Armoire Transformation by A Little Glass Box

What a great way to start the week by visiting all you lovelies on Ucreate!

Normally I call a little glass box home where I share lots of DIY projects, home decor, and party ideas as well as fill everyone in on my daily life shenanigans. I want to give a huge shout out to Kari for allowing me to stop by and hang out with you all as well as share my most recent project.

I’m really excited about this project because it is the perfect example of “rewriting your furniture’s story”. I sometimes feel like after we label a piece of furniture we can’t see past its original use. I love adapting furniture and putting it back into my life.

This project is an example of how we took a child’s armoire and turned it into something more grown up. It’s now repurposed and functional.

We used: Power tools, stain, paint, mirror, silicone adhesive, hardware, and molding to achieve its new look.

The first thing we did before even touching the armoire was to draw out the vision for the new piece by using the current picture of the furniture and drawing over it. And since we’re super professionals over here at Casa de Schutz, I used crayon for my sketch- haha.

We then removed the circle mirror & circular molding from the front of the door and cut out a larger rectangular hole and used molding to build up and frame the new rectangular hole.

Then we entered the land of lots of sanding and painting. I chose a basic creamy white and Olympic paint in Mountain Stream to highlight the armoire. We then aged and enriched the tones of the two colors by rubbing a little bit of Minwax Wood Finish stain in Dark walnut and quickly wiped it off.

We then cut some crown molding and attached it to the top of the armoire after we removed the old decorative molding from the top. We stained it as well as the legs of the unit the same color we rubbed over the paint. The look of the molding really helps to “finish” the armoire and make it look more substantial.

We inserted the mirror onto the front of the armoire (which we had our local glass shop cut for us) using Silicone glue.

The last step was installing our new hardware which we bought from Home depot.

Now this armoire has grown from child’s furniture to being worthy of some adult love. We are so excited to be able to now use it in the master bedroom. I really hope this inspires you to look at your furniture with potential. I had so much fun with you all and thanks for making this gal feel so welcome.

Victorian Valentine Skirt Tutorial by Nancy’s Couture

Kari always finds the most amazing projects around. I am SO honored to be here today!

My name in Nancy, and I blog at Nancy's Couture.

I am blessed to be a stay at home mom to a sweet boy and a little princess. I love to sew!…especially for my children. You will find tutorials and patterns for recycled and made from scratch clothes for kids over at my blog.

Today I am going to share my newest creation.

I am totally in love with this skirt!!!

Victorian Valentine Skirt

Supplies Needed:

1/2 yard each: lacy fabric, white cotton fabric, another white cotton fabric

Lace edging....lots of it

Crochet trim 29"

3/4" non roll elastic

Thread

Scissors

Sewing Machine

First we cut the skirt pieces.

Cut 2 rectangles 14.5” x 12.5”

Now we will cut the fabric strips to make the ruffles.

*Cut 6 strips of the first fabric.

*Cut 4 strips of the second fabric and the lace fabric.

*Cut 10 pieces of lace each 28" in length

Next we are going to make the base of the skirt.

With right sides facing stitch the sides.

Now for the elastic casing you will fold down 1/4" and then 1". Stitch close to the fold.

Next we need to attach the lace edging to the strips of fabric.

Lay the lace on top of the fabric. Using a short stitch. zig zag stitch over the edges of the lace and fabric as pictured above.

Fold lace down and iron flat.

We will not add lace to the bottom of the lace fabric, instead we will hem it. To hem fold the bottom up 1/4" and then another 1/4" and stitch.

Now grab 2 strips of the same fabric. Lay them right sides facing each other. Sew each end so that you have a big loop. Continue with the remaining fabric strips.

It's time to gather all the strips for the ruffles of the skirt.

To gather you are going to stitch. using your longest stitch length, 1/4" from the edge. Then you will stitch again 1/2" from the edge. This will prevent puckering in the ruffle when you sew it to the skirt.

Now you are going to sew the ruffle to the bottom of the skirt.

With right sides together pin the ruffle to the skirt matching the seams. Adjust the gathers to fit.

Stitch in between the two rows of gathering stitches as shown in the above photo.

Iron the raw edge up toward the skirt.

Top stitch 1/4” from the seam.

Continue adding ruffles. I just laid the ruffles out to see how far apart I wanted them spaced.

To attach the rest of the ruffles I followed the same steps as above except I put the wrong side of the ruffle to the right side of the fabric.

I again sewed between the 2 rows of gathering stitches. Then I took out the gathering stitches and zig zag stitched the raw edge to prevent fraying.

After attaching the last ruffle you will sew on the crochet trim. This will cover up the raw edges of the top ruffle.

Put elastic in the waistband casing and you re finished!

So much ruffle-y goodness.

