With summertime in full swing, most of us can agree that our daily ritual includes applying sunscreen. Whether getting the kids ready for camp, preparing for a day at the beach, or even just a quick jaunt to the playground, each morning starts with slathering sunscreen on every family member.

Jayden loves wiping himself with wipes, so I am able to give him a wipe to occupy himself as I’m applying with another. Now, he and I don’t have to fight anymore and he no longer has to walk around with a an unattractive white glaze over his skin. They smell good too; clean and citrus-y. Satisfied I am."

Just My Life says: "Shady Day Daily SPF 30 wipes provide a convenient mess free way to apply broad spectrum UV protection. Hygenic pre-moistened sunscreen wipes are designed for the entire body with an absorbent formula leaving the skin feeling dry and smooth. They look just like a baby wipe and you simply wipe them over your dry face and body 30 minutes before going out in the sun and they provide UVA/UVB SPF 30+ protection! They're prefect for use on your kids before you send them to school. I know my daughter has at least a couple recess breaks a day and that means she's out in the sun. A simple wipe on her exposed skin before school leaves me feeling less worried about her being out in the sun's harmful rays."

Fun in the Sun says: "The wipes are generously sized and have a lovely, light citrus scent. They felt quite refreshing as we rubbed them on our skin, kind of cool and moisturizing. It was nice that our skin wasn’t shiny or greasy or smelling like a pina colada like most sunscreens leave you. I especially liked the wipes form for its ease of application (read the boys didn’t cry or squirm as I applied it to their faces) and its convenience and portability."

Bookroom Reviews says: "Nolan received a note from school everytime his kindergarten class was going outside on a field trip or outing last year that advised him to wear suncreen. He became so overwhelmed with the message that he developed a modest obsession with it for a while, and usually refused to go outside without putting some on. Thankfully, the new Shady Day Daily Sun Protection Wipes make it much easier and more efficient for him to apply sunscreen during the hot, sunny summer days in Iowa."

The BBM Review says: "I figured if they smelled this good and felt this awesome, they couldn't possibly work that well. But they did! No one who used a wipe got even a spot of sunburn the entire weekend at the beach. The wipes were large enough that they really lasted and the time it took to use the wipes was next to nothing compared to the time it takes to lotion up every part of the body with SPF goodness."

Gloria's Place says: "It was convenient to use these innovative wipes because they are easy to carry, much easier then bulky leaking bottles, and they are easy to use. Just pull one wipe out and rub it on the skin. That’s it and that quick. The protection is not oily or slippery or messy and it can be easily used on the face. The lotion in the wipes glides on very well and it smells good too, pleasant fragrance."

A Daily Dose of Toni says: "These are perfect for back to school. Each child can take a pack of the Shady Day Sun Protection wipes in their back pack and apply before going to P.E., on a field trip or during any outside activity. The package is small enough to keep with them wherever they are and small enough to fit in my purse so if we head to the park on a whim I am not worried that their skin isn’t protected."

Cuddle Cottage says: "Now, just before we pull out of the drive, I hand each of my diminutive passengers a sun protection wipe and they busy themselves wiping wherever they can on their bodies while I ferry them to the pool. Who would have thought they'd actually enjoying applying sunscreen!Once we're at the pool, it takes just a few mess-free minutes to finish getting all three girls sunscreened, then its into the pool with no fuss and a far less frazzled mama."

3Ps in a Pod says: "Recently Mom Central introduced me to a cool new product ~ Shady Day Daily Sun Protection Wipes. They are quick and convenient when you are at home or away. The product is award-winning and backed by a team of dermatologists. Each wipe is a gentle, moisturizing wipe that helps you apply broad spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 30 sunscreen without the mess that comes from the sprays or the slop that comes with the lotions."

Cool Moms Rule says: "In our own trial, Shady Day Daily Sun Protection Wipes met with unanimous approval; the guys liked them too. I loved the light scent and convenience, while the Rhino and his Dad felt the wipes were much easier to apply than sunscreen sprays, which typically gave them only spotty, unreliable coverage (too heavy and some spots and too light in others led to some really strange sunburn splotches. I've seen them come back from the beach looking like human checker boards)."

Starting first grade marks a milestone in every child’s life. While the prospect of learning and meeting new friends proves exciting for both children and their parents, embarking on something so new and unfamiliar can feel daunting, too. To help make this transition easier and more fun, young children in Austria and Germany are given a Schultüte, a cone made from sturdy, colorful paper and filled with treats and school supplies, as they leave home for the first day of first grade.

Born and raised in Munich, Germany, Vivian Lie was eager to share the tradition of Schultüte with others when she moved to the United States. In 2008, she founded KinderCone to spread the word about this 200-year-old tradition and to provide families with the opportunity to surprise their own children with Schultüten on their first day of school. Take a look at this video to learn more about KinderCone and the age old tradition of Schultüte.

