Lemonhead Candy

So the Lemonhead. A sweet and sour nostalgic candythat now comes in a variety of flavors! Yes, friends- Appleheads, Grapeheads, Cherryheads, and even Orangeheads are now available. Ferrara Pan Candy Company are the manufacturers of this fantastic product, and their websitegives the low-down on how the "Lemonhead" (and friends) are made....

Lemonheads start as a hard candy center.

This center is made by blending corn syrup and sugar, then cooking it to 245 degrees Fahrenheit.

This cooked syrup is boiled in a vacuum chamber so that almost no water is left in the candy.

When the candy is removed from the vacuum chamber it is a clear, thick, semi-solid lump of candy.

Like bread dough, the candy is pulled and kneaded, folding air into the candy.

Next, the candy is formed into a rope.

Still flexible, the candy is pressed between two rollers forming the ball shaped candy centers.

The candy passes under a jet of air which brings it to room temperature.

Next, the candy centers are placed into large stainless steel pans.

The candy maker, called the "panner," adds a corn syrup and sugar mixture to the pan.

As the pan rotates, the solution sticks to the candy centers, giving them a sugary coating.

The Lemonheads grow as several layers of sugar are added to the pan. The sugar sticks to the centers and forms an outer shell.

Color and flavor are also added during the shell building process.

The candy is put into polishing pans and given a final glaze.

The finished Lemonheads are now ready to be packaged into boxes.

RAZZLES!

I am so excited that we now are selling RAZZLES candy! The first thing that popped into my mind was the movie 13 Going on 30! Do you remember when Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo were talking about RAZZLES! Now I must have been really lame because I had never heard of RAZZLES until I saw this movie!

I have been searching and searching for the scene in the movie where they say the famous tag line for the candy..."First it's a candy, then it's a gum. Little round Razzles are so much fun." But unfortunately I can't find it anywhere!

At least now I can eat them myself instead of watching the movie clip! So check out our RAZZLES! And take a little trip back in time!

Interestingly enough, taffy has been around since the 1800s. It became "Laffy" in 1971 as part of a movie spoof. The candy wrappers had jokes printed on them, and children would even send jokes to the manufacturer (Willy Wonka) in hopes of their riddle making it on the wrapper. Here at Southwest Candy we like to review our products and look at how they have changed over the years. One candy that keeps getting better and better is the Lifesaver.

Lifesavershave evolved over the years. The variety of flavors available and the textures even. From Hawaiian Fruit hard candy to assorted flavors in Gummie or Jelly Bean form. They even make swirl lollipops that are beyond delicious!

What Makes You Happy?

I had a great soul-searching weekend in Colorado Springs. My sister-in-law and I had a lot of discussions about life and what makes each of us happy.

If you were asked "what makes you happy", what would it be? Not influenced by people- so you can't say your family. And it has to be just about you- something simple. For my sister-in-law, it is a glass jar of colorful gumballs. Color brings joy to her life, and this glass jar sitting on the mantle of her fireplace reminds her of sheer happiness.

This is a time when people are looking for comfort. They are looking for reminders to stay positive. They need something to shift their thoughts into happy ones. Candy does this for us all.

The Undercover Boss has been spotted again!

Yep! He's back at work going undercover again! Only this time he has been spotted in the Chicagoland area. Why you ask? It's his hometown of course. His company Sweet Services has been in business for almost 40 years out there in the Midwest. Undercover Boss, Al Clements, has be to sure and check on this location to make sure all is running smoothly and his employees are happy with their jobs.

I wonder if they will impress him as much as his booming Southwest Candy location here in sunny Scottsdale, AZ? We'll have to see the interview with manager Pete Chronos who will be training Undercover Al to work in the warehouse.

Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Candy

I was walking through the warehouse the other day and came across a box I hadn't seen in awhile. It was my lucky day because in that box was a candy I had forgotten we sold- Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Candy.

I don't think enough people know about Baskin Robbins Ice Cream candy. Flavors of Mint Chocolate Chip, Vanilla, Raspberry, and Orange- truly are so delicious you won't believe it. They are Kosher! And they come as 1000 pieces in a 10lb case or 500 pieces in a 5lb case. The cost is approximately $.05 a piece and they make a great addition to any restaurant, hair salon, doctor's office, bank, or even dry cleaners.

I actually think anyone in retail or offering a service should provide candy as a "thank you" to their customers. For example- the car wash. Now when they wash your car, why not put a mint or a piece of candy on your seat after they have dried off the car? Hotels would be smart to put some candy on the pillow for their guests when they check in. And what about house cleaning services? Leave some candy for the homeowner before you leave to thank them for using your services.

"Thank you" goes a long way in the eyes of a customer. If you want the economy to bounce back, you need to do something extraordinary to lure your customers back in- candy is a sweet way to do it!