Here’s Beck…

Supply List:

1 Red 4x6 piece
2 Gray 4x6 pieces, 14x3 strip, 7x3 strip
Fusible Light Interfacing: 2 4x6 pieces, 14x3 strip, 7x3 strip
Sew-on “hook and loop”
Red thread
Polyester filling
optional: Silhouette Craft Cutter and Sewing Fabric Interfacing

If you have the Silhouette Craft Cutter and you want to cut the “Pin it” with your machine send me an email at beckyucreate@gmail.com and I will send you the file. (I only have it saved as a Silhouette file though, not SVG)

If you don’t have a craft cutter, no worries. You can still make the “Pin it” pincushion. Just print out this file {resize if needed} and cut out the “pin it”. Iron Wonder-Under on the red fabric and trace the image backwards on the wonder under and cut image out. When you flip the image over it should read correctly and be ready to iron on your gray fabric. {Follow Wonder-Under directions.}

Iron “Pin it” on one of your gray 4x6 pieces.

Grab your gray strips and fold in half {right sides together}, iron flat and sew up one side creating a tube.

Turn tube right side out {I use this method from Ashley at Make it and Love it}. Tuck about 1/2” of one raw edge inside the tube and pin. Starting at the other raw edge sew a top stitch (1/8 inch) all the way around. Do this to both gray strips and then set them aside.

Top stitch the “Pin it” letters…with patience…for a more finished look.

Okay, let’s put it all together now. Grab all you pieces and plenty on straight pins and lets finish up.

Pin the long gray strip to the front of the “Pin it” panel in the middle. Because the strap is so long and we don’t want it messing with our sewing, pin the strap to itself away from the edges of the panel. Next pin the short strap to the other side of the “Pin it” panel and place it on top of the other strap. {This totally sounds harder than it is.}

Pin the back gray panel on top of the straps and the front “Pin it” panel. Make sure to leave one side open in order to turn the pincushion right side out. Start sewing (1/2” seam) at on side of the open edge and end at the other side of the open edge making sure to back stitch. {See Below}

Cut the corners on a slant and turn everything right side out.

Fold the open edge in 1/2” and iron flat. Then stuff your pincushion with poly-filling or stuffing of your choice and pin closed. Top stitch all the way around…make sure those straps don’t get in the way.

Put some hook and loop on the ends of the straps in order to secure it to your machine. You have to put the pincushion around your machine to determine where to put the hook and loop.

…and you’re done. ENJOY!

Red Heart Pillow Tutorial by Noodlehead

Hi Ucreate fans! I'm super honored to be here today. Kari always seems to round up the most fun sewing projects from around blogland.

I'm Anna, my blog is noodlehead, I've got two little girls, am a working mama, and am trying to find the balance between my hobby, my job, and my family. I've got lots of tutorials and even a few patterns if you want to stop by and check them out!

Red Heart Pillow Tutorial

Lately I really have been enjoying collecting vintage kitchenware, so this pillow is inspired by a vintage enamel bowl designed by Kaj Franck. Valentine's day is one of my favorites, so here we go!

Materials:

20"x 20" pillow form

2/3 yard white fabric (for background)

20.5" by 20.5" muslin for lining (optional)

20.5" by 20.5" piece for back of pillow

fat quarter (18x22) for heart

18" invisible zipper, I just shortened a 20" zip ** if you don't want to try an invisible zip, you can do a simple envelope closure

templates: white background, red heart

Directions:
Cut out pieces, you'll need two of the half-heart shaped pattern pieces and two of the white background pieces. I would err on leaving plenty of wiggle room on the white pieces, then after completing the heart, just trim down to 20.5" by 20.5". You'll also need to cut two additional pieces 20.5" by 20.5". One is the pillow back the other you can use muslin, it'll line the font of the pillow and hide the heart seams and make it sturdy and durable for washing, etc.

Ready for the curves?
Don't be scared. Watch this video for piecing the heart.

Sorry, both parts I say wrong sides facing, guess I was nervous, it's supposed to be right sides facing! :)

Once you complete both halves of the heart, you'll have to pieces like this (they'll be mirrored though, obviously, to complete the heart shape):

Press all seams towards red part of the heart. I like to use a little spray starch to make things nice and crisp.

Trim heart halves, making sure you have room for the 1/4" seam allowance.

Place RIGHT sides facing and sew together.

Press center seam open.

Serge (or zig zag) pillow top and muslin together, also serge (or zig zag) the edges of the pillow back.

Install the zipper:
(You might also want to check out this invisible zipper tutorial too, it's how I learned to install one.)
I really recommend an invisible zipper foot, they should be relatively inexpensive (between $2-8), but you can also use a regular zipper foot. Press the zipper if you're using a zipper foot, it'll let you get close to the zipper teeth.

