Like their feathered counterparts, many Canadians migrate south to escape the onslaught of winter. They flock to Florida, Mexico, the Caribbean -- anywhere south of the 49th parallel to wait out the winter, only to return at the first sign of spring. They've become known as the "Snowbirds".
Use of "Snowbird" in this sense may originate with the lyrics of "Snowbird", a song made popular by Canadian Anne Murray:
