Today was Monkey’s day.  Sometimes it’s good to pretend that you aren’t an adult – I mean, you get to see the world through your kid’s eyes, and what’s cooler than that?!

Monkey said that he wanted to go to the mall, so onto the mall we went.  First, we rode the escalator down and then back up again.  It was fun and I noticed how many adults made eye contact with me and smiled.  Who knows, perhaps they wished they could ride the escalator up and down like a child.

After the fun that is the escalator, we went to the play area.  I usually hate the play area and try to bribe Monkey with anything I can so that we don’t have to go in there.  I know he really likes it, but I cannot stand when parents do not watch their kids, so we hardly ever go.  But today was all about Monkey, so we went.  Luckily, for me, there weren’t any unruly kids not being supervised so it was fun.

When Monkey was bored of the play area, he wanted an M&M cookie.  Immediately the mom in me started to say no because it was only 10:30am, but I changed my tune and we bought a cookie.  Once the cookie was gobbled, we went to the pet store.  I’m pretty sure we’ve only been in the pet store one other time and it’s completely my fault.

My kid loves animals, as do I (well, not snakes and mice and other creepy, crawly things).  I just can’t get behind the whole pet store/breeder/puppy mill thing.  Plus, I get really sad thinking about the dogs and cats that live behind glass in a mall… but today we went in and played with two puppies.  Monkey couldn’t stop laughing and we had such a great time there.  I found myself thinking that we should go to the next thing, and I realized that I need to just slow down.  Relax.  Take it easy.

So we stayed and played for quite a while.

When we had had enough of playing with the puppies, it was Chick-Fil-A time.  Monkey loves his Chick-Fil-A like it’s going out of style.  No joke.  He carried his little kid’s meal bag to the biggest table he could find (seated about 6 people) and we sat down.  Usually I would have picked a table for two, but today Monkey picked.  He wanted the big, round table so that’s what we got.

The food court is right by the carousel, so we went there next.  I mean, what’s a day without riding the carousel?!  I think we ride this thing each and every time we go to the mall, so this wasn’t new, but still fun.  Monkey has loved riding the carousel every since I can remember putting him on a horse.  It’s one of those things that I hope he doesn’t outgrow any time soon because he’s loved it for so long.

He was ready to go after riding the bunny rabbit “Hopper” on the carousel (Yep, the elderly woman that runs the carousel has every single animal on that platform named).

In the car, he decided he wanted a cupcake and then to go home for a bike ride to the park, so that’s what we did!  I don’t know about you, but I’ve had one of the best days ever with him and we didn’t even do anything spectacular.  Sometimes it really is the small things in life that put the biggest smile on my face.

“Daddy, come play!”  The three simple words that I hear more times than I can count throughout the day.  And I wouldn’t have it any other way.  Sure, working from home isn’t always easy.  If I step out of my office to grab a bite to eat, get some water, etc. and I’m seen by Monkey, I more often than not have a Monkey hanging from my leg.

Although I believe he understands that “Daddy has to work”, I know he doesn’t like to hear that because that means I can’t play with him at that very moment.  But overall, we have such an incredible son. We’re lucky and fortunate that he’s slept through the night every single night for more than a year or year and 1/2 now.  He only got up 2 or 3 times, which was when he was sick to throw up in the bed.  Yuck.  So when Jane puts him down to sleep around 6:30 or 7:00 PM, he’s out until 6:00 to 7:00 AM.  Believe me, we know that this is not the norm – and we know that we’re very lucky!

More and more I’m seeing Monkey grow up.  I’m trying to soak in each and every moment that I have with him.  He’s such a sweet little boy.  Yesterday while playing trucks with him, he gave me no less than a dozen hugs and kisses randomly while we’re played and he told me a few times, “I love you, Daddy”.  I was also told, “you’re cute”.  lol

I know that this phase will not last forever.  And I do all that I can to ‘slow down time’ and be fully in the moment when we’re playing together everyday.  And frankly, I wouldn’t want this phase to last forever.  Monkey coming home from high school with his friends kissing me and hugging me and telling me he loves me and that I’m cute would beyond cross the line on many levels!

