<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>When I started coaching back in 2000, there was no such thing as "finding your niche"!  We trained as life coaches and went forth hoping to multiply our clients.  Some of us succeeded as generalists and some of the longest-serving coaches I know are still generalists.  They have built their reputation that way and continue to have new business referred to them, often by former happy clients or people who've been reading their newsletters for years and feel they know, like and trust them.</p>
<p>We have learnt a lot, however, about marketing our coaching businesses over the years and these days we know that coaching in a specific niche - using our specific knowledge and being seen as an expert - simplifies the client attraction process.  </p>
<p>Think of finding your drains blocked at home.  You certainly might call the local handyman (if you know, like and trust him) but many people will pick up their phone directory or go to Google and find a number for Dyno Rod or some other company specialising in blocked drains.  We know they will understand the problem quickly and have the right tools to help us.</p>
<p>And so with niche coaching.</p>
<p>Bernadette Doyle of <a href="http://www.clientmagnets.com" target="_blank">Client Magnets</a>  has been writing this week about finding your niche so read on to hear what she has to say:</p><br />
<p><strong><a href="http://marionryan.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c5bba53ef011570922209970c-pi" style="FLOAT: left"><img alt="Findniche" class="at-xid-6a00d8341c5bba53ef011570922209970c " src="http://marionryan.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c5bba53ef011570922209970c-120wi" style="MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px" /></a> Finding Your Niche<br /></strong> <br />It's interesting how we talk about 'finding' your niche, as though your niche is lost or hidden. In truth, there is a part of you that already knows exactly what your niche is. The question is, are you willing to listen to this part? </p>
<p>This week I want to share some tips from my own experience establishing the Client Magnets niche, and also what I have learned from helping clients uncover their niches.</p>
<p id=""><strong>Stop Undervaluing What Comes Easily To You </strong></p>
<p>A common theme I have noticed when helping clients to 'find' their niche, is that often their niche is right under their nose! But often we undervalue things that come easily to us, assuming 'everyone knows that' or 'isn't that obvious?' Let me give you an example. Some time ago, my friend Veronica came round to help me with some office reorganisation. It made such a difference I almost cried. Veronica was baffled by my response and gratitude, shrugging off the difference she had made as though 'it was nothing'. The fact is, it may have been 'nothing' to Veronica, but it was EVERYTHING to me. Do you have skills and expertise which comes so easily to you that you have underestimated the value it makes to others?</p>
<p id=""><strong>Don't Expect A 'Road to Damascus' Type Experience </strong></p>
<p>Sometimes I think we put pressure upon ourselves, and anticipate that the moment we suddenly uncover a niche, that it will be accompanied by lights flashing and dramatic music. The reality, I have found, is rather more mundane. Whilst I have worked with clients who have experienced light-bulb 'eureka' moments, they are rare. For me personally, I think that uncovering a niche is more like a silhouette emerging through fog. Has expecting a 'road to damascus' type experience, prevented you from seeing what is right under your nose?</p>
<p id=""><strong>Expect Your Niche To Change Over Time </strong></p>
<p>The niche you select for yourself today is not cast in stone. It can evolve and develop as you do. When I first became self-employed, my niche was cold calling, but that has now evolved into a marketing approach which gets prospects calling YOU. Bob Burg, an expert in sales and prospecting, started his career as a memory expert. Doreen Virtue is now best known for her work with angels, but was formerly known as the dating doctor. Are you avoiding committing to a niche because you are afraid you will be trapped forever?</p>
<p id=""><strong>Your Niche Is Already Seeking YOU </strong></p>
<p>All day every day you are being presented with clues and nudges in the direction of your niche. Are you paying attention to those little signs, or are you too busy making other plans? The phrase 'Client Magnets' first floated into my consciousness in the summer of 2001. It took another six months before I started a newsletter on the same topic. I didn't 'find' Client Magnets. It came to me. My part was noticing and responding. From day one I felt that Client Magnets had a life and an energy of it's own, and that my job was to work in partnership with that energy rather than trying to 'make it all happen' all by myself. </p>
<p>Are you so busy trying to 'make things happen' all by yourself, that you are overlooking opportunities which could be easy for you?</p>
<p>This week, take a stand wherever you are right now. Make a commitment to yourself, to your niche, to your audience. When you truly commit to where you are right now, you will be surprised how quickly opportunities open up for you.<br /></p>

<p>We've all been there. We get booked to speak, but then the promoter says, "We want you to come and speak, but you can't sell." Ugh...What do you do? </p>
<p>First, don't throw in the towel. You can still make it well worth your while, even if you don't sell AT the event. Below are three simple but effective ways to maximize this type of opportunity.</p>
<p><strong>1. Use a Drawing to Collect Leads</strong></p>
<p>If the promoter tells you that you can't sell, just say, "No problem. May I do a free prize drawing?" Often, he or she will say yes. A drawing is a great way to drum up interest in your product or service while collecting qualified leads for your ezine. Here's how.</p>
<ul>
<li id="">Give away a product or service that you most want to promote. You might choose an audio program or a consultation with you. Pick something that you want the audience to know about because, of course, if you're giving it away, you have to talk about it for a while. This is your opportunity to unabashedly promote all of the benefits of your product and the amazing results people have had with it. 
<li>Pass around a fishbowl or a basket. As I've said, it's amazing how people will clamor to get their business card into a fishbowl for the opportunity to win something. 
<li>Build your list. Let everyone entering the drawing know that they will also receive a "complimentary subscription to your XYZ ezine." That way you've disclosed that you'll be sending it to them in advance of their opting in with their business card. 
<li> Celebrate the winner. Have the person who wins come up to the front and say, "Everyone, give Sarah a hand. She won the XYZ product!" 
<li>Be ready afterward. After your talk, people will come up to you and ask how to get your program, and they'll want to know what else you have. Be ready with order forms, or if that's not permitted, see #3 below. </li>
</li></li></li></li></ul>
<p><strong>2. Turn One Gig into Many with a "Stay Connected" Form<br /></strong> <br />Whether or not I can sell at the event, I make sure to get my "Stay Connected" or "Looking Forward" form into people's hands. This is my magic tip for turning one speaking gig into many and, if I can't sell, for capturing emails so that I can be in contact later. </p>
<ul>
<li id="">The top half of the page contains three checkboxes that are important for my business goals going forward. Yours should reflect your own goals as well. The first one says, "Yes, I would love a complimentary subscription to your Invisible Close ezine so I can get tips that I can immediately use to boost sales in my business." The second checkbox says, "Please contact me about scheduling a possible keynote, workshop or training. I loved your talk." The third one is, "I have a business referral opportunity for you." </li>
</ul>
<p>If they love you, people will often come up and say, "You have to talk to my group!" So you say, "That's great!" and ask them to write it on the form. Be sure to ask for their primary email and phone number.</p>
<ul>
<li id=""> The bottom half of the form has a picture of my product, my contact information and three strong testimonials. There's a dotted line where they can tear it off, hand back my part, and keep my testimonials if they want to.<br />  </li>
</ul>
<p><strong>3. Sell On Your Own Turf!</strong></p>
<p>A great strategy, if you can't sell at an event, is to offer the participants a free teleseminar to cover one of the juicy points you didn't have time to cover during your talk. Schedule it within 48 hours of your talk. Again, collect business cards or at least their first name and email address so you can send them the free call information.</p>
<p>This works in two ways. First, you can add them to your ezine list if you let them know in advance they will be getting a complimentary subscription. Second, you can invite them to the free teleseminar, and, on your turf, it's open season. You can make any offer you like!<br /> <br />With just those three simple tactics, I've turned "no-sales" events into whopping successes. And you can, too!</p>

&lt;p&gt;There are many tips and tricks to help you improve and perfect your article-writing but if you have a brain, an internet connection and a keyboard then Bob's your Uncle.&lt;/p&gt;

