Ken Katkin comes through in the clutch for you all once again by compiling the setlist (available after the jump) for Yo La Tengo's annual all-request set on WFMU which took place this past Friday. Here is the professor's take on this year's all-request set.
Yo La Tengo's annual WFMU All-Request Marathon show took place this year on the evening of Friday, March 5, 2010. Once again, I tried to keep score at home. Thanks to Jeff Tartakov for identifying "Blue Line Swinger" in the fifth set. (I am deeply embarrassed that I failed to identify that Yo La Tengo original myself). Thanks to Ira Kaplan for disclosing that the instrumental that kicked off the fourth set was "Caravan," and that in the second set "Indian Giver" was performed in medley with "Second Hand News." Ira also filled me in on some of the references in the closing medley that I didn't catch, though he thinks there were still more that he can't remember. Any help in further perfecting this list would be gratefully accepted.

In anticipation of his upcoming solo debut due out next week, Josiah Wolf (of local faves WHY?) is playing a couple shows in the area over the next week. The first show is tomorrow at the Mad Hatter. He'll be sharing the bill with other local faves, headliner Bad Veins, You, You're Awesome and A Decade To Die For. His record release headlining gig is set to take place next Friday at the Monastery which is at 2601 Stanton Ave. in case you were wondering.
He's also released a couple MP3s for our previewing pleasure which you can preview below. Or should I say, that you WILL preview below. Dude plays all the instruments on the album. I play zero instruments on any album :-( See you at the shows.
So I've finally gotten around to doing something I've long wanted to/considered which is to start a record label. Whatever a record label is these days I'm not entirely sure but my version is going to be digital only (or 99.9% digital) and it's called Music Per Se. I've been thinking of doing this for a while and after procrastinating for as long as possible, things are starting to get going. I will say, which is obvious when you look at the site, things are in the very early stages. Alpha stage if you will. Maybe we'll get to Beta one day but just consider it a study on minimalism for the time being. The important thing is that we plan on having fun with it, whatever "it" is.
Most importantly, I'm very pleased to announce the first artist in the Music Per Se family is a great musician (and even greater friend) by the name of Vincent Levandovsky. His first record is called Farthest Eyeball Popper and it's without a doubt unapologetically lo-fi. It's also unapologetically awesome in my opinion but I'm probably biased.
So far, you can pick it up on iTunes, Amazon and lala with more stores to come. If you want to sample some of the tracks before you inevitably purchase the album, you can hear a couple below and a few others on Vincent's MySpace page. If you like what you hear tell your friends and tell them to tell their friends. If they don't cooperate, tell them you don't want to be friends with them anymore.
I was scanning the headlines on CNN.com today and was suprised when I saw "Come along on tour with Handsome Furs" on the front page. After clicking the link, I was taken to a page for a documentary series called Indie Asia: On Tour with Handsome Furs. The series is made up of episodes filmed by the band on Flip cams as they tour Asia. Mashable.com has a story talking about the partnership between CNN and Sub Pop that lead to this series (CNN has also partnered up with Vice to bring a bit of Vice's interesting brand of journalism to the masses).
It's cool to see a band like the Handsome Furs get exposure like this. They put on one of my favorite shows of last year at the Southgate House and deserve any credit or exposure thrown their way. Check out the online series here.
Yet once again, it looks like this year's MusicNow Festival (Mar. 30th - Apr. 1st) is going to be an absolutely stellar event. Joanna Newsom will kick things off on Tuesday. Having never seen Joanna perform, I'm extremely excited about her performance. St. Vincent is slated for Wednesday. Annie will be performing works, both new and old, and will also have a piece she wrote (which was commissioned by the festival) performed by yMusic. Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) will close out the fest on Thursday night with a rare solo concert.

Haitian-born artist Wyclef Jean issued the following statement in regards to the earthquake that struck the island nation yesterday. If you're able to, make a donation via the methods mentioned below.
Haiti yesterday faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, an earthquake unlike anything the country has ever experienced.
The magnitude 7.0 earthquake – and several very strong aftershocks – struck only 10 miles from Port-au-Prince.
I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now.
President Obama has already said that the U.S. stands ‘ready to assist’ the Haitian people. The U.S. Military is the only group trained and prepared to offer that assistance immediately. They must do so as soon as possible. The international community must also rise to the occasion and help the Haitian people in every way possible.”

Check out a track from the new Clogs record, The Creatures In The Garden of Lady Walton, due out March 2nd on Brassland.
