This Sunday PBC is starting a new spiritual growth campaign called "40 Days in the Word". I'm so excited about this I can hardly contain myself. The campaign will involve 7 weekend sermons about the word of God (see below for the series blurb and weekly topics), a 6-week small group curriculum where we'll learn how to more effectively study God's word, a daily personal online devotional, and a weekly memory verse pertaining to the word of God.

As with anything in life, you will get out of this campaign what you invest in it. So, I encourage you to attend the services every Sunday, get involved in one of our small group studies, and take the time to watch/listen to the daily devotions. Let's go "all in" during this campaign and watch God do something really special.

In Amos 8:11 the prophet describes a famine, not of bread or water, but of hearing God's word. Sadly, we live in a time when the word of God is readily available but scarcely read. Frankly, too many of God’s people don’t know God’s Word, don’t really believe God’s Word, and don’t ’do’ God’s Word. Our church is participating in "Forty Days in the Word" with hopes of being transformed into people who are ’doers’ of the word. During this seven week campaign we will explore the authenticity, reliability, power, comfort, interpretation and doing of God’s Word. Join us as we learn God's word, grow in our love for God's word, and begin living out God's word.

Reading/studying the Bible needs to be part of our daily routine. I can honestly say nothing has impacted the consistency of my Christian life as much as spending quality time in God's word each morning. So, if you're not already reading the Bible I would invite you to make 2012 the year you turn over a new leaf, or page as the case may be. In fact, let me challenge you to read thru the entire Bible over the next 12 months. You can do it! I know you can. Go for it!

There are many different resources you can use to aid your time in God's word. The are numerous reading plans from which you can choose. Let me recommend one resource that I have found to be incredibly useful - especially if you are more of a techy type (smart phone, internet, ipad, etc.).

Check out Youversion.com. On this site you will find a plethera of reading plans. There is no doubt you can find something that will suit you. Get the new year started right by starting a new reading plan in the word of God.

He knows if you've been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake.

Based upon this song here's how Santa operates. If you're on the nice list you get toys. If you on the naughty list you get coal. In other words your gifts are based upon your works. You only get what you merit. You have to earn your presents.

I'm so glad God doesn't operate like Santa. God has a naughty list too, and all of us are on it (Romans 3:23). Despite our sinful condition God has offered us the gift of eternal thru Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23). We don't merit it. We can't earn it. We certainly don't deserve it. But God offers it to us anyway (Ephesians 2:8-9). Through faith in Jesus Christ we are put on God's good/nice list called the book of life (Philippians 4:3). We make the list not because we are good, but because Jesus is good. We should be good for goodness sake - our life should be filled with good works (Ephesians 2:10) not to gain eternal life but because we already have it.

So, during this Christmas season as we're threatening to take away your kids gifts (which we never do by the way) when they misbehave, don't forget that God offers you the greatest gift ever given in-spite of your naughtiness.

Being a parent to two children has taught me so much about myself and my relationship with God. The most recent lesson came about a week ago. The lesson came in the midst of a fairly typical episode in our home when one of my children "misbehaved" and received a consequence. A few minutes later the child, who shall remain nameless, came to me and said they were sorry. I accepted their apology and then they preceded to ask if their privilege could be restored to which I replied, "No". They were dumbfounded - "what do you mean, I said I was sorry!" Of course, then we had a conversation about how apology doesn't necessarily eliminate consequence. That wasn't well received to say the least.

What became very apparent throughout this experience was that my child's expression of sorrow was driven by a desire to have their pain stop. They weren't truly repentant for their actions. There was no remorse over the sin that had been committed, there was simply sadness because what they wanted had been taken away.

I'm afraid we are sometimes guilty of approaching God in the same way. We come to Him saying we are "sorry" for a particular sin motivated by nothing more than a desire for our pain to stop. There is no doubt we can come to God confessing our sin and He will forgive us (I John 1:9), however, our confession must carry with it an attitude of repentance (Proverbs 28:13). Our sorrow, our confession, our forsaking of sin must be driven by a brokenness and an acknowledgement that we have sinned against God and damaged our relationship with Him. Coming to God in this way may or may not relieve whatever consequences we are experiencing but one thing is sure - we will be forgiven and fellowship will be restored.

However, one thing has never changed, the desire to have God speak into my life and to be changed by my time in His word.

If you desire to have a healthy, thriving walk with Jesus you must have a consistent relationship with the Bible. Find a reading plan that works for you and spend time in God's word every day. Enter this time desiring Him to speak to you and change you. Schedule this time into your daily routine and make it non-negotiable. I promise you it will make all the difference in the world.

Maybe you are think where do I even begin. Here is a great resource for you to check out - Youversion.com. On this site (and Smart phone app) you'll find every reading plan imaginable. Check it out.

Anyone who is interested in being baptized please contact the church office or visit the Connect Table on Sunday. I also invite everyone to come out and celebrate with those who have decided to be baptized.

What is the Meaning of Baptism?

A: The act of submersion through Baptism physically represents Jesus Christ’s burial and resurrection.

“I Corinthians 15:3-4 “Christ died for our sins . . He was buried . . .and that He rose again.”

Colossians 2:12 “Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”

A: By being baptized, believers illustrate their commitment to begin a new life as a Christian. It doesn’t establish a relationship with Jesus Christ, it shows that a relationship has already begun. Baptism is like a wedding ring; it is the outward symbol of the commitment that a believer makes in his or her heart.

II Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new!”

Romans 6:4 “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in the newness of life.”

What is Baptism?

A: Baptize means “to dip under water.” or to "immerse".

A: The purpose of baptism is to publicly confess your personal commitment to Jesus Christ.

Why be Baptized by Immersion?

A: Jesus was baptized through immersion.

Matthew 3:16 “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him . . .”

A: Every baptism recorded in the Bible was by immersion. For example:

Acts 8:38-39 “. . . and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water . . .”

Who Should be Baptized?

A: Every person who believes in Jesus Christ as Savior.

Acts 2:41 “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized . . .”

Acts 8:12 “But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.”

When Should I be Baptized?

A: As soon as you have decided to receive Christ into your life, you can and should be baptized. There is no reason to delay! If you wait until you are “perfect,” you’ll never feel “good enough!”

Acts 2:41 “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized . . .the same day!”

Acts 8:35-38 “Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.”

When Should Children be Baptized?

A: At PBC, we wait until our children are old enough to believe and to understand the true meaning of baptism before we baptize them.

Some churches practice a “baptism of confirmation” for children. This ceremony is intended to be a covenant between the parents and God on behalf of the child. The parents promise to raise their child in the faith until the child is old enough to make his own personal confession of Christ. This custom began about 300 years after the Bible was completed. This is different from the act of baptism described in the Bible, which was only for those old enough to believe. The purpose is to publicly confess your personal commitment to Christ.
