We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Appleton, Micron Chairman and CEO, passed away this morning in a small plane accident in Boise. He was 51. Our hearts go out to his wife, Dalynn, his children and his family during this tragic time.

Steve’s passion and energy left an indelible mark on Micron, the Idaho community and the technology industry at large.

College of Western Idaho Receives $2.5 Million from Micron Foundation

Today, College of Western Idaho (CWI) was presented a $2.5 million gift from the Micron Foundation that will support the funding needed to complete the renovation of a $16.9 million new Professional Technical Education Center in Nampa, Idaho. In recognition of the generous donation, the College announced that the new Center will bear the Micron name.

“We’re very proud to invest in CWI and this new technical center,” noted Dee Mooney, Micron Foundation Executive Director. “The Micron Foundation is committed to advancing technical education and supporting the communities where our employees live and work. This gift supports both missions as we work together with the College of Western Idaho to build on its reputation of excellence and attract a new generation of professionals to the Treasure Valley.”

U.S. Ambassador Visits Micron Israel

U.S. Ambassador Daniel B. Shapiro and his staff recently visited Micron’s fabrication facility in Israel. Site Director Yonathan Wand and Fab Manager Shmulik Perez provided Ambassador Shapiro with an overview of the site’s history and involvement in the community.

During a tour of the production area, the Ambassador remarked on the site’s impressive achievements and expressed his interest in the site’s community activities. In addition to his visit with Micron, Ambassador Shaprio visited a few other U.S. subsidiary high-tech companies in the Kiryat Gat industrial zone which included Intel and Hewlett Packard.

Micron Team Members Donate Turkeys & Hams to Idaho Families

In a Micron tradition that goes back for decades, team members recently donated 1,087 turkeys and 507 hams to families through The Idaho Foodbank. Since 2001, the donations have totaled to more than 18,000 turkeys and hams for Idaho families.

“During the holidays, it's a great time for Micron and our team members to give something back to the community especially during these challenging economic times,” said Dee Mooney, Executive Director of the Micron Foundation. “Today’s ham and turkey donation by our team members to The Idaho Foodbank is one of our favorite traditions to enrich the community.”

The Idaho Foodbank President and CEO Karen Vauk helps Micron team members unload donated turkeys and hams into the Foodbank warehouse.

Micron Chairman and CEO Appleton Receives Industry’s Highest Honor

Micron Chairman and CEO Steve Appleton recently accepted the Semiconductor Industry Association’s highest honor—the Robert N. Noyce Award. Steve was recognized as “a champion of the semiconductor industry” for his tireless efforts to strengthen the industry and for his sustained, successful leadership in the highly competitive memory business.

Boise Mayor Visits with Micron Team Members about the Community

Micron’s Political Action Committee (PAC) recently hosted a site visit by Boise Mayor David H. Bieter, where more than 70 Micron PAC members had an opportunity to interact with him and discuss the community and its future.

“I want Boise to be the most livable city,” said Mayor Bieter. “We are at a critical time. We need to take what we can affect and do something with it… Similar to Micron, we need to keep our heads down and control what we can to come out ahead.”

In order to do this, he addressed that the city needs a business environment where companies can easily expand, a public transit rail system, a main public library that is first rate in order to promote knowledge and learning, and faith in our city, government and ourselves.

The Micron PAC is a bipartisan organization that supports federal congressional candidates and leaders who have worked to advance policy issues in support of the competitiveness of our industry. For Micron PAC members, it also gives them opportunities to get directly engaged with political representatives, government officials and other experts involved in the political issues affecting their daily lives.

Helping Students in Folsom, Calif., Succeed by Supporting Innovative Educational Programs

The Micron Foundation recently made a $10,000 donation to Theodore Judah Elementary school in Folsom, Calif. Team members attended a ceremony on Friday, Sept. 23 to present to support the STAR Education program at the school. Micron’s team members in Folsom have also supported the school and STAR program in the past by donating funds and snacks to help lower income families.

Strength of the Micron Team in Puerto Rico Benefits Children with Muscular Dystrophy

Micron team members in Puerto Rico participated in the “Jala Jala” fundraiser event benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s (MDA) children’s programs in August. Team Members accepted the challenge of pulling an American Eagle Aircraft (ATR-72), weighing over 30,000 pounds, a distance of 50 feet. While Micron’s delegation was able to pull the aircraft in 9.13 seconds, the winners of the event were the children since MDA was able to raise $48,000. The Micron team is proud of their accomplishment and to be part of the fundraiser success.

Idaho Student Competes for Boys & Girls Clubs National Youth of the Year Title

The Micron Foundation congratulates Darnisha Victorain, a six-year member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Ada County, for her amazing accomplishment in achieving the Boys & Girls Clubs of America 2011-12 Pacific Region Youth of the Year award. As the Pacific Region Youth of the Year, she advances to Washington D.C. for a chance to compete for the national title – the highest honor a club member may achieve. Victorain and four other regional winners will also have a chance to meet with President Barack H. Obama in the White House Oval Office.

Prior to this recognition, Victorain received the Boys & Girls Clubs of Idaho’s Youth of the Year award in both 2009 and 2011, earning scholarships totaling $18,000 with the generous support of the Micron Foundation and other program sponsors. She is a 2011 Meridian High School graduate with a 3.3 grade point average, who is pursuing a double major at the University of Idaho this fall.

The Micron Foundation wishes Darnisha Victorian the best of luck during the National Youth of the Year competition, Sept. 16-21.

Enriching the Community at Gunfighter Skies 2011

The Micron Foundation enriches the community as a sponsor for the Silver Wings of Idaho, Gunfighter Skies 2011, in conjunction with the 366th Fighter Wing, at the Mountain Home Air Force Base, Sept. 17 and Sunday, Sept. 18.

Come join the Foundation in watching the United States Air Force Thunderbirds fly both days in thrilling, graceful aerobatic formations. The show is open to the public beginning at 8 a.m. and best of all, it’s FREE.
