Some ideas from the panel:

The Ohio system: It will take awhile to get there. SUNY online indicates that
online is where we will see integration first because there are fewer entrenched
ideas

We need to facilitate and verify student learning.

Technology enables us to focus on helping students make
meaning out of the world of information they have access to. Media enables
multiple means of expression.

Concern expressed about losing the commitment to liberal
arts education because of the emphasis on outcomes and the limited perspective
of education as an economic engine.

We should commit to the ideas that anyone in Ohio can get the
education they want wherever they want.

Can we have a system where, as Chancellor Fingerhut says,
institutions coordinate programs so there is less duplication and more sharing
across the state? Some programs need to be place specific because there are
regional needs.

Concerned expressed about the notion of self-paced learning.
Need to keep the social dimension of learning that cultivates critical
discourse.

Open entry open exit may be appropriate for developmental
education. In this arena students can begin at the appropriate level and build
foundational skills at their own pace to get them ready for higher education.

Students view college education as a commodity, they are
“buying” and education as a consumer choice or “right” rather than a privilege
or an achievement. More consumer oriented behavior will push us change or other
private entities like University of Phoenix will step in. If we become like Phoenix we will lose what is important and valuable to us: We are creating the citizens
of this state.

Students are burdened by debt so they are likely to welcome more efficiency and a quicker path to graduation and certification.

We need rich and robust faculty development. Students are far more diverse and faculty need support in meeting all of their needs and differences.

We can't assume we will grow enrollment through more online options. Those who need to come to college currently do not believe they are college material. This is an attitude issue that must be addressed.

Blending high school with community college and universities will help create a bridge to college enrollment for those who currently do not pursue higher eduction.

Ideas from audience questions

Faculty need to learn student skills with technology but we can't assume that students know how to learn with these tools.

Still too much lecture driven education. Most enjoyable classes are those that are participatory

Progress. One death at a time.;-)

When are we going to help k-12 educators get rid of standardized testing?

Is information technology literacy worthy of being part of our core curriculum? Curriculum is the responsibility of faculty and faculty must be engaged on this issue. We might want to look at general requirements but also discipline-specific literacies.

There is now more coordination at the State level with the Department of Development that may make more funds available to higher education.

Our funding system creates competition by basing it on enrollment. The system does not reward what we can do collectively. We also have a culture of competition and individualism. This is reflected in tenure and how we evaluate student learning.

Students have great pride in their schools and want to keep that identity. Students need to see how they can get a better education by selecting from many institutions while still keeping the local identity and tradition.

SCREEN CAPTURE PROGRAMS and USES

PROBLEM...need a ways to provide online feedback to students on multimedia projects
need to create tutorials for students about a variety of applications and online resources

Use
CamStudio--Open Source--screen capture FREE--some issues--not a smooth screen capture--keep them short with this tool due to tool limitations Record to SWF or AVI--simple --Does not work with VISTA!!

PROBLEM..need to show students how to solve math and scientific equations on a whiteboard
Use
LectureSCribe--Freeware Record your voice while you write on the whiteboard, you can copy and paste images, charts--simple to use record, play, change colors YES< WORKS WITH VISTA!! need to use a tablet or a Waycon(?) tablet and a Smartboard

PROBLEM-Need a screen capture utility to teach computer application course online
Use-
WINK-freeware--makes small Flash files, makes individual pictures so you can modify, you can narrate after you do the screen capture

Captivate-disadvantage-learning curve for product use is high--not a good tool for faculty due to learning the software and the time involved.

