Spend an afternoon with the circus, uncovering the secrets behind the Big Top, or gain a greater appreciation of art through shopping. And at the end of the day, if you're in need of something filling and sweet, sit down for a slice of heavenly homemade pie.

Play
The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art: You may not know what the circus and art have in common, but at the John and Mable Ringling Museum, you can tour 21 galleries featuring European, American, and Asian works of art, as well as relive the golden days of the greatest show on Earth at the circus museum. Here you will find the "world's largest miniature circus," a 3,800 square-foot exact replica of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as it appeared from 1919 to 1938. Admission costs $25, and you can spend days exploring the collections.

Shop
Women's Exchange Inc.: At Women's Exchange Inc., you can support the advancement of art while buying yourself something pretty at discounted prices. The consignment shop has donated more than seven million dollars to individuals pursuing a career in the arts or funded grants to art organizations since 1962. Stop by to peruse the aisles of antiques, paintings, china, bric-a-brac, jewelry, and clothing. Items are discounted by 25 percent if not sold within 21 days, and 35 percent of the sales goes to the arts.

Eat
Yoder's Amish Restaurant: For more than 25 years, Yoder's has served fast-and-friendly Amish home cooking to Sarasota locals. However, people come from all over to taste its award-winning pies. Every morning, Mrs. Yoder bakes more than 25 varieties by hand, including Dutch apple crumb, Southern pecan, mom's egg custard, and the ever-so-popular peanut butter cream. Dinner entrees start at less than $10, but don't forget to save room for pie.

As a single gal I'll admit, at times the dating game can be a little daunting. Those magical moments of meeting someone by accidentally grabbing the same gallon of milk at the grocery store or randomly sitting next to a handsome, rich, smart, funny, well dressed, and single stranger during your plane ride seems to only happen in movies.

Air New Zealand is hoping to change all that--well, at least the plane scenario; if you're on the prowl at the deli counter, you're still on your own. My favorite Kiwi airline is offering a match-making flight complete with special guest stars Jason Mesnick and his gal pal Molly Malaney from The Bachelor. Will there be a rose ceremony in place of the usual in-flight movie, or at the very least some tips for finding the guy or gal of your dreams, maybe right after the in-flight safety talk? I'm rooting for it.

Hopeful singles should book a round-trip flight for September 19, 2009, departing from Los Angeles (LAX) and landing in Auckland the next morning. Book by July 19 and you'll receive $200 off your ticket. Even if you aren’t lucky enough to find your soul mate in the friendly (or, in some cases, maybe even frisky) skies, you can still use your cheap flight to New Zealand to check out all it has to offer, culturally and romantically. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet your match during your stay! All the better if he looks like Bret from Flight of the Conchords!

Personally, I fully support it but have an awfully hard time making sure everything I consume is organic, everything I buy is sustainable, and everything I dispose of is recycled. <sigh>It’s environmentally crucial … but sooooo tedious. Which is why I’m always pleased to find an example of recycling that’s actually insanely cool. Case in point: Design Hotel Sax in <a ?="?" href="http://www.bookingbuddy.com/?arrival_city=PRG">Prague. </sigh>

Let’s start with the building itself, shall we? According to the hotel’s history, it was built in the 14th century and belonged to a blacksmith named, not coincidentally, Sax. Later incarnations include an orphanage, a hospital, and an apartment complex before it was finally converted to a hotel. If that isn’t optimal recycling, I don’t know what is.

On the interior, the designers apparently rescued and refurbished for all that they were worth, outfitting the place with original furniture and accents from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. The pieces they chose where of the futuristic ilk (which is amusing now that the future is today), so the whole place has an inescapable mod-meets-George-Jetson vibe. Each room is unique and features more of these returned-to-glory furnishings.

When it comes to appreciating the old instead of tossing it out for the new, Prague’s Old Town gives you plenty of reasons to keep appreciating. The immediate environs of Design Hotel Sax treat the traveler to a multitude of historical and architectural treats, among them Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, and the Stahov Monastery.

Like the entire “green” movement, Design Hotel Prague isn’t necessarily cheap, either. Rates start at €120 in the low season for a standard room and climb up to €244 for a suite in the high season. But, you’ll be doing your part for the environment (well, kind of) and you’ll enjoy a completely unique hotel experience.

Old-World treasures and modern-day gems are waiting in winding alleyways and rolling countryside. For $20 or less you can step into the simple life at an 18th-century mission, enjoy a pint with locals and canine companions, or pick up an artsy souvenir.

Play
Mission San Carlos Borromeo: Go back in time at an 18th-century Spanish mission, built long before California became the 31st state. If you're inclined, daily services are still held in the stone church, and sometimes accompanied by a choir. For those with a historical bent, self-guided or docent-led tours take you through the mission's 250-year history. It's even possible to see founder Father Serra's sleeping cell (sure to make you thankful for modern-day comforts). The most peaceful place is the courtyard, typically bursting with fragrant flowers. Sit back, soak up the sunshine, and contemplate a spiritual life for as little as $5 per person.

