Gain an Extra Hour of Battery Life With Crucial MX100 SSD

Jon Tanguy   |   November 13, 2014   |   Storage

As long as my Crucial MX100 solid state drive (SSD) is installed in my Ultrabook™, I can fly all the way from San Francisco to Tokyo and work nonstop—without needing a back-up battery or a boost from the seatback power outlet. If I can stay awake, so can my computer! It makes my work trips much more productive and pleasant—even though I’m usually relegated to coach. I digress … back to the matter at hand: battery life and SSDs.

Thankful for Change, Opportunity, and Teamwork

Darren Thomas   |   November 25, 2014   |   Storage

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I wanted to write my inaugural post about what I’m most thankful for here at Micron. Micron Storage Business Unit (SBU) and I are just nine months old (that’s right—we were introduced in March 2014). That seems like a short period of time until you reflect on all that we’ve accomplished. We’ve grown our storage leadership with two new vice presidents and two senior directors, and we helped hire a new vice president of sales for enterpr...

Doug’s IT Tech Tip: Don’t Settle for “Up To” Performance in Enterprise SSDs

Doug Rollins   |   November 20, 2014   |   Storage

I’m usually pretty easy-going. I don’t get excited too easily (well—maybe a huge sale on new SSDs, a double discount on DRAM, or free rail kits with a new server purchase would do it—but aside from that, I stay pretty calm and collected). So what’s got me wound up enough to write this blog? It’s the number of SSD companies—who, frankly, should know better—trying to distinguish themselves in the market by advertising their enterprise SSD performan...

Doug's IT Tech Tip: Extracting the True Value of SSDs in the Big Data Ecosystem

Doug Rollins   |   November 10, 2014   |   Storage

My last tech tip, Hadoop + SSDs Don’t Create Great Value—Yet, generated quite a few discussions, which social media experts tell me is a good thing–and I agree. I think it’s important that we have honest conversations about all use cases for SSDs and Flash in the enterprise. This way, we can decide where SSDs are actually adding value and where work still needs to be done for that value to be truly recognized. That is why we’re known as a trusted advisor for our enterprise customers: We provide them with a “voice of reason” about where and how Flash is best used in the enterprise.

Doug's IT Tech Tip: Hadoop + SSDs Don’t Create Great Value—Yet

Doug Rollins   |   November 5, 2014   |   Storage

In my last IT Tech Tip blog, I discussed how raw performance is no way to measure value—both in the car industry or the IT industry—and I began to discuss the much-buzzed-about Hadoop and its use with solid state drives (SSDs). Keep in mind—I’m talking about Hadoop and its distributed file system (HDFS) —as we know them today.

First, consider that the size of the “chunk” that an HDFS reads is huge, and the reads tend to be sequential. So how do you get value using an SSD that is optimized for very small random accesses? Well to be blunt, you won’t if using an HDFS today.

Doug's IT Tech Tip: Raw Performance Is NO Way to Measure Value

Doug Rollins   |   November 3, 2014   |   Storage

Everybody loves fast, right? Instant noodles, instant cocoa, microwave popcorn—yeah, the faster, the better! So why, then, do I drive a Toyota Yaris and not some “fire-breathing monster” of a sports car? It’s simple. When I went car shopping for a new(er) commuter car, I looked at the overall value of the car rather than its absolute “0 to 60 to 0” (miles per hour) performance. The Yaris offered the best overall value: It’s big enough for my family, fast enough to keep pace on the freeway, easy enough to drive and park, cheap enough to buy and operate, and economical enough, with pretty good gas mileage.

What’s Causing the Recent String of Data Breaches? Micron Talks to Wave Systems' Data Security Expert to Uncover the Answer

Jon Tanguy   |   October 24, 2014   |   Storage

National Cyber Security Awareness Month

It’s Cyber Security Awareness month, which has me wondering: are we doing all we can to protect our data? To help answer this question, I sat down with Girish Bhat of Wave Systems—an important collaborator of Micron’s—to talk all things encryption. Bhat is encryption extraordinaire (AKA, Director of Product Marketing); he shed some light on how data breaches have evolved over the last few years, he waxed poetic about the role of hardware encryption within the bigger “security package,” and he stressed the importance of standards and specifications to securing user data. Read our conversation below.

Doug's IT Tech Tip: How to Interview an SSD Vendor for Your VDI Deployments

Doug Rollins   |   October 20, 2014   |   Storage

I’m the first to admit it: In the enterprise SSD world, I’m an ”insider”—and in this case, that’s not a bad thing. I work in Micron’s Storage Business Unit, specifically with enterprise SSDs. As an enterprise SSD insider, I wanted to pull back the covers a bit and take a frank look at what SSDs can (and can’t) do to help overcome the challenges faced by so many IT shops on a daily basis.