Camtasia Studio-has much of the functionality of Captivate without the cost-user friendly for faculty

PROBLEM:
-need to replace instructor PPT lectures with formate more appropriate for online delivery
-need tool that addresses multiple learning styles and is ADA compliant
-would like ability to include interactive elements and assessment

USE-Articulate
---faculty can do the work in PPT with voice capture in lecture or during PPT...can publish directly out of Articulate--ADA compliant--Grabs the notes out of PPT and puts on a tab for hearing impaired.--Print slide view into a PDF so students can print easily

Advanced Articulate-Interactive elements Articulate Presenter and Engage
Takes PPT to the next level--look like a FLASH developer with just PPT
Quiz module adds on
You can embed web objects within Articulate and the web page is active
Engage module adds on--Templates to do timelines, tab function
Less costly-PointeCast, but has limitations!
PROBLEM:
Need to easily create opportunities for students to interact with content (non-graded, fun)

USE-StudyMate 2.0 by Respondus --glossary, flashcards, fill in the blank, pick a letter, matching, crossword for lower level knowledge based info

PROBLEM:
need to create self assessment that exists outside the CMS (must provide feedback about specific responses)
USE: Hot Potatoes-free-crosswords, assessments, feedback etc....produces to an HTML file and can print out results--provides individual feedback on questions

PROBLEM:
need application to replicate the peer review process used in F2F english courses (allow for simultaneous editing, would like to include chat)
USE: Google Docs--supports MS Office, collaborative way to work on documents synchronously--WORD, EXCEL or PPT Google Docs is really a wiki

PROBLEM
Need for low cost video conferencing solution for office hours, advising, presentation, group work
USE FM--Flash Meeting --Flash based meeting solution

PROBLEM:
need synchronous virtual meeting space for online courses and meeting, need meeting space with whiteboard, audio and chat for online math tutoring
Use-ElectaLive- 60 seats $8100 use for tutoring! issues with slow response

PROBLEM
need to find method for online students to practice interviewing skills, need more effective method than email for troubleshooting
Use THE TELEPHONE!!

Christopher Keesey and Muriel Ballou--Ohio University without Boundaries
An innovative wing of OU that parters with industry to design and deliver engaging learnig experiences for professionals and adult learners. Involved in non-credit training programs using Second LIfe...

Let's take a look at some of the context for learning. Increased importance of context vs. content to a learning experience. OU is seven island on the adult grid, 3 islands in the teen grid--handle the day to day permissions and parcels for the use of SL. Specific interest in the context of creating better learning experiences and better leaning. Experimenting with learning kiosks...they are very focused on using the campus for LEARNING! Just what I have been looking to learn about!

FYI-Second LIfe was officially launched in 2003--3 dimensional, user-defined world of general use in which people can interact, play and LEARN. Chris showed a nice J curve of the growth of SL, also attributes to the performance and technical issues with SL.

SL in the proper context is one of 50+ Virtual World Platforms--Barbie Girls, Club Penquin, Forterra Systems, GAia Online, Habbo Hotel, Neopets, the Sims Online, Whyville, Zwinktopia. The 3-D Internet is inevitable--call for interoperability. We will be able to bring assets into other VWs.

Historical context 1991-Internet of Prodigy 2007 Second Life

Content in Context--What are people saying? Quotes from relevant people about SL. Content can be found in "external human hard drive" and other online sources. "Construction of context is the hallmark of a broadly education person." "If content is king then context is the kingdom."--Buzz phrase!

Which context are we talking about? Orienting, Instructional or Transfer "payoff" context---we are talking about the instructional context but are aware of the other contexts. SL adds social, cultural, physical, and psychological experiences. Idea of creating an alternative culture for business travelers to understand how to operate in the real culture before actually traveling there and interacting. " This is what it might be like when you travel to China." for example

People who are autistic can actually function in a VW better than in a real world. Beginning to use VW to help people experience cultural and social aspects of the real world to prepare them for real world experiences.

Internships are actually being done in SL.

Ultimately, the burden is still on the instructor to create that charge that will drive inquiry. This is the greater context of your learning. Burden still on the instructor to facilitate student reflection--SL is very much a synchronous experience and so will need to send students out to access message boards and other asynchronous tools.

SL is an early stage 3D Internet app. Difficult to deliver a TOTAL experience--important for instructors to properly frame the experiences.

The session grew out of the need for better quality courses online. Many people take what they have and just put it online. There is much we can do online that we cannot due in the online classroom, this is an opportunity to do things I cannot do in the f2f classroom.

