"My guess is first I'll need some zippy flyers and a tri-fold brochure," said an email from Matt last week. Sadly, he is not the only one thinking that the first step to building a professional business is printing fliers and brochures. After all, that's what everyone does, right? And it seems like a logical place to start, doesn't it?

It's interesting that while most people who call me about my marketing mentoring services are well-established practitioners looking for a new edge, Matt's message was one of the 14 emails I got last week from people who are just starting to build their practice.

They all wanted to know the best way to get started fast but seemed to be fixated on getting their fliers and brochures ready.

Fact is, "zippy flyers and tri-folds" are a bad idea when you are just starting out. They can be pricey if you want them to look sharp. But even worse - they are so "inflexible".

In private, candid conversations many entrepreneurs and service professionals share with me that what they really want is to make a difference in the world by sharing with others what they have learned about life and business.

But instead of starting right now, they postpone doing this until some undefined time in the future!

Big mistake!

There are three reasons why you should start teaching now:

First, by teaching, you make your solutions, and yourself, easier to find.

Most buyers start out as information seekers. They don't search for things to buy, but for solutions to their problems.

Second, teaching is a better way to grab attention.

Bombarded by promotions, our potential customers have become masters of dodging sales pitches. Sharing effective tips and resources becomes a powerful client magnet.

Lack of discipline is what often prevents small-business owners from creating extraordinary organizations and having more meaningful lives. Discipline is the ability to continue doing things after the mood in which they were started is long gone.

Here are tips on how to go about working on your self-discipline:

1. Discipline doesn't always mean punishment. Changing the way you look at being disciplined is themost difficult step. Just thinking about it often brings to mind negative connotations: limitations, sacrifice, reprimand . . . But it's up to you to use the stick or the carrots to motivate yourself to take action. Realize that self-discipline doesn't limit you, but rather it gives you the power to do the things that matter most both in business and in life.

I can’t even tell you when I first ‘noticed’ him, but I think it was during a dance our band played at in the Manwaring Center at Ricks College sometime around March of 1984. He was in charge of the sound mixing boards for the band and worked at the back of the room in the dark, which might account for my not seeing him much before that. But one night…for some reason…the lights were on in the back of the room and from where I stood on the stage, I could see the sound and tech guys standing at their stations.

I was the lead female singer with several pop/rock bands and this night I was singing one of my signature songs, which included high notes that I hit hard and loud. A confident, poised lead singer will pull the microphone back a ways from her mouth when she hits the loud notes, thus preserving the hearing of the sound guys wearing headphones to monitor the sound mix. However, know that I was terrible at remembering to pull the microphone away from my mouth when I hit these loud notes. So, this night, as I took a deep breath and hit the first high note, I watched the head sound tech, rip the headphones from his head, throwing them to the floor. I could tell he was miffed, to say the least. Brian proceeded quietly, but furiously rant and rave at the other sound guys and I knew that his ears would be ringing for hours because of my mistake. I had seen this guy helping to roll up cords and things after dances, but his reaction to having his eardrums destroyed by my voice had caught my attention. Thus, you have my first vivid memory of Brian.

If you think that building a following on social networking sites eliminates the need for building your own email list, I say WAKE UP!

Daily, we are bombarded with the massive amount of information, so getting and keeping the "email attention" of potential and current clients is something every business owner should be very concerned about.

In fact, when you see or hear case studies of people who go from zero to tens, even hundreds of thousands of dollars in profits in only weeks, you can be sure those people have invested time and effort to build their own list first!

Yes, truly, one of my favorite fairy tales has always been "Beauty and the Beast." To me, the tale of Beauty's beast whispers of so many aspects I love about romance, as well as life in general. The idea that patience and love see beyond the battered and broken, that the power of love brings change, compassion, sympathy, courage and triumph. It's a wonderful lesson, a beautiful romance, and I always wanted to write my own version of it.

And then, there's the fact that, to my way of thinking, "Beauty and the Beast" represents the ultimate example of the ‘bad boy' syndrome so many of we girls secretly long for and utterly understand . . .

The question that is most often posed within the innocently curious mind of a young woman blossoming into womanhood is this: "When a boy kisses me, how do I know if it's a good kiss?"

First of all, let us dissect this sentence into important phrases, essential words, and the meanings therein, beginning with the word boy. This word is not merely ineffective but altogether unsuitable. Blatantly indecorous, if you will. Let me clarify this. The word boy in referring to a good kiss creates an unequivocal conflict of interpretation. We therefore must stipulate that the word boy--implying a juvenile, immature male almost always incapable of producing a good kiss for the mere fact that he is gangly and uncoordinated--is an inappropriate use of terminology in this instance. Thus, we replace the word boy, and the vision that appears in our minds when this word is used, with the more desirable mental apparition of masculinity materializing when we substitute the word man. Ergo, the sentence reads: "When a man kisses me, how do I know if it's a good one?" As demonstrated, the word man holds a different connotation, a different mental picture, if you will. When the word man is substituted properly, as it should be, fully matured homosapien females of the universe envision not a thin, uncoordinated, gangly, unappetizing male youth but rather a tall, handsome, muscular adult male.

Most public domain dabblers already know that the US government has thousands of publications in the public domain and encourages the distribution of them, or that Project Gutenberg hosts thousands of free texts that can be used for product creation. But there's a whole treasure trove of delights you can find online and off in that copyright free world of public domain, including software, audio, film, and art. And yes, they can legally become part of your next product!