Here's what MotherTalk reviewers are saying about KinderCone:

Superdumb Supervillain says: "I think the KinderCone is a nice tradition to start with your children. You can also add your own small gifts and candies to personalize it more. There are also empty KinderCones if your child is not entering first grade but you'd still like to give them a gift that celebrates school and learning. Just add some school supplies, books, and treats and hang it from their doorknob (there is an integrated hanging loop) for a surprise they will surely remember."

Wendi's Book Corner says: "In all, the cone is a great way to keep track of special moments from your child's First Grade year (thanks to the included journal), as well as a great way for your child to make new friends by sharing pencils and temporary tattoos with other children. This would also be a great gift to send with your child to camp, just fill it with some fun treats for your child to share."

Dagmar's Momsense says: "You have no idea how exited I was to learn about the KinderCone. Growing up in Germany I was given a “Schultuete” on my first day of school, filled with little gifts. It’s a big deal for kids in Germany to get a Schultuete and I remember standing next to my best friend Danja in front of the school with our Schultueten that were as big as we were while my dad took a picture of us...I’m so exited that KinderCones are now available in the U.S. and hope that this sweet tradition will also start to be celebrated here."

Hooey! Critic says: "I really like the idea behind the KinderCone. I think presenting the kids with something special on their first day of school is one way to help make it a positive experience, but I love the fact that the cones are meant to be educational as well as fun. I can't wait to fill them back up when school starts in August! I'm sure I'll come up with some fun treats!"
Bee in the Bonnet says: "So what is this Schultüte thing? Well, it's a large paper cone filled with candies, trinkets, small gifts, school supplies or other small items that is given to a child on his or her first day of school. H particularly remembered the cone being full of his most favorite candies (his mother assures me that there was other stuff in there, but H had an eye for the sugar, apparently!). The idea behind this tradition is to "sweeten" the transition from (relative) freedom to the rigors of a scholastic routine."

Products that are Fabulous says: "KinderCone wants to inspire every family and their young children to enjoy learning by celebrating this special event in their lives. After learning about what this tradition was all about I got so excited! The cone came to the house and wow my son thought it was a Giant Ice cream cone! I am going to give the cone to him on his graduation day from kindergarten, which is coming up soon."

Life as Lou says: "Traditionally, the Schultüte was a decorated cone filled with small treats. This could happen at Kindergarten graduation, or be given at the start of 1st grade. I love celebrations and traditions. They do so much to bring families closer together and to help people slow down and have appreciation for special moments and special people. This particular moment is a hard one for many parents- I know I’m concerned with Maggie heading off to school next year!"

My Little Patch of Sunshine says: "Basically, it's a German tradition of receiving a cone of goodies for kids moving from Kindergarten into First Grade. The cone we received was very large and colorful! It included some pencils, a sweet stuffed animal (which Lydia loves and took as her own immediately), some tattoos and a journal for first grade. I added some small notebooks and candy to the cone before I presented it to my children. It is definitely cute, and a sweet gift to receive at the end of a long school year. You can purchase them filled with goodies, or empty from the Kindercone website."

Five By the Sea says: "My 5 year old was brimming with excitement and anticipation as we gently took the cone out of the tissue paper. The vibrantly colored beautiful red cone with cute little illustrations all over it, she was in awe and we hadn’t even peeked inside!!...As we went through our treasures and talked about them we got more and more excited about school and all of the fun things that comes with entering 1st grade. All of this thanks to KinderCone!!”

Black Belt Mama says: "When we unpacked our KinderCone at our house, my son loved it. It included a stuffed animal, school supplies, and other assorted fun items. He had such a blast taking out each item and he told me that he thought it was a good thing to do when getting ready to go to all day school (for him, this is kindergarten). He asked if we could do this every year! I simply love this idea...to send our kids off to school knowing they are loved and that we have taken the time to prepare something special just for them."

Watch Us Grow! says: "I was amazed at how BIG the cone was! It comes with some pretty fun goodies and I know my daughter is going to go crazy for it! I will probably add some hair accessories and more crafty stuff to it before I give it to her. And I'm already thinking about how I can reuse the cone every year."
Blessings of Love says: "Not only am I excited to give him [reviewer's son] this, but I am also excited to be able to educate my kids on traditions of other countries! Can't wait to see what he thinks! I'm sure he will want to keep the cool cone and fill it up with some of his toys or more likely since he is a boy, use it as a sword.) This cool gift is a KinderCone, a big cone shaped box filled with little goodies for my boy! In Germany and Austria they call them Schultutes. They are given on the children's first day of school in 1st grade!"

Sisterly Savings says: "The KinderCone is based on a German tradition dating back to the early 19th century. Oftentimes, the first day of school can be a bittersweet moment in a child’s life, but in Germany and Austria it is marked by a day of celebration and appreciation. On that day, families present their first grader with their very own Schultüte. Inside, the child finds little gifts, treats, and school supplies. When we received our KinderCone, I was amazed at all the goodies inside and my son was THRILLED with his new supplies!!"

Savvy Housewife says: "The KinderCone is a great way to celebrate the first day of first grade or kindergarten graduation. My daughter will have pre-K graduation next week and I told her her special gift, which includes a notebook for recording special memories for 1st grade and a cute plush KinderCone kitty cat, was to celebrate her officially being out of pre-K. This would be such a fun tradition to start with your family. I think it would be especially fun to fill your cone with little trinkets and candy on the first day of school each year during the elementary school years (in fact I may do that in mid-August when school starts for both my 3rd grader and kindergartner.)"

Red Sox Mommy says: "My beautiful little five year old was the lucky recipient of a KinderCone recently, again thanks to Mom Central and KinderCone. As you can see from the smile on her face it was a big hit! She loved it! Inside she found a little stuffed cat named Karli, a book to fill in exciting moments from her school year, pencils, temporary tattoos and a certificate. She had so much fun pulling out each item...She's getting very excited to start school in just a few months and this just added to her excitement!"

Mom Most Traveled says: "As a preschool teacher, I love this idea because it makes the first day of school something EXCITING instead of SCARY. I give the whole KinderCone philosophy, Celebrate School, two thumbs up!"

Because Nice Matters says: "I have recently learned of a neat tradition in Germany. It is called a Schultute. It is a cone shaped box filled with school supplies and treats that is given to a child on their first day of first grade. Kindercone was founded by Vivian Lie, who was raised in Germany, and is trying to bring this German tradition to the United States."

Composter Mom says: "The KinderCone company sent me a modern-day Cone to see and review. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of it; I'd expected something smaller. It's bright, colorful, and exciting: just the atmosphere to help a new student feel confident and enthusiastic about the coming year."

Gotcha Baby says: "The large, colorful cone is filled with school supplies, and a very fun journal called, Me, Myself & First Grade. You can personalize the cones by putting your child’s own favorite things. Check out www.kindercone.com to see all of the options to create the perfect gift for your kindergarten grad or beginning first grader. I know that MaM will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this surprise. It’s going to be tricky hiding the giant cone for the next year, but the look on her face will be priceless."

Mama Knows Best says: "Despite Ethan not being quite the age the KinderCone was intended for, he has absolutely fallen over in excitement about the idea behind the cone. He is looking forward to receiving a KinderCone after he graduates from Kindergarten and heads into First Grade! And while I know the contents of the KinderCone, I have not shared them with Ethan…We want it to be a total surprise to him when he reaches the age."

The Zen of Motherhood says: "I received a KinderCone to review (I plan to give it to my kindergarten graduating nephew; go, William!), and it is just the cutest thing. I was really impressed with the quality; this thing is not flimsy. The Karli the Cat is six inches tall and has its own little messenger bag. The Me, Myself, and First Grade journal is a great way to encourage kids to write and will make a really sweet keepsake. There is also room inside the cone to add a treat or two of your own. The KinderCone is a really clever, fun way to commemorate one of the big milestones in a child's life."

As avid readers (and bloggers!) ourselves, we all appreciate the value
of the written word. Yet convincing kids that reading is not just
meaningful – but actually fun – can sometimes pose a challenge,
especially as they get older and start to believe they read enough in
school. In fact, according to the 2008 Kids and Family Reading Report
by Yankelovich and Scholastic, despite 80% of parents wanting their
kids to read for fun, most kids claim there aren’t enough really good
books for their age group.

James Patterson has taken this issue to heart. A father himself, he
knows that one of the main obstacles for young readers is a lack of
books kids can truly connect with, those rare stories that draw you in
and keep you reading until the very last word. We can all remember the
joy of a great book from our own childhood; begging to stay up ten more
minutes to finish a chapter, then hiding under the covers with a
flashlight to read “just one more.” Patterson has made it his mission
to give this experience to children everywhere and instill in them a
love of reading.

To that end, he recently launched a new website, www.readkiddoread.com,
in order to give kids of all ages access to truly great books. Whether
you are still enjoying picture books with your baby or have an older
child reading at an advanced level, ReadKiddoRead acts as a resource
for finding the
best books. Each featured book, hand-selected by Patterson, includes a
synopsis, related themes, quotes from critics, links to find the book
in any number of locations (including local libraries), and even
similar suggested reads. In addition, the website provides resources
for finding book discounts and promotions, features interviews and
contributions from authors and celebrities, and even allows members to

Here's what MotherTalk reviewers are saying about TokBox:

Big Blueberry Eyes says: "We used Tok Box with the
grandparents and it was really easy to use. I like that there wasn't
anything to download. You just click on "call anyone" and then
"invite/add friends." If they're not already on your friend list you
click on "share URL" and it sends a link to that person's email. When
they click on the link it connects and you're chatting! The other
person doesn't even need to sign up and make an account."