She shared that she teaches her course different online than she does in the classroom. Think about the way you think learning happens in your world...how do students learn? Learn by doing, although some students (adult learners still like to learn passively).

Drop out rates for online courses is about 1/3.

DIME--organizing scheme for this workshop is the metaphor for online learning.
Things can change on a "dime"--dynamic
Smallest coin that is of any use at this time. It is tangible and of value.

Design
Interaction
Media
Evaluation

Think about a metaphor about your students and how they learn. Our table had metaphors for students shopping at a mall and gathering information at different locations and in different ways with the teacher as facilitator.

Mall Metaphor Supports:
Learner Choice
It is a social place
It is an environment
Peer and instructor support

Other metaphors:
Building a House
  Foundation-Learning Styles
  Rooms-Content
  Roof-Success at college and career

Design of Instruction

Target Audience

Learning Objectives--make these behavioral and observable

Instructional Methods

Her Instructional Design Metaphor
    Office environment--upload resume, upload photo
                                   detailed job description (syllabus)
                                   apply to Learning Services Consultants

Check computer requirements, are you ready, resources--Assess if they are ready for resource based learning

Students are HIRED! Congratulations you are hired! Learn how course is organized, how do I move through the course. Course colleagues-instructor as manager (audio file)--students load pictures of themselves and post bios

Students go to WORK! Set up like an office--metaphor sets up a visual environment and students progress through folders as this is a job. Lessons start out with an intro, video is by linking out to YouTube, then they take a Knowledge Check that they take until they get it all right, things are adaptively released so students must go through the steps, move on to applying organizational theory and writing. All nine lessons are consistent in structure.

WaterCooler is there for discussions and collaboration.

    Learning Library for Resources.

What are some ways students could authentically practice the skills that work within your online course environment?

Great handouts and structure for those who need to understand what to think about when you design online classes!

Talked about the progression from film, TV, Internet and Web 2.0 tools...are we overwhelmed yet??
Key is about the learning--YEAH!

ISTE Standards that came out last year will now be required for teachers to integrate into their classrooms-"What student should know and be able to do to learn effectively in a digital world"

We discussed the question: Why use digital tools for teaching and learning? Meet learning styles, differentiation, engagement (students are bored out of their gourd!) digital literacy, living in digital society so classroom would be isolated if not used.

Some tools are better than us!

Differentiating instruction

Extend learning beyond the walls

Tell me I forget, teach me I remember involve me and I learn--Ben Franklin

Dale's Cone of Experience--Majority of what students remember is what they do!
Activity allows students to use more of their brain-brain research--connections in the brain=LEARNING!

We worked to contribute to the wiki of Today's Digital Tools for Enhancing Future Learning--Carrie will be developing a wiki for this presentation and compiling the information gathered.

Guskey's work-Model of Professional Development--Integrate and then will change--show examples of how it works!

Two Questions to ask when implementing new technologies: How can I use this in my teaching? How can my students us this in their learning? I also think we need to consider this question: What learning problems would be solved through the use of this technology and does it really impact student learning?

FREE TOOLS

Animoto Use for marketing, intros for websites, 30 secont

Jing--take pictures of desktop or videos of action on the screen--swf flash files

Show students on screen pics

Navigation

Explaining a diagram

Student use to show knowledge

VoiceThread-website to upload pictures, people can comment, or add own ideas--collaborative work on a graphic--connected space to converge the discussion

So here I am at the ODCE conference for the first time and have decided to blog my experiences since I encourage my students to do this when they attend conferences to add to their field experiences. One advantage I see to blogging is that you might remember and actually implement some of the great things you learn due to the online access versus having to dig out the old conference material in some obscure binder or actually still in the conference bag given at check-in! So this looks like a great place for a conference, everything is very accessible, not a far walk, eating and shopping close by and awesome sessions to look forward to!

OOpppsss, I am in the lobby and cannot hit the wireless from here so had to pay to access the Internet....hotels need to provide this for free since it is as essential as toothpaste!