And you know, we’re like every other parent out there.  We think Monkey is the smartest little guy out there.  From being able to count to 14 (sometimes higher, but often 14 is followed by 14… 14…. 14… lol) to doing a great job with his ABC’s, knowing dozens of animals and the sounds they make, remembering the name of dozens of toys (blows my mind), and countless other signs of an incredible memory and intelligence.  We’ve got one smart kid on our hands.  (He must take after Jane.)  lol

But you know, I never want to be ‘that parent’.  Sure, I’ll puff my chest out on our blog here and brag about out little Monkey, just as any mommy/daddy blogger does.  I think it’s a good thing.  It means we’re proud and love our Monkey more than anything in the world.  But what neither Jane nor I do is be one of those parents who always seems to compare their kid with others or whenever you see them you know the dreaded, “You’re not going to believe what so-and-so is already doing”.  We know a few mom’s and dad’s who feel the need to compare their kids with yours, make sure you know exactly where they are at in their development cycle, and really annoy the hell out of you when you see them.

At Monkey’s school, there are several mom’s like that.  Even though our little Monkey was one of two of about 10 or so kids in his class (puffing my chest out) as one who would be able to handle playing sports with kids older than him (I’m talking kick-ball, soccer, and other 2-3 year old sports here), not one other parent knows about that besides us.  We just don’t feel the need to broadcast.  But I know for a 100% fact that if some of the other kids were chosen, we’d see their mom’s show up with banners and who knows what else to make the world known.

His teachers adore him and have told Jane on multiple occasions how great he’s doing.  I’ve gone to pick him up at school a few times and it was hard to actually leave because the teachers kept talking to him, giving him hugs, eating him up – and he loves every minute of it! lol

We don’t believe Monkey is better than anyone else.  Sure, he may be further along some of the developmental stages than others, but all kids develop at their own pace.  There are some further along than him in areas.  It’s just how it is – and I think some parents forget that.  For the last year or so when we’re around other parents, Monkey will do or say something around other Mom’s and they’d look shocked and say, “Wow, he’s already doing XYZ?  That’s amazing” or whatever.  We shrug it off around other people (sure, it makes us feel good!) but of course we praise him and tell him he’s such a good and smart boy 1,000,000 times at home followed by tons of hugs and kisses.

And of course, we’re just like other parents when it comes to seeing other kids do something. We say the same thing, “Wow, so-and-so is doing that already!?” when we see kids around Monkey’s age doing something that he’s not doing yet, like riding a bike.  Monkey isn’t quite there yet and would rather walk his bike than ride it… but he’ll get there.

Now as far as Monkey listening to us – we’re in a good place.  There was awhile back when he went into timeout a few times a day because he wouldn’t listen to us.  But now all we have to do is warn him that he’ll go into timeout if he doesn’t stop doing whatever he’s doing.  But most of the time it doesn’t go that far.  We just tell him to stop and for the most part, he listens.  It’s been a good 3-4 months or longer since I’ve had to pull out the timeout card and it’s probably been that long with Jane, too.  He listens to us well 95% of the time – except when he doesn’t have a nap and he’s tired and cranky around dinner time.  Then all hell breaks loose and Jane and I are running around the house frazzled, stressed-out, and pulling each others hair out!  And I know that’s just a part of growing up – kids won’t always listen and they’ll always test their boundaries.

Anyway, being a dad just keeps getting better and better each and every day.  He loves his time with Daddy and will often tell Mommy to go in the other room if he and I are playing in his toy room and she comes in to tell me something.  lol  And I love my time with him.  It just keeps getting better and better as he is able to talk and express himself more.  It’s also getting more and more fun as we play with more and more toys.  Playing and racing cars all the time is a blast!  I’m just a big kid at heart.

I never thought being a Dad was like ‘this”.  And ‘this” is not something that I can easily put into words.  It just takes over you.  It’s awesome and amazing.

This is just a quick post to say Happy New Year to everyone.  The Holidays got us way off track with family in town, us going out of town, this, that, and everything else.  So sorry we have been a bit quiet lately.

But everything is good.  Jane is good.  Monkey is good.  I’m good.

We hope everything is good for all of you.

So yeah.  Jane and I have totally sucked at writing the frequency of blog posts like we used to.  But for good reason: Time.  It’s AMAZING how much your life changes after your little one is born.  And it’s AMAZING how fast time goes.  A week is nothing.  A month is a speed bump.  And a year?  Was that just 2011 that flew by?  So many things change.  From priorities all the way to drinking habits. (Wine at night makes us feel alright after a tough day with Monkey.)

