One Location, Endless Variety

The river location was perfect because we had plenty of options without needing to move around. The bridge in the background made some beautiful shots, and we found plenty of different backdrops along the water and forest line. It’s one of my favorite things about finding a spot like this because you get such a full gallery without needing to drive from place to place.

Neutral, Comfortable Clothing

A lot of parents expect it to be a struggle to get their high schooler to figure out outfits for a photoshoot. It doesn’t have to be complicated! For senior guys I suggest one outfit that feels comfortable and familiar, and another that’s more dressed up. That mix of relaxed and polished gives you options depending on what your photo needs may be, whether it’s grad announcements, a print for your grandparents, or just remembering who you were and your style during high school.

Capturing Relationships at a Pivotal Moment

Including the family in senior photos changes the whole energy of the session. Suddenly everyone’s laughing, teasing each other, actually being themselves instead of trying to look perfect. But if you’re worried your senior will feel self conscious during the shoot with an “audience,” we can always do the family photos at the beginning or at the end of the session. Either way, it’s the perfect time to capture some family moments in the midst of a big milestone.

Colorful Outfits and Personality

This session was full of vibrant, colorful outfits, and so much personality showed through in the photos. There’s no need to shy away from color. Bright, bold choices bring out personality and make for striking prints that feel alive on your wall.

Don’t dampen your style to fit into a minimalist aesthetic if that’s not really you. Your photos should feel like you, not compromising for someone else’s vision.

Candid Moments and Play

So many of the best shots from this session were candid. The kids were running around in the grass, playing with each other and their parents. Exactly how I like it!

I create space for these natural moments by including an element of play in my photoshoots where smiles just happen. It’s so fun to capture genuine moments! I know that’s what makes families love their photos and keep coming back each year for more.

We shot at a beautiful park in the Sacramento area that felt true to this family. The soft grass makes a lovely texture in the background without distracting from the subjects. Why Studio Sessions Work So Well

There’s no stress about prepping your home or coordinating timing. The studio has lots of backdrop options to choose from, and the lighting stays consistent throughout the session. Everything is set up and ready to go, which means you can be present with your baby without thinking about anything else.

Neutral backdrops are a big part of what makes studio images feel timeless. They keep attention where it belongs and won’t look dated years from now. We chose some browns, grays, and this lovely blue backdrop that complemented the baby’s crocheted blanket perfectly.

Including Parents

The parents jumped in for some photos too! They had really cool style and seemed so calm and confident as first-time parents. Documenting these early days as a new family is one of my favorite things. You won’t believe how fast they can fly by.

Meaningful Detail Shots

Detail shots are always a priority during newborn sessions. While simple is good, what makes them special is including something personal like wedding rings or a toy the baby will grow up with. These keep them from feeling like generic stock photos.

Dad’s tattooed hand with the baby’s tiny hand was one of my favorite shots from the session.

Golden Hour Light

My preferred time of day to shoot is golden hour. The soft backlighting creates that dreamy glow that just can’t be replicated at any other time. Natural light works beautifully for seniors because it feels warm without being harsh or overdone.

Adding Some Artsy Flair

We enjoyed playing with a prism during this session to create some cool rainbow effects. It adds an artsy vibe for seniors who want more than just classic headshots. Experimenting with different techniques helps give each session its own feel.

Getting a Mix of Everything

We made sure to get a variety of images. Classic headshots for yearbook? Check. Something your grandparents will love? Got it. A cool artsy shot for your Instagram? Absolutely. The goal is to create a gallery that works for every part of your life.

Including Family

Senior photos are also a great opportunity to get family photos. You’ve already booked a time slot, so it’s easy to add on some portraits with your siblings or the whole family. I really enjoyed the bright blue and green color palette they chose for this session. It was really cohesive without being too matchy-matchy.

Natural Beauty

Her freckles were so beautiful! I always appreciate a natural look for makeup, but seniors are more than welcome to glam it up if they want. It’s their day after all! Either way, my approach to retouching is natural. I only remove temporary blemishes and keep your natural beauty shining through.

Coordinating Outfits

The girls wore matching outfits which was so sweet. Matching can be fun for sibling sessions, especially at a young age. Choosing outfits that complement each other also works beautifully, if matching feels like too much. The key is keeping the focus on the kids and their connection rather than what they’re wearing.

Timeless, Simple Portraits

These images really capture childhood magic. The golden light and watching the girls play in the fields together created such a dreamy feel. Some of the final images almost felt like paintings and will be perfect for wall art!

Simple works best for sessions like this. No props or elaborate setups needed. A natural setting with good light lets kids be themselves, and that’s when you get the most beautiful images.

Natural Smiles and Candids

As always, I got a mix of candid moments and more classic images where they were smiling at the camera. I’ve found that natural expressions come from letting kids play and interact, rather than forcing poses or perfect smiles. I always incorporate movement and play. When kids are focused on each other instead of the camera, that’s when the magic happens.

Including Your Partner

Some clients want to only focus on artistic shots of just the belly and celebrating mama, which is beautiful, but if your partner is up for being in photos, it can be really special! You’re a team after all, and this is such a big moment for both of you.

Including the Dog Too!

They also brought their pup along for a few shots, which was so fun. Although these two had no trouble with natural smiles, I think bringing your pet is a great way to bring out laughter and genuine expressions during a shoot.

Dressing for Comfort

Thankfully, the weather was mild for this shoot so she chose a flowy dress, and he kept it casual with a nice polo and jeans. Flowy dresses work great for maternity sessions because they move beautifully and don’t feel restrictive. When you’re comfortable, it definitely shows in the photos.

