Will Meconium Ruin Cloth Diapers?

My three month old has never had a disposable on her tender little bum. She's our fourth baby and we have cloth diapered all of our kids. We took a selection of newborn diapers to the hospital with us this time, including Bummis Organic Prefolds in the preemie size, Bummis Super Brite and Super Lite Covers in newborn size, Tini Fit AIO's, and Kissaluvs Fitted diapers.

There seems to be a common misconception that using cloth diapers, during the time when a baby is having meconium bowel movements, will ruin the diapers. This is not the case. My daughter deposited thick tarry black poop on prefolds, fitted diapers and all-in-ones. We took the diapers off of her and dropped them into a wet bag. A day or two after we got home from our 24 hour stay, I did diaper laundry. I took the pile of diapers and dropped them all into a short cold rinse and soak then a warm wash and a single rinse. I hung the diapers on the line and they came in totally perfect. There was not a spot on them and they were definitely NOT ruined.

A customer sent me an email yesterday with some questions about diapers and pricing. She mentioned that she is seeing more and more cheap pocket diaper brands being sold and wonders why the pocket brands I sell are generally more expensive. She also mentioned that there has been some insinuation that boutique type stores raise diaper prices in order to make a hefty profit.

I thought this customer raised some interesting issues, so I will share my responses with all of you.

Cloth diapers do not have a large profit margin. One reason I have expanded to carrying more of a selection of natural products for babies and families is that they offset the lower profit on diapers. The unfortunate truth is that in order to run an actual store, one has to make money to pay the rent, services, employees, etc. I truly believe that by having a store which customers can walk into, cloth diapers are made much more accessible within a community.

I don't carry most of the cheap pocket diapers because there is no guarantee about workers' fair treatment in the manufacturing process. Even with a Chinese manufactured diaper, there is a significant cost to paying a fair wage, providing safe and comfortable working conditions, providing benefits, allowing reasonable work hours and maintaining environmentally friendly manufacturing processes. I have seen the breakdown of the actual cost of providing all of this and now know that no pocket diaper with inserts can make it into a consumers hands for $8-12 and have been fairly manufactured according to these standards. Yes, I regret that I cannot ethically offer these cheap pockets, but there are other options equally as affordable, including prefolds, flats, consignment and even many all in two systems. I am not willing to offer for sale any product which may have been manufactured at the expense of a worker's health, safety or well being.

As for store pricing of diapers, most diaper manufacturers set price guidelines which store owners are expected to adhere to. Most of us do our best to respect this and maintain good relationships with those from whom we purchase our diapers.

Wrapping Paper Alternatives

Many families are unaware that wrapping paper is not a recyclable item in many areas. It apparently contains too much ink to feasibly recycle. Yesterday I requested ideas for wrapping paper alternatives from fans on our Facebook page. The response was so wonderful, that I thought I would share some of the ideas here. Our list is by no means conclusive and we'd love to hear more ideas!

Wrapping Paper Alternatives:

Reuse old wrapping paper, carefully removed from previous gifts received and folded and saved.
Wrap gifts in fabric which can be easily saved and reused. Fasten the fabric with reusable fabric ribbon.
Use large stockings to fit bigger items.
Try drawstring Santa Sacks for gifts.
Reuse gifts bags from gifts previously received. Do not tape or staple the tops, rather tie the handles together so that the bag can continue to be reused.
Decorate brown shipping paper.
Towels, dish towels, tablecloths and other linens can be used as wrap which also functions as part of the gift.
Make your own drawstring cloth gift bags to reuse year after year.
Use children's artwork as wrap.
Pillowcases make great, easy to fasten, reusable gift bags.
Newsprint can be easily decorated.
Newspaper, magazine and comic pages can be used as wrap.
Gift boxes from thrift stores can be reused year after year.
Wrap gifts in reusable shopping bags.
Decorate and reuse old boxes from just about anything.
Use baskets and other repurposed containers.
Worm compost any paper shreds.
Buy recyclable earth-friendly wraps.

