with raffles then to the Best Dressed Prizes and the ‘highly coveted’ Mr and Ms MASSOC. The shortlisted few were told to catwalk around the stage to gather votes from the members of the floor.

Amazing (and some wacky and funny) prizes were given away, leaving the crowd to burst with laughter and elated from their lucky wins. The grand winners of the night, Mr and Ms MASSOC, were then prompted to start the dance floor with the help of merengue instructors.

In no time, the dance floor was filled with all guests, learning how to merengue while constantly switching their dance partners, possibly getting to know other attendees in the ball. Soon, the music switched to proper DJ music with fantastic clubbing songs for all the guests to keep the momentum going till the end of the night. Most people have stayed through the whole event, going back satisfied.

By the end of the night, people have dined well and danced well, also gladly entertained by everything that was prepared - all that we were asking for from them. We also broke the record of the number of attendees for this annual event through impressive publicity and we are sure that the event will only get even better in the coming years. It was certainly a great start to my Easter break.

Having experienced this made me think back about my time back in Bellerbys, dancing my heart out in the May Ball. If you are ever on the fence whether to attend this college event, stop thinking and get your tickets now! You will not regret it!

Lastly, have a Happy Easter everyone!

Thank you for reading!
