Needless to say, I jumped at the chance to work with the wonderful people there as well as the amazingly talented teams they assembled to create the four different covers.

I've been chomping at the bits to show these movies to you guys since they've been done, but now, finally I am allowed to!

The one I'm featuring on this post is a Steampunk themed design brought to inception by the creative minds of Asiel Design (event and floral design,) Tanja Lippert (photography,) and Tia Reagan (stylist.) It just so happens that they're all good friends of mine so I was that much more excited to work collaboratively on this project.

(You might remember that I worked with this same team a few years ago in our first collaboration, here. If you do remember that, then you're a true fan :-)

If you're not familiar with the idea of "steampunk", just think; industrial revolution mechanics + victorian sensibilities + modern execution.

Movies by director, Terry Gilliam, "Wild Wild West", "City of Lost Children" and, more recently, "The Prestige" and "Sherlock Holmes" all feature steampunk styling to some extent. In this particular rendition, the creative team took the industrial look and feel of the steampunk/Victorian era and style and applied it to a bridal context. There's are a lot of light bulbs, chains, and glass that can be reinterpreted and applied to a modern bride's aesthetic.

Take a look at the movie I made, here below and please let me know what you think in the comments section! Cheers!

I wanted to take just a brief moment to explain some of the details of the shoot. This is more of a post for other video people although anyone that takes in interest in BTS (behind the scenes) features might also be interested in this post :-)

I was on-site for six hours. Actually, I arrived an hour early to get to chat with the bride (we hadn't previously met) but didn't really start shooting until my appointed start-time.

The package was a two-camera ceremony, but one-camera for the rest of the day. My main camera was a Canon 5D MkII shooting 1080/30p. My ceremony camera was my trusty old Canon XHA1. None of its footage made it into the clip below.

Because it was a one-camera shoot, I had to move around a lot during the ceremony and other parts of the day to get all the angles I needed for the short movie. I was mindful of b-roll I would need to supplement different parts of the movie and even during the ceremony, I needed to get different angles in order to keep the bride and groom (and other audience members') attention and visual interest. So even though you see different angles in the ceremony, know that it was all shot by one camera and edited together to appear to be multi-cam.

The lenses I used were

Canon 16-25mm f2.8

Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS

Canon 75-300mm f4-5.6 IS

Sigma 24-70mm f2.8

Sigma 105mm f2.8.

Here is the lovely email Heather sent to me after she watched the video:

Andrew -
I honestly don't know where to begin. I waited all day to view the video to ensure I didn't have any distractions; and to be honest, I have been so nervous to see it because I was afraid if I didn't like it, it would be the lasting imprint of my wedding day. Furthermore, for the past 3 months I have been a little down on myself for spending so much time and money on a day that went by in a blink. Sometimes I feel like the day didn't even happen and I insanely ask myself, "how many more days until the wedding?". So many of my friends told me to be sure to stop and take a breath and look around because it goes by so fast. I honestly felt like I did that, however, with all of the morning appointments and then getting ready to walk down the isle, to then greeting all the guests and then right into pictures, then a few dances and then... before you know it ... it's all over.

Your video allowed me to finally attend my wedding. You captured the very emotions I was feeling that day and you brought to life my dream wedding that before, really just felt like a dream. I usually do not like seeing myself on video, but your talents really made me feel beautiful - thank you. So many details I had already forgotten were reborn and all of the hard work that I put into the small details will be remembered forever. I was actually sobbing by the end of it! It was like you had known us for years and knew just the moments to capture to tell the story of our journey.

I hate to be arrogant, by my video is my favorite out of your portfolio ;) I hope other brides-to-be view it and that it inspires them to use your talents for their own wedding days. Aside from the location, you are the best decision I made for our wedding. I will be eternally grateful for your work and I hope this e-mail expresses how much you have touched me. Tom is traveling on business right now and I cannot wait to share this with him. It will stir a completely different set of emotions in addition to the ones I felt and I know he too will treasure it forever. You are truly gifted. Thank you so much.

Warm Regards,
Heather

The first movie I would like to share with you for 2011 is this video from Bear Flag Farm. The way this particular wedding came about, for me, makes for an interesting object lesson. I initially was hesitant to take the job because of various reasons that I won't get into - but after carefully considering the pros (getting a chance to work at Bear Flag Farm for the first time; meeting the owner, Tina; co-laboring with photographer, Meg Smith; developing a quirky and fun email-relationship with the bride,) and other factors, I decided to accept the job.

When I arrived at Bear Flag, it was unseasonally hot. But the ample shade and air-conditioned prep areas brought relief for the still, warm air. Nevertheless, I was impressed with the layout of the venue and the condition of the facilities. I was - more than anything - excited to shoot the ceremony amongst the lavendar. I could smell its aroma from where I parked my car.

I finally got to meet Heather, the bride, who is actually from Colorado, for the first time. We hugged and chatted - it was as if we were old friends.

I feel particularly honored to have been given a chance to record a momentous day for Heather and Tom because they pulled out all the stops (artisan coffee and ice cream bar for the guests and a ferris wheel?! nice) and trusted me to capture all of the festivities for posterity. Two especially poignant moments are when we see Tom's little boy walk in as his best man, and when his sister toasted their father, Tom Sr., who had recently passed on.

Please enjoy this short movie below (or go here to see Heather and Tom's custom movie page.)

It's been a while since I've blogged anything for your enjoyment, but moving forward I plan to post a lot more stuff here...

Over the holidays, my father has been staying with us and I've had a chance to talk with him, share in his wisdom and really reflect on the things that matter most in this world. I think it's time for a new start and to embark on new journeys and to embrace new things to come.

Although it isn't exactly an official 'resolution' of any kind, I do plan on writing a lot more blog posts and not all of them - in fact, probably most of them will not - contain videos. I plan on sharing a lot more about things that happen to me and new ideas and products I have for Studio MSV.

Today is 1/11/11 - that's a lot of 1s. And since the number "1" often signifies a beginning, I think it's an appropriate time for new starts. For now, accept my seasons greetings and please check back often. It's time for new things to come :-)

This was the Christmas card we sent out this year. The photos were taken by my good friend, Jen Skog.

I had been itching to do something like this for a while and was excited that Abe and Tran were open-minded enough to let me try it with them. Also, you wouldn't believe the grueling 6-hour shoot we went through to get all the footage we needed to make this video. Check it out and please leave a comment!