We have recently restocked our Lalabee Bathworks products and brought in some new ones. We are particularly excited about their new Organic Sweet Orange Bubble Bath and Organic Chamomile Baby Wash (head-to-toe shampoo and wash all-in-one!). We have found that one to two caps full of the bubble bath provide a nice amount of bubbles at our house with our hard water. Until now, we had a really tough time finding a bubble bath we felt safe using as a bath time treat for our children.

Car Conversations: Courtship Camp

Tonight, I am definitely posting something different. I recently shared this with friends on Facebook. Everyone seemed to enjoy it to such an extent, that I am going to share it on this blog as well. What follows was a conversation I had with my seven-year-old as we drove from the post office to Huckleberry Baby Shop yesterday. Often vehicular discourses with our children can be the most revealing and entertaining of any conversations we have with them in a day. What follows is a prime example:

Olivia: Mommy was there anything in the mailbox for me?

Me: No, just some bills for me.

Olivia: What about for Daddy?

Me: No, but he can share the bills with me. That’s what married people do.

Olivia: They share a bed too right?

Me: That’s right.

Olivia:That would not be good if the man was a really loud snorer. A woman should get to sneak in and listen to a man sleeping before she marries him. Hmmm. They should make a marriage camp that ladies can go to to pick out a husband. The men would have to go to stations and wear name tags so that the women could remember who the men were when they moved to the next station.

Me: That’s an interesting idea. What would take place at each station?

Olivia: The first station would be a sleeping station so that the woman could find out if the man snored loudly. It would be really hard to sleep and share a bed if he was a really loud snorer.
The next station would be an eating station. You would not want to marry a really sloppy eater.
After that, they would go to the bathroom station to check and see if they were very very stinky in the bathroom.
After that would be the waiting station. The man would have to sit for a very long time and the woman could watch him to see if he was patient.
The last station would be the love station. It would take place in a room decorated with pink hearts. The men would lay around on pink couches and the woman could look at them to see if she loved them.

Me: What about the men? Would they get to choose which women they loved?

Olivia: Yep. They could raise their arm on the couch and wave and yell, “Hey woman. I love you!”
The last part would be the pick-up area where the woman would get to pick up the man she chose. They would leave together to go plan their wedding.

Ideal courtship, according to Olivia, age seven!

Wow! What a great day we had at the Vancouver Island Baby Fair in Victoria today! My cloth diapering speech and PowerPoint presentation went really well and gathered a great audience. We were constantly busy at our booth, a great thing! We are headed back tomorrow for another day of fair festivities before we pack up and head back to Nanaimo.

Our New Shop

Huckleberry Baby Shop in Nanaimo now has a shop open! It has been an extremely long process as we wrangled with the city over permit and licensing issues. We are extremely grateful to Cliff Faust of Elise Construction for all of his amazing help with the renovation we had to do!

We had our grand opening Sept. 12th and were thrilled with how many customers we had attend! If you have not yet visited, please drop by 12A-4376 Boban Drive in Nanaimo. For those of you too far a way to come see us, here are a few photos of the new shop. The uploader is currently very slow, so there are only two photos and we are missing a few of the shop areas. Ringley and Natursutten

We have two new products to introduce. First is the Canadian made Ringley teething toy. The Ringley is made in Canada with 100% certified organic cloth and natural untreated Canadian Maple wood.

The second new product to Huckleberry Baby Shop is the Natursutten natural pacifier. We have fielded so many requests for these little gems, we decided it was time to bring them in! Natursutten pacifiers are made from pure rubber from the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensi.

The protein that on rare occasions can provoke a latex allergy is removed from the rubber mass used for these pacifiers. This means, that there is no risk of latex allergy when using them.

All pacifiers are CE certified which means, that the product lives up to the European Union (EU) directive in this product area concerned with safety, health and environment.

The past month has seen a series of ups and downs for us as we work toward opening a showroom location for Huckleberry Baby Shop. We were extremely excited initially, but over the past few weeks, some of that enthusiasm has been dampened as we ran in to several difficulties with the City of Nanaimo. As a result, our opening has been delayed until mid to late June while we deal with unanticipated renovations, necessary before opening. We will be thrilled to see all of you when we finally open in mid to late June!

All of our merchandise currently resides at the new shop and I am running back and forth to fill and ship orders. We also moved to a local pick-up system instead of home delivery to try to ease the load at this time.

