Introductory Alexander Technique Playshop with Andy Zavada

In a collaboration between Madrona MindBody Institute and Key City Public Theatre - Seattle actor and American Society of Alexander Technique Teacher Andy Zavada will be visiting Port Townsend and Fort Worden for a one-day introductory playshop.

About Alexander Technique
Alexander Technique is the ultimate in mind-body connection -- teaching us a way of thinking abouthow we use ourselves in movement, and how to change through our thinking. AT is taught in most acting schools around the world, and has been practiced by William Hurt, Kevin Kline, John Cleese, Jeremy Irons, and many others.

Recent British Medical Association research showed that Alexander Technique was the most effective approach to back pain compared to massage, medication and physical therapy.

This workshop will cover:
     • Brief historical background of F. M. Alexander and his discoveries.
     • Body mapping -- a functional understanding of our design.
     • How and why we mis-use ourselves.
     • Learning to not do what doesn't serve us.
     • Demonstrations and answering questions.

About Andy Zavada
Andy is a working actor and AT teacher in Seattle. He has been practicing Alexander Technique for over twenty-five years, and completed the three-year teacher training program at the American Center for the Alexander Technique in New York in 1987. He is former President of the American Society of the Alexander Technique.

2009 Free Fridays at the Fort

For more than two decades, Centrum has produced a free summer concert series for visitors, residents, and families in Port Townsend. From its humble beginnings downtown to its roomy home on the lawn outside the Fort Worden Commons, the series is an excellent way to sample what happens at Centrum in the summer.

We call it Free Fridays at the Fort, and we hope you can join your friends for our 2009 performance series, sponsored by the Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader. Seating is provided (or bring your favorite blanket), local and sustainable food is available, and the entertainment is free.

Each performance starts at noon on the lawn at the Fort Worden Commons, and is weather dependent (except for August 7, which will be rescheduled if needed).

A Sound and Movement Feast to Welcome Summer

at Madrona MindBody Institute at Fort Worden - your sanctuary for conscious dance and living

Awaken your body-as-instrument! Discover new territory. Invite your creative self to experiment, play and bloom in an encouraging, “failure-free” environment. In this three-hour 'playshop' we’ll dance our Song and sing our Dance. Experience toning, presence-chanting, sonic layering, body-soundscapes and vocal/gestic improvisation; learn skills to increase vocal health, breath techniques, ease and freedom of expression. Everyone — at every level of experience — is welcome. The day closes with celebration, and integration, as we create sonic and visual touchstones to carry into summer.

Sliding Scale $30 - $55 - some work-trade scholarships available.

4 pm                Presentation: Tsunamis in Puget Sound
NOAA's Chris Moore will present an overview of how tsunamis are generated, the physics of ocean waves, and the history of past tsunamis. He will share the results of a study done in Puget Sound, and describe a demonstration of the forecast system being developed at NOAA National Center for Tsunami Research for implementation at NOAA's National Tsunami Warning Centers. Talk will begin in the Natural History Exhibit at 4 pm and is free.

Get a chance to learn about how scientists study orcas by listening to our active hydrophone research station and get more information on how you can listen for orcas from your home computer.

the Cable House Canteen

will re-open for the Summer with new items, lower prices, and a new menu!

Hand scooped ice cream returns and we've got an ESPRESSO MACHINE.

We'll have a real, hand formed Oregon Country Beef mini-burger available on a Pane D'Amore whole wheat bun. Of course, hot dogs, chicken, and fish and chips return--all improved.

As usual, you can expect ice, firewood, lots of beverage choices, and sundries. We've added more natural products and brought back some seating. Come on down and take a look!