Anyway, just wanted to say hello to all of you and hope that you and all of your Monkey’s are doing great!

Elf on the Shelf

I got a little emotional today.  Monkey (our son), Jane, and I decided to go ahead and take the jump and put up our Christmas tree today.  Last Christmas, with Monkey being only one and 1/2, he didn’t help us too much… which was expected.  This year, and two and 1/2, he LOVED helping us hang the balls on the tree.  Granted there were a few sections where there were 5-6 balls all hanging from each other, but all in all he did a GREAT job.

Once most of the tree was decorated, I sat on the couch and watched Jane and Monkey finish hanging balls on the tree.   Watching them reminded me back when I was really little helping my mom decorate our Christmas tree.  The Holidays can be really tough for me sometimes; but today I was really happy seeing Monkey and Jane create those memories that he’ll always remember over the years.

Elf on the Shelf Helps Monkey Be A Good Boy!

This Christmas is going to be a GREAT Christmas for Monkey.  We’ve got him some really great presents and now that he understands Santa = presents, he’ll be one excited little guy come Christmas day.  And we’re trying something new to see if we can get him to “be a good boy” between now and Christmas.  Jane told Monkey all about the Elf on the shelf and red him the book today.  The Elf on the Shelf makes sure that he’s a good boy and reports back to Santa every night.  :)

Anyway… I think some of the toughest parts about being a parent of a little one this time of year is…

1. Staying within your Christmas present budget, especially if you finish shopping a month early.  We always see things that he’d love when we’re out and about, but need to stick to our guns.

2. When you have the presents hidden deep inside the closet, not going back there to give your little Monkey one of the presents sometimes is tough… Especially during one of the ‘terrible twos’ tantrums and you know for a fact that one of the new toys you bought would put an end to it!

Such a fun and magical time a year for our little ones, isn’t it?

The development of babies in the mothers’ womb can differ very greatly but there may be one thing in common – all expectant parents find that process quite fascinating. So here, in short are the kinds of changes that a baby typically goes through in the 9 months that it spends in its mother’s womb.

Month 1
The all important process of implantation takes place about a week after conception, when the embryo attaches to the walls of the uterus and then the formation of the placenta (to nourish and sustain the baby) and the umbilical cord (that attaches the baby to the mother) begin to form. The basis of the spine forms and at around 25 days the heart starts to beat.

Month 2
This is a crucial time of development for the baby for all the major organs such as the brain, stomach, lungs liver, the rudiments of the bone structure etc begin to develop. At this critical time of development the baby is most vulnerable to factors that could result in miscarriage or birth defects. At the end of the second month the baby is called a fetus and the first indications of what sex the baby will be start to emerge.

Month 3
The bones start to develop now and there is some movement from the fetus which mother will not be able to feel yet. The head is about 50% of the baby’s body at this time.

Month 4
The baby now starts to do a lot of what a new born will do – sleeping, waking, moving, kicking, swallowing, and passing urine. Fingernails appear now, the teeth buds are formed, the body is covered by the fine pelt of hair called lanugo and baby is about half a foot in length. Baby can probably hear by now, and this may be the time that the parents start to speak with their baby.

Month 5
As some of the discomforts of early pregnancy fade about now, mother may feel more energetic and upbeat and for the baby it is a time of rapid growth as the baby develops bones, muscles, and starts to acquire some fat stores as well. The baby is nearly 10 inches now and the baby bump is very clear to see.

Month 6
Most excitingly, the expectant mother is now feeling her baby move though some women (particularly second time mothers) may have experienced this earlier on in the pregnancy. At this stage the baby looks much like a human being and may be 11 to 14 inches long.

Month 7
The baby is bigger now, and it’s getting cramped in there, so that there may be less room for baby to move and kick around in. The expectant mother may find that baby startles at sudden noises and may feel this very clearly.

Month 8
Baby puts on a lot of weight in these last couple of months and each day is becoming stronger and more likely to survive if he or she were born early. Baby is now nearly 4 pounds and measures about 16 inches. The mother can probably see quite easily now, the head sticking out here or heel pressing there through the stomach wall.

