But at least thermonuclear war hasn't wiped us from the solar system, so hope springs eternal.

Like many fortunate American families, 2009 was a time of guilty excess. We watched our friends lose their jobs, yet, in the name of bolstering the economy, we still spent money like drunken frat boys, undaunted by the thought that the keg could go dry. We were damned lucky that nothing happened to wake us up to the perils of our folly. Nothing, that is, but the changing of a new year. 2010 marks a turning point (among other cliches) for us. The Dill-Marschik household has shoved off on a journey of discovery, one we've skirted before, but never with the zeal and delight with which we plan to approach the backyard (literally and figuratively) exploration we're conducting this decade.

Join us, fair readers, as Gateway Groupies presents: Project Nunway.

This decade, we're monasticizing ourselves to a healthy debt-to-income ratio, a smaller ecological footprint, and healthier, tougher imaginations and constitutions.

Project Nunway features the following fascinations:

Coupons, Groupons, Twofers and BOGOs

And all the free or cheap culture and entertainment St. Louis can throw at us!

Brace yourselves, sisters. Bare feet. Cold water. This is going to be pure hell on earth, but we'll love it.

And if we make it through ten years without killing ourselves, we'll attend a revue at the end of them.

I decided to do something special with my last day of vacation, something complicated and time consuming. I picked a baking project and, instead of the Twitter-suggested Baked Alaska (too Sarah Palin-y), I chose to make croissants because I just happened to have a one-pound block of butter in my fridge and four hours to kill. A half-hour into the project, I ran out of cling wrap, which is pretty much essential, and since I was already out of parchment paper, I decided to honor an age-old city tradition: Walking to the Grocery Store in the Rain. Not out of deference to those who've walked before me, but because I made Laine take the car to work this morning instead of riding her scooter in the rain.

I bundled up in my raincoat, grabbed my trusty Whole Foods canvas shopping bag (haven't used that sucker since WF's owner turned out to be a loony), and with my eyeglasses in my pocket, trudged down the sidewalk to the Shop 'n Save four blocks away from my house. I don't think anyone's shocked to hear that I'm a grocery store snob. I'm not above shopping at Aldi during times of financial strain, but ever since I got a nine-to-five "real" job, I've been a Costco, Trader Joe's or Schnuck's, and occasional Dierberg's and Straub's kind of girl. Provisions if I'm really feeling really frisky. I've always considered the south city Shop 'n Save the dirt store, or as Matt Picker called it, an awesome third world country. When I met Laine, she shopped there exclusively, and I found it disturbing. I've come to terms with my snobbery and I'm okay with running in for a few items, mostly chips, dips, and alcohol. And it rarely fails, every time I enter its sliding doors, something insane and random happens.

As an added opposite-of-bonus, I don't enjoy walking to Shop 'n Save, 'cause I'm terrified to cross the damned street at Kingshighway and Chippewa. I've been hit by a car once and run over once (childhood incidents, don't ask) so I'm not a huge fan of crossing busy streets in general. The ground at this particular corner is always littered with cracked bumpers, shattered headlights, severed hands, etcetera.

SO, I've got the hood of my raincoat on due to the steady drizzle, and also to remain relatively anonymous, 'cause I don't jaywalk and it makes me look like a big dork, waiting for the crosswalk sign to turn to walk before I step off the curb. Even without glasses, I manage to make it to the other side unharmed. At this point in the post, if you're waiting for something really dramatic and/or awesome to happen, you should probably step away. I'm only writing about this trip because I have to go back to work tomorrow and won't have time to update again for awhile and I don't want Laine to give me crap about not updating.

The only thing outstanding that happened at Shop 'n Save is that they're charging $.08 more for 10 feet less of off brand parchment paper, and I got a wicked stupid Taylor Swift song stuck in my head. Oh, and some lady wrote a check, and it was like watching someone chip the Constitution into limestone.

