Officials at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial will welcome nine of the top 30 players in the world golf rankings to Fort Worth for next week’s PGA Tour stop.

Topping that list will be Louis Ooshuizen, winner of the 2010 British Open and the No. 7 player in the world rankings. Also in the Colonial mix, finalized Friday, will be five of the world’s top 30 golfers who are not competing in this week’s HP Byron Nelson Championship in Irving: Hunter Mahan (No. 21), Bo Van Pelt (No. 26), Jim Furyk (No. 27), defending champ Zach Johnson (No. 29) and Rickie Fowler (No. 30).

Among next week’s competitors in Fort Worth will be three of the top eight golfers on the PGA Tour season money list and two of the top five. Matt Kuchar, the No. 12 player in the world rankings and No. 5 player on the season money list ($2,493,387), is the only confirmed Colonial competitor who cracks the top 15 in both lists. The top season money winner headed to Colonial will be Kevin Streelman ($2,572,989).

Kuchar and Oosthuizen, the Colonial headliners, will be among the starters in Thursday’s opening round in Fort Worth. They will be joined by several fresh names who joined the field Friday, including two-time major champion Angel Cabrera, 2008 Masters champ Trevor Immelman, Ryo Ishikawa, Sean O’Hair, Ricky Barnes, Luke List, Colt Knost and Colleyville resident Greg Chalmers.

Also joining the mix was Martin Flores, a former Oklahoma and Mansfield High School golfer, and Westlake resident Tag Ridings. Dropping off the Colonial list were Lucas Glover, Russell Henley, Billy Horschel and Jimmy Walker.

Officials at the HP Byron Nelson Championship will feature seven of the top 25 players in the world golf rankings at next week’s PGA Tour stop in Irving, based on the latest wave of commitments before today’s deadline.

The list includes Dustin Johnson, the No. 19 player in the world rankings who withdrew before Friday’s second round at The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. because of a lower back injury. Johnson, a significant gate attraction and one of the tour’s longest hitters, posted Friday on his Twitter account that he is “hoping to rebound” at the Nelson and still plans to compete in Irving.

Only four players in next week’s field at the Four Seasons Resort rank higher than Johnson in the world rankings: Louis Oosthuizen (No. 7), Matt Kuchar (No. 11), Keegan Bradley (No. 14) and Charl Schwartzel (No. 16). The list of top-25 competitors also includes the past three Nelson winners: defending champ Jason Dufner (No. 20); 2010 champ Jason Day (No. 25), a former Fort Worth resident, and Bradley, the 2011 champ.

Among Friday’s notable additions to the Nelson field were John Daly, Ryo Ishikawa, Stuart Appleby, Camilo Villegas, Chris DiMarco and Ted Purdy, the 2005 Nelson champ. Dropping off the list was Bo Van Pelt, the No. 26 player in the world rankings, as well as Carl Pettersson, Johnson Wagner and Derek Ernst, last week’s winner at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, N.C.

In addition, the 2013 Nelson will feature two notable teenagers: Guan Tianlang, the 14-year-old from China who finished as low amateur at the 2013 Masters, and Dallas native Jordan Spieth, 19, who will compete for the first time as a professional in his hometown tour stop. Spieth made his PGA Tour debut at the 2010 Nelson and finished in a tie for 16th while playing as a 16-year-old during his junior year at Jesuit High School.

Notable international players in the Nelson field will be past major champions Trevor Immelman (South Africa), Martin Kaymer (Germany), Padraig Harrington (Ireland) and Angel Cabrera (Argentina).

But the big news is that Johnson, who also withdrew from the 2013 Masters because of his back ailment, still plans to compete in Irving despite withdrawing from The Players after posting a 74 in Thursday’s opening round. In explaining his decision on his Twitter account (@DJohnsonPGA), he wrote: “Felt good working out this morning but something didn’t feel right on the range b4 the round. Hoping to rebound @ the @hpbnc!!”

TCU golfer Julien Brun, a three-time winner of college tournaments this season, has been selected as one of three finalists for the 2013 Ben Hogan Award, given to the nation’s top college golfer.

Brun, a sophomore from Antibes, France who turned heads by winning a 2012 European Challenge Tour event while competing as an amateur, was joined on today’s list of finalists by California’s Michael Kim and Washington’s Chris Williams.

Brun, a semifinalist last year, is the first TCU golfer to be chosen as a Hogan Award finalist by members of the selection committee. He will join Kim and Williams, also semifinalists for last year’s Hogan Award, at the May 20 announcement of the winner in Fort Worth during tournament week activities at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

An All-American and first-team All-Big 12 selection, Brun has posted eight top-10 finishes in 11 college events in the past year, including a runner-up finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Selection committee members consider a golfer’s performances in college and amateur events over the past 12 months when voting for the winner.

Brun, who became the sixth amateur to defeat professionals in a European Challenge Tour event at the 2012 Allianz Open Toulouse, is on pace to set the TCU record for lowest season scoring average (70.45). He ranks fourth in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and is third among college players in the Golfstat Cup.

But his fellow finalists also offer lofty credentials.

Kim, a sophomore, is the top-ranked college player in both the Golfstat Cup and the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. He has won four college events this season and was selected Tuesday as the Pac-12 Player of the year. In 12 college tournaments, Kim has yet to finish below 11th in any event this season.

Williams, a senior, is the top-ranked player in both the World Amateur Golf Rankings and the Scratch Players World Rankings. He received the 2012 Mark H. McCormack Medal as the world’s top-ranked amateur and is slated to play in both the 2013 U.S. Open and 2013 British Open. But Williams is winless in 10 college events this season, although he has three runner-up finishes and seven top-10 placements.

Before Brun reached the finals in balloting for the 2013 Hogan Award, the best finish by a TCU golfer had been two semifinals appearances: Brun in 2012 and Adam Rubinson, a Fort Worth Paschal graduate, in 2003.
