I've been thinking a lot about honeymoons lately. No! I'm not getting married, but one of my best buddies is. He and his beautiful bride-to-be are on a pretty tight budget, too. So romance on a shoestring is going to have to be their thing.

To help them out a bit, I've been sharing some ideas I've come across. I've also shared some ideas I've invented all on my own on various getaways through the years.

Here are my five best ideas presented so far to help them enjoy the romantic honeymoon of their dreams without having to take out a loan:

Honeymoon registry: This is a neat one I came across while surfing the Net. There are ways to set up a honeymoon registry just like a gift registry. In lieu of gifts, guests help sponsor portions of the big getaway. From dinners out to rooms at the Ritz, guests can help pay for as much or as little as they'd like, taking some of the burden off the couple.

Bed and breakfasts: These wonderful little hotels generally include all the right stuff for romance with at least a meal a day included, too. Depending on the season involved, they don't necessarily cost and arm and a leg either. They can be found in almost any destination in the world, too.

Cruises: These can be a lot more affordable than many realize. Since they tend to be all-inclusive, a honeymoon can have all the necessary ingredients for some serious romance without a huge bill at the end of the stay. (This is a wonderful way to look like a big spender, too, without actually having to be one. I know.)

Mountain retreats: From affordable cabins to upscale resorts, the natural beauty of the mountains is one of my favorite backdrops for romance. There's just something so liberating about getting away from it all with just your sweetheart, a fireplace and the great outdoors to enjoy. Even a cabin stay can be dressed up for some serious romance when champagne, candles and massage oils come into play.

The right stuff anywhere: The real key to a romantic dream honeymoon or any fantastically romantic getaway anytime or place is to have the right ambiance set. It's not about the room, the location or the expense involved, it's about the mood, the time alone and romance being in the air. When two people in love focus on each other and worry about nothing else, magic happens.

As much of a fan of online dating as I am, there's a new way to meet other singles that really has my attention. Speed dating is exciting, it's fast-paced (as the name suggests) and it's just an all around great way to check out perspective dates or just hook up with potential new friends.

I went to my first speed-dating event the other night and I have to admit I'm hooked. The atmosphere is lively, everyone's over 21 and the time allotted is just enough to see if there's enough chemistry between two people to go any further in establishing a connection.

The concept behind speed dating involves putting a bunch of singles in the same room. Whether it's at a country club, night club or restaurant, the guys or gals (depending on the format) move around the room from table to table meeting new singles, asking them questions and seeing if something more could come from one of the pairings.

Basically, it boils down to 20 or so mini-dates in a single evening. As you work your way around the room, based on the timer, you get to talk with a bunch of new ladies (or men) on a one-to-one basis. If something sparks, you're free to pass on your telephone number.

The event I went to had a "score card" so we could keep track of who we'd like to get to know even better. I've heard that not all events use this format, but the basic idea of meeting many people in a short amount of time is generally pretty consistent.

I meet a real cutie that was an absolute blast to chat with. Who knows, it could turn into something big!

When the bar scene doesn't do it and finding other singles is hard to accomplish, I'd have to say I recommend giving speed dating a try. It's fast, it's easy to meet people and it is just plain fun. It sure beats trying to talk over a really loud band, too!