It is pretty remarkable that now the number of times I've gone to Shop 'n Save without a fight is exactly 1. In addition to my cling wrap and parchment paper, I purchased a half gallon of milk and a loaf of bread, 'cause I'm a masochist. It was raining pretty hard when I left, so I cut through parking lots and jaywalked triumphantly across Kingshighway at Bancroft.

♫he's the reason for the teardrops on my guitar♫

GAH! It's time for turn #2 on my croissant dough.

I know, I said I refused to go to the Bleeding Deacon until they went non smoking. But how would they know they were losing my business if I never went? I went to The Royale twice while they were still smoker-friendly. But I can admit when I'm wrong, and I was not being fair. Last night, we took one of our $25 for $10 Groupons to the Bleeding Deacon. Up front, I will tell you, wow, that place smells bad. BUT, we were there for well over an hour and by some miraculous quirk of air circulation, *we* did not smell like that when we left, so there's that.

They carry all my favorite Quebecois beers, so I happily chose the Unibroue Maudite without even looking at the mixed drink menu. BIG MISTAKE. We perused it later and regretted that we had to work the next day.

The food is outstanding, by far the best bar food I've ever had.

We started with a plate of corn fritters served on a bed of shredded leaf lettuce. They were just perfectly piping hot, not enough to burn your tongue, but hot.

Then I got in line to play with the jukebox, which turned out to be too cool for me. I only knew the most popular of the songs on each album, and I didn't want to look like a spaz, so I kept my quarters in my pocket. I really wanted to play a Klaus Nomi song, and the next time I go back, I'll come prepared with a list.

Our entrees arrived just in time for the last fourth of my beer. The fish on the fish and chips plate is delightfully coated in a Black and Tan beer batter, dotted liberally with giant flecks of black pepper. The fish itself was very flavorful, which is rare with fish and chips, unless it tastes BAD. I'm looking at you, Billy Goat Chip Company. I couldn't begin to finish the plate full of french fries under the fish.

Laine's meatloaf with bourbon ketchup was served with a mound of garlic mashed potatoes and a giant pile of fresh french-cut green beans (never saw that before) tossed with onion and Laine didn't tell me until after that they were also hiding chunks of bacon.

We finished up with a shared piece of vegan pineapple upside down cake, the only vegan cake I've had that didn't have the metallic twang of egg replacer. I don't know how they did it, but damn, it was good. The pacing of the table service was impeccable, better than any fancier joint I've been to. This was made doubly impressive since our server was also bar tending. And he made the recipes for the stellar mixed drinks! Probably best of all, even if you counted the $10 we paid for the Groupon, our Bleeding Deacon evening of debauchery and nonsense only cost $29 (Two beers, an appetizer, two entrees, and a dessert + a hefty tip for Luc!).

Just last week, St. Louis county voted to go nonsmoking in public spaces by 2011 and I was really hoping the city would, too. But with the Bleeding Deacon less than a mile away from our house, maybe it needs a smoky sandbag or two, or we're going to be the size of two houses.

Two things happened on Friday that I must tell you about.

First, Laine and I got off work late and ate supper at home, then got invited out for a late supper at a new Mexican restaurant in SoHa, so we just showed up for booze. I'm sure you don't remember Su Sala from well over a year ago when I begged y'all to go there and keep them from collapsing, since you didn't, and it did. Anyway, the new owner replaced all the unibomber restaurant furniture with real tables and chairs, and he brought on my saucy new table-wench, Wendy. We sat down and the first thing she said to us was, "Who wants to get DRUNK???" I was only marginally embarrassed when I was the only one who raised my hand and squeeed "Me!!!" Screw 'em if they can't take a joke. Anyways, Wendy brought me a submarino, a pilsner glass filled with a Corona and a shot glass full of tequila (the good stuff) and challenged me to a race to the bottom of the glass.

I declined the race, but happily consumed the drink (even though I don't care for Corona). Then other people ate some stuff.