Connection Over Poses

I got a lot of variety during this session. Some artistic shots from farther away, some closeup details, and plenty of moments focused on their connection. My shooting style is all about movement, so you’ll never have to worry about stiff poses. I always aim to capture the excitement and bond between you and your partner as you prepare for this next chapter.

Timing It Right

We lucked out with some of the trees blooming during this session! Getting that mix of greenery with a little pop of color made everything feel so fresh. Spring in Sacramento brings so many blooming trees and fresh greenery. It’s one of my favorite times of year to shoot outdoors because everything feels alive and vibrant. I loved wandering around the park with them and documenting such a highlight in their life.

Including Pets

I love that they decided to include their dog. Their pup, Pretzel, was so gentle around the baby. So curious and sweet, these ended up being some of my favorite shots. If you have a pet at home, I always encourage including them in a few photos. Years from now, those images will bring back memories of the whole family during this time.

Working with Natural Light

As you already know, I love working with natural light. The window light through this session was just beautiful. It’s soft, flattering, and doesn’t startle the baby like some traditional studio lights can. Natural light also looks like real life. When you look back at the photos, they’ll feel true to how you actually remember those early days, soft and snuggly.

The Nursery

Getting to photograph the nursery was such a highlight! They put so much thought into that room, and I wanted to make sure it was documented. This is another reason doing at home sessions is so special.

Detail Shots

I always take closeups of the little details: tiny hands, little feet, delicate eyelashes. These features change so fast, and I know parents treasure these close-ups later. You think you’ll remember how small everything was, but photos help you actually hold onto it.

Creating Variety

Even though we stayed at their home, we got plenty of variety in the images. We stepped outside for a few shots in the backyard, and the orange tree made such a beautiful backdrop! Moving between rooms and going outside for a bit keeps things interesting without needing to drive to multiple locations.

Choose a Location with Variety

I can help you find locations around Sacramento that offer multiple backdrops in one spot. For example, a park with trees, open fields, and some urban elements gives you natural variety without needing to drive between locations. Moving between settings is easy and doesn’t take much time, which means you get more variety in your final gallery. I know which spots work best for lighting and background and can suggest options based on the look you’re going for.

Bring Props That Show Your Interests

If you play a sport, bring your gear. If you’re into music, bring your instrument. Art supplies, books, or anything else that represents what matters to you can make the session feel more personal. Not every photo needs a prop, but including a few helps tell your story. These images show who you are beyond just how you look and what this chapter of your life is really about.

Include Pets or Family

Can you bring your dog to your senior session? Yes please! I love dogs, and it can be so special to capture your bond with your pup. As long as the location allows, I’m all for it. You can also include other family members in the session. Since you’ve already hired a photographer and chosen a beautiful location, it’s a convenient opportunity to grab a few updated family photos. A few shots with your parents or siblings capture this milestone with the people who’ve been there through it all. Print these pictures and they make for great gifts later, too.

Get a Mix of Classic and Personal Shots

Classic headshots are timeless and versatile. You’ll need them for graduation announcements, yearbooks, and college applications, and they never go out of style. But more themed shots capture your personality and the moment. Having both gives you options for different uses and keeps your gallery from feeling too one-note. The balance between classic and personal is what makes a senior session feel complete.

Plan Your Outfits Ahead

Bringing 2-3 outfit options gives you variety without overwhelming the session. One outfit should feel classic and timeless, and one should feel more like you. Wear comfortable shoes you can actually walk in since you’ll be moving around. Avoid large logos (except for college sweaters/shirts) or distracting patterns that pull focus away from your face.

Solids and Textures Over Busy Patterns

Solids photograph beautifully and keep attention where it belongs: on your face and belly. Textured fabrics like knits, linen, or lace add visual interest without pulling focus.

Patterns can work, but stripes or plaids may distort across the curves of your belly. Florals tend to work well because their organic shape moves naturally with your body instead of fighting against it.

Showing Off Your Belly

Belts, wrap dresses, and empire waists naturally emphasize your bump and create flattering lines. Whether you prefer something form-fitting or loose is completely up to you. Both styles look beautiful in photos.

Having options for both can give you flexibility during the session, but wear what feels most comfortable. During the hot Sacramento summers, loose and flowy can definitely be a bonus.

Colors That Photograph Well

Soft neutrals, earthy tones, and muted colors photograph especially well and tend to feel timeless. Jewel tones work if you want something richer with a pop of color.

It’s best to avoid overly bright or neon colors, as they can reflect onto your skin and cast an unnatural hue. If your partner is joining the session, coordinate your outfits without worrying about matching perfectly. Complementary tones look more natural than identical colors.

At-Home or Boudoir-Style Sessions

If you’re doing an at-home session, showing a bit more skin can feel natural and intimate. A nice lingerie set, kimono or robe, or cute lounge set all photograph beautifully for this style.

These images tend to feel more personal and timeless, but only do this if it feels right for you. There’s no pressure to include anything that doesn’t feel comfortable.

What to Avoid

A few things tend not to photograph as well. Clothing with large logos or text can be distracting, and anything too tight that makes you uncomfortable. Shoes that are hard to walk in aren’t worth it since you’ll be moving around during the session.

Over-accessorizing can also pull focus. Simple jewelry and minimal accessories tend to work best.

Bringing a variety of options gives you flexibility without overwhelming the session. You might want one fitted and one flowy outfit, or one casual and one dressier, whatever feels right for you.
