Perhaps one of the most ironic moments of the 2008 RNA Annual Conference held in Washington last week was the fact that during the panel discussion on blogging, there was no internet access. Therefore there was no live blogging or Twittering.

However, internet was not needing to capture the speeches on camera. The panelists were Manya Brachear of the Chicago Tribune who writes The Seeker for the Tribune as a part of her work as religion reporter. Terry Mattingly also spoke, Mattingly is one of the key contributors to GetReligion, a blog critiquing mainstream coverage (or lack of coverage) of religion. Andrea Useem, freelancer and creator/author of ReligionWriter.

Here are videos of their talks as well as an the introduction by moderator Kristen Campbell of the Press-Register.

The second panel of the day is a panel on Islam. The panel features three people with different perspectives and information and is moderated by Matthai Kuruvila.

The Paul Barrett, a journalist and author of "American Islam: The Struggle for the Soul of a Religion" led off the discussion with a look into the writing of his book. Barret described his book as a compilation of shorter stories looking at different aspects of the Islamic faith.

The second speaker is Shahed Amanullah, editor-in-chief of Altmuslim.com, a Web site on Islamic news he founded in the aftermath of 9/11.

He presented three models of sourcing Islam the old way:

The dissident

The expert

The spokesperson

Amanullah then presented new models of sourcing Islam:

Ordinary Muslims who are active within their community

Next generation Muslim community leaders

Growing number of Muslim journalists and commentators

Amananullah explained why the population may be reluctant to talk with journalists. Among his points were the fact that Muslims are tired of being reported on like zoo animals or only being asked to comment on foreign stories or when there is a problem and for basic stories.

After looking at the reasons for reluctance Amanullah suggested ways for reporters to build a relationship with their local community. One of his techniques was for reporters to go out and attend events as well as using his new sourcing techniques.

The third panelist is Dalia Mogahed who serves as executive director for the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies. Mogahed has organized the largest survey on Islam which included over 40 predominately Islamic country as well as some European countries with Islamic minorities.

Mogahed noted that in the 1990's 73% of pictures in American press of Muslim women depicted the women as passive.

Mogahed also looked at other data concerning misconceptions of the Islamic faith and the role of Muslim men and women in society.

The Gallup Center for Muslim Studies will have a comprehensive survey released within the month on Islam in America.

First up on Saturday is a panel on the "Challenge of Catholic Schools." Michael Paulson of the Boston Globe is moderating with panelists Mark Gray form CARA or the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate and Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl of Washington D.C.

Gray examined some statistics from his center on the current state of Catholic schools across the country. The data shows a variety of interesting trends. Gray noted that primary schools have been closing at a higher rate than Catholic high schools.

Gray also looked at the fact that since the baby boom the number of babies baptized annually or pool of potential students has remained consistent. However, while the number of students and schools has been dropping the waiting lists have increased.

The study also looked at comparisons of religious practices of students who attend Catholic schools vs. public schools. Students who attended Catholic schools have place a higher value or respect for the sacraments. Students attending Catholic schools are more likely to consider a vocation to the priesthood or religious life.

Archbishop Wuerl is speaking on the financial challenges he has faced as archbishop. Catholic school tuition does not equal the cost of educating the students, therefore the schools must rely on other sources of funding.

The archbishop is describing his well-known tuition assistance program which was a unique and innovative approach to funding Catholic schools. The program works with the local community to help fund the schools as Archbishop Wuerl noted, if the schools were to close the local community would have to come up with at least an additional $385 million to educate those same youth.

The program began under the direction of then archbishop, now Cardinal

In 2005, under Archbishop Wuerl the program was reworked and included the opening of one of the new "Cristo Rey" model of Catholic secondary education.

In Pittsburgh, where Archbishop Wuerl previously served, he set up the Extra Mile Education foundation which brought together different faith groups to help keep schools open in the center city.

For Archbishop Wuerl, the fact that the increasing number of non-Catholic students attending Catholic schools is a demonstration of the value of Catholic schools.
