<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Charlie Bear was supposedly sold as a purebred, papered giant schnauzer.  He didn't work out as his first home where the male dog didn't like him, so he was posted on Craigslist in the Los Angeles area.  Several wonderful giant schnauzer owners were concerned about Charlie who was at that time known as Rex.  Through a series of events, Charlie went to a temporary foster home in the LA area until he could catch a ride to Phoenix.  </p><p><a href="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc8883301347f94f081970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Rex cropped" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54eda6bc8883301347f94f081970c " src="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc8883301347f94f081970c-500wi" /></a> </p><p>Charlie came to our house the middle of December, 2009 and spent much of his first ten days or so on a leash when he went outside.  He was such a fearful boy that we didn't want to not be able to get him back in the house, so we walked him around and around our yard many times each day until we thought he was comfortable enough with us to come in and out of the house.  </p><p><a href="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec6520cb970b-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="IMG_0072" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec6520cb970b " src="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec6520cb970b-500wi" /></a> <br />We spent a lot of time with Rex and the other dogs so that he got use to us all.  He never responded to the name of Rex, so just started calling him name after name.  When we tried Charlie, his  head perked up and he looked right at us, so Charlie Bear he became.</p><p>He loved to play with our young female giant schnauzer,  BG.  She got him to come in and out of the house and he learned to go into his crate by following her.  If she couldn't get him in the house, it often took upwards of twenty minutes to get him in the house and another twenty minutes to get him into his crate.  Slowly he got better.</p><p><a href="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec65267e970b-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="IMG_0042" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec65267e970b " src="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec65267e970b-500wi" /></a> </p><p>While we had Charlie, Valley of the Sun Giant Schnauzer Rescue also took in a nine year old bouvier who had been abandoned in a hotel  in downtown Phoenix.  Through talking to bouv rescue, we learned the the so called breeder where Charlie was born also had bouviers.  Charlies coloring, the size and shape of his head and feet, led us to suspect that Charlie was a bouv instead of a giant.  So Charlie became a bouv.  It will be interesting to see him in another six months and see what he looks like.  </p><p>Charlie was learning to be comfortable in his own skin.  He could now go in and out of the door and his crate fairly easily.  He played with all of the dogs and in the house learned to sleep just like they did. He came for treats and while he wouldn't sit for treats, he did stand and walk on his hind legs.  He did sit in his crate for his dinner.  </p><p><a href="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec652d5f970b-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="IMG_0008" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec652d5f970b " src="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec652d5f970b-500wi" /></a> <br /> VSGSR got some interest in Charlie and one was a wonderful application from a gal who had always dreamed of having a bouv after she fell in love with one an aunt and uncle had.  She and her significant other preferred to adopt dogs who needed them and their help to find their way in the world.  What better home could there be for Charlie?!?!  A home visit was done with Charlie in tow, and it was a great success.  Charlie was going to have a home.  Charlie has always had a problem with men, but he loved the guy in this house hold which sealed the deal for us. Charlie was also going to have another dog for company, a wolfhound mix who use to be more fearful than Charlie.</p><p><a href="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec653533970b-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Eric and CB" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec653533970b " src="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330133ec653533970b-500wi" /></a> <br />And tonight when I checked to see how Charlie is doing, he had his tail up!  Yea Charlie!! But this was a very bittersweet placement.  We fell in love with Charlie and will always carry a piece of him in our hearts.</p></div>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Valley of the Sun Giant Schnauzer Rescue is  participating in the <strong>2nd Annual PetSmart Charities® PetWalk™ presented by Purina® Pro Plan®</strong> on <strong>Sunday, February 21, 2010</strong>. Taking part in this event helps to save and improve the lives of homeless pets throughout Arizona. <br /><p /><p>Valley of the Sun Giant Schnauzer Rescue is participating again this year in the Pet
Walk and  last year we
were able to raise $7000 which enabled us to help many more
schnauzers.  This last summer in one ten day period we took in 8 giant
schnauzers from New Mexico to California and north to Salt Lake City.
These were giants  that were in need.  Two here in AZ had lost their
owner to cancer, two others here lost their owners do to the economy.
One in New Mexico was saved by his next door neighbor who talked the
owner into turning him over to us as he lived tied to a chain in his
backyard.  One time he had pulled up the stake and gotten over the
fence to the freeway behind his home.  Luckily for him the chain caught
and he couldn't get to the road but he was in grave danger.  When he
came to us, he was heart worm positive and was treated and cured of
that and is now in a wonderful home. </p><p><a href="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330128779acd11970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Hardy cropped" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54eda6bc888330128779acd11970c " src="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330128779acd11970c-500wi" /></a> <br /> </p><p> Another one looked like
Frankenstein when some well meaning shelter vets took lumps off his
head when he was neutered.  They must have let the staff do the sutures
because he looked very much like Frankenstein when he arrived.  But all
of that has been covered with his coat now and he too is in a wonderful
home.</p><p><a href="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330128779acbb7970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Roscoe top of head sutures" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54eda6bc888330128779acbb7970c " src="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330128779acbb7970c-500wi" /></a> <br /> <br />