Where are they all hiding?&amp;nbsp; It's tempting to go round peering under cabbage leaves in the hope of locating the rare lesser spotted coachee because helping the people you were meant to serve feels so damn good you can't get enough of it!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If you've experienced the frustration, scarcity or anxiety around filling your coaching business, you are far from alone.&amp;nbsp; Many wonderful coaches have given up the work they love because they learnt how to coach - and loved it - but never learnt how to attract their ideal clients to them.&lt;/p&gt;

People talk about the secret of a profitable coaching business or the key to your coaching prosperity but this is baloney.&amp;nbsp; &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Honest, there's no secret.&amp;nbsp; There's only stuff you don't know yet and - more infuriating - stuff you know but don't do yet.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So read on and let me tell you how you can grow your business...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As well as being a successful coach for many years I now run &lt;a href="http://www.theabundantcoach.com"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Abundant Coach&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/a&gt; which is a group coaching programme for new or somewhat experienced coaches who are always in a state of struggle about how to find more clients.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Find more clients?&amp;nbsp; We make it sound like they're stuck in a dark cupboard or at the back of the garage under a pile of old newspapers.&amp;nbsp; The truth is we need to know how to attract clients and because so many coaches struggle with this, they don't get enough experience and that in turn affects their confidence.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I used to have a particular client with a huge hairy business goal.&amp;nbsp; She was amazing.&amp;nbsp; She swung into action between coaching sessions and came back each week with a list of accomplishments as long as your arm.&amp;nbsp; When she wasn't building that successful business she was a trainee coach struggling to keep up her skills and she often said to me - I wish you'd create some sort of programme for people like me.&amp;nbsp; I need to learn how to get some clients but my confidence is so wobbly now I'm getting in my own way.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In the end up the only way to keep her quiet was to create the programme.&amp;nbsp; Yes, persistance was one of her great strengths.&amp;nbsp; And though I felt sure she was echoing what many other newer coaches were feeling, I decided to survey a group of them anyway.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I guess that's my first tip.&amp;nbsp; You have to find out what your potential clients are struggling with and give them what &lt;strong&gt;they&lt;/strong&gt; want,&lt;strong&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/strong&gt;rather than what &lt;strong&gt;you &lt;/strong&gt;want.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;How you survey them is up to you.&amp;nbsp; Sit down with a little focus group and let them talk.&amp;nbsp; Get on the phone to a handful.&amp;nbsp; Set up a simple online survey using &lt;a href="http://www.SurveyMonkey.com"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SurveyMonkey&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.&amp;nbsp; You can do this for absolutely free as long as you keep your survey to fewer than 10 questions and no more than 100 people answering.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In my experience you start seeing patterns and similarities very quickly.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A note of caution though.&amp;nbsp; Just because you can identify a problem they have isn't enough.&amp;nbsp; You have to be sure of two things:&lt;/p&gt;

Many otherwise outgoing professionals are hesitant about using networking events to attract new business to them. They feel self-conscious about joining a room of strangers and uncertain how to 'sell' their business to others.</p>

<p>Networking, however, is not about selling what you do to others and remembering this, makes attending such events much more comfortable for the life, business or executive coach looking to grow their business. It's not about who can help you but who you can help.</p>

<p>You can find my first five <a href="http://marionryan.typepad.com/newcoaches/2007/11/effective-busin.html">networking tips here</a>. So now let's take a look at our remaining five effective business networking tips:</p><p>
1. When you find a regular business network that you know is the right
match for you and your coaching business, give strong consideration to
helping out or joining the organising committee. This will raise your
profile in the group, give you increased exposure to the regular
members and put you in pole position for speaking or other business
opportunities.</p>

<p>
2. Become a match-maker -- think creatively and remember what other
members have told you about their business and who their ideal client
is. Perhaps you can make new introductions between people in similar or
complementary businesses or even link a potential client with another
small business owner; both of them will love you for it.</p>

<p>
3. How can you continue to build relationships in between meetings?
Suggest meeting for coffee as many business owners will be just like
you -- looking to extend their contact base and delighted to get an
opportunity to get to know you better. Alternatively, if you are
time-pressed, ring and say "it was great to meet you the other day, do
you have a few minutes now? I'd love to find out a bit more about your
business so I can recommend you to others." This then gives you the
same chance to share more about your business and the type of clients
you are looking for.</p>