Align the edge of the zipper tape with the serged edge of the bottom of the pillow front, zipper open, zipper teeth and zipper pull facing down. Sew close to zipper teeth.

Align remaining zipper tape edge with serged edge of bottom of the pillow back. Sew close to zipper teeth.

Place pillow front and back RIGHT sides facing, pin, being sure to pull out the zipper tape ends (those zig zaggy things) and pin them out of the way. Be sure to open the zipper at least half-way at this point otherwise you won't be able to open it up!

Sew starting at the point where you stopped sewing the zipper using a 1/2" seam allowance all the way around, ending where the other side of the zipper had been sewn.

I like to taper in the corners to more of a 5/8" seam allowance, it gives the pillow and nice shape and the corners look nicer.

Using a pinking shears, clip the corners. Turn right side out, insert pillow form.

I put together these FREE PINTABLES for my readers last week in three different color ways: red, pale pink, and turquoise. I'm using the red option today, but you could make yours in any of the three colors. Click HERE to be taken to the download!

Now the crafting begins! Paint a nice thick coat of the craft paint.

Let the paint dry and paint and apply another thick coat. Allow the second coat to dry. (I painted one coat at the beginning of nap time and the second coat at the end of naptime.)

Let's get to Mod Podging! Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the dried board and carefully place one of the prints on top. Coat the top of the print with a thick layer of Mod Podge and allow to dry. Repeat with the other two boards. The paper will crinkle up a bit, but settles back down during drying time. (Please don't panic like I did.)

By the time your boards are ready for display, you'll have two thick coats of Mod Podge and two thick coats of the Glitter Finish. I know I've said it before, but it really is important: let your boards dry completely in between each coating!

With the ribbon, tie a nice pretty bow and leave the tails of the ribbon about six inches long on each side. Use the glue gun to inject hot glue into the bow's center to keep it from unraveling. I have glue in the front, the back, the sides; that center part of that bow is loaded!

Although you could easily use the glue gun for this step as well, I wanted to make sure that this part was sturdy and would last for years to come. Staple the ends of the ribbon to the "Love Me Tender" board.

Line up the connector ribbon pieces directly below the bow ends and staple into place. Repeat this process for the last two boards.

And you're finished!

I’m a stay-at-home mom and spend a good amount of my time each day crocheting projects that are bright, modern, and trendy. Some of those projects include blankets, beanies, and toys. I really want to share my love for crochet with you and get you excited about how fun and easy it is.

So here is a tutorial of a cupcake beanie I made my little girl for her cupcake-themed 1st birthday party.

Cupcake Beanie Tutorial

Size: 12 months

Skill Level: Easy

Materials Needed:

H hook (5.00 mm)

one skein of medium worsted yarn in brown (I used Lion Brand Yarn)

one skein of medium worsted yarn in pink (I used Lion Brand Yarn)

scissors

yarn needle

Abbreviations:

ch: chain

sc: single crochet

dc: double crochet

st: stitch

sc2tog: single crochet 2 together

Frosting

Note: You will be working in a round on the beanie, so do not turn your work or join rounds.

Row 2: sc 2 st in each sc around. (8)

Row 3: 2 sc in first st, sc in next st repeat around. (12)

Row 4: 2 sc in first st, sc in next 2 sts repeat around. (16)

Note: You will be turning your work and then sewing together at the end.

Bottom of Cupcake Hat

Row 1: Ch. 60.

Row 2: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each st across.

Row 3: ch 3, dc in front post, dc in back post repeat until end of row. Ch 3, turn work. (This explains how to crochet front and back posts.)

Rows 4-6: repeat row 3. Fasten off and leave long tail for sewing sides together.

Note: To make this hat smaller or bigger, simply chain less or more at the beginning and follow the rest of the pattern.

Once you have both top and bottom finished sew the bottom piece to the frosting top. Sew around evenly through the bottom inside loop of the frosting part to the top of the bottom of the cupcake hat.

I’m a stay-at-home mom and spend a good amount of my time each day crocheting projects that are bright, modern, and trendy. Some of those projects include blankets, beanies, and toys. I really want to share my love for crochet with you and get you excited about how fun and easy it is.

So here is a tutorial of a cupcake beanie I made my little girl for her cupcake-themed 1st birthday party.

Size: 12 months

Skill Level: Easy

Materials Needed:

H hook (5.00 mm)

one skein of medium worsted yarn in brown (I used Lion Brand Yarn)

one skein of medium worsted yarn in pink (I used Lion Brand Yarn)

stitch marker

scissors

yarn needle

Abbreviations:

ch: chain

sc: single crochet

dc: double crochet

st: stitch

sc2tog: single crochet 2 together

Note: You will be working in a round on the beanie, so do not turn your work or join rounds.
