I made a resolution, such as it is, at the start of the year that I would spend less time writing about religion this year. Sometimes, though, religion crops up with stupid crap that is utterly irresistible. The following text, purporting to be a short essay by Andy Rooney has been making it's way around the intertubes as a meme. Since someone I know posted it, I thought I'd use this forum to post a point-by-point rebuttal. I think it's important to rebut this argument because it is steeped in distortions, and outright lies that, if left unchallenged, might lead some to believe that the argument is actually valid.

... Pardon me if I have no sympathy for your plight. You got off a lot easier than Mark MacDonald, Brianne Deschamps, and Vanessa Crawford. Frankly, you got off easier than the bus driver too, whose only shortcoming was happening to be at the wrong place when your night-of-wanton-irresponsibility was charging through.

Make electoral reform a priority

... If you read this blog much, you know that my general political leanings are Conservative... but what I really want is an electoral system that is fair. Fairness leads to voter satisfaction and to good government. And isn't fairness and good government what all Canadians want, irrespective of their political stripe?

With all the unfortunate incidents of people who shouldn't be on the river ice falling through, I found this rather apropos... proof that even golf can be dangerous... I golf. I do so with such skill that I regularly have to search for the ball, but you know, I draw the line at the cactus patch. I can splurge the few dollars on a new one. I'm pretty sure that if this guy had an ice hut, he'd be out there with his Hummer trying to pull it in, and we'd read about it in the next day's news. Thanks...

People have been known to call me cold-hearted. Well, if you can look at those 30 medals and say with a straight face that the money that was paid to win them couldn't have been better spent for the benefit of all Canadians, then you are absolutely a world-class expert on being cold-hearted. Even not spending it at all would benefit all Canadians more than 30 medals.