It has been an insanely long time since I last updated this blog. I have been busy trying to keep up with orders, trial kit requests, and deliveries, not mention family responsibilities. I apologize for the blog-neglect! It has become apparent that I cannot continue to manage the demands of the business from home any longer...

Big things have been in the works and tonight, I am thrilled to announce that Huckleberry Baby Shop will be opening a showroom/storefront in early May! Yes, that IS next month! We are busy preparing to provide Nanaimo families with a local resource for eco-friendly parenting choices. Huckleberry Baby Shop will be Nanaimo's first comprehensive cloth diapering and baby wearing resource centre...plus much more! We will have room to offer on-site cloth diapering and baby wearing workshops. It will be terrific to finally be able to offer a walk-in location for customers to browse our products.

Joining me in this new adventure will be Lynn Boyetchko, a Nanaimo mom of two boys. She is a wonderful, warm, witty person who shares my vision for the business. I couldn't ask for a better business partner, and I am sure that you will love her too!

I thank all of you for your amazing support over the last one and a half years! I cannot believe how much the business has grown. It really has surpassed my most optimistic expectations! I look forward to working with many of you as we expand Huckleberry Baby Shop to provide a new level of customer service!

Restocking

As a relatively new retailer, inventory control still presents one of my biggest challenges. I know there are several products which I need to order at fairly regular intervals because they sell out quickly. Other items are newer and I have to make a guess at how often I will need to restock. I was amazed this past month at how quickly new shipments of Snappi Fasteners and Happy Heinys One Size Diapers disappeared! I apologize to those of you frustrated by this. You will be pleased to hear that they are now restocked! I have added the Snappi Fasteners to the shop inventory and the Happy Heinys will be there soon. Other inventory updates this week have included Bummis and bumGenius diapers and accessories, lots of Mother-ease diapers and covers for local customers, and AMP diapers and inserts. More stock is arriving daily!

It's happening this month! February 28th and March 1st marks Nanaimo's first Vancouver Island Baby Fair! To celebrate, we will be running a contest each week leading up to the big event.

Week One's Contest will run from today until Saturday, February 7th. There's no purchase necessary to enter. Up for grabs is an AMP Duo Pocket Diaper in your choice of (in stock) colour and size plus a free weekend pass to the Vancouver Island Baby Fair. If you are from out of town and want to win the diaper but not the ticket,we will draw a second name for the weekend pass if you win.

A New Look for 2009!

Huckleberry Baby Shop is getting a new look for 2009! When I started out in this business, I had no web design experience. I also did not have the thousands necessary to hire someone to create a snazzy website for me. With the help of numerous HTML coding books from the library I set out to create a website. Many very late and very frustrating nights later, I would definitely not recommend doing what I did! I have appreciated the comments from all of you who indicate that the website is straightforward and easy to navigate. It needs an update though, to lose the overall "do-it-yourself" look it currently has.

Our logo is changing too! The photo of my daughter has served us well as a recognizable identifier for our shop. It is not ideal for print applications. I found a great mompreneur to design my logo and update my website. Her name is Kristine and she runs Web Savvy Mama. She is doing a great job and is completely and surprisingly affordable.

Here's our new logo. It incorporates the West Coast red huckleberry as well as our family favourite, a bird. The bird also symbolizes a fragile species at risk from irresponsible human choices. At Huckleberry Baby Shop, we encourage families to make gentle choices for their families and our fragile environment!

Stork Craft Baby Crib Recall

Although most of you are likely already aware of this, I thought I would add a quick post regarding this particular recall. is a huge one and many of us have Stork Craft cribs:

All Stork Craft cribs with a manufacturing date between May 2000 and November 2008 are included in this voluntary recall. The manufacturing date can be found on the lower right hand corner of the instruction sheet which is glued on the mattress base.

The cribs were sold in various styles and finishes. The manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm's name, address, and contact information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firm's insignia "storkcraft baby" is inscribed on the drop side teething rail of some cribs.

Hazard Identified
The metal support brackets used to support the mattress frame can crack and break after stress is put upon them during incorrect installation. If one or more support brackets break, the mattress could potentially collapse and create a dangerous gap between the mattress and crib rails in which a child can become entrapped and suffocate.