<br />

To help these giants and others takes funds.  We can and do provide the
time and effort but we need money to do that and we depend on others to
help us get that money to pay our bills.  You can imagine the care that
more than fifty dogs can generate.  All of our funding comes directly
from people like you who care as much as we do.  Any amount you can
donate brings us one step further to reaching our goal of $5000 this
year.</p><p><a href="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330128779ace29970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Zoe new home" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54eda6bc888330128779ace29970c " src="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330128779ace29970c-500wi" /></a> <br /> <br />

<br />

We just took in another large close relative of the schnauzer who had
been abandoned in a motel by his meth addict owner.  He was there for
several days by himself before the staff realized that the owner was
not coming back and Bear was alone in the room.  This boy is around
nine years old and is non weight bearing on one of his front legs due
to arthritis.  <br />

<br />

VSGSR has gone from helping 5-8 dogs per year five years ago to closer
to 50+ dogs per year.  We need the support of schnauzer lovers every
where to help us continue our all volunteer efforts.  Even a small
amount such as $10 will help us.  If you are able to give more, that is
great but we appreciate any amount you are able to contribute.   We are
a  501(c)3 so your deductions should be tax deductible but please check
with your tax person.  <br />

</p><p> <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330128779ad755970c-popup" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Jed and Chelsea. cropped" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54eda6bc888330128779ad755970c " src="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330128779ad755970c-500wi" title="Jed and Chelsea. cropped" /></a> <br /> <br /> </span><br />

You may donate any amount these three ways.<br />

<br />

1. You may donate directly to VSGSR at this link for the Petsmart
Walk.  We will not get these monies until Petsmart clears their books
and sends it to us but it is greatly appreciated! </p><p><br />

<br />
If you live in the Phoenix area and would like to walk with us, we
would love that!  Last year we have about 25 dogs walking in the walk.
It was great to see so many of our rescues there.  <br />
<br />
On March 4, 2010 VSGSR is helping to put on the Giant Schnauzer Club of
America Western Regional as part of the Fiesta Cluster at Westworld in
Scottsdale, AZ.  Another great opportunity to see more giants.  I
believe it is scheduled to start at 10:00 AM with the puppy sweeps.</p><p><a href="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330128779adaff970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="display: inline;"><img alt="IMG_0028" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54eda6bc888330128779adaff970c " src="http://giantschnauzer.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54eda6bc888330128779adaff970c-500wi" /></a> <br />This is Charlie who is from a backyard breeder who caned the pups when they didn't move quickly enough.  We have had him for about six weeks and he is just beginning to come in and out of the house like a half way normal dog.  He is terrified of just about everything but slowly getting better.<br />
<br />
Again, thank you very very much!!<br />
