Zoo trip part of Holiday Bowl experience for Huskers

The Husker football team made a trip to the San Diego Zoo after a solid two-hour practice Sunday in preparation for the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl.

Nebraska prepared for its Dec. 30 matchup with Arizona with a good morning workout, then unwound with a trip to the world-famous zoo in San Diego. They will have one final full-scale practice Monday and will have a walk-through at Qualcomm Stadium Tuesday before the big game.

The Pacific Life Holiday Bowl is a chance for the Huskers to finish the season with 10 wins for the first time since 2003, the final year of the Frank Solich era that was ended with interim-coach -- and now current coach -- Bo Pelini leading the Husker football team to a win over Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl.

Nebraska team in California, begins preparations for Holiday Bowl

The Husker football team has landed in San Diego and is preparing for their Dec. 30 matchup with Arizona in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl.

The team left Lincoln on a chartered flight Christmas Day evening, braving 10 inches of snow and blizzard-like conditions to make the journey to California. They have found the weather conditions in San Diego to be much more friendly than the cold winds and accumulating snow they left behind in Nebraska as they prepare to take on the Arizona Wildcats.

The Huskers are looking to finish the season on a good note after coming up one second short of a major upset of Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game. A win over Arizona will be Nebraska's first over the Wildcats in three tries and will cap the team's first 10-win season since 2003.

Suh to lead Huskers into Holiday Bowl

Husker football had another honor added to its long and distinguished list earlier this week, as defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was named the Associated Press Player of the Year.

Suh was a key ingredient in the success of the Big 12 North Division champion Husker football team this season. He led the team in tackles with 82, had 12 sacks and 23 tackles for loss and finished his career with 56 career tackles for losses, second all-time in school history behind two-time All-American Grant Wistrom.

Suh is being looked at as a potential first pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. Todd McShay of ESPN has projected Suh to be the first pick, likely going to the St. Louis Rams. He was considered a good first-round pick prior to last year's draft, but he decided to stay in school and finish his degree, and it paid off in many ways for him. He won numerous post-season awards, including the Outland and Lombardi trophies, and was fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting.

Huskers earn college degrees

Husker football tickets are becoming a hot item once again as Nebraska prepares for the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30 against Arizona.

The Huskers have been working hard as they get ready for the 50th bowl game in school history. And while preparations were taking shape on the field, eight current Huskers enjoyed a great moment in their lives off the field with graudation ceremonies.

Current Huskers Larry Asante (Economics), Tyrone Fahie (Management), David Harvey (Sociology), Colton Koehler (Business Administration), Blake Lawrence (Marketing), Derek Meyer (Agribusiness), Matt O'Hanlon (History) and Ndamukong Suh (Construction Management) took the special walk at the University of Nebraska to receive their bachelor degrees. They were joined by former Husker Octavious McFarlin, who earned his degree in Sociology.

Huskers gearing up for Holiday Bowl

The Huskers are gearing up for the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30 in San Diego, Calif., with preparations for the showdown with Arizona focusing on the fundamentals.

Practices have been going well for the Huskers as they get ready for their second bowl trip in as many years and 50th overall. It will be Nebraska's second trip to San Diego to play in the Holiday Bowl, and it will be the second time they have faced Arizona in this game as well, losing to the Wildcats in the 1998 Holiday Bowl 23-20.

The Huskers coaching staff is approaching the early part of Holiday Bowl preparations like it is spring ball, giving players the opportunity to get back into game mode and healing some late-season injuries. A lot of focus will go into taking care of some issues on the offensive side of the ball, as the Huskers will need to do better than the 106 yards in total offense they managed in a 13-12 loss to Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Husker football team prepares for Arizona

With finals wrapping up this week, the work can now begin as the Husker football team gets ready for the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, Calif., on Wednesday, Dec. 30.

The Huskers will face Arizona in the Holiday Bowl, as both teams are coming off impressive seasons that saw them finish as the second-best team in their respective conferences.