Health Canada has received one complaint in which the metal mattress support bracket failed. No injury resulted from this incident.

Please note that these products meet current safety standards. This notice is posted as a precautionary measure. Stork Craft, in cooperation with Health Canada, is conducting a voluntary recall of this consumer product.

It has been a while since updating this blog. Perhaps I should add this to my list of resolutions, right under "find more time for important tasks!" I'm sure many of you can relate, particularly during the busy Christmas Season. We enjoyed a sometimes chaotic, but overall enjoyable Christmas with family. Although cliché I find the holidays richer since having children and getting to experience the season through their eyes too. We are now settling back into our normal busy routine with our three little girls. The homeschooling has gotten off to a rather sluggish start, but we are at it again!

On the business side of things, lots has been going on! Firstly, I must thank all of the wonderful customers who have made Huckleberry Baby Shop a success! We have passed our first year anniversary and I am more than pleased with the direction in which we are headed!

Restocking is occurring continually. I have stopped posting when restocking occurs because it becomes a constant listing. Please contact me at huckleberrybabyshop@shaw.ca if you have stock questions. There are more bumGenius 3.0's on the way, and more Happy Heiny's one size for a third restocking as well. I am thrilled with how quickly I sell out of some of these diapers!

There are several new products coming this month.

We excited to announce that Bummis Organic Prefolds will be here in the next week. You will be pleasantly surprised with the price! They are a great deal for an organic cotton diaper!

bumGenius All-in-One cloth diapers will arrive in the next week too. These new and improved AIO's now feature a covered slot and stretchy tabs like our best selling One-Size 3.0 diaper. The new pocket behind the absorbent microfiber core decreases drying time and allows more flexibility with absorbency since an additional insert can now be added inside the diaper.

We will also be receiving more unbleached cotton prefolds. By customer request, we are bringing in more sizes to compliment the infant and premium ones we currently sell.

The stock has been pouring in these last couple of weeks! Many of our low stock items have been restocked and we have received numerous new items.

New all snap one size diapers have arrived from Wahmies. They have the same lovely soft and silky velour lining and four rise settings as the hook version, but with snap closures rather than the hooks. The Wahmies one size microfiber inserts work really well in these diapers.

We are really happy to bring you Green Acre Designs (GAD) PUL Pocket Diapers. These hip-snapping sized pockets get excellent reviews! We have also brought in GAD one-size microfiber inserts. They are very absorbent!

More size two envelope covershave finally arrived from AppleCheeks. Made in Canada!

Several new carriers are now available from Huckleberry Baby Shop. Carrying or wearing your baby (also referred to as baby wearing) has numerous benefits. One that has recently come to light is the prevention of positional plagiocephaly or "flathead." Positional plagiocephaly occurs when a baby spends to much time in positions that put pressure on one area of theri head, usually the back, causing flattening. Overuse of infant carrier car seats outside of vehicles contributes to this. Carrying or wearing your baby is one step toward preventing plagiocephaly. Don't forget Tummy Time either!

New carriers include the Pikkolo Soft Structured Carrier. This carrier is unique in that it has a cinch-able bottom so that a very small baby can be worn legs out.

Another new soft structured carrier is the Action Baby Carrier or ABC.

The Active Mom Carrieror ABC is an extremely plush, soft, luxurious carrier. It has a padded body with minky lining. The back height is adjustable too.

Authorized Retailers

Recently, a customer related a carrier purchase horror story to me. She had unknowingly bought from an unauthorized retailer and was unable to get a replacement when her product failed.

When purchasing from an online retailer, particularly if you are making a large purchase, make sure you are dealing with an authorized retailer. Why should this matter? In the case of product defects or problems, the manufacturer will usually replace an item purchased through an authorized retailer. For instance, when one of my customers had a Velcro issue with a bumGenius diaper, I was able to put her in direct contact with Bummis, the Canadian distributor, and her diaper was replaced in a very expedient manner. (Bummis has terrific customer service!) You really have no manufacturer's warranty on a product unless you purchase through an authorized retailer.

How can you protect yourself? It's simple....ask! An authorized retailer can let you see a signed agreement with the manufacturer or wholesaler and can give you contact information so that you can verify the retailer's status yourself.

