Setting Job-a-matic Backfill by O*NET Code

When you enter keywords into your backfill under Job Board --> Backfill Jobs in your Job-a-matic account, you may find that jobs that aren’t necessarily what you had in mind pop up in your results. This is because when you enter keywords into these backfill fields, your job site will display jobs with those keywords anywhere in your listing. So setting your backfill for “software engineer” without quotes will return results that include the terms “software” and “engineer”, and also might include jobs such as an electrical engineer or for a job that requires familiarity with software sales.

Setting your backfill by O*NET code is a way to make sure the jobs on your search site are the types of jobs that you are looking to include. The O*NET program is the primary source of occupational information in the US. Within the program, there is a system of job classification called the O*NET-SOC taxonomy (SOC standing for Standard Occupational Classification - a system created by the Bureau of Labor Statistics) which categorizes all occupations into 23 major groups, 97 minor groups, and 461 broad occupations.

For example, if you want to set your backfill to dental assistant jobs, you can type “onet:(31-9091)” into the “with all the words” search field, with 31-9091 being the O*NET code for dental assistants. Your results will return all jobs that are classified as dental assistants.

Not sure what the O*NET code is for the kind of work you’re looking for? Just got to the O*NET site and search by keyword. For a Simply Hired search, you must type in “onet:” followed by the six digit O*NET code in parentheses “(##-####)”. You may also shorten the code and add an asterisk to the end (example: “onet:(21*)” or “onet:(35-2*)”) to set your backfill as a broader search within that job category.

O*NET codes are considered singular search terms in the Simply Hired system, so you can use them in combination with one another using the OR function. So to set your backfill to civil engineer jobs (onet:17-2051) and electrical engineer jobs (onet:17-2071), enter the following into the backfill search field titled: onet:17-2051 OR onet:17-2071

With O*NET codes, you will be able to set much more specific backfill by job category!

Overview of Job-a-matic Backfill

What is backfill, you ask? If you find yourself low on job listings, you can add supplementary “backfill” jobs to your Job-a-matic board to give your visitors more relevant content. And with over five million U.S. jobs in Simply Hired’s database, we’re sure you’ll find backfill jobs that match the content of your site. Not to mention, you will earn per-click revenue from clicks on sponsored job listings in the backfill results.

Optimizing your backfill
After logging into your Job-a-matic account, navigate to the Job Board tab in the dashboard and select Backfill Jobs. Here you can edit the backfill settings of your job board.

Before you start editing the search query for backfill, make sure you have “Always Show Backfill” selected, otherwise backfill jobs will not appear below your posted jobs.

You may then determine the number of jobs that you’d like to appear per page of your results, which includes jobs posted to your board as well as backfill jobs. It is recommended that a publisher generally show between 15-25 jobs per page.

Once backfill is selected, you’ll then find a number of fields where you can enter search terms to set preferences. Job backfill can be as customized or as general as you like. Keep in mind that your backfill is based on a combination of ALL fields to make one query, so if you find that your backfill is empty or is only showing a handful of jobs, you will need to broaden your search. Also, you must apply either a location or at least one keyword, or both for backfill to appear.

The next step is to enter a location if you want to show only jobs from a specific area. This is an optional field; leaving the location blank will search all jobs in the U.S. Otherwise, you can enter a city and state, or a zip code to show jobs from that location. On this note, do not enter terms such as “USA”, “East Coast” or any locations outside the U.S.—doing so will not return results.

You then have the option to enter keywords to narrow down the backfill that appears. To help you decide which keywords should go where, here is an overview of the backfill query field options:

Backfill Search Field	Translation
With all the words	Pulls only job listings that include all of the words you enter in this field anywhere in the listing (title, location, job description, etc.)
With the exact phrase	Pulls only job listings that include the phrase you enter. Quotations surrounding the phrase entered are not necessary.
With at least one of the words	Pulls any job listings with any of the words or phrases that you enter. Phrases meant to be seen as a single term should be put in quotation marks.
Without the words	Removes any job listings with the words or phrases indicated here. Phrases meant to be seen as a single term should be put in quotation marks.
Within job title	Pulls only job listings with the words or phrases indicated only in the job title of the listing. Searches for multiple job titles can be done by including “OR” between titles. Multiple word job titles will need quotation marks.
Within company name	Pulls only job listings at the company you enter here. Searches for jobs at multiple companies can be done by including “OR” between company names. Multiple word company names will need quotation marks.

