William Lee and Rick Patrick are the co-creators of “Talking Stick,” a performance series that is part of the increasingly popular storytelling movement
where people stand up before a live audience and tell stories. I know
Master Lee (his stage name) and Mr. Patrick because we play poker
together, and I’ve noticed something interesting about them: As
experienced storytellers, they are so familiar with spotting
exaggeration and lies that they can quickly identify a bluff in a poker
game.

It is well established that being a good storyteller is a useful skill in careers
(and not just for journalists and poker players). We need to tell
stories all the time — to position ourselves in the job market, to
pitch a new business idea to investors, to explain why a failure was actually a success, and so on.

I recently attended a “Talking Stick” show and sat down with Master
Lee and Mr. Patrick to learn some of the techniques they use to tell
good stories. Here’s what I learned:

1. Keep it simple. The brain gets overwhelmed when trying to process too much information.

2. Openings and closings are very important. When Master Lee and Mr.
Patrick organize their shows, they make sure to begin and end the
evenings with their strongest material since this is often what stays
with the listener. That is the same reason skilled public speakers
often memorize the beginning and ending of a speech but allow
themselves to improvise more in the middle.

3. Be mindful of your story’s spine. If your story has six parts,
all six parts must be essential. Beware of tangents: if something goes
too far astray, you will probably lose your audience’s attention.

4. Make sure not to alienate your audience. When speaking about
delicate subjects or things that have the potential to offend,
carefully plan your approach. Mr. Patrick tells a story about a
pedophile priest in his hometown, but he has crafted the story in a way
that draws listeners in before he reveals the sensitive details. “When
I was 15, something happened in my hometown that you don’t mention,” he
begins. Later he draws the audience in further by adding, “You all know
you had one in your hometown, too.”

5. Tell the truth. According to Mr. Patrick and Master Lee, if you
are not telling the truth, listeners will know. Even stand-up comics —
who are permitted exaggeration — perform best when their material stems
from the truth. Failure to make comfortable eye contact (usually by
looking away or looking too long) or providing too much information are
two common tip-offs that someone is not telling the truth. These might
come in handy for calling someone’s bluff at the poker table. But in
business, things can be a little more subtle. “A certain amount of
lying is ingrained in the business world,” Mr. Patrick said. “We’ve all
heard ‘everything is fine’ right before the company’s demise.” In those
instances, it’s a good idea to look for an excess of jargon. Remember,
good stories can be told in simple language.

When we prepare for a public speech, we focus on our speaking: the
words, the sounds, the phrases...and work hard to get everything "just
so". But when we get up in front of people and actually begin
speaking, we discover that...we have a body! And people are looking at
IT instead of our carefully made words! Sounds, words, and phrases are
fine for books, but public speaking is VISUAL. What do we do with our
body so we don't look like a fool in front of all those people?

Tim Wilson, Distinguished Toastmaster and finalist in Toastmasters
District 30 evaluation contest, is aware of these issues. "I have seen
a lot of people get up and give their speeches over the years," says
Tim. "And the one thing I have noticed again and again is people not
using their body effectively while speaking. There are three types of
body movements to keep in mind while speaking: Action movements,
Interconnection movements, and Mental movements. Each of these three
types of movements has a different purpose. Action movements help us
tell a story, Interconnection movements help us relate to our
audience...and get our audience to relate to us. Mental movements help
the audience "get inside our head" and understand where our speech is
going."

Tim's DVD "Moving With Purpose: The Speakers' Workout Video" ( http://www.geocities.com/wilsontctc/MWP/MWP_flyer.pdf
), is designed to target these three speaking areas and make anyone a
more effective, interesting speaker. His DVD can be purchased at every
Extreme Toastmasters meeting or you can contact Tim at wilsontctc@yahoo.com to make alternate purchasing arrangements.

9 days, 22 hours, 59 minutes, and 3 seconds…2
seconds..1 sec..

On April 9th, I will have completed my 100 Day Challenge.<u1:p> </u1:p>

My First 100 days of the Year 2008.

For the most part, I have kept this to myself and
wondered what results I would get.<u1:p> </u1:p>

Shockingly, I found that I could have done better!