Drink
Terry's Lounge: What to do after running with Rover along Carmel's beautiful shoreline? Head to Terry's Lounge, a pet-friendly pub just blocks from the beach. Part of the charming old Cypress Inn, the lounge began welcoming furry friends when the Doris Day became part-owner 20 years ago. Today, locals bring their four-legged companions and exchange news over a pint of local brew. If you come on the weekend, martinis and gourmet burgers are served with a side of sweet jazz (water and biscuits for canines).

Shop
Two Sisters Designs: Carmel's high-end stores are great for window-shopping, but for one-of-a-kind reasonably priced souvenirs, head to Two Sisters Designs. Hidden down one of Carmel's charming alleyways, this sister act has been creating eclectic keepsakes for 14 years. Get in on the goods with a funky, homemade bead necklace, or bring home some sunshine in a Two Sisters crystal sun-catcher. The shop is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but since it's also a working studio, the sisters are sometimes there outside regular hours.

Thanks to travel agency photographs of bleached white houses with blue-domed roofs built into cliffs high above the ocean, Santorini has been forever imprinted on our minds as the epitome of Greece. It's time to step inside the photo and get to know the people who call the island home, or see the small towns in person as you take a ride on a moped. And when evening falls, you'll feel transformed by the food as you dine in a romantic setting.

Stay
Smaro Studios: At Smaro Studios, you'll be treated like a close relative. The inspiration behind the hotel comes from Grandma Smaro and her devotion to her home and family. Her grandchildren rebuilt the house after it was destroyed by an earthquake, redecorating it in the style of her era. Upon arrival, you're greeted with a bottle of Vinsanto wine and mixed nuts, and are encouraged to relax in the hot tub or take in the sweeping views of the Caldera. Room rates start at €100 (about $141; check XE.com for current exchange rates), and include breakfast.

Play
Rent a four-wheeler or a moped: With 13 small towns located within 45 square miles, Santorini begs to be explored by moped. Some claim this is the only way to see the island. Blue rooftops dot the horizon and the endless ocean surrounds you as you zoom along in the open-air. A must-see on your outing is the town of Pyrgos, where you will discover breathtaking scenery at every turn. Rental places run rampant in downtown Fira, so don't be afraid to haggle a bit on prices.

Eat
Restaurant Vanilia: Don't let the name fool you, as there's nothing ordinary about this restaurant. The open-air patio overlooking the Caldera, spanned by trellises laden with lush greenery and a drapery of pink flowers, makes an ideal setting to enjoy a good meal. As the sun sets, you can dine by the soft glow of little candles spread throughout the restaurant. The menu features a contemporary spin on Greek dishes with an Italian twist. It's heavy on the seafood but offers a smattering of meat dishes. For cheese lovers, the Saganaki, or fried feta cheese, is gooey perfection.

Shop
Mary Dickinson Shop and McKenzie's: You'd be hard pressed to find three-cornered hats and silk bonnets in shops elsewhere in the country. Take advantage of Williamsburg's historic kitsch and pick up a bonnet at the Mary Dickinson Shop (Jones Mill Lane) or an old-fashioned tonic and some rock candy at McKenzie's (Jones Mill Lane).

Eat
The King's Arms Tavern: The most authentic British pubs in the country are Williamsburg's colonial taverns. Play like John Quincy Adams and tuck into a wooden, candle-lit table at The King's Arms for hot and hearty prime rib or Game Pye (similar to a chicken pot pie). It's a good idea to call ahead for dinner reservations, particularly on weekends, but lunch is usually a safe bet. Expect to pay from $27to $35 for dinner, $12 to $14 for lunch.

Stay
Colonial Capitol B&B: A crisp white and black 18th-century colonial manse, the Colonial Capitol B&B also boasts dozens of windows that keep the house airy and bright all year round. The friendly hosts will pick you up at the airport or train station upon request, and rooms are cozy with antique wood furniture and soft, fluffy bedding. The B&B is just a three-block walk to the heart of Colonial Williamsburg and several local restaurants. Rooms start at $145 per night and include full breakfast.

The tiny hamlet along California's coastal Highway 1 has a little piece of everything that makes the Golden State beautiful crammed into a five-mile radius: redwoods, beaches, cliffs, hot springs, mountains, wildlife—not to mention award-winning spas and restaurants. Thankfully, you can still find a decent deal here, even if you're not into camping.

Play
Point Sur Lighthouse: The Point Sur State Historic Park & Lighthouse is worth a visit any time of year. Perched on volcanic rock just off the coast, the walkways and lookouts surrounding the lighthouse provide prime Big Sur views even when the area's trademark fog is swirling about. In the summer, however, visitors can take a moonlit tour of the lighthouse. There's no better way to get a sense of the building's original purpose, and on the rare clear summer night, taking in the Big Sur coast by moonlight is an experience not to be missed. Tours cost $10.

