matali and Nodus together again .... in Paris

The collaboration with the French designer matali crasset and NODUS carries on:
Big Leaf, the new rug designed for Nodus Limited Edition is in the centre of the installation
“le blobterre de matali”, to be discovered since October at the Centre Pompidou,
the Paris “Beaubourg”.

“In the blobterre, the rug lies in the heart of a dome shaped sprout, called extratoof.
Big Leaf is like a circle of enormous leaves that give the rug a jagged profile.
It reminds a bed of oversized leaves of hand knotted wool.
An earth colored rib, made of hand twisted cotton fringes, completes each leaf.
The ribs extend beyond the border of the rug so as to float in the air
and their ends form the tufts of wool that creep all around: the rug becomes a space.
These tufts, attached to the extraroof structure,
spread the special fragrance created to mark this new green area.
First of all we are encouraged to go around the rug and discover the four essences forming the scent of the blobterre: penetrating then into the carpet and seating on it,
we can appreciate the sweetness of the perfume, as the final bouquet recomposes”

The blobterre of matali crasset is a fiction, an area of freedom. It’s a representation of a different world with its logic, smells, noises and natural elements in which you can explore, imagine, create.

A primitive life experience that invites you to wonder, to experiment different practices and to imagine different ways of living, struggling to change the logics that govern the world, inventing new ones with imaginative elements. The Big Leaf rug is one of these elements.

NODUS AND FORMAFANTASMA

Following is the description of the "Migration" project made by the studio Formafantasma for Nodus.

A project between design, art and fashion that I liked very much.

MIGRATION

About the commission

The project Migration is the result of a commission from the Italian rugbrand

Nodus.

Nodus operates by selecting the best rug-making craftsmen all over the

world, visiting them one by one and verifying materials, techniques and

working conditions to guarantee ethical production. Internationally

renowned designers are invited to give their personal interpretation of

the oldest traditions and techniques in carpet making.

From the wide variety of techniques, Studio Formafantasma has chosen

to work with needlepoint, one of the last techniques still produced in

Europe. Each of the three rugs from the Migration collection have been

produced entirely by hand in Portugal with an average embroidery time

of a month per carpet.

About the collection

18th century Rococo decors of romantic roses and perfectly symmetrical

leaves, exist today through traditional needlepoint techniques, forcing

nature into mans image. As a reaction to this idealised representation of

nature, Studio Formafantasma designed a collection of three rugs inspired

by the work of 19th century ornithologist Jan James Audubon, famous for

his scientific categorisation of birds.

On the final designs, instead of minuscule and geometrised flowers, three

giant birds seem to be trapped in the moment, flying on the surface of the

rugs. The carpets are composed as out-of-scale garments, finished with

wooden buttons, as a reference to the fine needlepoint technique used

both in tapestry, and to embroider clothes.

With “Migration”, Studio Formafantasma suggests a new type of

romanticism, wild and liberating, expressing the most ancient of human

desires: to migrate towards the new and unknown, while relaxing upon a

carpet of beautifully embroidered feathers.

Nodus at Fighting Flowers, Trieste

From November 12th to December 4th, in Trieste (Italy), LipanjePuntin artecontemporanea and Agricola Monte San Pantaleone present an exhibition where a contemporary art gallery and a social co-operative try to develop a reflection on nature, between research and beauty.

Among the exhibited works there is “Dark Flower”, designed by Massimo Gardone for Nodus, a woolen rug with a floral motif in silk in relief.

Nodus at Triennale with Donata Paruccini

On November 4th, 2010 Triennale Design Museum opened the exhibition “Donata Paruccini: piccoli segni nei dintorni”, in it’s CreativeSet spaces.

For the first time the works of the italian designer are shown completely.

Among the projects in the exhibition there are four rugs of the Nodus 2009 collection, our first one.

The models are Arlecchino, Coriandolo, Pakistan and Rigolo.

The exhibition will last until December 8th, 2010.

NODUS at Triennale with the Campanas

From October 14th 2010 to January 16th 2011 Triennale Design Museum presents, for the first time in Italy, "Antibodies. Fernando e Humberto Campana 1989-2010", an exhibition by the Vitra Design Museum of Weil am Rhein, Germany.

The exhibition show the productive process of the Brazilian designers showing many of their designed works.

Among the exhibited products there are two rugs of NODUS, Sao Paulo and Circus.

Humberto and Fernando Campana
The Brazilian brothers Humberto (born in 1953) and Fernando Campana (born in 1961) work together as designers in São Paulo since 1989. Humberto, graduated as lawyer, starts this cooperation as a self-made artist, whereas Fernando has graduated in Architecture. They received many awards in their career, among those the ones from the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Design Museum in London.

From October 15th to 24th 2010, for the first time, Nodus attends „Interieur“, one of the most important and qualified exhibitions for interior architects and decorators. For ten days Kortrijk becomes the datum point for professionals from all Europe.

In collaboration with Galrie Sofie Lachaert Nodus presented a selection of five rugs from it’s exclusive collection: Alì, Atom, Barbed Wire, Cahier and Eros.

The set up of the booth has had a considerable success among the visitors to such an extent that our booth has been included in the top ten of the exhibition. From the very forst day of the exhibition, usually reserved to professionals, the appreciation of the quality and the aestethic of our products has been very high.

The skilled fusion between art and design created five micro-environments, each one representing a different context, each one with a different message for the visitor.

Nodus for San Lorenzo Yacht

Nodus has recently realized a handknotted rug in hemp for the Architecture Studio led by Rodolfo Dordoni who designed theinteriors for SL100 the new Yacht of the Sanlorenzo shipyard.

The use of hemp made it possible to obtain a slightly rough effect, both in color and in touch.

It's a magnificent result for the Nodus project to be on the cover page of Cover, one among the most important rug magazines.

The featured rug is "Circus" a trend-breaking rug designed by the Campana Brothers, in the top field of international design.

hand tufted rugs

Hand-tufted rugs and hand-knotted rugs appear to be very similar and are commonly mistaken for one another, but in that Hand-tufted area rugs are not as durable as the knotted type they are much more affordable. The main reason this type of area rug is so affordable is because they are much easier and quicker to make. Using a special tool to form the tufts and eliminating the time it takes to tie a knot in each one save time and simplifies the process.
The process starts by cutting the material into the correct size and shape so that it can be stretched over a backing frame at which point the craftsman can commence. A drawing of the proposed area rug is created so that its image can be projected onto the material and the area rugs design can be traced. Like a paint-by-numbers kit, numbers are given to each area to represent the colors to be used. The correct color yarns are than pushed, with the use of a unique device called a tufting gun, through the backing. A latex glue is then applied to hold each tuft to the backing. The looped tufts are then cut to create the pile. A layer of latex is then laminated on the back of the rug along with a layer of a material designed to protect the floor in the homes where the area rug will be placed.