That bean dip was really good, I think. Shortly after I tried it, I finished my submarino and badgered Wendy about where my margarita was. She brought me the "Wendy's Special" which, I'm doubting is a real drink, 'cause if it was, they would run out of tequila waaaaaaaay too fast. Go ahead and give it a shot, order one. It was fantastic.

So good, I had to tweet about it.

The ride to Mad Art for the Famous Fictional Villains opening was kinda of fuzzy, but I'd sobered up by the time we got there. Other than the fact that Frankenstein's monster wasn't really a villain, the show is a success. Laine was wearing her latest shirt.woot.com acquisition and had her picture taken with the shirt.woot creative director's golden iPhone.

We greeted Kick Ass Award Winning couple Daniel Shown and Carmelita Nuñez, and then these guys were pretty cool:

but then everyone else was dour faced and unhappy, so we left to go play Rock Band in Princeton Heights before the joy-sucking hipsters could completely steal my buzz.

Sure doesn't seem like three years since we blogged about Guy Fawkes Day, but it is so.We've made some changes over the past couple of days, no doubt all three of you noticed. We're going to put some serious effort into keeping Gateway Groupies interesting. This will last for at least a week or so, then I'll see something shiny and dart off again. Or maybe not! What with all these fascinating events going on this weekend, I declare there will be blog fodder for months.

Friday is the 7th Annual Midwest Assorted Produce Snuff Shorts Film Triennial, and it's first Friday at the galleries downtown. Saturday, we're finally gonna get to see Where the Wild Things Are, and Sunday is the 6th Annual 52nd City Kick Ass Awards ceremony!

In the month of November, we'll also cover a River Styx reading at Duff's, the Poetry Scores Art Invitational, a concert at The Way Out, and a pre-thanksgiving dinner, or We Are Awesome Day at the Dill-Marschik house, all before we head to Atlanta for our annual pilgrimage to see the family.

So don't give up on us yet, we're the best sporadic blog outfit in St. Louis three years running, and we're just getting started.

So, last March, I blogged about the Carnegie Preview at the SLSO, and this year, I am chuffed to get to do it again. In the effort to spread the love and get back into regular posting on this blog, I chose to write about it here at Gateway Groupies instead of my poetry blog.

So we parked on Olive and were granted a spectacular display of midtown hoosier as a middle-aged Boomhauer look-alike was harangued and threatened with the four-pronged cane of an elderly Vietnam War veteran, much to the frustration of the city police officer who was trying to break them apart without laughing. And if you ever feel the need to rob a vacant apartment building, midtown is your neighborhood. Alarms, strobe lights and whatnot lit up the building next to Powell Hall when we arrived, and they were still going strong when we left. Don't get me wrong, I love me some midtown, but damn. Why does the cultural center of the city have to feature the county-dwellers' every urban nightmare?

But on with the show.

Recent business traveling (one of many reasons for my frequent blog silence) has widened my cultural experience somewhat. One of my trips included a surprise opportunity to see Lyric Opera of Chicago's performance of Tosca. Our host was adamant that we would be wowed by the building. It was cool, but it was no Powell Symphony Hall.

The opera itself was magnificent, but I was unaffected by the architecture. Nothing compares to a palace of stunning opulence that still makes you feel you're at home. For better or worse, Powell Hall lacks the desire, and maybe even the ability, to intimidate its patrons.

Having no Icelandic sopranos or psychedelic mushroom trips to boast, I was apprehensive about how this year's Carnegie preview would compare to last year's. The program notes claimed the first piece, Igor Stravinsky's Le Chant du rossignol fit the Chinese festival theme, but it was too subtle for me. I think I'm destined to ignore (to my own detriment) the first piece in any symphony performance because it takes me too long to adjust the volume of my inner monologue so I can hear the damned music.