Month 9
The baby is just about ready to enter the world now, and is big and strong enough to survive as an individual. These 9 months were probably the easy part; the real work begins now, so Good Luck.

Before I dive into who the 3 winners of our ebook, Nap Time Cash are, I just thought that I’d share something that has been on my mind: The Holidays.  It’s getting close to Christmas and our little Monkey is more excited than ever.  Every day he asks us about presents – and we let him know that Santa brings presents to good little boys, and that seems to work… some of the time when he’s in one of his terrible 2 kicks.

Having a little child around the house certainly changes the feel of Christmas.  Jane and I were talking yesterday about how it makes us feel like a kid again.  Seeing Monkey’s excitement when we see Christmas lights or even Santa, which we did a few days ago, it worth it’s weight in gold.  Seeing him smile ear to ear the other day when he saw Santa was so cool and I’ll admit that it nearly brought tears to my eyes.  It was either seeing him brought me back to my childhood and all of the wonderful memories, or it was the bug that flew in my eye.  Either way, I’m really excited about this time of year for Monkey!

We’ve picked up several presents already and I KNOW that he’ll be super excited.  And speaking of being super excited, I used Random.org to choose 3 winning comment entry numbers at random.

From time to time I may provide updates on Jane and my writing business.  Don’t worry, it will not be a ton of updates, just things here and there every once in awhile.

As far as new updates on our side writing business, right now I’m spending some time looking for a few new clients.  There is a potential for a VERY niche client that I hope to hear back from and/or talk to this week regarding the proposal I sent last week.  This person is a referral of a referral, so we would have never ever found him out there otherwise.  (I talk a little about asking for referrals and what we say in the Nap Time Cash ebook.)

Anyway, I sent two proposals providing him with two options.  This is not a small project and both proposals are in the five-figures PLUS a percentage of revenue that his website earns for the next 12 months.  Would it be a lot of work if we get this client?  Yup. But the upside potential over the next 12 months plus the initial payment is so worth it.

I know some of you are wondering, how could I bid so high on a writing project?  As I talk a little about in Nap Time Cash, once you get a bunch of clients and start to find the areas you love to write about, work on becoming GOOD at writing content for those areas.  Look for ways you can become somewhat of an expert in an area.  You may already have some expertise in an area, or something that you’re already passionate about.  Or, if you are like me, it may take some time to find those little sweet spots where writing and researching is a breeze and you become fairly good at it.

I’ve been fortunate enough to tap into an industry where people pay very good money for content and expertise that just so happens to be in an area that I’ve been learning about, studying, and have experience with.  But like so many of you, I started with zero knowledge.  I started writing articles, content, blog posts, etc. for low amounts which allowed me to get/win clients, gain experience, and figure out the areas I love writing about and feel I’m good at.

Now over the years I’ve learned some tough lessons.  One of which is never counting your chickens before they hatch.  So we’ll see what happens with this client.  I expect that it will take a good couple of weeks to close this deal if we can win his business.  And I’m going to try to do anything and everything to win it.  If we do win his business, this does change a lot of things.  A lot.  But I’ll wait to talk about those chickens if they hatch.

Anyway, I truly hope that all the moms/dads out there who have a bit of time and an interest in making some money on the side check out our little ebook. Our little side business has saved us so many times and is on the track to becoming a much larger income source than we ever imagined.  We don’t make any promises – and we let you know upfront that it takes some work finding/securing clients, and then actually doing the writing.  It’s not some over night money making scheme.  And I know many of you could benefit from some extra cash – especially around the holidays.

One final side note that I will make… We have another potential client that could turn VERY interesting in a few months.  If we get this client, Jane and I will need to bring on a lot of help because the project is quite large.  So that means we’d be working the other side of the coin, which is hiring writers for short-term and long-term projects.  It’s a few months away, so stay tuned.  It would be very cool if we could hire some of you.  :)  We shall see.  Fingers crossed.

Learn How We (Stay-At-Home Mom Jane and Worker Bee Tarzan) Make An Extra $200 To $4,000 Per Month Writing Articles, Blog Posts, And Content For Others – And How You Can Too!

Dear Readers,

They say in tough times that sometimes you need to get creative to make some extra money.  You name it, we’ve done it.  Over time, we’ve tried just about every “business opportunity” out there, only to end up losing more money than we spent.  We’ve sold items that we don’t use any longer on Craigslist and eBay, but soon ran out of items we could (or would want to) sell.