Other Helpful Tips:

Commas are not needed between search terms. A space between terms is sufficient.
Phrases meant to be searched as a single term should be placed in quotation marks (ex: “marketing manager”).
Job-a-matic backfill is currently US only. Entering a location outside of the U.S. will not show any backfill jobs.
Setting your location to “U.S.” or “USA” will not return backfill results. Leaving this field blank will automatically search all jobs in the U.S.
Backfill depends on a combination of all search fields. If your board is not returning backfill jobs, you may need to broaden your search by removing search terms.
You must set a location or at least one keyword, or both for backfill results to appear.

This month, we bring you two easy ways to give your job board a holiday facelift.

As you may know, our default job boards look like this:

Notice the light blue shading on every other job (red arrows) and the filters on the left hand side (green arrow)

Some users might prefer to hide these. Here's how!

To Remove the Shading

1) Login to your Job-a-matic account

2) Go to the “Job Board” tab, then “Colors & Type” subtab

3) Click on Custom Colors

4) In the box for “Shadow” type in “#ffffff”

5) Click on the “Save Changes” button

To Remove the Filters and Stretch the Jobs

1) Login to your Job-a-matic account

2) Go to the “Job Board” tab, then “Header & Footer” subtab

3) Cut and paste the following into the Header HTML box

4) ****Note that this will remove any previous header you had and any new header will have to be inserted here with HTML rather than using the upload feature in the "Name and Pricing" tab. ***

If you ever want to go back to the old design, just erase everything in the Header HTML box and save changes. You may have to revisit the "Name and Pricing" tab to reupload your header logo.

3. What have you found to be the biggest benefit of Job-a-matic?

We make extensive use of the analytics to guide our decision-making so that we can more effectively engage both employers and job seekers. For example, by reviewing all job listings posted to our job board in 2011, we realized that we could create a new product, discount packages, because many employers posted multiple job listings. Through the early success of this product, we chose to expand it even further by creating greater opportunities for additional discount options.

Mashable is a very social brand, so it was important to us to ensure that social sharing buttons are available on job listings. This allows employers and job seekers alike to share interesting job openings with their networks.

Mashable has a social and digitally savvy audience, so employers know that when they post their job listings with us that they are going to reach the right type of audience to fill their roles.

6. How do you promote your Job-a-matic board?

We promote the Job Board in a variety of ways including house ad units, links in our site's header and footer, promotional call-outs in our job-related Editorial coverage, a dedicated Twitter handle, https://twitter.com/#!/mashablejobs, job listings widget on the right rail of our site, and insertion of recent job listings in between editorial posts on our home page.

7. To what do you owe the success of your job board?

We treat the job board as a core part of our business and ensure that it is closely monitored on a daily basis. This attention to detail allows us to quickly understand what works, what doesn't, and make changes accordingly.

8. If you could pass along a single piece of advice to a new Job-a-matic publisher, what would it be?

Creating a successful experience takes time and effort. But, by leveraging the analytics, pulling various promotional levers, and understanding the needs of both employers and job seekers, will allow a new user to create a unique and valuable experience for their audience that can't be matched elsewhere.

Discount Codes and Packages!

Have you ever visited the “Promote” tab in your Job-a-matic account? If so, you might have seen our “Discount Codes” and “Job Packages” features. If not, then you’ve been missing out on a great way to market your job board and drive some extra revenue!

What’s the difference?

Discount Codes award a certain % off the job posting. Employers use it every time to get a discount. This is great for offering new posters or partners a discount of any kind.

Job Packages are single priced bundles you can sell for any price. Employers pay once and are given a unique code to enter each time to post the jobs.

How can I market the Discount Codes or Packages?

Use your Banner Logo Space!

The easiest way to market codes and packages is through your “Logo” banner space at the top of your board. You can change this in the “Name and Pricing” tab of your Job-a-matic account.

