Micron Foundation Supports Local Youth Innovation at Boise Art Museum

To complement Boise Art Museum's exhibition Robots: Evolution of a Cultural Icon, the Micron Technology Foundation is collaborating with the museum to present a series of robots built by young engineering students in the FIRST Robotics program locally sponsored by Micron. Aesthetically interesting and sculptural in appearance, these large-scale robots will also come to life during the museum’s educational programs in which the creators demonstrate the robots in action and discuss the process of creating their artful machines. Boise State University Meets Fundraising Challenge from Micron Foundation

Boise State University announced today they met their fundraising challenge from the Micron Foundation and plans to begin construction later this year on a new $37 million home for the College of Business and Economics. The Micron Technology Foundation committed to a $12.5 million lead gift for the business building in 2007, with $5 million of it contingent on Boise State raising matching funds by Dec. 31, 2009.

“The Micron Foundation is committed to excellence in education,” said Dee Mooney, Micron Foundation’s executive director. “Collaborating with and supporting Boise State is one of the best ways to ensure we reach this common goal, and we are pleased the university successfully met the fundraising challenge.”

Micron Hosts Annual Shareholders Meeting

At today’s Annual Shareholders Meeting at Micron’s headquarters in Boise, company executives discussed the challenging environment the company endured in 2009 and how it is poised to take advantage of improving market conditions heading into 2010.

Micron Chairman and CEO Steve Appleton discussed how the company is in a strong financial position relative to competitors in the memory industry. Micron executives covered how the company continues to achieve strong cost per bit reductions from its industry-leading technology, which is driving the company’s operating margins ahead of industry trend lines. The company also highlighted it remains focused on maintaining and widening its technology advantage in the industry as the company continues to transition to higher density 34nm NAND flash and 50nm DRAM products.

Micron now turns its attention to its first quarter 2010 financial results that are scheduled to be announced on Dec. 22.

Micron Recognized for Environmental Excellence

Micron was recently recognized for its commitment to the environment at its Boise site. Boise Mayor David Bieter presented Micron with the annual EnviroGuard Award at the Boise WaterShed Environmental Education Center for its proactive approach to environmental protection.

"Micron has a longstanding commitment to being an environmental protection leader in our industry, and this honor certainly affirms our commitment," said Rick Murray, Micron's Water and Chemical Services Manager. "We routinely work with federal, state and local officials to ensure our continued regulatory compliance and environmental protection in our operations, and it's rewarding to see our team's collective efforts be recognized with this award."

Innovation in the Manufacturing Industry Innovation Summit

On Sept. 24, Micron participated in the Idaho Governor's Innovation Summit bringing together leaders from various industries to discuss how the state of Idaho can help turn ideas into careers and economic growth. Micron's Vice President of Process Research and Development, Scott DeBoer, represented Micron on the panel discussion related to innovation in the manufacturing industry. DeBoer talked about the significance of R&D in Idaho, the need for an education system that prepares students to think globally and focus on innovation and the importance for local government to influence U.S. policy to support companies focused on technology and innovation.

As part of the summit, Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter announced that Micron was awarded $5 million in federal stimulus funds to advance a program focused on emerging opportunities in light-emitting diode (LED) technology. No Joke! Attorney for Senator Al Franken Visits with the Micron PAC

Micron PAC members recently had a rare opportunity to participate in a private visit and discussion with Mark Elias, one of the top election law attorneys in the country. Elias has been involved in some interesting election work with some very interesting politicians, including lead counsel for former Saturday Night Live cast member and newly elected U.S. Senator Al Franken, D-Minn. Elias provided Micron PAC members a glimpse into what took place in the election and the subsequent fight to get Sen. Franken seated in the U.S. Senate.

Micron Workshop Helps Bring Math and Science to the Classroom

Each summer elementary teachers visit Micron to experience hands-on, real-world activities designed to excite students about science, technology, engineering and math. Nearly 40 teachers from the Emmett School District participated in the Micron Foundation’s Partnering to Spark a Passion for Math and Science workshop held Aug. 19-20.

During the two-day workshop, teachers are introduced to Micron’s curriculum resources and participate in the same lessons Micron employees conduct for students during classroom visits. The Micron Foundation also provides all participants an opportunity to apply for a financial grant to help them integrate the lessons and activities learned during the workshop into the classroom.