We’ve searched through and tried just about every “work from home” offer you can find out there.  But at the end of the day, we were not making enough money to make it worthwhile.

So a little while ago, my wife Jane and I (the creators of this blog) decided to do something that has been staring us in the face the whole time.  We decided to look around for ways that we can make money doing something we both like to do, which is writing.  After some research, we found that there are a lot of people and BIG corporations out there who pay people to write articles, blog posts, content for websites, magazine articles, content for brochures, and on and on.

We figured that since we both love to write (as you can tell by the HUNDREDS of blog posts on HisBoysCanSwim), this would be an easy little side business that we could both do together.  And because you can write during the day, during nap time, night time, or any time, this would be a great way for Jane to make some extra money as a stay-at-home mom.

We spent a few hours here and there researching everywhere online for the first couple of months.  We sent tons of emails and even made some phone calls to to everyone we could find.  Jane got the first “gig” and was paid $50 to write three articles for a website that took her under an hour to do.  We were excited and knew that we were onto something.

Over the course of the last year or so, we’ve made anywhere from $200 to $4,000.00 in a single month working VERY part-time writing for others.  Some projects paid us $7.  Some $10.  Some $50.  Some $200.  Some $750.  Some $2,000.  And the highest so far has been $4,000.00 which came in September, 2011 from a client who will pay us $4,000.00 every 3 months to write content for two of their websites on an ongoing basis.  (This doesn’t include the sale of an ebook that Jane wrote that we discuss in our ebook.)

The way that this project works out is that they hired us to write an article (blog post) for their website every single day.  So that’s 30 articles per month.  After 3 months, that’s 90 articles written and $4,000.00 sent to us.  Each article takes us about an hour to write, which is a total of 30 hours of work each month. Times that by three months = 90 hours of work, which makes us $44.44 an hour writing simple blog posts.  Not bad!

That’s an extra $16,000.00 per year we make from just one client!

Our goal is to find a handful of clients who are paying us monthly to write content for them.  That way we wouldn’t have to spend any time searching for potential jobs anymore.  Now for us, we’re doing this to make extra money.  We have other projects that we’re working on and (at least for now) we do not have plans to make this our full-time focus.  However, there are months that bring in a full-time income working very part-time.

$300 Per Hour

Another recent client contacted me (Tarzan) because they saw some work that I did on another website and loved the style of writing that I used.  They contacted me and offered me $750 to write several short articles for them.  I looked at the scope of worked involved and jumped on it.  It took me 2 and 1/2 hours to do, which meant that I made $300.00 per hour while working on that project.

Now I’m VERY excited where the relationship with that company may lead because they are a multi-billion dollar corporation (and one that you and your kids know very, very well!)  One the articles are published on their website, if they receive great feedback, they’ll be coming back to me for more.  I’m going to try and see if I can work a monthly or quarterly deal out with them so I can take them on as a long-term client.

$100 Per Hour

Jane found a project that was still writing, but it was a different form of writing.  A business owner needed someone to transcribe a couple of conference calls they had recorded and then take the information discussed on the call and turn it into a 2-3 page information sheet.  The topic was on weight loss and weight loss products, so it was already a topic Jane knew a lot about and bid on the project.  She got it.

The project took Jane a total of 6 hours to complete (which was spread out over 30 days) and was paid $600 for her work, which equals out to $100 per hour.  In addition, we get side jobs here and there where we charge people anywhere from $7 to $50 to write articles, blog posts, and/or website content.  Depending on the site we use and/or the client, many of the payments come in via PayPal.

The two recurring payments that you see below was for a writing project for a client who was going to pay us $242.91 per month to write some articles, post them on her website, and then get some backlinks to the articles by doing what is called blog commenting.  The project was going great, but she ended up selling her website and the new owner already had people to do the work we were doing.

45 Ways To Make Money With Your Writing

After about a year of some researching, getting clients, trying new things, we ended up with what we call our “money list”.  This is a list of 45 websites that we both have shared in our favorites on our computers.  Whenever we want to pick up a new client and some work, we go to any of these sites to see what we can find.  We ALWAYS find something because there are so many people and companies who need articles, blog posts, website content, written content, etc.