Nebraska, of course, finished off the year by winning the Big 12 North Division title and came within one second of a colossal upset, losing on a last-second field goal to Texas in a 13-12 decision.

Arizona had a breakout season this year and finished with their best record since going to the Holiday Bowl in 1998. Arizona finished the year ranked 8-4 and faced eight bowl-eligbile teams during its run to second place in the Pac 10.

Arizona coach Mike Stoops complimented the Huskers' physical style of play, and has commented that this year's Holiday Bowl will be "a very physical football game."

Suh caps banner award-winning week

A Husker defensive tackle who terrorized opposing quarterbacks and offensive linemen received more than his share of kudos this past week.

Ndamukong Suh brought home four major awards this past week, earning the Nagurski Trophy, Lombardi Award, Bednarik Award and Outland Trophy. He is also one of five finalists for the Heisman Trophy, which will be presented Saturday night.

Suh absolutely changed the way other teams prepared for the Husker football team's classic Blackshirt defense this season. Many times, the Portland, Ore., standout would be double- and triple-teamed, but would still make the big plays that helped lead the Huskers to a 9-3 record and a trip to the Holiday Bowl later this month in San Diego, Calif.

Suh and the Blackshirts helped keep Nebraska in many of its games this season, and his presence helped open the doors for players like Jared Crick and Pierre Allen to have outstanding seasons in the trenches for the Nebraska defense.

Huskers come up short, get Holiday Bowl bid

The Huskers came oh-so-close to pulling off a monumental upset Saturday night, but fell 13-12 to Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Alex Henery hit four field goals, the last coming with less than two minutes left, to give the Huskers a 12-10 lead. A bad kickoff and a horsecollar penalty helped put the Longhorns in position, but they nearly blew it when quarterback Colt McCoy threw the ball out of bounds to stop the clock.

Initially, the clock said :00, but replay showed that :01 was on the clock when the ball went out of bounds, giving Texas an extra second to try, and make, a game winning 46-yard field goal.

While the Huskers won't be going as a BCS team, they were invited to play in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30 in San Diego, Calif. The Huskers will take on Arizona, a team they lost to the last time they went to the Holiday Bowl, losing 23-20 in the 1998 matchup.

Nebraska has played three Pac 10 teams in bowl games in their history and have yet to win. Prior to the loss to Arizona, the Huskers lost to Arizona State in the 1975 Fiesta Bowl and fell to Stanford in its first bowl appearance, the 1941 Rose Bowl.

Third Big 12 title meeting between Huskers and Longhorns

The Huskers and Texas have had some interesting matchups over the years, and two of college football's winningest programs will meet yet again on Saturday in the Big 12 Championship Game.
The game, being played at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, features two of the five winningest programs in college football history, and the two teams have had some tremendous matchups over the years.
In 2006, Ryan Bailey hit a field goal late in the game after Nebraska fumbled what would have been a game-clinching first down, giving the Longhorns a 22-20 win.
The stakes will be a lot higher this time around, and this matchup has seen its share of upsets in high-stakes games.
In 1996, Texas derailed Nebraska's hopes of a third consecutive national championship with a 37-27 win in the first Big 12 Championship Game. In 1960, Texas was ranked fourth when the Huskers came to Austin and upset the Longhorns.

Huskers set to erase Top 10 losing streak

The Huskers have had their share of heartbreaks recently, but are hoping for a happy ending to the 2009 season with a win in Saturday's Big 12 Championship Game.

It's been tough for the Husker football team in recent matchups against Top 10 teams. Nebraska beat then-No. 2 Oklahoma in an exciting game in 2001 in Lincoln, but haven't won a game over a top 10 team since.

The Huskers have lost 12 straight games to teams ranked in the top 10 of the major polls, with seven of those losses coming against teams ranked in the top five.

Texas comes into the game as the No. 3 team in the BCS standings. In 2006, the Huskers nearly beat Texas in Lincoln, only to come up two points short against the No. 5 Longhorns. Four years earlier, Texas was ranked No. 7 when they edged Nebraska by three points.