The old saying "buyer beware" holds true!

More Stock Updates

I have spent more time updating the website with the stock that has been pouring in.

We are really excited to introduce you to an amazing organic cotton velour fitted diaper, from the Canadian company, Organic by Nature. They are called Moonies and come in both "Basic" and "Limited Edition" versions. Both varieties are luxuriously soft soft and squishy thanks to the organic cotton velour! Like the extremely popular AMP Hemp Fitted diaper, each Moonies comes with a removable organic cotton velour/ sherpa doubler for added absorbency.

Happy Heinys are here with either snap or Velcro closures. They are a one-size pocket diaper made in the USA. They come with a small and a large microfiber insert.

Heiny Huggers are here from the same company. An amazingly soft, sized fitted diaper, they are a great overnight option under your favourite cover.

You could also choose to try one under the new Stacinator Lux Fleece Covers . These are also made in the USA.

I have finally gotten the BabyHawk and ToddlerHawkMei Tai carriers posted on the store site. If you have never used a Mei Tai, I can give you tying lessons if need be. Once you are used to them, they go on in seconds! We have been using a ToddlerHawk with my two-year-old. I have always been a buckle-carriers gal, but I am loving the ToddlerHawk! The back height is so nice and tall, particularly important if you have an "archer" like we do.

We have restocked the Babies Beyond Borders Mei Favorite Buckle Baby Carriers! I have also been using the toddler version of this carrier the past few weeks. Again, what a treat after using a relatively short-backed carrier! With the buckles, this carrier flies on and off my back!

Diaper Trial Program and Updates

I have been remiss in posting due to the huge amounts of new stock arriving at the same time my husband is out of town. I'm buried...hence the insane time I am posting this! There are so many updates and new stock, it is difficult to know where to begin!

Huckleberry Happenings

So much has been going on, I have had very little time left to blog.

Our Cloth Diapering Workshop last Tuesday went well and I have appreciated communicating with some of you since then. For those of you still waiting for orders, the items should be here next week and I will get them to you then. We will be running more workshops in several formats, including small workshops for groups of 5-12 who want to learn all the basics of cloth diapering

Great new stock arrived this week. We got our first shipment of the Canadian-made AppleCheeks diapering systems. Unfortunately, most of the size 2's we ordered are on backorder.

The Canadian-made AzureWraps are also here. A stretchy wrap is essentially a long strip of fabric used to "wrap" your baby onto the front of you. The AzureWrap has the added visual appeal of a print front panel which also serves as a handy pocket. Babies worn in wraps are well supported right up against you. Wrapping a cranky baby is often very soothing for them, perhaps because of the gentle, swaddling, all-over pressure the wrap provides. The even distribution of the weight over wide areas of your shoulders, back, and hips makes wrapping a really comfortable baby-wearing option for parents too! My third child screamed constantly. I had a stretchy wrap which I found to be a lifesaver. Not only did it calm my cranky baby girl, it allowed me to have my hands free to care for my two older children and to carry on our homeschooling and other everyday activities.

We are thrilled to bring you Mei Favorite Baby and Toddler Buckle Carriers from Babies Beyond Borders. This is a really neat company. You can read about them here. I am always impressed with companies whose innovative and ethical business practices better the situation of others. These carriers come in a baby and a toddler version. The Mei Favorite Baby Buckle carrier has a back height similar to the Ergo and the toddler version has a wonderfully tall back, perfect for taller kiddos. I wore my just-turned-two-year-old in a Mei Favorite Toddler carrier for four hours on Saturday, through two soccer games and a pumpkin festival. We both stayed comfy and happy, she even had a nap.

Some nice features include the padded, structured hip belt, the decorative front panel/pocket, a detachable chest strap, and the ability to wear the straps crossed or ruck-sack style in both back and front carries. A removable snap-closure pouch is included for your keys and wallet or phone. There are also loops for toys, etc. The carrier rolls nicely into a fanny pack which you can wear around your waist when you child is not being carried. The should straps are wide, lightly padded, almost "wrap style--very comfy! All the webbing and buckles are nice and wide so that they do not dig in.