Besides the persistent whining of my brain, I was also distracted by my extreme eagerness to get on to the second piece, the Water Concerto. The Academy Award winning composer, Tan Dun, scored not only Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but also one of my favorite movies of all time, Hero. The stage hands began hauling out the goods as soon as the applause for the Stravinsky ended. Dale Fisher and Eddie Silva mentioned that some violins had gotten spattered with water earlier in the day, so tall Plexiglas screens were brought in to surround the stations of percussionist Colin Currie and those of his two accompanists. The front row had ponchos drawn up around them and Wet Floor signs banked both sides of the floor in front of the stage. But all Gallagher jokes were abandoned once the show started.

As far as my best Google fu can tell, the instruments Colin Currie and his associates struck, bowed and wobbled above and in their giant bowls of water were called waterphones. Outside the water, they echoed with a high-pitched, tinny sound, but when half submerged in the bowl, they made decent replicas of whale songs, rendered hilarious to me, since I'd just been party to a conversation about an amateur-ichthyologist friend's irrational hatred of Orcas.

The music was amazing, but it was pretty much downhill from there in terms of my ability to intellectualize what was happening. The rhythmic water clapping, the upside-down floating salad bowls, and the colander rain shower denouement were all delightful and they turned me into a slack-jawed six year old watching the best episode of Spongebob Squarepants EVER. I'm not a huge proponent of the standing ovation, but this time I was more than happy to join in St. Louis' tradition of exuberant enthusiasm for anyone who doesn't throw things at them.

How Colin Currie had the energy (and lack of prune hands) to turn from the water bowls to a mammoth marimba for the next piece is beyond my comprehension. Composer Bright Sheng's Colors of Crimson proved to be 20 minutes of frenzied complexity on the marimba, and perhaps it was the bolted Bailey's and coffee during the intermission, but it seemed like he was spotlit and the only one on stage. I was so happy for Currie at the end when the composer came out to hug him, I teared up a little. But that was probably the Bailey's, too.

The final piece of the evening, Bartók's The Miraculous Mandarin Suite, op. 19, was a fun, sassy performance that would have been much more enjoyable had I not spoiled it for myself by reading about the ballet for which Bartók originally wrote the music. Since this monstrous barbarity occurred earlier in the week, I had zero patience for multiple male on female violence, fantastical or otherwise. I did cheerfully hoot for the bassoon and oboe players who got a hug from conductor David Robertson during the ovation.

Overall, the Carnegie is once again damned fortunate to get a visit from the SLSO. And on the walk back to our car, it seemed like the neon lights of Grand Avenue were brighter, the sidewalk cleaner, and the Saxophone busker a little nattier, as all of midtown recognized the genius our itty bitty city can generate.

So a few times a year, something like this happens. And a decent number of city & county folk show up in earnest, and people like me and Laine show up to giggle at them. In the infancy of St. Louis fashion week, we went to a lingerie runway show at Grove Fest two years ago, which was immediately followed by an ARRG demonstration. This wasn't quite as fun as that. But besides the fashion glitterati and St. Louis Magazine photographers and me and Laine, fashion backward disgraces that we are, the lobby of the Lumiere Place Hotel also harbored indie craft icons like Courtney Chesley's Twisted Handmade and Kat Kissick's Katatomic Labs. Watching six-foot-tall models (Courtney and Kat were calling them gazelles, or antelopes, or something) try on upcycled jewlery and hair accessories was a hoot. And here and there, a bubba in a ball cap and Cardinals tee would walk by, drinking the free Budweiser products with pinkies raised.

On the way out, we stopped by a local salon's booth to watch the makeover demo they were showing on a laptop. It was a recording of the day their salon was featured on Channel 5's morning news segment on makeovers (I guess) and they took a dowdy looking mom with lifeless hair and dull coloring and transformed her into a slightly less dull-faced woman with the hair of someone twice her age. The quintessential St. Louis experience came however, when I realized that woman looked familiar to me. In fact, she was my best friend from sixth grade. Hi Wendi!

What I'm trying to say is: Keep in touch, St. Louis. Don't Ever Change, No Matter What.