I had off days and didn’t keep my personal promise in
various areas.<u1:p> </u1:p>

Call me
human. Human Rocky Romero.

I even broke one of the rules: not allowed to be sick.
I got sick for a week with a cold. Cold winters in
Chicago
, you know. <u1:p> </u1:p>

Unreasonable? Yes.

So what?

I’ll rest after the 100 Day Challenge on April 9th.
I don’t know how long I’ll rest. I may never do the Challenge again. It’s up to
me. Although, I missed on many of my targets, I still loved it!<u1:p> </u1:p>

Loved the personal challenge. Loved the possibilities.
Loved that I am still in the game. The game of living. Feeling more alive.

In moments of indecision, this helped me to just do it.<u1:p> </u1:p>

So what are the rules?

You decide the specifics.<u1:p> </u1:p>

Here are the general
rules:

• Personal Improvement: Physically, Mentally,
Emotionally, Financially, Spiritually <u1:p></u1:p>

• Business Improvement: Contacts made,
Revenue generated <u1:p></u1:p>

• Keep track of 100 days on the Wall Calendar
<u1:p></u1:p>

• No excuses allowed, hold off on accidents
and illness, be unreasonable <u1:p></u1:p>

• Read daily pertaining to Your Business

That’s
it!

That could be a lot or not enough. You fill
in the details.

Tracking is done on www.100DayChallenges.com

This is just for us.

Each member will have their own 100 Day
Challenge.

As it should be.

See
for yourself and see yourself in 100.

<u1:p> </u1:p>

Rocky Romero

http://www.buildingachampion.blogspot.com/

The speech as given is below. I kept the circular reference, but made
sure the audience knew that I was respecting the stay at home mom
position by my intonation.

To solidify my pacing and stop being so stagnated, I switched two
paragraphs from near my close up to the middle - keeping all of the
professional terms together instead of interupting it with my pushing
back at the world.

Craig Valentine had the whole audience shouting "GO!" after he did
"Ready Set" - just a half hour before I went on - so I thought why not
take advantage of Craig's energy and have them finish off my own ready
set go, that was already in my speech. It worked well - and by the
time I asked them "What do you think I should do?" it gave them
permission to yell out "Go for it!" - unexpected, but cool!

I definitely used my pauses more effectively - and still ended before
the red light. All in all a successful outing.

Glorious Victory - As Given at District 9 4-21-07

Glistening sweat trickles down my brow
Bulging muscles flex in anticipation
Chants of Ri Chard, Ri Chard, Ri Chard, fill the air
Just 50 yards separate me from Glorious Victory

Mr. Toastmaster, ladies and gentlemen, its my memory,
and I'll remember it ANY WAY I CHOOSE!
I was in the fifth grade when my parents entered me
into the Physically Disabled Olympics
I dedicated my recess to training my atrophied left leg
to work together with its healthier, right-footed partner
Determined to grasp the gold.

I lined up with 8 other boys
we had only a 25 yard lane
tag the wall and run back to the finish.
Help me out here:
Ready, set, (motion to audience who shouts GO!) (this was a piggyback
on Craig V's keynote about 35 minutes earlier, getting to them to do
the same) -
I took off in trademark hopalong style
hitting the turn
I saw I had no competition
Glorious Victory

Next up, the scooter race.
Square plastic boards with four wheels
Racers lay forward
Legs extended
Propeller arms pushing them down the same shortened track
Turning around is trickier on wheels
Approach the wall
Stick my hand out to the floor as a lynchpin
Slingshot myself back the other way

Before we started
I checked out my competition
Some wearing full-length leg braces
Being helped out of wheelchairs
A few being tied down to their board
Still, I raced
and won
Glorious Victory?

It was an early opportunity to accept honors and accolades from the
world
I was officially a champion disabled athlete.
Key word: Disabled.
Perhaps life would have been easier
If I had accepted my label and worn my crown.
At least easier for everybody ELSE.

With 6.7 billion people in the world
We have to identify and label each other quickly and simply
Its professional triage - who should we choose to have time for?
We answer the questions Who are you and What do you do
As if they were the same

Salesman. Secretary. Surgeon.
Architect. Mechanic. Stay-at-Home Mom

Sometimes these are labels we work for - we earn and take pride in.
Others are labels the world pushes us into and demands we bear.
Some are labels we write ourselves, and settle into.