Create your banner in any image editing software (like Photoshop or even Paint) and upload it here.

Widgets!

Widgets are a great way to create more exposure, and place your jobs from your job-a-matic account on other sites! Each click on a widget is the same as a click on a job on your board, which means more revenue!

Where Do I Use Widgets?

Most of our Job-a-matic sites are linked to other third-party sites: a blog, personal website, company website, service website, etc.

There are great places to put a widget! A great example is The Web Strategist. This is a popular blog that has our job widget in the right hand rail.

Using CSS, the web designers have fully customized the widget to fall in line with the look of the website. If you don't know CSS, don't worry. Many of our partner websites use our widgets without any custom web design at all.

Widgets are completely adjustable. Here are some examples, from our stock widgets to some that have been tweaked completely.

We provide easy ways to tweak the colors, number of jobs, width, and even offer to post jobs by the visitors IP location!

How to Configure Your Widget

The easiest way to configure a widget is with our Customizable Widget (the first option)

Here you can change the number of jobs shown, any default keywords, colors, and location (including a "location by IP" setting!)

The best part is that you can "preview" all the changes you make on the right. The example widget will change based on the setting you change!

Once you're happy with the widget, copy the HTML and paste it into your website HTML code.

If you are using a blogging software program, you'll have to find out how you can add javascript to your site.

In this spotlight, we interviewed Jeremiah Owyang, who runs Web Strategy, about how he uses the Simply Hired Job-a-matic.

1. Tell us a little about your site/company/product.

I run a "Career Blog" which spans my career focus on Web Strategy: How companies connect with their customers using web technologies. I started this several years ago and was one of the first bloggers to cover social and big business. I kept at it, and it paid off. It's now an extension of my job as an Industry Analyst at Altimeter Group, where I'm one of the owners. I use it to glean research insights in the comments, build connections, and share my insights from my research.

2. Why did you decide to sign up with Job-a-matic?

I saw Guy Kawasaki do this, but I don't think he's using Job-a-matic now. I didn't want to put ads on my site, as I really want to add value to the readers, not hit them with ads. I want to be a trusted source of content and actually since I write for corporate web teams, they are often thinking about growing their careers. It's a good fit for my content, as I've discussed their career paths at great extent in my research and my frequent "on the move" posts where I discuss who's getting jobs in the industry.

3. Why did you pick Simply Hired over other options?

What? There are other options? Quick tell me who they are so I can cut a deal!

4. What have you found to be the biggest benefit of Job-a-matic?

It's turnkey, simple embed, and away we go. I configured it a few years ago, just once, and that's it. It's been running smoothly for years, and I get a check in the mail every month. At first it was beer money, and now it's keg money! Boo yeah!

5. Do you have any customization to your board? If so, please describe.

I had a developer adjust the CSS so it would match my style, which was key to have a smooth experience.

6. What is the biggest benefit of Job-a-matic for your audience?

This is great content, which fits my audience's career-minded objectives at work and their next jobs.

7. How do you promote your Job-a-matic board?

Oh yeah, this is a great question. An integrated perspective is key: I tweet out when new jobs are here to my near 100,000 followers on Twitter, and as I do regular "on the move" series shouting out who got jobs, I point to the job board, aligning the content. As you might imagine, my promotion of the job board attracts recruiters who know I have a large--but targeted--audience of web, business, and marketing professionals.

8. What kind of promotion do you give job listings posted to your board?

It's featured above the fold on my right hand column. I'm planning a redesign soon, and it will receive similar levels of awareness.

9. To what do you owe the success of your job board?

It took some patience, this isn't something that you can turn on and expect to be successful. You have to provide people with a reason to come to your site on a frequent basis and do integrated marketing.

10. If you could pass along a single piece of advice to a new Job-a-matic publisher, what would it be?

Build compelling content on a weekly basis (I've over 2,500 posts written nearly all by me) and be consistent. This gives people a reason to come back.

11. For fun, what do you do with the income generated from your Job-a-matic account?

Sooth my patient and beautiful wife with fancy gifts in exchange for my incessant blogging. Wait what? I could use the money for myself?