<p>
4. Be on the look-out for useful resources for fellow members. Whether
it's a newspaper article, a website or a book recommendation, email or
pick up the phone and share it with someone else. They will remember
how helpful you were and keep you to the forefront of their mind should
they or one of their contacts be in need of a coach.</p>

<p>
5. How else can you become memorable to others? This could be an aspect
of your image, like always wearing a particular colour. It might be
your business card that includes an inspiring quotation or poem. It
could be your strap-line that is fun, punchy or just a little
provocative.</p>

<p>
Remember, people can usually sniff out insincerity quite easily and you
will achieve far more effective long-term success at network events if
you work to build genuine rapport with others rather than selfishly
trying to convince others how great you are!</p>

<p>
No-one likes a hard sell and those coaches who are anything less than
professional sales people, can take heart that when it comes to
networking, "givers gain." With this in mind, you can approach your
next networking event with the confidence of knowing you have at your
disposal the perfect opportunity to optimise and increase your client
base.</p></div>

Networking, in its broadest sense, means communicating, sharing information and building relationships with others. Though business networking can conjure up an image of doling out business cards to all takers at the meeting of the local Chamber of Commerce, this is not the way you'll attract new clients and grow your business.</p>

<p>But networking as a business-building strategy can be extremely effective for life, business or executive coaches. Bear in mind that it is a type of marketing that can give us a much quicker client win than building a newsletter list or writing a weblog. It doesn't mean however that you attend meetings with the aim of getting rid of as many business cards as possible or sharing your lovingly polished five-minute business speech with whoever you can steer into a dark corner!</p>

<p>You are lucky. You are a coach. You are paid to listen, be curious, ask questions and share resources. You already have all the skills you need to be a great networker.</p>

<p>Here then are the first five of my top ten tips for effective business networking:</p><p><strong>Top Tips for Top Networkers</strong></p>

<p>1. Give all your attention to the person you're speaking to. Don't look over their shoulder to see if someone 'better' is available. This rather uninspiring individual could very well be exactly the person your business needs right now</p>

<p>2. Be friendly and curious. Smile, make eye contact and be genuinely interested in learning more about their business. Some great questions are:</p>

<p>* What do you enjoy most about what you do?<br />* What made you decide to become a ______?<br />* Where else do you network? (This can be useful information for yourself and for you to pass on to others)<br />* So who's your ideal client?</p>

<p>They will feel flattered by your interest and much more likely to show an interest in your business too</p>

<p>3. Ask for their business card and don't throw it carelessly into the pit of your briefcase -- treat it with respect. Take a moment to look at it with interest and keep it in your hand till you've finished speaking or put it carefully in your card holder.</p>

<p>4. Avoid the temptation of getting stuck with one person because you feel nice and safe with them. Be on the look-out for others you can include in your conversation and be prepared to introduce new people to each other. They will love you for it, especially if they are new to the group and feeling awkward on their own. It is perfectly ok to excuse yourself after a few minutes in order to mingle with others</p>

<p>5. Often, you will find the best networking takes place before and after the event so aim to arrive early and have enough time to stay chatting at the end. Arriving early puts you in pole position to meet and greet others while by the end of the event, people are feeling more comfortable and are likely to be looking to build relationships further.</p></div>

&lt;p&gt;She says:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Did you know it costs far more to sell to a new client than it does to sell to an existing one?&amp;nbsp; This means that you need to build strong relationships with your clients, which keep them coming back for more, buying from you again and again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But how do you do this when you’re busy running your business?&amp;nbsp; How do you find the time to keep in touch with dozens, if not hundreds of contacts every month?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An email newsletter is a very cost effective way of doing this.&amp;nbsp; You don’t need to be a graphic designer or a world class copywriter to produce something that keeps your company name in front of the people who matter.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;Chantal Cornelius has been building businesses through newsletters for