Are you celebrating Glorious Victory?
Or have you just ended up, where you're at.
Pushed by family, friends, the demands of survival.
Successful, perhaps.
But is it success settled for, or celebrated?

What of the Stay-at-Home mom dreaming of being an architect?
The architect who really wanted to be a surgeon?
The surgeon longing to be a Stay-at-Home Mom?

I never competed as a disabled athlete again
Every time the world tried to push me in place, I pushed back
My Parents tried to protect me from risky activities, but I found my
own risks
Doctors refused to let me play basketball for my high school team
Despite my deep and deadly three-point-shot
So I shot hoops and ran the fast break on neighborhood courts
Tonight, my biggest disability doesn't even stem from my newly
acquired titanium toes
But my Ben & Jerry's Belly
My prostheticist won't give me a super-charged athletic ankle until I
lose 40 pounds
Many people tell me not to bother - just be glad I can walk.
What do you think I should do?

I want you to ask yourself this question:
Are you who you wanted to be?
Or who the world let you become?
I've never won another 50 yard dash.
I have no basketball trophies on the mantle
But I determine my dreams and destinations
And I celebrate every day.

Are you celebrating? I hope so.
If not - Why Not?
Declare to the world - and yourself - who you really are
Don't run the wrong race.
or wear the wrong crown.
Find risks, push back, and be who YOU want to be.
It doesn't matter if you start with small steps
Or take leaps and bounds (bound on stage)
But promise yourself you will always celebrate
Glorious victory!

When we prepare for a public speech,
we focus on our speaking: the words, the sounds, the phrases...and work
hard to get everything "just so". But when we get up in front of
people and actually begin speaking, we discover that...we have a body!
And people are looking at IT instead of our carefully made words!
Sounds, words, and phrases are fine for books, but public speaking is
VISUAL. What do we do with our body so we don't look like a fool in
front of all those people?

His DVD can be purchased at http://www.powervoices.com in the "Products" section.

I'm pretty picky about the techniques I recommend to attract great things into our lives. They must be simple, easy and very powerul. Well, I've just found another that I was so excited about, I had to bring it to you right away.

Heather will guide us through designing a "Statement of Desire", a technique used by Andrew Carnegie himself, and countless other highly successful people. But Heather has gone even further. Her version actually imbues our daily activities with powerful intention to attract our dreams.

Heather is a coach who is going places. Read her inspiring journey from low energy and overweight, to the supercharged dynamo she is today at her site: http://www.energyrichcoach.com/heathers_story.htm. More on Heather below as well.

I have participated in a Video Conferencing in connecting remote participants.

In that session, there were two offices connected, with about 30 total participants.

Everything from a technology standpoint was smoothly conducted. There were no delays in video or sound.

I am in great anticipation for it to appear at the individual home/office level. The reality is that it is still in development for productive usage. Until then, the most reliable and proven method is still the phone (audio) conference. Even the webinars are still in the developing stages and can have its glitches.

With the advent of skype, many can connect inexpensively on a global scale to hear and participate in a session. Recently, the announcement of skype video will propel me to check it out for personal and commercial uses. Video, more than just sound, still has the focus on how one looks & presents, in addition to the message. This will hold many people back from participating initially, and then there will be those that will "dress up" for the video.

Audience? Credibility or Position? or Delivery?

Would MLK's "I Have a Dream" be as good a speech if it was delivered by Bob Jones, middle class white guy, to a small group of people in Minnesota?

George Bush has the Position, and the built in Audience, but does his Delivery diminish his impact? Was Clinton's great Delivery hindered by his failing Credibility in the wake of Lewinsky?

Rich Hopkins - ATM-G

www.richhopkins.net

Having recently viewed a documentary on Gandhi, I made note of his
presence, and how he presented his message to a variety of audiences.

While it is tempting to rank delivery with content as most important
for Toastmasters, the truth is more apparent by "following the money"
or the response by the audience. The audience will vote with their
feet and ears (as in India) or their money (as in the western culture).