Cutie Booty Reviews says: "TokBox is so convenient – I just send an email from Tokbox to my family
and friends with my user info. Once they sign up calling me is just a
click away. If I am away from my computer a video message can be left
for me to view later. After trying TokBox this weekend, I can tell you
that it will be getting a lot of use in the Cutie Booty household."

Just a Mom's Take on Things says: "It’s hard sometimes to keep in touch the way I’d like – and to be
able to share and show them how much the girls are growing and how much
they’re learning. However, staying in touch will get just a little bit easier, now that I’ve discovered Tokbox!"

Seven Dogs and a Baby says: "Go check out Tokbox for yourself I promise its pretty cool and the perfect place to start for those of you who have webcams but just don't know what to do with them yet."

A Bookworm(mom)'s Diary says: "TokBox is free and easy to use; you simply sign up on tokbox.com and they

to use, even by people who are not as experienced internet users like
my mother."

The Rogers Family says: "Being far away from family and friends just got a little bit easier. tried to wrangle a toddler in front of a computer before, but it's less
than successful. How fun, then, to have the ability to get them
to say a few words in a video email? That's just one of the options
available with the program TokBox."

Moogies World says: "It's really simple to use (both of my girls, 10 and 12 tried it) and

Green & Clean Mom: I wrote about sleeping and being busy and mentioned how important time management is but I never really touched on how I manage my time. Today I’m going to share with you a little secret called, Qlubb. There’s calendars, planners and post it notes but those consume paper and waste resources. Maybe you or a member of your family is involved in some sort of club or group? If any of these apply, you’re all too familiar with the difficulties in trying to get one group of people together all at the same time. It’s almost impossible. It may take phone trees, phone calls, emails, and loads of reminders at meetings and yet things seem to fall to pieces quickly. You have to wonder if things can be easier…and they can be with Qlubb.
Dirty Little Secret: On Friday as Lovebug and I were driving to pick Ironflower up from preschool, I realized that I had forgotten about a playdate. A playdate that had started at 10:30 am. A playdate that we had completely missed. Since I had just been complaining about how much I disliked it when playgroup members signed up for playdates and then didn’t show, I felt like a complete asshole. Especially since the person I had been complaining to was the hostess of the playdate that I had just missed.
Spark Plugging: I know I just said today that we shouldn’t overcommit ourselves. And that’s true. But I also said that there are a number of things we’re all involved in because we want to or need to be. For example, I want to be the editor of the newsletter. My hubby wants to be the coach of our daughter’s soccer team. I want to organize the church picnic. Well, actually I don’t, but I’ve already committed to do so this year. Next time I’ll use one of my ten ways to say no! To read more, click here.

Just because we’re moms on the go, doesn’t always mean we travel
light. In fact, between the usual items (wallet, phone, keys), beauty
accessories, things for our kids (bottles, diapers, toys, changes of
clothes), papers, our laptops, a book, snacks for the road, and the
list goes on – we barely have room to fit all of the “necessities” in
our bags. And that’s without even considering daytrips to Grandma’s or
the beach!

Which is why I love Timbuk2
. These bags are way more
than stylish. They’re incredible roomy, feature compartments for
everything you need compartments for, and are so sturdy that they can
go, literally, anywhere, from the office or the classroom to the gym to
the beach – and even on a mountain climb!

The company has
everything from backpacks and messenger bags to computer cases and
totes, making them perfect for every member of your family. (I have a
feeling my husband and kids will be shopping for computer bags and
backpacks soon!) You can also buy a number of fun and useful
accessories, from cell phone holders to bike bags. Yet my favorite
thing about these bags (if forced to choose just one): they not only
come in a wide variety of fun and stylish colors and patterns, they can
be customized.

With
the “Build Your Own Bag” feature, you select one of five bag types and
then decide between numerous styles, mixing and matching colors on
different parts of the bag to create one that is uniquely “you.”
Honestly, I have never had so much fun with a bag, and I’ll never again
have to leave something home that I wish I had room to carry along with
me. A stylish bag that holds everything and goes everywhere is exactly
what every mom needs. For more, visit the website here.

Want
your own? Mom Central has one to giveaway! To enter to win your own
unique Timbuk2 bag, simply leave a comment below by Tuesday, August
26th. Good luck!