Eat
Big Sur Roadhouse: Fortunately, some of the best food in the area is also some of the most affordable, particularly at the Big Sur Roadhouse. With an emphasis on California's Latino roots, the menu includes everything from straightforward but delicious enchiladas and burgers to more inventive dishes such as portobello mushroom caps stuffed with leeks, chilies, and Manchego cheese. The decor is also pleasant with a fireplace in the corner, wooden tables, and plenty of big picture windows, plus the staff is friendly and helpful. Entrees range from $14 to $26.

Stay
Treebones Resort: Set on a hillside with the Los Padres National Forest behind it and sweeping ocean views in front, the Treebones Resort offers 16 yurts, complete with heating, electricity, wood floors, and big comfy beds to make this the most luxurious camping-like experience you've ever had. The property also has a heated pool and hot tub, and a restaurant in the lodge where guests get a self-serve waffle bar breakfast each morning and can opt for dinner too, if they like. Showers and bathrooms are a short stroll away from each yurt, and are absolutely immaculate. Rates start at $155 per night including breakfast and require a two-night minimum on weekends and all stays April through October.

Walk the hallways of the best-known sports shrine in the world after suppertime, when corridors are quiet and the ghosts and legends of baseball past stare back. Grab an enormous burger at a die-hard fan's diner, and take home a souvenir from a one-of-a-kind memorabilia shop.

Play
National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum: The museum's postseason exhibit, with World Series moments and artifacts from the last 100 years, is meant for junkies like you. Explore other exhibits and hear stories about Babe Ruth, women in baseball, and African-American players. Check out a ticket booth from Yankee Stadium and other pieces from ballparks of the past. Plus, your kids will love the scavenger hunts and sandlot clubhouse with a mini Miracle League field, games, and toys.

Shop
National Pastime: This Main Street institution is one of Cooperstown's oldest memorabilia stores. For serious baseball fans, browsing these crowded aisles is like a visit to the Hall of Fame, except here you can take home whatever you like. Get baseball cards, photos, vintage jerseys, posters and other items you won't find anywhere else. If you're lucky enough to still catch them before they're snapped up, check out the sea-green Comiskey Park stadium seats or 1930s Cookie Lavagetto model split-finger glove. There are also broadside posters and stadium pins from the Negro League, or less expensive game patches and T-shirts from recent years.

<sl:ad></sl:ad>Eat
Cooperstown Diner: Don't leave town without downing the softball-sized half-pound burger at this tiny diner. It's your basic greasy spoon with character … and the occasional hungry Hall of Famer. The owner, who used to live in the Bronx near Yankee Stadium, loves talking to customers about baseball and sharing insider tips on Cooperstown.

5 Fun Things to Do in South Padre Island

Just a smidge (technical term) north of Mexico, you’ll find yourself on the balmy beaches of South Padre Island, Texas. A small resort town merely blocks wide at the southern tip of Padre Island, this little burg was decimated by Hurricane Beulah in 1967, only to be subsequently rebuilt into a haven of bliss.

Popular with both families and spring-breaking co-eds (though not usually at the same time), this getaway spot features beach-y Gulf-breeze splendor with no need for those pesky passports. Should you find yourself with an itinerary sending your sunny little self down south in this direction, I’ve compiled a list of must-dos for your minimal moments off the beach.

Kiteboarding. Strap your feet to a board, grab the handle of a kite and (if you catch the wind right) get pulled through the surf faster than you can say “gale-force winds.”

Dolphin Research and Nature Center. With oceans naturally comes ocean life, and with ocean life comes the need for research and conservation. Get a hands-on lesson about all things aquatic around Padre Island and, for a mere 25 bucks, you can even adopt a dolphin. At last check, you could claim a bottlenose named “Nubbins.” Move fast.

Waterpark. With a name like a German medical procedure, Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark sounds a lot less fun than it is. Well, prepare for a pleasant surprise. Tube shoots, surfing machines, uphill water coasters and more await the amusement-seeking chlorine fiend…and a swim-up bar awaits the older libation-seekers.

Sandcastle Building Lessons. Just a little bit of water, some sand, a shovel and a pail? Sure, it’s that simple if you can be comfortable with a mediocre sand castle. For those of you more interested in quality, form, longevity and all-around sand-sational aesthetics, schedule yourself some sandcastle building lessons. You’ve got plenty of expert instructors to choose from: while it may be messy, these people don’t mess around.

Black Dragon Cruises. Ooookay, technically this may qualify as a “kids’ activity” but I’ll remind you that real pirates were certainly not for children. In that spirit, I say head on board this pirate ship and enjoy the heck out of the pirate crew, pirate stories, treasure hunt and, well, face painting. C’mon you’re on vacation; just go with it.