Gandhi or MLK or Lincoln gave messages that resonated with the audience
for a deeper, purposeful meaning. All three speakers had the innate
purpose of freedom for mankind when they spoke.

Gandhi developed his audience with his actions and convictions. Gandhi
also was a prolific writer to create credibility. Gandhi had a
delivery style that could be considered his own by speaking with his
shirt off and commanding attention with his universal message of non
aggression.

So a deep purpose trumps personality (Clinton) or position (Bush) to
have a great audience.

I just uploaded a couple of videos to Google Video.

The first is a 50 minute session I gave at a seminar on unleashing
your personality. It was recorded at a web video seminar as you'll
be able to tell from the way some of the ideas are framed.

This will give you a look at my conversational style and humor
based in content. The video personnel missed the first 10 minutes.

The second is a 4 minute clip on Preparation H3. Three things to
think about as you prepare your speech or presentation.

Goal Reaching:
=============
Think you might have a tough time staying focused and reaching your
goals in 2007? Check out the attitude of this young man!! We can
all learn from him...

If you are interested in a program to help you with personal
achievement consider the following strategic planning resource from
Goals Guy, Ryan Blair.

Audio Answer: How to Think Faster:
============================
Recently I got a question about processing quicker. Thinking fast
on your feet. Here's the audio answer. It's about 20 minutes.

Toastmaster Clubs:

Spokane Falls #6381 - President
Lunch Bunch #3640 - VP Membership/PR
Evergreen #486 - Club Coach

From www.RichHopkins.net -

Perspective, Passion & Persistence are the guiding forces to creating a life of joy and authentic success. From his childhood days as Dickie Jr. to his present-day role as a husband, and father of six, Rich continues to live life with a steadfast, never-say-die attitude.

In 1983, doctors told Rich that by thirty he'd be in a wheelchair if he didn't slow down and prepare for a life behind a desk. Determined to live on his own terms, he almost proved the doctors right. At 37, after a full life of sports, outside sales, and speaking, Rich woke up unable to walk. Undeterred, on April 25, 2006, he underwent elective amputation below the left knee, and is back on his feet sharing his message of determination and hope with the world.

Rich has experienced tremendous successes and overcome crushing setbacks. Drawing from all areas of his life to share how to recognize and avoid the pitfalls we all come across, he also motivates audiences to see the success we've all experienced, but often are unable to acknowledge and celebrate.

Rich brings humor, insight, and inspiration to his audiences, whether he is speaking on personal motivation and goal setting, the intricacies of sales and customer service, self-promotion and marketing, family dynamics, or coaching speakers of every type.

"Your message on leadership was inspirational to all of us in attendance. I have already noticed an effective change in attitude to actually "lead" those they supervise and not just manage. I am personally integrating the ideas you taught to build a better working environment for all of us! Thanks again!" - Roger Rife, VP/Regional Operations Manager, Countrywide Home Loans

Hello,
My name is Mike Charton. January will be my sixteenth anniversary in Toastmasters. I am a writer with my first book coming out in the Summer of 2007. It is about Sherlock Holmes nemesis, Professor Moriarty from Moriarty's point of view.

The blog is http://www.holmesvsmoriarty.blogspot.com I have a guestbook people can sign and I can keep them abreast of publication.

I am also working to build a speaking career. I have several topics can speak about.

Using the Internet Carefully: I began using the Internet in 1993. Working in libraries I trained kids and
seniors in how to get gems from garbage with websites and how to be safe.

How NOT to Get Arrested. At the age of 49, I was arrested for the
     first time.

What I want to teach people
is keeping your cool and knowing how much you have to lose if you do lose your
cool.

The Rise of China. I was an Asian Studies major and have
     taught courses about China. What
does it mean to the rest of us.

Public Speaking for Shy Writers. I have done this for several
groups. I write myself and have
seen what writers go through when they get published and have to do book
signings and work on their publicity. Most publishers do not help with your publicity any longer. You need to sell your book.

The Anti-Borat! I work with a Sister City Group between Tucson and Almaty,
Kazakstan. This is a growing area
     for business. Learn about the