This list has become our “money list” because any time we want to make some extra money, this is where we go.  It’s such a great feeling not having to scramble around searching for ways to bring extra money in.  It’s also a great feeling to know that whatever we want, we can use our “money list” to fund it.

For example, the other day we needed to get our car serviced, which included needing 4 new tires, and a few odds and ends.  The cost?  A little over $700 after everything was all said and done.  That would have REALLY HURT awhile ago.  Now even though the last thing I wanted to spend $700 on was our car, it didn’t ‘hurt’ that bad because we had the money readily available.  I paid it with our PayPal debit card, which had more than enough to cover the $700.  And even better, 100% of that money was made simply by writing content for people and companies.  How cool is that?

And because of our “money list” of 45 websites to use to make money with our writing, we went on a nice long vacation recently (which was long, long overdue!).  The airfare, rental car, gas, food, entertainment, hotel, etc. was 100% covered by the money we’ve made writing articles, blogs, and content for others.

Do you have any idea how good that feels?  Now keep in mind, Jane and I do not work on our side business every day. Some days we spend a little more time on a project to get ahead so we can take weekends off.  Some days we spend 30 minutes writing.  And some days none.  We choose when we want to work.

No Overnight Riches Or Big Promises Here

Now we don’t want other moms and dads to think that this is something you do once and you never have to work again.  We have fallen for many of those “get rich overnight” deals over the years.  The only people who get rich are those who make the empty promises.  What we are doing is a REAL business.  It’s simply called “Freelancing” and it’s a HUGE industry – and getting bigger and bigger by the second.

As more and more companies downsize and lay people off, they look to outsource work to freelancers to save money.  There is more work to go around than ever before and the opportunity will only get bigger and bigger.  So at the end of the day, you are starting a side freelance business where YOU choose the clients you work with, the hours you work, and the money you make.  You can work the business by yourself or with your spouse.  It’s 100% up to you.

It will take a little time to get going – but it is possible to make some money very quickly on many of the 45 places that we’re going to share with you.  Will you get $497, $750, $1500, or $4,000 clients right away?  Most likely not.  Those types of clients will come, but only after you have some clients under your belt and you have proven yourself.

You Do Not Need A Degree For This Business

We do not have college degrees.  In fact, unlike Jane (who does have some college under her belt) the only two times I’ve ever stepped on a college campus was about 12 years ago to go to a party.  If you have a high school education (or you are self-taught), you can type on a keyboard to make words come together in sentences, you have a fairly good grasp on the English language, then you’ve got the skills that people and companies will pay for.

We stay away from subjects that are over our heads.  For example, there are scientific companies that will pay people many thousands of dollars to write articles and papers, but you need to have specialized knowledge and understanding of what in the heck they do.  There are companies that will pay tens of thousands of dollars to write 3-4 sentence product descriptions for their catalogue, but you need to have the skills to write for catalogues.

But what is really cool about this business is that the more you get out there, the more opportunities will come your way.  The way that we got the $4,000.00 quarterly client is we became a little specialized in one area.  Meaning, we learned a lot by writing content in an industry and developed some skills that happen to be worth at least $4,000.00 a quarter to this client.

You just never know where things will lead.  One client could turn into a full-time income, or you may need several clients.  Maybe you want to make an extra $500 per month.  Maybe you want to make a few thousand dollars a month.  It’s entirely up to you.  Just know that none of this will happen over night.  You’ll most likely start off small like we did.  We made $5.00 here, $20.00 there, sometimes a $50.00 over here, and eventually found our groove.

This is what Monkey said to me while sitting in his car seat.  I started cracking up at his choice of wording.  His butt is anything but too big – I mean, the kid only weighs 29 pounds on a good day.  I don’t have a clue where he got that sentence from because I’m pretty sure I’ve never said that out loud for him to hear.  He said it after I picked him up from school, so maybe he got it from there…

Having a toddler is a lot of fun!  Monkey says the most random things and I can’t help but laugh.

We were watching Yo Gabba Gabba one day (it’s his favorite show still) and I stopped looking at the television and turned my head to look at Monkey and just watch him.  He looked at me like, “WTF are you staring at?”, put his hand on the side of my face and pushed it so that I was looking at the tv instead of him.  Then he said, “Momma, watch Yo Gabba Gabba”.
