Money Matters - A Philosophical Reflection on the Need for Money!

This week I was entering a nearby Super Stop & Shop saw a woman in her 80's bagging groceries at stop and shop. Her hands went slowly and they were shaky and unsteady. The customer was a young girl in her twenties and was a bit impatient and a manager was nearby watching the woman who was bagging the groceries.

The customer immediately took over the bagging of the items and quickly started filling bag after bag with items almost pushing the old woman out of the way to get a new bag each time. The manager came over to the customer and quickly offered to help put the groceries in the bags for the woman. The manager bagged the customer's remaining items quickly, the cashier took the customer's money and the customer raced off with her shopping cart to her car and her next errand.

The 80 year old woman just stood there beside the manager. I could only imagine how she felt after being treated so poorly. The manager patted the woman on the back and told the 80 year old woman not to worry about it, that there are always impatient customers and that she would get better at bagging the groceries.

These days I'm just as impatient as the next person and I tend to use the new Self-CheckOut lanes as much for their novelty as for my own impatience. As I was checking out, I noticed the same woman come over and bag the groceries of another person who was rather patient. However, the 80 year old woman was not steady or adept at the task and by the end of the customer's transaction the customer left in "huff" and showed her clear frustration at the 80 year old woman's abilities.

This time the manager did not give the woman a pat on the back or words of encouragement. The manager just shook her head and walked away.

It was enough to see the disheartened look on the 80 year old woman's face. I had barely seen the glimpse of a smile from her the whole time I was in the store. I really don't think I needed to ask the question because I'm quite certain I know the answer. She works not because she wants the interaction with people and enjoys it, but because she needs the money. Too many of our elderly end up in this position. No matter what anyone cares to tell you, money matters!

Someday I too will be 80 years old (if I am blessed to live that long) and so will you my dear reader. Will you be bagging groceries at the local Super Stop & Shop because you need the money?

We have our whole lives to provide for ourselves and to prepare for our golden years. You'd think we have enough time but many of us are ill prepared. Many of us don't realize that the Social Security System in the United States is collapsing and with it goes any miniscule hope for security to care for ourselves and preserve our independence if we happen to live to age 100 or more.

Yes, money matters because we need it to survive, to pay bills, to enjoy life or even simply to survive long after our meaningful working years have passed.

All it takes is a dream. All it takes is some motivation. All it takes is some action. All it takes is one good idea.

Money matters because the quality of your life matters. Don't wait until it's too late. Plan now. Act now. Build Wealth Now...and Guarantee Yourself a Future that doesn't include bagging groceries at Super Stop & Shop in your 80's because you need the money.
